Mata and Martial start as Mourinho hints at Gameweek 1 back-four

Manchester United manager Jose Mourinho has already been incredibly helpful for Fantasy Premier League managers after the Red Devils’ first pre-season match.

Following a 1-1 draw with Club America in Phoenix, Arizona he revealed who would be his back-four for Gameweek 1.

Elsewhere there were friendlies for Liverpool and Wolves.

We’ve got all the goals, assists and Fantasy talking points from another round of pre-season matches.

Blackburn Rovers 0-2 Liverpool

  • Goals: Lazar Markovic, Daniel Sturridge
  • Assists: Sturridge, Naby Keita (£7.5m)

Daniel Sturridge and Naby Keita (£7.5m) were the stand-out performers as Liverpool won 2-0 at Blackburn Rovers.

The English striker, not yet priced up by FPL, added his third goal of pre-season while new signing Keita put up his third assist.

It started slowly for the Reds as James Milner (£5.5m) missed a penalty following Dominic Solanke (£5.0m) being fouled in the area.

Adam Lallana (£7.0m) was the most influential player in the first-half, supplying Solanke with great delivery as well as hitting the crossbar and nearly scoring a lob on the goalkeeper himself.

Substitutes Keita and Sturridge combined twice early in the second-half, with a defence-splitting ball from the former putting the Englishman through only to drag wide before another was sent just over the bar.

The deadlock was broken when Sturridge was the provider, his pass lashed home by Lazar Markovic.

Shortly afterwards Sturridge made it 2-0 after yet another insightful pass from Keita.

LIVERPOOL FIRST-HALF XI (4-4-2): Karius; Moreno, Klavan, Matip, Clyne; Ojo, Lallana, Milner, Woodburn; Solanke, Origi.

LIVERPOOL SECOND-HALF XI (4-3-3): Karius; Robertson, Van Dijk, Phillips, Gomez; Jones, Keita, Fabinho; Markovic, Sturridge, Camacho.

Club America 1-1 Manchester United

  • Goals: Juan Mata (£6.5m)
  • Assists: Ander Herrera (£5.0m)

Juan Mata (£6.5m) rescued a draw for Manchester United in their first pre-season match after Jose Mourinho, as expected, named a largely second string side.

Lee Grant (not yet in FPL) began the match in goal while Anthony Martial (£7.5m) lined up as a lone striker in a 4-2-3-1 system.

The Frenchman could have had a penalty in the ninth minute but the referee waved away his appeals. Apart from an effort grazing the crossbar early on, it was a largely disappointing performance for Martial, who was too isolated up front. He was substituted on the hour-mark with a possible knock.

That was when Club America took the lead thanks to a strong Henry Martin header.

Having hit the post in the first-half, Mata scored the equaliser. Substitute Tahith Chong whipped in a lovely ball for Ander Herrera (£5.0m), whose header cannoned back off the woodwork for Mata slamming home the rebound on the volley.

After the match, Jose Mourinho said that the back-four who started it, Antonio Valencia (£6.5m), Chris Smalling (£6.0m), Eric Bailly (£5.5m) and Luke Shaw (£5.0m), would all likely line-up against Leicester City in Gameweek 1.

MANCHESTER UNITED XI (4-2-3-1): Grant (J Pereira 45’); Shaw (Greenwood 76’), Smalling, Bailly, Valencia (Fosu-Mensah 45’); Herrera, McTominay (Tuanzebe 87’); Mitchell (Darmian 60’), Mata (Gomes 87’), A Pereira; Martial (Chong 60’).

Wolves 1-1 Ajax

  • Goals: Ruben Neves (£5.0m)
  • Assists: Helder Costa (£5.0m)

Ruben Neves (£5.0m) got his first goal of pre-season in a 1-1 draw with Ajax at Walsall’s Bescot Stadium on Thursday.

He found the net from the penalty spot after Helder Costa (£5.0m) was fouled in the area.

FPL midfielder Diogo Jota (£6.5m) lined up as a centre-forward for the first time this summer, having spent one match on the flank and missing another so far.

The former Atletico Madrid man started 10 matches in the Championship as the striker in Nuno’s 3-4-3 system, furthering his appeal in FPL for 2018/19.

He was the focal point for Wolves’ attacking play in the match and had several chances to score in the first-half, although he could not find a breakthrough.

It was Ajax who went into the interval 1-0 up after Donny van de Peek cut inside and found the net from 15 yards.

Wolves levelled from the penalty spot in the 73rd minute when Costa was brought down in the area. Neves stepped up to smash in the equaliser from 12 yards.

WOLVES XI (3-4-3): Norris (Ruddy 45’); Boly, Coady, Bennett (Saiss 71’); Giles, Gibbs-White (Goncalves 71’), Neves, Doherty; Cavaleiro (Ashley-Seal 71’), Jota, Costa.

Arsenal 1-2 Brentford

  • Goals: Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang (£11.0m)
  • Assists: None

Arsenal played another secret friendly on Thursday with little information available on it.

The Gunners lost 2-1 to Championship side Brentford after Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang (£11.0m) made it five goals in three pre-season matches with his equaliser.

The Bees winner came from a Bernd Leno (£5.0m) error in which he failed to deal with a ball into the box.

Arsenal will now head to Singapore for more high-profile friendly matches against Paris Saint Germain and Atletico Madrid.

I still lean towards Cairney based on the Reddit FPL writeup of Neves (that he is an unbelievably good footballing prospect, but a IB is FPL prospect)

In saying that he did get a lot of goals last year and is only 5.0 after all so not much to lose.

No clarity on who the penalty taker is at Wolves. They had 6 penalties last season with 6 different takers. Neves seems like a very good 5.0 option though. Between him and Hughes for me right now.

I dont think it will be Neves, for the 6 takes Neves was the furthest back (Sept 17) and out of the 6, he is the only one that missed

I have had both since first draft.

Can play 433 or 343 depending on fixtures.

Sometimes none will be in my XI, sometimes one. Both if injuries and Im even fine with it.

Repost for those with Fabianski/Foster rotating keepers.

I am looking to rotate out Fabianski in GWs 1, 3, 6, 7, 9 and 13 (liv, ars, CHE, MNU, TOT, mci). My current second 4.5 keeper is Foster but is Bettinelli of Fulham a better option for these GWs?

Foster (BHA, CPA, ful, ars, wol, LIV)
Bettinelli (CPA, BUR, WAT, eve, car, SOT)

Fulham may be in the market for a new keeper but should come in at 4.5

Why not? Ryan and Lossl outscored half the league last year. You have a worldclass goalie in Rui this year and Cardiff that will mainly play negative football similar to Burnley trying to limit the shots to distance (the reason why Burnley keepers always get saves). Promoted keepers are more likely than not providing a very decent value that sometimes borderlines on exceptional.

    2. ScratchingTheMud
      • 13 Years

I think Fulham's fixtures are probably more appealing. I find that the problem with rotating 'keepers is that they can unexpectedly haul in difficult games, through an accumulation of saves and the odd random penalty save and bonus

    3. Skalla
      • 7 Years
      5 years, 8 months ago

I would pick one of them and just play them every game, yes you should get more cleansheets by rotating but you miss their big scores in tough games with bonus pts and that extra save pts.

Hi long time lurker, first-time poster:

Is a line-up without Kane and Salah workable?
Trying to see if I can break from the mini-league pack early or am I trying to be too clever?

Not having those two expensive players allows for 3 premium strikers.

Here are my current thoughts, RMT please:

    GW1 proposed lineup:

    Mcarthy
    Robertson - Bailli - Shaw - Otamendi
    Deulofeu - Lamela - Sane
    Auba - Firmino - Aguero
Subs: Kenedy - Cedric - Redmond

Aim to WC around GW 4/5 once WC players return unless team looks healthy at that point.

Teams without Salah tend to 'look better' or are more balanced. However that will all be disregarded when Salah starts well once again and over 50% of the game have him and most captain him. I entertained the idea early on in my head of not having him but you're in massive trouble trying to scramble him back in when you admit defeat after his big scores! You can easily get rid of him not easily get him in.

Not without a few transfers you can't. Then it means upsetting you originally team. Imo salah is a most because he can total big scores early on. If that happens the teams without him are behind the eight ball. Probably for the rest of the season too.

Chelsea academy graduate, and perennial loanee Jeremie Boga is undergoing a medical ahead of his reported 4m move to Sassuolo. A buyback clause is there.

Not FPL, just still annoyed by Chelsea's loan system. Not sure how any kid would want to go to a Chelsea academy. The last academy graduate who broke into the XI was John Terry, I believe. Its legal, but it's unethical, to put it mildly.

Hope Boga does well. Seemed a good player in that one appearance for Chelsea.

      Chelsea fan here.

It drives me up the wall. Abramovich drives the youth academy like a business, and it ends up doing the club no favours. Look at the talent that has come through that system in recent years! The sad thing is, a number get stuck in limbo with season long loans, sent out to improve and grow, under the impression they will return one day as Chelsea starting XI.

In reality, they're flogged until they get one good season and then sold for a premium, or dumped to a small club at a lower fee. It's like throwing them back to square 1, having wasted a couple years of their career.

Fortunately there's some genuinely talented kids there who are able to recover their careers, and then get re-bought by Chelsea at stupid prices...

That's not even touching on the young talent we bought, did poorly, then sold only for them to explode a la Salah etc

    4. Mikeharbrw
      • 11 Years
      5 years, 8 months ago

Full disclosure- I'm a Chelsea fan.

I'm surprised that the league does not do something more to clamp down on young player loan deals. We've pretty much built a revenue stream off of the buy em young and then loan them / sell them for profit.

However, I would disagree that a kid would not want to go to Chelsea's academy. The players will benefit from excellent coaching and world-class facilities and then the one's that have the talent will invariably get first team football somewhere if not at the Bridge.

Think of it as a farm but if the meat turns out extra good they can bring them back. Turning out class players who have had the benefit of the academy.

Worries about the amount of yellow/red cards coming season (had 17 yellow and 2 red in two seasons at Leipzig)?

No, and whilst he has looked great he won’t be getting an assist per game in the league. More likely to be that busy midfielder assisting the assisted, but could still chip in with the odd return.

agree with this, plus you might need all 3 liverpool slots and likely you dont want Keita taking one. Salah, Robbo plus another is plausible

Just whipped together a juicy 343.

    Patricio.
    Robertson. PVA. Coleman.
    Salah(c). Eriksen. Mahrez. Siggy.
    Lacazette. King. Wood.

Norris. Kenedy. Wan Bissaka. Bennett. 0.0ITB. 0FT. WC in tact.

Thoughts? Only issue I see is if an expensive forward starts firing but I'd be on Salah permaC.

I like, it’s different. Not sure on any spurs though, would rather a city double up.

I think Eriksen with (new, FUL) could tear it up. Could switch to a City mid after we see them lineup away at the Emirates.

like the front line. The only potential issue I can perhaps see is def, i'd look to upgrade one of your 4.0 to a nailed 4.5. Just to cover you if shaw isnt nailed and the random robbo rest

Something like Schelotto, Jota & 4.5m mid to Cedric, Costa and Cairney/Hughes/Kennedy.

Like Gross pick. I think your bench is too weak, especially considering you have both Cedric and Kenedy in your starting 11.

    A) Aguero, Lacazette, Lamela
    B) Aubameyang, Josh King, Sane

Other attackers I plan to have are: Salah, Mahrez, Jota, Tosun

I'm bad at this game. RMT?

    Ederson - Speroni

    Robertson - Shaw - Cédric - Douglas - Wan-Bissaka

    Hazard - Eriksen - Sané - Deulofeu - Neves

    Agüero - Firmino - Jiménez

Douglas (WOL) a guaranteed starter or overpriced at 5m? Seems to love an assist..

I must say it feels extremely good to have a team with a solid bench. So much anguish last season hoping my first 11 would start and then getting disappointed every other week. Much less stressful when you know a player with at least some potential to get more than 2 points will come on (like Neves or Hughes) instead of Dunk/Mariappa/Romeu guaranteed 1 pointer There is so much rotation at the top teams with deep squads these days. A good bench is necessary.

I think a balance is key. Currently i'm looking at a bench of Cedric/Tomkins, Stephens and Peltier. All should start and two have the chance of returns whilst only spending 0.5 over baseline player prices

Agreed. The only position I'm willing to have as bench fodder now is my second keeper (not rotating). Forces a more tactical approach.

I'm actually going to do the opposite this year. I tried to have a really balanced team last season and ended up with a much higher tally of benched points than anyone else in my ML. It was great to know I had good cover for any rotation or injury issues, but other than on the odd occasion notable occasion, the players being subbed in didn't provide a huge points input into my weekly score and arguably a stronger starting 11 in the first place would have provided a similar return.
