Jota a viable “out of position” FPL option

A starting price of £6.5m for a midfielder who plays for a club newly promoted to the Premier League is an eyebrow-raiser.

But then, Diogo Jota – who has UEFA Champions League experience and 14 Portugal under-21 caps to his name – is no ordinary, Championship-level midfield workhorse and Wolverhampton Wanderers are no naive top-flight rookies.

While survival will be the primary target for Nuno Espirito Santo’s side next season, the West Midlands club has significant financial resources, access to a well-connected super-agent, an intelligent head coach and a gifted young squad that should see them hold their own in the Premier League.

Jota was one of six astute loan signings made by Santo last season (including centre-half Willy Boly and striker Leo Bonatini), all of whom played a part in Wolves’ promotion-winning campaign.

The 21-year-old attacking midfielder’s contribution was as important as any Wolves player’s in 2017/18, with Jota finishing as the Championship winners’ leading goal-scorer on 17 league goals.

Jota has made his move to Molineux permanent over the summer, the deal having been agreed with parent club Atletico Madrid in January.

While fellow Portuguese star Ruben Neves (£5.0m) – sitting in over 15% of Fantasy Premier League squads – is the most popular Wolves asset in FPL at this early stage, Jota has also attracted significant investment – his ownership of 8.1% is higher than that of Theo Walcott, Richarlison and Cesc Fabregas, among others, in the same price band.

The History

Having spent his formative years with Gondomar SC and Pacos Ferreira, Jota began his senior career with the latter club in 2014/15.

Scoring one goal and assisting another on his debut in Pacos’ 4-0 cup win over Atletico SC Reguengos, Jota then went on to make ten league appearances for the Primeira Liga side, scoring on a further two occasions.

An excellent 2015/16 season in which he scored 12 Portuguese top-flight goals led to a move to Atletico Madrid, but the young attacking midfielder was not to make a solitary appearance for the Spanish giants.

A season-long loan with Porto in 2016/17 saw Jota in and out of the first team, with 12 of his 27 league appearances coming as a substitute. The youngster was on the scoresheet on eight occasions, three of which came in the 4-0 win over Nacional early in the season.

Jota’s first taste of Champions League action peaked with a goal in the 5-0 win over Leicester City in December of that campaign.

That Wolves were able to convince the young Portuguese midfielder to move to a side playing in the English second tier in the summer of 2017 demonstrated the club’s financial muscle and ambition.

As well as scoring on 17 occasions, Jota registered five assists across Wolves’ promotion-winning campaign.

The Prospects

Playing much of last season on the left of a front three in Santo’s unwavering 3-4-3 formation, Jota has also, on occasion, been deployed as the spearhead in the Wolves attack.

Jota indeed started as the nominated “centre-forward” in Wolves’ 1-1 friendly draw with Ajax, with fellow Portuguese wingers Helder Costa and Diego Cavaleiro flanking him.

It remains to be seen in which position Jota starts the season and all eyes will be on Wolves’ remaining four pre-season friendlies to ascertain further clues. Jota certainly has competition up top: Mexican striker Raul Jimenez has arrived from parent club Benfica on a season-long deal, while Wolves have made Leo Bonatini’s loan move a permanent one over the summer.

Bonatini scored on 12 occasions in 2017/18 but all of his goals came in the first half of the season, with the Brazilian striker subsequently enduring a five-month barren spell and losing his place in the side.

Santo may, meanwhile, decide to gradually ease Jimenez into English football following his loan move. The Mexico international is far from guaranteed to plunder league goals: in four seasons with Atletico Madrid and Benfica, Jimenez has not hit double figures once.

Jimenez’s physicality and ability to bring his team-mates into play may ultimately see him lead the line, but Jota is a goal threat in whichever position he plays. The Portuguese midfielder, indeed, scored in the 2-1 win over Basel on July 10 while drifting in from the left flank.

Jota’s total of 120 goal attempts last season was unsurpassed by any other Wolves player (only Brentford’s Ollie Watkins had more in the Championship), as was his minutes-per-shot average of 30.3.

Eighty-three of Jota’s 120 shots were from inside the opposition penalty area; those tempted by Ruben Neves’ budget price should note that the £5.0m-rated midfielder only had three efforts on goal from inside the box.

Jota also edged his compatriot in terms of creativity, producing 53 key passes to Neves’ 37.

Appearing in 44 of Wolves’ 46 league matches last season, Jota looks like a fairly nailed pick this time out – something that can’t be said for several other midfielders in the £6.5m price bracket (Juan Mata, Pedro, Cesc Fabregas, Erik Lamela etc).

Wolves face only two of last season’s top six sides in the first ten Gameweeks, a run of fixtures that includes home matches against Everton, Burnley, Southampton and Watford.

Whilst spending £6.5m on a midfielder playing for a newly promoted side constitutes something of a “punt”, this is a Wolves squad with a wealth of international and European experience to their name. The step up to the Premier League should be far less daunting for Jota and co than it will be for the average top-flight new boys.

Really think Ederson is a terrible pick.

Goalie in a team that will gobble up 70%+ possession in every game.
Has very little to do in terms of saves.
City will be cruising in most of their opening 7 GWs by 2, 3 or more goals and won't be too bothered about conceding the occasional consolation goal.
City's opening 7 fixtures are so tasty, it could be a waste of a 3rd route into their team.
Nearly all their other defensive options have good potential for attacking returns.

Personally will start with 2 City attackers and likely add a third player depending on who looks the best fit.

I think there is some truth there, but my counter arguments would be:

      - Pep isn't exactly the type to be happy with daft consolations. They smashed the league last season and got 16 clean sheets. Last season they won three games at home 5-0, 3-0 twice, and 6-0, 4-0 and 3-0 away
      - Ederson was only 14 points off DDG who must have had one of if not the best FPL season ever for a keeper?
      - Their defensive options have a potential for attacking returns but are all considerably less nailed. You could go Otamendi but he's a 6.5m option.
      - The attacking options are all good but unless one is KDB post GW3 or so then it's going to be a scary double up knowing that you might get shafted by Pep's wheel of rotation. It's no good owning Mahrez and Sane in GW4 or something when Pep picks Bernardo and Sterling. No risk with Ederson.

But still I am thinking twice about it and if Schmeichel goes to Chelsea I'm 99% likely to jump ship!

For me it's more about keeping clean sheets than saving points

I agree he's not the best pick, most because i prefer (2x4.5) or (5.0+4.0) but also because he is a City player, taking one slot

Though DDG is a worse pick in my opinion, because I don't think he is worth the extra 0.5m

If this was your team, what would be the first thing you would change (apart from bringing Salah in -_-)

    Ederson
    Robertson | Bailly | Coleman | Douglas | Wan-Bissaka
    Martial | Mané | Sané | Richarlison | D.Ward
    Firmino | Aubameyang | Wood

(After GW2: Martial >> Mkhitaryan and Sané >> De Bruyne)
(Richarlison only if he moves to Everton)

I'd probably be pretty happy. I don't fancy Martial and I don't love planned transfers like that (what if Bailly doesn't start or something and then you've got a couple of problems). But it could work!

    Salah, Mahrez, Rambo, Jota (Hughes)
    Firmino, Arnie, Tosun

Sucks not to have Kun, but I think I like my team enough not to dismantle it just so I can have him somehow. What do you guys think?

    Alisson and Mendy; or

I feel Alisson will get some save points than Ederson, but Robertson is probably edging Mendy.

Pretty much want one defensive option from both teams.

It's hard to have 10 because there's always going to be a weakness somewhere with the 100m budget, but the midfield of Martial/Mkhi/Jota seems a bit risky. One not nailed and out of favour last season, Arsenal a slight unknown quality (don't begrudge the pick) and one new player to the Prem. They could all do well, but give me an Eriksen or similar all day (I guess that's out of budget)!

    etc

Wing backs has sort of died slightly (I wouldn't put that high in my priority list!)

Last pre-season it was all about Alonso, Kolasinac... neither nailed now, and both probably in a back four not as attacking wingbacks!

I'd say don't take risks early with maverick picks would be on my list.

Are there normally this many 4.0 defender options? Can only remember Mbemba being reliable last year. Now we have Wan-Bissaka, Peltier and Bennett who all look like they should start. A few other maybe's too.

They look absolute dog on paper but I don't care. Most weeks Wan-Bissaka is scoring the same points as PVA. The extra 0.5-1 makes such a big difference.

    Aguero Tosun

If Chelsea bring in someone like Callejon will be interested. Hazard may be essential if he stays...then Salah may have to be replaced with Mane and Martial would get the chop...

Really want to double up Liverpool attack....

    Players on my watchlist:
    Auba, Firmino, Zaha, Kane, Lukaku
Mahrez, Hazard, Mane, Eriksen, Sanchez, Son, Mkhi, Doucoure, Walcott
    Mendy, Alonso

How many people are going to Wildcard early?

I suspect many will, myself included. I've decided to set up my team for GWK1 and go from there, rather than making 6-10 week plans based on fixtures & attacking and defensive potential.

Attacking gw1 doesn't necessarily mean early WC although it might 😆

It’s too valuable. No point starting with a team you plan to dismantle after just 3 weeks. There is a big swing of fixtures around gw10. I’d try and save it for then.

The teams with good starting fixtures drop to the bottom of the ticker.
Palace, southampton, burnley, Bournemouth and Everton

Likewise the teams with tough starts go to the top of the ticker
          Newcastle, west ham, Cardiff, Brighton

I see a lot of rmts with palace, Everton Bournemouth defence. They would be likely benefit switching to newcastle Brighton and cardiff

I'm planning to use mine for gw5 and use transfers to prepare for the fixture swing. I can't see any way around not using it with the team I have

Been tinkering a bit further. Thoughts?

    Ederson, Hamer
    Bailly, Robo, PVA, Coleman, Ward
Salah, Sane, Siggy, Townsend (punt!), Neves
    Aguero, Wood, Kamara (fodder)

I’m liking the value in attacking defenders. Not brave enough to go without Salah to start, but won’t hesitate taking him out if he doesn’t repeat it!

Have I gone too much in defence? Maybe worth downgrading PVA/Bailly/Coleman to get another premium attacker?

    Any thoughts Welcome!

Not sure really. Was he that good or whatever when they scouted him? Not even sure where he played. He may end up like that United keeper Lindegaard who swapped the United bench for the West Brom bench.

Last season Ramsey assisted vs City and vs United. Start with him the season or start with Martial then do the switcheroo? Keep in mind that I am already planning to get KDB when he returns instead of Mahrez.

    Liking the look of this:
    Fab, 4.0
    Robertson, Cedric, Tomkins, Jagielka, wan-bissaka
    Salah, d.silva, Richarlison, Jota, Ward
    Auba, Aguero, Arnautovic

Jagielka if starting and Richarlison at Everton seem like they could be great options

3-4-3 is making its way back into my lineup. In the end, wasn't convinced by Aguero, so did Kun+Sørloth->Zaha+Arnie and invested cash elsewhere

    Foster
    Mendy-Robertson-Bailly
    Salah-Mahrez-Richarlison-Jota
    Aubameyang-Zaha-Arnautovic

    Lössl-Kenedy-AWB-Cedric

Doesnt quite seem right to me tbh, but what do you think?

Zaha playing out wide so far in preseason? Staying away from him for now. Not a fan of Richarlison, think Siggy will offer more value. Not sold on Bailly yet either, dont know how Mou will line up in the back.

            Hennessey
            Wan-Bissaka Tomkins Sakho PvA
            Townsend Reidewald McArthur Schlupp
            Zaha Sorloth

This is what they played last night.

Unless they change formation, I don't see Zaha shifting wide as they would then have to play Benteke and Sorloth together which did not seem to work out last season. Also, Benteke is injured (Don't know how serious the injury is).

Pedro pick is a bad one I think. Zaha playing out wide recently so could be a gamble. Not convinced on Coleman due to Marco Silva being very attacking. Have to monitor Bailly. Better 4.5m options in midfield over Masuaku I think.

    Thoughts on this? 1.0m ITB.

    Ryan (Foster)
    Robbo Emerson Shaw (Cedric Wan-Bissaka)
    Salah Mahrez Siggy Jota (Ward)
    Aguero Arnie Wood

Emerson a gamble that I will monitor. Unsure on Shaw & Cedric. Torn between Mahrez, Sane, D. Silva.
