Jota a viable “out of position” FPL option

A starting price of £6.5m for a midfielder who plays for a club newly promoted to the Premier League is an eyebrow-raiser.

But then, Diogo Jota – who has UEFA Champions League experience and 14 Portugal under-21 caps to his name – is no ordinary, Championship-level midfield workhorse and Wolverhampton Wanderers are no naive top-flight rookies.

While survival will be the primary target for Nuno Espirito Santo’s side next season, the West Midlands club has significant financial resources, access to a well-connected super-agent, an intelligent head coach and a gifted young squad that should see them hold their own in the Premier League.

Jota was one of six astute loan signings made by Santo last season (including centre-half Willy Boly and striker Leo Bonatini), all of whom played a part in Wolves’ promotion-winning campaign.

The 21-year-old attacking midfielder’s contribution was as important as any Wolves player’s in 2017/18, with Jota finishing as the Championship winners’ leading goal-scorer on 17 league goals.

Jota has made his move to Molineux permanent over the summer, the deal having been agreed with parent club Atletico Madrid in January.

While fellow Portuguese star Ruben Neves (£5.0m) – sitting in over 15% of Fantasy Premier League squads – is the most popular Wolves asset in FPL at this early stage, Jota has also attracted significant investment – his ownership of 8.1% is higher than that of Theo Walcott, Richarlison and Cesc Fabregas, among others, in the same price band.

The History

Having spent his formative years with Gondomar SC and Pacos Ferreira, Jota began his senior career with the latter club in 2014/15.

Scoring one goal and assisting another on his debut in Pacos’ 4-0 cup win over Atletico SC Reguengos, Jota then went on to make ten league appearances for the Primeira Liga side, scoring on a further two occasions.

An excellent 2015/16 season in which he scored 12 Portuguese top-flight goals led to a move to Atletico Madrid, but the young attacking midfielder was not to make a solitary appearance for the Spanish giants.

A season-long loan with Porto in 2016/17 saw Jota in and out of the first team, with 12 of his 27 league appearances coming as a substitute. The youngster was on the scoresheet on eight occasions, three of which came in the 4-0 win over Nacional early in the season.

Jota’s first taste of Champions League action peaked with a goal in the 5-0 win over Leicester City in December of that campaign.

That Wolves were able to convince the young Portuguese midfielder to move to a side playing in the English second tier in the summer of 2017 demonstrated the club’s financial muscle and ambition.

As well as scoring on 17 occasions, Jota registered five assists across Wolves’ promotion-winning campaign.

The Prospects

Playing much of last season on the left of a front three in Santo’s unwavering 3-4-3 formation, Jota has also, on occasion, been deployed as the spearhead in the Wolves attack.

Jota indeed started as the nominated “centre-forward” in Wolves’ 1-1 friendly draw with Ajax, with fellow Portuguese wingers Helder Costa and Diego Cavaleiro flanking him.

It remains to be seen in which position Jota starts the season and all eyes will be on Wolves’ remaining four pre-season friendlies to ascertain further clues. Jota certainly has competition up top: Mexican striker Raul Jimenez has arrived from parent club Benfica on a season-long deal, while Wolves have made Leo Bonatini’s loan move a permanent one over the summer.

Bonatini scored on 12 occasions in 2017/18 but all of his goals came in the first half of the season, with the Brazilian striker subsequently enduring a five-month barren spell and losing his place in the side.

Santo may, meanwhile, decide to gradually ease Jimenez into English football following his loan move. The Mexico international is far from guaranteed to plunder league goals: in four seasons with Atletico Madrid and Benfica, Jimenez has not hit double figures once.

Jimenez’s physicality and ability to bring his team-mates into play may ultimately see him lead the line, but Jota is a goal threat in whichever position he plays. The Portuguese midfielder, indeed, scored in the 2-1 win over Basel on July 10 while drifting in from the left flank.

Jota’s total of 120 goal attempts last season was unsurpassed by any other Wolves player (only Brentford’s Ollie Watkins had more in the Championship), as was his minutes-per-shot average of 30.3.

Eighty-three of Jota’s 120 shots were from inside the opposition penalty area; those tempted by Ruben Neves’ budget price should note that the £5.0m-rated midfielder only had three efforts on goal from inside the box.

Jota also edged his compatriot in terms of creativity, producing 53 key passes to Neves’ 37.

Appearing in 44 of Wolves’ 46 league matches last season, Jota looks like a fairly nailed pick this time out – something that can’t be said for several other midfielders in the £6.5m price bracket (Juan Mata, Pedro, Cesc Fabregas, Erik Lamela etc).

Wolves face only two of last season’s top six sides in the first ten Gameweeks, a run of fixtures that includes home matches against Everton, Burnley, Southampton and Watford.

Whilst spending £6.5m on a midfielder playing for a newly promoted side constitutes something of a “punt”, this is a Wolves squad with a wealth of international and European experience to their name. The step up to the Premier League should be far less daunting for Jota and co than it will be for the average top-flight new boys.

There’s a very good chance I’ll be riding the Jota wagon.

Is him, Bennett and Douglas overkill though?

If he's going to be on the bench permanently, then I don't see how he would interfere with Jota and Douglas, so I don't see a problem with a triple up on those grounds.

If you were looking for an option to cover Douglas' poor fixtures, then it Bennet would obviously not be a good option 🙂

Likewise Douglas and Jota would be overkill if you were open to benching both of them in dire fixtures, unless you had a deep enough bench to cover it. But my guess is that you'd keep Jota permanently in your XI. If so, again a triple up is not a problem.

      I’d go for A.

Also because there is a lack of good 7.0 striker options and a plethora of good 6.5 mid options imo, in case Jota/Zaha doesn’t work out and you need to get rid.

Newcastle got 94 points in their promotion season, Wolves got 99 in theirs, not a huge difference.

Not saying Jota or others won't be good value, but expectations need to be managed.

I actually think it is a big difference. That’s 5 points over a season. Reading got 106.

Yeah I get what you’re saying though we can’t go in expecting the new Mahrez or Vardy etc

Looking through the Reading example a striker getting 12 or so goals is best case. So Jota.

He's the best attacking defender on Everton's team but I think it's open to debate how good his defensive prospects may be given Marco Silvas attack minded philosophy with Watford last season.
In my team at the moment and with a great opening run he is hard to ignore....

Wouldn't say that - but I am having a few doubts about him.

Primarily because I want to see evidence that he will be allowed by Silva to make those attacking runs (not really seen that in pre-season yet) and the emergence of Bailly as a 5.5m alternative.

Douglas & Jota could be good fun to start with for GW1, maybe even backed up by Patricio, Costa, or Neves. Or Boly or Bennet.

Wolves actually do look tripleable assuming they don’t turn into whipping boys which I highly doubt. None of them break the bank & we need cheap players in our squads.

Also they are in the 17:30 evening kickoff on Saturday at home to a very attacking Silva team...it would be nice to have 2 or 3 players in that game for entertainment value.

    Ederson 4m
    Robbo Coleman Bailly Cedric 4m
    Mo Mahrez Siggy Mhkitaryan Jota

Like it. I'd go with Bailly over Coleman but just a preference. You could also, for example, do Siggy/Ramsay and Walcott/Richarlison(?)/another 6.5 and reinvest the extra into the bench. Schneiderlin to Costa/Cairney, maybe? Good luck!

Isn't Shaw a risky option? Young will play left back once he is "back" from the world cup

Shaw is only a good option for the start of the season really and we can't say for definite that he will be nailed when Young is back or if they sign another left back etc. Avoid

That will probably happen. Shaw may keep his place if he performs well. I don’t expect Shaw to play 38 games though.

But could coincide with TAA’s return 🙂

So many fantastic midfield options in the 5 - 6.5 bracket. Lamela, Neves, Jota, Deulofeu, Maddison, Hughes, Kenedy, Cairney, hopefully even Fabregas if he gets the nod.

Watford in 17/18 under Silva in the PL: 24 games, 5 CS (bou, BHA, sou, WHU, new)
Hull in 16/17 under Silva in the PL: 18 games, 4 CS (mun, LIV, sou, WAT)

Everton to struggle for clean sheets this season, or do you expect them to do significantly better than Watford and Hull due to having better players?

I think his priority has always been to attack and outscore rather than defend. Good for goals and attractive football, bad for cleanies!

I agree with this but they do have a great opening run with 3 home matches which could easily see clean sheets. Coleman looks a good prospect for first 5 to 6 weeks and if the clean sheets don't come we can just move on.

5.0 for a defender playing for a promoted team is madness if you ask me. Completely unproven in the Premier League.

Even as a wingback, with set pieces? He only needs to score 3 or 4 goals & get 3 or 4 assists to add to 8 or 9 cleansheets & he’s straightaway great value

No, I want a proven player. Put him in if you want, I suspect that you'll be trying to get rid of him for much of the second half of the season but will always have something slightly more pressing that will prevent you from doing so.

They were a class above the championship last year, clean sheets may be an issue if they try and play football against the big boys I agree. However, they should still be able to attack with vigour and I think they will score plenty of goals against poor defensive teams such as Bournemouth and West ham.

Not sure I would class Everton, Leicester, West Ham or Burnley as “big boys” and everyone risks getting leathered by city. But I get what you are saying.

The more I read about Wolves the more impressed I am by their manager in particular though, they strike me as a genuine team unit who have a system & know their roles etc. They don’t have any of the classic warning signs of potential relegation fodder of a newer big name manager, panic big name signings etc.

Will be very interesting to see but there’s nothing stopping them from getting a top 12 or even top half if they adapt well.

I could see them beating Everton to nil maybe on the opening GW1 fixture & their players will bandwagon from there, as at the end of the day if they don’t perform, it’s no great loss as no great investment.

Good upside with low downside in summary!

The thing that worries me is that the teams that tend to do well when promoted are those defensively minded. Wolves are not, playing 433 and on the deck. Risky!

Are Wolves not very defensive minded though? I think they prioritised defence over attack last year, and from looking at their stats, they low goals conceded, and not stellar goals scored for the championship... I could be totally wrong on this.

I know they were top scorers in the champo but would 90-95 goals not be the hallmarks of a more attacking championship team...

Fast forwarding to GW2... would you captain Salah over Kun if you had both?

On paper surely not... but I don’t know if I could take the stress of waiting for city’s teamsheet if I captained Kun. Then the stress of hoping he doesn’t get crocked inside 10 mins... then waiting for him to score. Then hoping he doesn’t get subbed on 60 mins.

It might be just me but I always find owning Kun to be bad for the blood pressure!

At least Salah is pretty much fire & forget, nailed and fixture proof. Whereas Kun is just fixture proof, he’s not nailed?

I missed the 5 goals as well, and got him in after that & he wrecked my team, I think the car crash injury happened & he just could never get a clean run for weeks after that.

Very tempted to just setup with 2 city mids & instead of Kun & take it on the chin if he scores 5 v Huddersfield.

Think I'm happy with this 3-4-3

        4.5 [4.0]
        Robertson * Mendy/Bavies * Shaw [Cedric, 4.0]
        Salah * Sánchez * Fraser * Hughes [4.5]
        Aubam * Bobby F * Zaha/Arnie

Start with Sanchez, look towards KdB, Sané after GW3 or 7.5s if they take off. Flexibility with big hitters covered

weak 3rd and 4th midfielders who aren't nailed to start necessarily but strong elsewhere. I'd just go Sane over Sanchez from the start to be honest as City will score more goals than United for sure this season and in the opening weeks as well.
