Pre-Season

Atsu on penalties, Richarlison impresses and Heaton gets minutes

Fantasy Premier League managers got their first indication of the penalty-taking pecking order at Newcastle in the latest round of pre-season friendlies.

Meanwhile, Tom Heaton got some more minutes under his belt in Nick Pope’s absence, and Richarlison impressed for Watford.

We’ve got all the latest goals, assists and Fantasy talking points from pre-season.

Burnley 0-1 Shrewsbury Town / Burnley 0-2 Blackpool

  • Goals: None
  • Assists: None

Tom Heaton (£5.0m) registered another hour of football for Burnley with Nick Pope (£5.0m) still yet to return following the World Cup. The former Manchester United man was involved in one of two concurrent friendly matches played behind closed doors at the Clarets’ training ground on Tuesday.

First team players were split evenly across the two pitches but neither XI could find a breakthrough against League One opposition.

Daniel Agyei was the most dangerous for Burnley against Shrewsbury but in the end a Charlie Taylor (£4.5m) own-goal was the difference.

On the other pitch, Sam Vokes (£5.5m) and Nakhi Wells (£4.5m) went closest but Joseph Dodoo and Harry Pritchard got the goals for Blackpool.

The only players other than Pope not to be involved in either match were Robbie Brady (£5.5m), Steven Defour (£5.5m), Ashley Barnes (£6.0m) and Johann Berg Gudmundsson (£6.0m), although the latter is now back in training after returning from World Cup duty with Iceland.

BURNLEY XI v SHREWSBURY: Heaton (Legzdins 60’); Taylor, Long, Tarkowski, Lowton; Koiki (Chakwana 60’), Westwood, O’Neill, Lennon; Agyei, Wood.

BURNLEY XI v BLACKPOOL: Legzdins (Lindegaard 45’); Ward, Mee, Dunne, Bardsley; Walters, Cork, Hendrick, McNeil; Wells (Massanka 45’), Vokes.

ST. PATRICK’S ATHLETIC 0-2 NEWCASTLE UNITED

  • Goals: Sean Longstaff, Christian Atsu (£5.5m)
  • Assists: Matt Ritchie (£6.0m), Dwight Gayle (£6.0m)

Christian Atsu (£5.5m) appears to have the advantage in the Newcastle United penalty-taking pecking order after the club’s first pre-season match.

The Magpies were 2-0 winners over St. Patrick’s Athletic, with Atsu scoring the second from the spot after Dwight Gayle (£6.0m) was fouled.

As a precautionary measure, Jamaal Lascelles (£5.0m) did not take part in the match due to muscle tightness. Jacob Murphy (£5.0m), Paul Dummett (£4.5m) and Martin Dubravka (£5.0m) were all absent too.

For the first goal, Ayoze Perez (£6.5m) pounced on a loose ball, drove forward and played in Joselu (£5.0m), whose shot was saved. Matt Ritchie (£6.0m) gathered the rebound and his deflected cross fell to central midfielder Sean Longstaff, who struck the back of the net.

Exciting attacking midfielder Kenedy (£5.0m) had two chances in the second-half, hitting the post and forcing a good save out of Saints goalkeeper Barry Murphy, furthering his appeal for the new FPL season.

The result was settled late on when Gayle was fouled in the penalty area after being put through by Atsu. The latter took the spot-kick and dispatched it confidently.

NEWCASTLE UNITED XI (4-2-3-1): Darlow (Sels 45’); Manquillo (Clark 45’), Lejeune (Roberts 45’), Yarney, Fernandez (Yedlin 45’); Diame (Shelvey 45’), Longstaff; Aarons (Kenedy 45’), Pérez (Armstrong 45’), Ritchie (Atsu 45’); Joselu (Gayle 45’).

FC KÖLN 1-1 WATFORD

  • Goals: Andre Gray (£6.0m)
  • Assists: Richarlison (£6.5m)

Andre Gray (£6.0m) and Richarlison (£6.5m) were the brightest players in Watford’s first match of pre-season, which they drew 1-1.

The pair linked up well going forward and both had good chances to score, with the Brazilian stationed on the left-flank but constantly drifting in to support Gray.

It was the two of them who combined for the Hornets’ only goal of the match in the first-half. Will Hughes (£5.0m) won possession and put Richarlison through, who then slid the ball across to Gray to finish at the far post.

Gray had the chance to make it two when, again, Hughes won the ball in midfield and this time released Daryl Janmaat (£5.0m). His cross was close to the former Burnley man, but it was turned behind for a corner.

Heurelho Gomes (£4.5m) came on for Ben Foster (£4.5m) at half-time and could have done better for Köln’s equaliser. Salih Oczan’s low cross from the left was easily turned into the empty Watford net by Jhon Córdoba after a poor decision from the Brazilian.

WATFORD FIRST-HALF XI: (4-1-4-1): Foster; Masina, Kabasele, Cathcart, Janmaat; Capoue; Richarlison, Pereyra, Hughes, Sema; Gray.

WATFORD SECOND-HALF XI (4-2-3-1): Gomes; Holebas, Britos, Mariappa, Femenia; Hoban, Wilmot; Success, Sinclair, Lukebakio; Deeney.

Shoud do in terms of what? You cant have more than 3.
But I think those are good picks. I have Kun and Mendy also.
Will be looking at Mahrez in pre-season games.

Just on Mendy... hes actually gone on the tour with city which I take as evidence that he wants to be back in straight away this season.... Im thinking watching from the sidelines all last year has been very frustrating for him

Big decision here. Got an answer the other day, but maybe need reassurances?

    A)Mkhi+Siggurðsson
    OR
B)Mahrez+a 5.5 mid (ie Gray, Deulofeu, Brady etc)

Just pondering over City assets, thats all. Already have Aguero, though.

    RMT

    Patricio - Hamer
    Robertson - Davies - Mendy - PVA - TAA
    Salah (C) - Mahrez - Ramsey - Lamela - Hughes
    Auba - Austin - Sorloth

In general I have gone for a defense heavy team with a good bench that can handle rotation risks well. Going with Salah captain because I dont see other good options at the start of the season. Might downgrade him and go for Auba (C) from GW3.

GKs: Patricio will be set and forget, Hamer fodder. If Wolves look poor defensively I can change for Fabianski when WHU fixtures clear up.
DEF: Liverpool should be very good defensively now with Allison coming in. Their attacking full backs are good value. I can easily handle TAA rotation with my team. Davies, Mendy and PVA are also great, attacking options. Value is generally in defense so Ive gone heavy here.
MID: Salah perma captain. Mahrez my city mid, like him most out of him, Sane and D.Silva. Ramsey seems very kindly priced, if hes central in Emery's plans he should get a lot more pitch time than last season. Lamela is my punt, hes only 6.5 and should play a lot at the start of the season with Son gone. Hughes very good 5.0 option for the bench.
ATT: Auba a good premium striker. Austin very good value if he plays. Sørloth a bench option that should get minutes fairly often.

    Thoughts and comments appreciated 🙂

Will probably change between 5-4-1 and 4-4-2 most of the time. Depends on fixtures and form. Will generally be between PVA and Austin for the final spot, but because of rotation on TAA, Lamela and sometimes Mahrez I expect both PVA and Austin to play most matches.

      Good team,
Spurs maybe a little underpowered initially till the WC stars return, but you can always bench Davies if need be, The advantage of great defense.
Not so sure about Lamela, been out so long looked real rusty last season. Again the underpowered squad.
Perhaps Arsenal double up too risky for early fixtures? Althoguh both those players are capable

      Best luck, like the team.

I agree completely with the heavy defensive strategy.
Your team is very similar to mine.

      Pickford Bettenelli
Robertson Shaw (until TAA is fit), PVA, Mendy, Douglas
      Salah, Mahrez, Mkhitaryan, Jota, Hughes
Aguero (to Aub after Gw2), Tosun, Kamara

Can’t see a clear staring 11 = wastes £££ on the bench, too much rotation worry, too much of a benching headache. Nice in theory, not so in practice

4/10, bin and start again 😉

It seems that we have very different views on the value of having a good bench. I dont think 1-1.5 extra mill on the bench is wasted if that means I can safely have players like TAA and Mahrez in my team without worrying about rotation. 🙂

No probs with a decent starting nailed bench, but you don’t actually have a clear ‘nailed starting bench’ ?

What is you starting 11 and who will you bench ?

Whom of TAA, Mahrez, Ramsey, Lamela, Hughes, Austin, Sorloth are 100% nailed starters ?

You seem to have built ‘obsolescence’ in to you starting 11 and ‘obsolescence’ in to your bench as well and I think that is very dangerous and may leave you struggling to even get 11 starters on GW1

          1. Brosstan
            • 9 Years
            5 years, 9 months ago

If you add up the chances of each player playing its pretty clear that I have to be extremely unlucky not to have 11 starters. Most of those have at least 75% to play, Ramsey is 100% nailed, Lamela and Mahrez close to it at the start of the season. Austin is Southampton's first choice striker. You are exaggerating the rotation risks of these players. Sørloth is the only one I pretty much expect to only get 20mins off the bench.

I think you are cutting it very fine indeed, and you may be lucky and get 11 starters on GW1 imho

                  Patricio
                  Robertson , Davies, Mendy, PVA
Salah (C) , Mahrez , Ramsey, Lamela, Hughes
                  Auba

                  Hamer, Austin, Sorloth, TAA

                  - You will be hopeful to get one out of your 3 outfield bench starting
                  - one or two of your starting 11 is likely to be benched

Out of interest, I went to look at title odds (I like 25/1 price on Arsenal) and Wolves are 8th lowest.

Given that they are priced as the budget promoted side they are, is this just masses of of overexcited Wolverhampton people smashing cash on, or is there huge value in their assets?

I had been largely ignoring them, but money talks.

Wolves are practically Portugal B, or perhaps Jorge Mendes FC. They've done brilliant business last window, and the players they have are pretty quality as well. Top 10 imo, at least. Need to strengthen a few things, but otherwise its a very good squad.

Yea this, they are just reacting to the fact that loads of casual punters are putting money on the best promoted side for lols just to let it ride and hope. In reality, Id guess Wolves should be around 10-12th favorite.

I think that after the top six it is anyone's game for the 7th spot. So many new managers coming in and transfers going on that midtable teams are a lot more variable year-to-year a lá Burnley & Southampton last year.

Wolves are clearly quality - the bookies underestimated them last year too (I got great odds on a championship win).

They used a few players last year that could have made the starting eleven of the good top half (but non-top 6) sides (Leicester, Everton etc). I think a top 10 finish is a good shout, and their assets are undervalued irrespective.

Are Palace's fixtures that good? Especially from a defensive standpoint:

GW1: Fulham (a) Newly promoted team, they're going to be up for it first game of the season. There seems to always be a strange result involving one of the new boys on the first week. Also a derby.

    GW2: Pool (h) Salah.

GW3: Watford (a) Everyone is bigging up Deulofeu and Hughes on here; surely the hornets are capable of getting a goal.

GW4: Southampton (h) ok I agree on this one, think they'll get a clean sheet here

GW5: Huddersfield (a) Trip to Huddersfield right after the international break. Just what the doctor ordered.

Not saying Tompkins / PVA are bad picks but I think you might need attacking returns from them in order to get some points in the first few weeks.

To start the season 'everyone' is a good option. We have little-to-no idea about team quality below the top six teams besides speculation. Everton could fall apart under Silva or West Ham could struggle under Pellegrini. We've seen Southampton drop to relegation fodder last year and the year before PL champions Leicester were down in the bottom 5.

    Mendy Cedric Wan-Bisakka (Dummett) (Duffy)
    Richarlison Ramsey Sané Mahrez Salah
    Auba King (Kamara)

Think there are better 4.5's than Dummett, possibly even in the Newcastle options if you're that keen on their defence.

Decided to make my team before coming in the scout site this year to try to avoid following everyone. Would however appreciate feedback on anything glaringly obvious I've missed.

The goal was to get sure starters and enough value through the team to be able to react quickly.

    Fabianski - Forster
    Young - lovren - Cederic - Tomkins - Dunk
    Mkhi - Sane - Silva - Mane - Masuaku
    Auba - Firminho - Arny

    Thanks!

The common thinking is that Young / Lovren won't start GW1 apart from that I like it. Feel like those without Salah will be rewarded at some stage of the season.

Early RMT. Just had a sit down and read through the articles and gone wth this team to start. Will change with transfers in etc but intially what do people think?

    Pickford -- Patricio
Otamendi --- Van Dijk --- Lovren --- Shaw --- Coleman
De Bruyne --- Richarlson --- Deli --- Neves --- Puncheon
    Lukaku --- Firmino --- Tosun

Mourinho's already stated he's giving World Cup players a break. Lovren isn't so vital as to be flogged into an instant return. Alli might play because Spurs are totally screwed.

Robertson is better value than VVD for the same price.
      Shaw a risk.
      Lovren probably won’t start season.
      KDB probably won’t start season
Richarlison is one to watch and full of expectations but rightly dropped last season.
Deli - Alli? WC won’t start. Deulofeu? Doubling up with Rich? A weak option either way.
      Neves a DM
      Puncheon lol
      Lukaku misses opener(s).

      Crikey.

    Foster. Fab.

    Kun. Firmino. Tosun.

      8/10.

      Shaw a risk.
      Mkhi has poor fixtures.
I’m not sold on Fab as a rotating keeper for the first 10 weeks.

      1. Roy Rovers
        • 9 Years

Yep will keep an eye on Shaw but apparently going really well pre season.

        Who instead of Mikhi?

        1. Zladan
          • 6 Years
          5 years, 9 months ago

Time will tell if Mkhi is even in the starting XI. But he is a good price.

Not really a direct replacement at 7m and would take some fiddling elsewhere.

Lamela/Moura might offer good opening value at 6.5/7m for a direct replacement.

          1. Jernau M Gurgeh
            • 13 Years

            ownership of Mkhi = 21.7%
            of Lamela = 0.6%
            of Moura = 2.1%

How can so many people be wrong to pick Mkhi. Just saying

            1. Zladan
              • 6 Years
              5 years, 9 months ago

I don’t think people realise Spurs’ missing players and who will fill in.

I also think Mkhi is tempting at 7m. Maybe people are overlooking his fixtures.

Ownership isn’t everything. I had Mahrez Captain first week when they won the league. His ownership was next to none.

his wiki reckons hes an attacking mid:

'Laxalt is left-footed and plays as a trequartista. He is physically strong and very versatile. Laxalt has described himself by saying that: My strengths are speed and endurance. I'm a left footed midfielder who can fit in other positions. He has compared himself to the Inter Milan legend Álvaro Recoba, who is also a Uruguayan midfielder.'

He played left wing back for Uruguay at the World Cup. Howe has been using 3-4-3 quite a bit. Could be direct competition for Daniels.

Direct competition is very kind to Mr Daniels!

It's a very interesting signing. More proof of the power of a league that spreads its TV cash (and also one reason why it MAKES so much TV cash).

Tosun looked like he was taking a while to get used to the Prem but by the end he looked like the CF Everton need. He has the scoring record to back that up. Worth a punt IMHO.

Interested in a RMT for this first draft:

    Otemendi/Coleman/Gomez/Tomkins/Malone

    Auba/Tosun/Zaha

    Ederson Fabianski
    Robertson Alonso Yedlin Bednarek Wan-Bissaka
    Salah Mahrez Sanchez Deulofeu Cairney
    Firmino King Vokes
    0.5 itb

Looking at rotating Palace/Newcastle defenders and if W-B continues to start, could be a nice little way in.
Probably will smack Auba in around GW3 by freeing up some funds in midfield. All depends on how Sanchez starts the season (preseason isn't looking good for him...)

    Hows this strategy...

I dont trust any city midfielders to play regularly apart from KDB. Obviously he will miss first couple of gameweeks. I will start with Alexis and use him as a place holder for KDB. I know its not ideal to plan transfers but id end up doing Dilva -> Kdb regardless at some point.

Kun and Mendy will be my city cover for first few GWs
