World Cup Fantasy managers rewarded with goals in exciting final

A host of French attacking players rounded off a successful World Cup final performance by rewarding their Fantasy managers one last time.

Owners of Antoine Griezmann, Kylian Mbappe and Paul Pogba were particularly grateful as the summer Fantasy game came to a close.

We’ve got all the goals, assists and talking points from the 2018 World Cup final.

FRANCE 4-2 CROATIA

TOP-SCORING PLAYERS:

  • Paul Pogba (£8.8m) – 7 points
  • Antoine Griezmann (£10.1m) – 6 points
  • Kylian Mbappe (£9.2m) – 6 points
  • Ivan Perisic (£8.5m) – 6 points
  • Mario Mandzukic (£8.9m) – 4 points
  • Domagoj Vida (£5.5m) – 3 points
  • Lucas Hernandez (£5.0m) – 3 points

Paul Pogba (£8.8m) got his first Fantasy returns of the World Cup in the most important match of all, and finished the final as the match’s top-scoring player, with seven points.

His goal was the third for France as they were crowned champions by blowing Croatia in a 4-2 win.

The first goal of the match was for the French, but it was Croatian striker Mario Mandzukic (£8.9m) who put it into the net. Antoine Griezmann’s (£10.1m) free-kick from deep got the final touch from the Juventus forward, taking away any possibility of attacking returns.

Ivan Perisic (£8.5m) popped up with his second goal in as many World Cup matches a few minutes later to level the tie. Domagoj Vida (£5.5m) flicked the ball onto him from inside the box, he took a touch away from the defender and then struck it back across goal into the far corner.

France were in front again in 38th minute, though. A lengthy VAR review saw Perisic punished for a handball in the penalty area, allowing Griezmann to get his goal from the spot and make it 2-1 at half-time.

Pogba’s goal came just shy of the hour-mark after a period of Croatian pressure. Griezmann teed him up on the edge of the box, his initial shot blocked before his secondary effort flew into the far corner of Danijel Subasic’s (£5.5m) net.

Just six minutes later Kylian Mbappe (£9.2m) became the first teenager to score in a World Cup final since Pele in 1958. The ball came into him from Lucas Hernandez (£5.0m) and his fancy footwork on the edge of the penalty area wrong-footed both Vida and Subasic, allowing him to blast home from distance.

Just as it looked as if the match was over as a contest, France goalkeeper Hugo Lloris (£5.9m) gifted a goal to Croatia, his attempts to dribble round Mandzukic foiled by a successful tackle from the striker. His touch was enough to send the ball into the net.

France held out for the result in the end to become the sixth team in history to win the World Cup twice.

Elsewhere, England striker Harry Kane (£11.2m) finished the tournament as the overall top-scoring player on World Cup Fantasy with 40 points. Griezmann was just behind him on 38, with Raphael Varane (£6.1m) registering 34.

Andreas Granqvist (£5.2m) proved the most valuable player coming in at 5.9 points per million, Benjamin Pavard (£4.6m) recording 5.8 and Varane 5.5.

FRANCE XI (4-2-3-1): Lloris; Hernandez, Umtiti, Varane, Pavard; Kante (N’Zonzi 55’), Pogba; Matuidi (Tolisso 73’), Griezmann, Mbappe; Giroud (Fekir 81’).

CROATIA XI (4-1-4-1): Subasic; Strinic (Pjaca 81’), Vida, Lovren, Vrsaljko; Brozovic; Perisic, Rakitic, Modric, Rebic (Kramaric 71’); Mandzukic.

I think it is because Kamara is Fulhams only striker on the game at the moment and Aguero is always subject to rotation which will be built into the algorithm.

Aguero plays Arsenal, and he's not 100% to start. Besides their scores are 0.26 apart, which is close but Aguero is still the clear favourite.

Kamara's projection will go down if Mitrovic is signed, but I could understand expecting Mitro at home to Palace to average similar to Aguero away to Arsenal. Especially when factoring in Arsenal's well rested first players compared to City's and the new manager effect.

He's definitely not even close to nailed. Jorginho and Kante are nailed, which leaves Barkley, Fabregas, Bakayoko, Loftus-Cheek, Drinkwater, possibly Golovin fighting for one spot. Can see him go out on loan again.

Nice team structure... I think that forward line will prove useful, as long as Auba doesn’t punish non owners too badly in GW1 & GW2.

Mendy or VVD/Robertson seem better picks than Alonso atm though with uncertainty over how Alonso will fit in plus this Emerson character they have bought.

Three 7.0-6.5 mids May ultimately be the best way to go, but currently I prefer a city big hitter in midfield alongside Salah at the expense of Kun up front. Could well change.

Thanks, I have 0.5M ITB, was toying with the idea of Alonso > 6 and TAA > Daniels then Firm> Auba

I may keep how it is for first few weeks until Arsenal fixtures get better and then do the above with transfers would give me:

        Fab / Beg
Trippier / Cedric / Tomkins (Lejeune, Daniels)
Salah / Mkhitaryan / Jota / Walcott (Kennedy)
        Arnie / Aguero / Auba

However... I quite like this now with a different 6 in place of Trippier (Maybe B Davies or Smalling). Hmmmm. I kinda wish I hadn't written that down actually as not sure if I like this more!

Looks great. Maybe Theo & Sanè for Dilva & Siggy, but could be considered a bit sideways. Another advocate of the Kun-Firmino-7.0 forward line, it is definitely becoming popular.like the Coleman pick also, I’m currently starting GW1 without him but every time I don’t own him he scores big so that bodes well

Does Douglas have any competition for set pieces, and does he take pens, DFKs, IFKs, and corners?

How good is Jota really? On a scale of 0 to Adel Taarabt where would you rate his ability to step up to the premiership?

Taarabt came up from the champs one year having scored 19 goals from midfield and setup nearly as many. On FKs, pens, the whole works, and absolutely dive bombed in the premiership... could Jota be similar?

        Trying to spread the risk.

With Sanchez its all about Lukaku not being there and an easy conversion to KDB in a couple of gameweeks if required.

Lowton might become Douglas/ TAA - same theory as above!

It’s a good point about Sanchez, but as a KDB placeholder does Sané +0.5 not make more sense?

Seeing a good few folks banking on Sanchez, they could be well rewarded is he gets a haul v Leicester, he’ll probably have pens for that game also.

I’m currently planning a punt on martial for that game though 🙂

Both arguments fail at the "cover" level imo. Points are independent of the teams the players belong to. See this thread for my arguments if you wish, and feel free to argue otherwise 🙂

              Salah it shall be.

Do you put just one good player in your team worthy to be captain and select mediocrity all around it?

No but there's a strong argument for that this season.

I assume you mean: Finally got a team which will get 0 clean sheets every week?

      1. DARK SIDE OF THE LOON

Suggest 4 defenders at 4.5 or 5.0 with guaranteed clean sheets every week? Need to take that gamble to get the attack going.

        Palace and Bourn rotate well
        Burnley has history
And might reconsider Leicester and change it to Southampton.
Plus all those apart from Morgan can contribute in the final third.
Not considering anyone from the newly promoted teams (Douglas being thrown around a lot)

Defence offers the best value in the game. I think your tactic is feasible but a bit foolhardy

You don't need to take that gambel to get the attack going. There are plenty of attacking options cheaper than Sanchez, and they are defenders who can make up for any perceieved loss of attacking verve if you sold him. But it's not just attack that gets you points. 11 men in your team each week, and some of them could be high scoring defenders 😉

That said, I don't want to discourage you from doing something different (although somewhat traditional, just not fashionable this year). It's a valid tactic, but I'm not convinced due to how easy it is to build a good team without skimping in defence )

    @Wolves Ay We

Neves or Costa? Costa seems to play in a more advanced role.

Also how do you see Rui Patricio as a FPL asset? Decent set and forget 4.5? How many cleanies do you envisage Wolves getting over 38 games? Thanks bruv.

Costa out of Neves and Costa, but I prefer Jota in midfield. Patricio should do well but I'm having Douglas instead in defence, he's a free-kick specialist. Cleanies could be anything, really can't say.

Sanchez personally. Needs to step up with Utd missing a lot of WC players + decent fixtures + guaranteed start over Mahrez

Mahrez - cheaper, ManC much more attacking.

Sanchez's plus is that he has no risk of rotation but Jose is destroying ManU attackers.

      Has to be Mahrez.

Out of the two, Cairney as central to everything Fulham do.

Defined as: 3 at the back as opposed to free-raiding full backs.

      6.5.

    Thoughts would be appreciated.

    Fabianski, Ryan
    Coleman, Bailly, Cedric, Tomkins, Peltier
    Salan, Mahrez, Jota, Cairney, 4.5
    Aube, Kun, Tosun

If Mitro comes in under 7 will get him in for Tosun and upgrade Cairney or defence.

Obviously waiting on pre season for some of the puntier choices.

Tosun personally, based on not much other than Everton will presumably be more attaching and has managed a good goals to starts ration even under Alladyce. Zaha finished strongly but a lot to keep asking of him.

    Any suggestions?

    Pickford (speroni)

    Bailly, TAA, Tomkins, Cedric, Daniels

    Mahrez, KDB, Mane, Deulofeu, Cairney

    Aubameyang, Kane, Kamara

Thinking i will rotate a bit with my midfielders and defenders due to fixture, any ideas of improvements?

Kamara won't get much of a look in will he? Assume he's your bench fodder. TAA expected to miss week 1. Otherwise as good as we can do without having seen anything much from pre-season.
