Great Expectations

Potential for Pogba to have best-ever FPL season in 2018/19

Fresh from scoring in the World Cup final and winning the coveted trophy with France, Paul Pogba (£8.0m) could be about to record his best ever season with Manchester United.

The midfielder may miss the first few weeks of the campaign but across the course of 2018/19 there is great potential for him to be an important Fantasy Premier League asset.

A thigh muscle injury between September and November restricted Pogba to just 27 appearances for the Red Devils last season, but he still managed to record his highest ever FPL score of 138 from six goals and 13 assists. No United player was the provider for more goals and only Romelu Lukaku (£11.0m) was involved in more than him.

We’ve had a look at some of the reasons why we expect Pogba to improve on that over the next 12 months, even if he will miss the first few weeks of the campaign through extended World Cup leave.

NEW POSITION

The arrival of Fred (£6.0m) at Old Trafford should allow Pogba more freedom to commit to attack this season. With the new signing potentially sat alongside Nemanja Matic (£5.0m) in holding midfield, Pogba will have less defensive responsibilities to concern himself with. Although it must be said that he particularly shone in a slightly deeper role for France next to N’Golo Kante (£5.0m) and Steven N’Zonzi in the World Cup final. At the same time, Jesse Lingard (£7.0m) earned Jose Mourinho’s favour playing as the central attacking midfielder in 2017/18 and Pogba may have to displace him if he hopes to play further up the pitch.

SHOTS FIRED

Pogba clearly has an eye for goal and should surpass his previous goal tally of six this season. Only six midfielders had more shots last season, despite him only playing 27 games. In fact, out of the Premier League’s most trigger happy midfielders in 2017/18, only Mohamed Salah (4.0) and Alexis Sánchez (2.83) averaged more shots per game than Pogba’s 2.81. The Frenchman even registered more shots per match than Lukaku’s 2.5, although the Belgian striker was more accurate. A large number of those efforts came from outside of opposing penalty areas but if Pogba does earn a more advanced role the percentage of those taken inside the box would likely increase.

IN THE MONEY

On the whole, Pogba offered better value than any of Manchester United’s regular starting attacking assets last season. His points-per-match (ppm) of 5.1 could not be beaten by anyone at Old Trafford. The more expensive Alexis Sánchez (£10.5m) came in at 4.9 ppm, Lukaku’s was 4.76 ppm while Lingard, while cheaper, had a points-per-match of 3.87. Even if Pogba retains his position in deeper midfield he could still prove better value across the season than Sánchez and Lukaku who are £2.5m and £3.0m dearer than him respectively.

I know footballers are stereotypically 'thick' but if they couldn't work this out DURING THE WHOLE OF LAST SEASON it's probably 'cos they are:

        a) Incredibly stupid or
        b) they did work it out but could do sod all about it.

        Either way, Salah wins.

i don't know about 30 goals but let me tell you - hard to see him getting less than 15.

15+ goals for a midfielder still easily 200+ points. Easily worth 13.0. Think about that

I get the argument for no Salah. But for me the fear factor alone is enough to get him.

He's owned by half of all FPL managers. He doesn't perform, no big deal. He gets a brace or a hattie and you're already left chasing 20 points right from the off. Not to mention that you're gonna have to correctly guess the captain every week (Aguero, Auba etc.) to try and counteract Salah(C)

He doesn't perform, no big deal?

If he doesn't perform and the players you picked instead of him do then you gain points on 50% of the game.

Those 50% of non owners will get ahead of course... but they would not get as far ahead as in the case where Salah would perform and leave them behind.

Hard to word that. But basically Salah would put you further ahead by performing, than it would leave you behind by him not performing.

On what basis are you making that claim?

If Salah blanks and the players I got don't then I will gain just as much as Salah owners would.

Salah doesn't hit his 'ceiling' every time he doesn't blank.

Yes if he gets a hat trick while my players blank then I will fall behind but there is no reason the opposite won't happen.

Based on the fact that non-owners have a wide distribution of alternative captains who may or may not blank, but because they aren't concentrated into a single player (like Salah), won't have the same affect as 'missing out' on Salah's points due to the high captaincy+ownership of Salah.

            I don't get this 50% argument.
By that logic If he doesn't perform 50% would be doing better then you if AubameyangAguero/Mane/Sane get's a hattie then you are chasing 20 points etc?
Getting no salah enables me to afford all these players and get a decent defence.

Take your point, but Hysteria is correct, I think. Wolves are a much better team - in fact, they're going to finish about 9th, aren't they? So you could see it instead as a top-half team's primary attacking asset for 6.5, and then it feels a lot more logical. More than anything, it's just a great price-point. So many 6.5mids to choose from - the chances of guessing correctly are slim. But Jota could be a steal. I'm currently on Lamela, though - convinced, as I am, that Son will be out for months.

            Could just go without Salah...

            Ederson
            Bellerin, Van Aanholt, Colan, Robertson
            Mane, David Silva, Sane
            Firmino, Tosun, Aubameyang

Annoyingly much better team but can't risk no Salah?

    Thoughts on this team ?

    Begovic//Ryan

    Bailey//Clyne//Pereira //Jagielka//Wan Bissaka

    Salah//Mahrez//Martial//Deulofeu//Stephens

    Aguero//FIrmino//Tosun

I have thought of downgrading Firmino or Tosun to upgrade the defence a bit as I am aware that Clyne and Jagielka are not nailed

I’m not keen on the keeper combo. Bournemouth don’t do clean sheets. The defence has too many risks eg Clyne and Jags aren’t nailed and Bailly could be dropped gw2 as mentioned. Best not to start off with too many risks or you can ruin your season before it’s begun.

No Salah but how do you rate?

    De Gea

    Robertson, Azpil, Mendy, Douglas

    Eriksen, Mane, Kenedy,

    Firmino, Zaha, Aguero

    Subs: Fabianski, Lookman, Cedric, Masuaku

Really nicely balanced. Not too keen on Azpi or Kenedy but they're not exactly problems.

Anyone else have any No Salah strategies?
No Salah BUT instead using LFC GK and Def .. potential shutout bonus x 2 and foreseeing tight marking/injury potential points reduction odds on Mo.
Keeping Firmino also for 3 LFC players.

The most common 'no salah' strategy i've seen is Mane + Firmino to make up for it.

If you're paying 19.0 to make up for 13.0 player then the answer to your question is right there.

LFC Keeper plus Def could be only 10.5, less than Mo's 13 perhaps Dbl clean sheet bonus too... with change left over..

My team will be something like

      Ederson (speoni)
      VVD robertson Bailly Tarkowski (bennett)
      Sane Mane Sigurdsson (gunarsson stephens)
      Wood Aubameyang Aguero

When Mo blanks in his first few gameweeks there will be hulked posts stating "time to sell salah"
      "Salah worth the money?"

Even jonty will be considering selling!

    Quick RMT.

At the start of the season,I always tend to stick to the structure and almost always WC during the first Intl Break. So how does this look?

    McCarthy Button
    Robertson PVA Bailly Peltier Bennett
    Salah Mahrez Martial Costa Masuaku
    Aguero Firmino Tosun

    Key points:
    1.McCarthy-Till GW 4,Southampton have great fixtures.Hence McCarthy.
2.PVA-Though plenty will ask me to go against PVA,he is the most attacking defender in the league and with Palace's fixtures,he looks too good to turn down.
3.Bailly-The best CB in the meanest defence in the league.Nailed when fit.
4.Bennet,Peltier-Nailed for the start of the season. You cannot ask much more from 4.0m players.
5.Mahrez-Will start for the Blues.Has a higher ceiling than Silva and a lower price than Sane.
6.Costa-The differential. Can't wait to see him in action.
    7.Martial-OOP at 7.5 for a top club.No brainer.Easy to switch for the likes of Ramsey/Mkhi from GW3.

Spreadsheet enthusiast, Ben Crellin, has calculated that City’s run of fixtures between GW2-7 is by far the easiest spell of 6 games of the season for any team.

Agüero & Ederson are now firmly locked into my team for the start of he season.

I’m not convinced one or both of Sané/Mahrez will maintain their positions throughout, so I may hold on the 3rd City spot until KDB is back.

Aubameyang, I’m afraid you are also on hold buddy.

I will also bring in Arsenal players GW3.

I honestly don't know who's looking at this rationally and deciding 'No Salah'. We've seen that generally 2400 points will win you FPL. So 600 points are worth 25.0. If Salah matches last season and you captain him all season that's 600 points for 13.0.

So yes, I'd get Salah for 25.0

hows everyone feel about everton this year amd who are the guys to look at , i currently have tosun and pickford in my team because of the strong start and less options up front than in midfield (siggy) anyone im missing.?

    1. A.T
      • 13 Years

If they perform well they have some of the best value players in the game. Walcott, Lookman, Baines and Coleman are the others worth looking at. They could also have a 4.5 defender although at this stage it is uncertain who that may be.

    2. Lebowski85
      • 11 Years
      5 years, 9 months ago

As an Everton fan, it's very much work in progress. I'd expect us to score way more than last year, so there could be value in our midfield. Lookman could be set for a break through year as we have promised him first team football. Siggy will finally play through the middle, so should hit form and takes set pieces. Tosun should benefit from a full pre-season. He looked clinical but off the pace when he joined, I personally think he could be a steal at 7.0

Pickford could be a set and forget option for me, but Silva sides aren't known for being water tight. Im waiting to see who emerges at 4.5

It does. All the more reason to notice their first two fixtures and wait-and-see. if you have defenders at the 5.0 and 5.5 points, an Arenal switch when we know what's happening around GW3 makes sense. Attacking assets could score from the off, though.
