Best Manchester United players to sign in 2018/19 – Complete Members’ Analysis

Defence looks to be where Fantasy Premier League managers will concentrate on in 2018/19 when it comes to Manchester United.

No top flight side kept more clean sheets than the Red Devils last season thanks to some stellar work from David De Gea.

However, Jose Mourinho’s men have some work to do to convince Fantasy managers to invest in their attack after an underwhelming end to 2017/18 offensively.

We’ve analysed all the data on Man United to work out which players look best for investment this season.

Fantasy Football Scout members can view that data in the Members’ Area and also read our full analysis of it below to help them pick the best possible FPL team this season.

    Nailed it.

    Pickford
    Coleman - Douglas - Robertson
    Salah - Mahrez - Jota - Richarlison - Cairney
    Aguero - Firminho

    Fabianski - Cedric - Tomkins - Mir

A previous draft had both. I sacrificed one. No money left in the bank so for now it's Mahrez unless I downgrade a defender or a midfielder.

But given that I've totally nailed it and created the ultimate team there is no need to.

Agree with double Everton. Coleman to a United defender perhaps? And seeing as you have salah, I'd be tempted to downgrade Firminho to upgrade one of the three cheap mids

    Leno (Stek)
    Robbo, Bailly, Shaw, Stones (Douglas)
    Salah, Mane, Sane, Mahrez, Mkhi,
    Wood (Sorloth, Kamara)

    Thoughts?

Fine as long as you have Salah(c) permanent. There is little value in a 10m+ player unless you plan to captain them. That is why I have not got Salah and gone with Auba / Aguero as my (c) options.

I know, hence Douglas waiting in the wings.
My 2 fodder strikers are fluid - who ever is likely to start and bag 2 points will make the final cut.
I'd rather make a slow start in GW1 than end up making 2-3 transfers GW2 to get in late returners. It's a squad for the long haul.

The age-old template is 2 or 3 big hitters up top. I think that's inefficient. The mega points last season was in quality midfield, and the gap between the Top 4-6 and the rest is vast, hence I anticipate most of the clean sheets coming from the top sides.
This balance is, I believe, unorthodox but a better one than the template.

Nope, a squad for the long haul, as I wrote. Obviously the points are in defence and midfield. Forward lines are over-rated unless the armband is there. I'm standing by it; we'll see.

Interesting idea but I'd be nervous each week with all 3 of those City players. Though i will likely have Sane too as we don't really have much choice. Shaw we need to wait and see on too.

Yeah, I was toying with Pogba but I can't go above 7m for my 5th (!) Mid.

Triple City is a must. I'm expecting them to run away with the league with Liverpool in hot pursuit, so I'm committed to 6 from those 2. Tripling up is not the problem; it's the rotation.

Lamela is a good call but I'm expecting Spurs to get off to a slow start due to too many away fixtures and too many world cup returnees. I think the starting XI will be disjointed, thus I'm avoiding all spurs assets at the start.

shaw will drop out once young is back
      stones not nailed

Shaw is a risk but I think he'll be determinted to make the most of his opportunity and could well nail the position.
Stones - yes, but I can straight swap for Kompany or Laporte, whoever turns out to be most secure.
United - again if Jones ot Lindelhof turn out to be more favoured, IFT can fix that.
City midfield rotation - yes, that's my biggest worry, but look at the ridiculous scores they totalled last season even with rotation.
Leno - My first choices were Ederson and Alisson but I've alreadt tripled. DDG will get more points but not the best value. I'm confident in Arsenal's new manager and his defensive purchases (esp Torreira) fill me with confidence.
Wood - again, I'm confident he's great value and overlooked. But the front line is where I'll use most of my transfers, picking up cheap flavour-of-the-week punts. Remember, I'm expecting least from that layer, the opposite of the template hive-mind.

Fair enough, might have foten a bit carried away after Mourinhos comments. Had Sanchez before that thinking he might be in for a great second season at United. Martial should be nailed on for the start and pretty much always does well when he gers game time. Long term there are probably better options. I do think like you about Shaw though, feels like a few really good performances and he might nail down that spot!

Your problem would come if striker above 6.5 becomes essential early on. You are looking at multiple transfers to try catch price rises etc IMO.

      1. Andy_Social
        • 11 Years
        5 years, 9 months ago

no. The key here is the structure - investing heavily in defence and midfield at the expense of attack. I fully expect a striker to form a bandwagon - Kane, Auba, Aguero, Lukakau or whoever. I'd stand by my structure and look to my weekly totals to be on average better than ones who caught the magic striker but have template defs/mids.

Consider, a squad without ever having Kane but with these midfielders (and Salah as perma-cap) could have won FPL last year.

Structure means having different price points covered. Imo you do not.

The reality is a template will appear as it always does and no maverick team will ever win. Some players will simply emerge as too good value to pass up on.

Oh and from personal experience last season, playing 451 is hugely frustrating as the bench players tend to score max 2 points. There is much more value in 4.5 mil defenders to come off the bench.

This is why although different formations may score similarly, for me there is much advantage to having cleans sheets coming off bench opposed to mehhh strikers who mostly will score 2 points.

Like the structure, if not all of the personnel. I was even entertaining the idea of going Salahless and captaining Auba to spread funds around even more.

If I went without Salah I could upgrade all the defenders who are maybe not nailed, but then I'd have captaincy dilemmas. It's a possibility though.

I really rate Auba as a semi-perma captain, but fixtures + new defensively minded coach leaves me with too many questions. Thinking of starting with Salah and reassess after GW3

It works. I wrote an article last year that compared all the formations and there was very little difference between them. In fact 343 was one of the worst, but the points difference was less than 2 per week. It’s more to pick guys that have value than how they lineup and I think you have that.

      Leno (4)
      Robbo (5) Bailly (4) Shaw (4.5) Stones (4)
      Salah(8+8) Mane (5), Sane (5.5), Mahrez (5.5), Mkhi (5)
      Wood (4.5)
Ballpark estimated weekly points, gives 61 points, which is competitive. The winner is around 65.

My only concern would be are Bailly Shaw and stones regular starters.

      1. Andy_Social
        • 11 Years

Thanks for that. I found your articles last year very inspiring and they are certainly a major influence on my current philosophy.

I agree those defenders are a bit of a gamble, but as I say there are similarly-priced United and City defenders who could work as 1Ft straight swaps with a bit of luck.

I've been working on a non-Salah version that would offer more guaranteed starts, Kevin and Bobby, but leave me with the captain dilemma. Anyone want to assess my Mark II?

        Leno (Stek)
        Robbo, Bailly, Shaw, (Douglas, Doherty)
De Bruyne, Mahrez, Sane, Mane, Pogba
        Firmino (Sorloth, Quaner)

Depends what you mean by potential - but Richarlison has better fixtures, knows the league and will be playing for a manager who loves him.

I can see your point mate but it doesn’t apply in all cases (Michu, Austin, Mahrez, Vardy etc.) Richarlisons stats isn’t very impressive from last season but he has got potential. No doubt. Especially if he goes to a better team. However I think that Felipe Anderson is an interesting pick as well. But as I said, I get your point and in many aspects you are right. I understand your point but in my opinion FPL is a marathon not a sprint. It is more beneficial to pick players that almost guarantee attacking returns and slowly climb through the ranks. I'm not saying Anderson won't play well, but it's risky. And I think Richarlison is better pick only if he moves to Everton, otherwise I don't know. And in my opinion Richarlison had very good statistics last season, lot of chances but in the second half of the year the had problem with finishing.

Who do you see as better value?

    A) Firmino + 7m mid
    B) Sane + 7m striker

    Thanks.

      Million dollar question this one.
Tosun, Mikhi, gross, Yarmolenko, Zaha... all have potential to be explosive, consistent or frustrating

I'd go A as Firminho is nailed and there are more 7m mid options

Eriksen for Sane to have spurs cover?

5, pretty mixed for me. I like a lot of what you have but I don’t like:

      1. No Salah.

      2. Alonso probably a risk and less attacking now Chelsea likely to play a back 4.

      3. No bench

      4. TAA a rotation risk & likely to miss start of season.

I’d switch Alonso to Robertson and use the other 0.5 to get a 4.5 defender for your bench.

Now the problem here is the English transfer window closes in 3 weeks but France and other Euro countries have more time. A few PL clubs could face a disastrous situation where players down tools and demand a transfer to the continent when their home PL club cannot get a replacement.

Interesting how people are getting excited about finding value in United players that will start the season. They struggled to break teams down at full strength, not sure how people like martial will start tearing it up all of a sudden with key players missing.

Completely agree. Some rose tinted specs on here. Just because Martial is only 7.5m doesn’t mean he’s worth a 2-3 game spell and a guaranteed transfer thereafter. Mou’s teams rarely rip teams apart to justify having him for such a short spell IMO.

      1. Andy_Social
        • 11 Years
        5 years, 9 months ago

To be fair, they got off to a silly start least season, banging in 4 goals a game for the first few weeks against weak opposition, until Mou reverted to anti-football as soon as they met quality. I don't expect them to do that this time especially if they start without Pogs and Lucky, but I do think they're the best bet for clean sheets.

Clean sheet wise I certainly agree, but as fond as the attacking start for Utd was last season they soon reverted back to type under Mou and I expect that to continue this season rather than becoming the rare goal machine side again that they had a brief spell with.

From what I remember though, I think those scorelines were really flattering (?)

Didn't loads of those goals come in the last 15 minutes once they brought Fellaini on as a battering ram? Before that I seem to remember they were struggling to create.

Aye, 10 of the 21 goals came in minute 80 or later. But that also says they didn´t stop trying to score(which is a widespread ´knowledge´ on here).

For me, I wouldn’t want to have players in that will only play 2 games then be benched. Every season there are a couple of players in most people’s squad that don’t work out as planned and need changed. I wouldn’t want to have players I know I’ll definitely need to change before it’s started.

  17. AndyCook
      5 years, 9 months ago

Does anyone else think Mahrez will score less points this season rather than more? Rotation risk, loss of set-pieces and players that are talismen in their teams tend to score more points because their team is set-up to make the most of them e.g Eriksen is more productive for Denmark than Spurs even though Spurs a much better side.

            I think he’ll score more.

Should be nailed on, on set pieces, lots more goals from the Man City side so Mahrez should get lots of goal involvement, extra opportunity for clean sheet points too which should make a difference.

            1. AndyCook
                5 years, 9 months ago

Likely lesser share of set pieces, didn’t think about clean sheet points to be honest but you could say less appearance points a possible small drawback. In draft I think he would be a lesser pick at City but if you can predict his output then possibly a better option

It's possible, but now he's in a team that created twice as many chances as Leicester did last season and you'd expect him to therefore be more involved. Smaller slice of bigger pie!

                  5 years, 9 months ago

Smaller slice of a bigger pie is a great way to look at it. I guess what it comes down to is having him when he plays/if he plays a lot. Not sure he’d interest me early in draft

Think there's better value in defence and midfield at that value, so if you're going 5.5 striker you may as well drop to a 4.5 one and put the million somewhere else

Um, that's why they're 5.5 or less! Look for one that's likely to start, not one who's likely to score. At the moment from the promoted sides there's Reid, Kamara or 2 or 3 Wolves options.

Costs a fortune, enough that he has to hit the ground running. Probably not needed for a captain if you have Salah so arguably he has to do even better to justify that price. I’m not convinced he is a better option than Salah so at 12.5 non captain he has to be scoring about 7 ppg for me at 12 million - notconvonced he will do that at the start having seen him for England

Are there other OCD afflicted individuals like me on here who have to try to arrange the players in their screen formation to reflect their true life positions (Sane on the left wing etc.)? I also can't stand having two players from the same team adjacent to each other, it makes the jersey colour distribution look all wrong.

What happens when you have two players at the same price, how do you sub-rank them? By seniority in your squad, alphabetically etc.? What would you do if one of them were your captain?

                      I do this 😆

Current draft is a 4-4-2 and has Coleman at right back, Robbo left back. Problem is I also have Shaw & Mendy looking out of place as the centre backs 😆

On the whole a very nice team.

My main concerns would be Daniels and Masuaku. Not sure how West Ham will line up but with all the new players and players they already had he’s got a lot of competition.

I think he will because he is very important to the team and Brazil didn’t go that deep but until he reports for pre-season I wouldn’t be certain

Are people not setting their team up for a International break wildcard? It makes sense given players returning late from the World Cup and fixture swings. Load up on Liverpool, Utd, City for the first three.

Happy to wildcard in the 1st break....But great if I can save it....

Think it's a mistake to set up with a single wildcard strategy in mind.

Inevitably, I'll be wildcarding relatively early, but am trying to put a team together that is set up for success beyond a few fixtures and is flexible enough to incorporate returning players once they are available.

Would be loading up on City and Liverpool players anyway. And probably a United defender.

Too hard, if players surprise you and come back early or late then you’re scuppered. Seems likely they won’t all come back at the same time too. This is more of a risk of you have punts who will leave the team when the first choice comes back rather than missing returning players for a week or two

Interesting line of thought. Although I've pickef mine with early WC in mind, I havent fully commited to the strategy. Hoping for a possible saving of WC, but may have to accept its inevitability.

Anything I need to consider here at this stage?

                            Fabianski Bettinelli

                            Aubameyang Tosun Wood

I’m keeping an eye on the Mitrovic situation and which 4m defender is most secure.

Can Mane and Firmino make up for not having Salah, yes or no? Personally, i think it's too not have Salah(C) as an option.

most will say no, and I agree somewhat - but it really depends on what your alternative captain does

Last season I kept jumping around with the armband and more often missed than hit. I'd prefer to tattoo it on Salah's arm this season. Without Salah, there's no permanent option.

Opinion on this team (mainly non-wc players)

                            Foster / Fabianski
                            Robertson / Coleman / Shaw / Cedric / Peltier
                            Salah / Sanchez / Richarlison / Jota / Ward
                            Aubameyang / Tosun / Arnie

Would like to fit somehow Sane or Mahrez and Siggy. 0,0 ITB
