Best Newcastle United players to sign on FPL in 2018/19 – Complete Members’ Analysis

Amid the never-ending discord between supporter, manager and much-maligned owner, Newcastle United’s 2017/18 campaign was one that any newly promoted Championship club would be happy to emulate.

Having bounced back from their relegation in 2015/16 at the first attempt, the Magpies finished tenth in the Premier League last season and only fell into the drop zone on two occasions throughout the season – one of which was on the opening weekend.

United had the seventh-best defensive record in the top flight (conceding four fewer goals than Arsenal) and the likes of Jamaal Lascelles and Martin Dubravka offered excellent value in Fantasy Premier League, priced as they were at £4.5m.

Ayoze Perez, meanwhile, was one of the stand-out budget forwards in the second half of the season, scoring six goals in the final eight matches of the season.

Price hikes for Lascelles, Dubravka and Perez, a lack of investment from Mike Ashley, and awful fixtures in the first eight Gameweeks will likely deter many FPL bosses from purchasing any Newcastle assets initially. However, Benitez’s ability to make his squad greater than the sum of its parts means that a handful of their budget picks are worth considering once the fixtures ease up.

In-depth data on Newcastle’s season is available in the Members’ Area, while Fantasy Football Scout members can also read our detailed analysis of the key statistics in the article below.

Nailed when fit. Plays in an attacking role in a team who know who to attack. 3.5 PPM last season ain't bad, and you could get more if you only play in good fixtures. I remember him getting a goal and an assist against West Ham last year in a MotM performance. Maybe theat's the main appeal for me!

Cairney isn't as attacking. I don't know much about Ralls besides that he's on pens. If that's his main/only appeal, then if may be even harder to predict when he will score. Worse fixtures than Hughes too. I don't much about Costa, really. Is he nailed (or as nailed as Hughes)?

I've been having a look at Keita as a starter for my team and I must admit that he's becoming increasingly appealing. When he was in Germany with firstly Salzburg and then Leipzig he scored a goal in 26% of his matches played. So, although he will arguably be playing in a tougher league in the Premiership, he'll also be holding one of the more advanced roles in a central midfield three for Liverpool , who are one of the highest scoring teams in the league.

It's certainly likely that he'll return at least a conservative 6 - 8 goals in the season, which if you also assume will come with a good number of assists, a dozen or so clean sheets and probably some healthy BPS returns, starts to turn him into a very decent FPL option, who will be nailed as a starter for his team and is cheaper than a comparable central midfielder like Pogba.

Nice write-up, thanks Hippo. This may sound like a stupid question, but how vulnerable do you think he's be to rotation. Liverpool could be one of the teams with the highest level of rotation imo. I suppose Ox's injury helps his cause, though.

      1. The Mighty Hippo
        • 7 Years

They'll certainly have some rotation once the CL starts, I guess we have to work out who the more likely league starters will be from Keita, Hendo, Milner, Ox and Wijnaldum and Shaquiri....how hard can that be 🙂

He does look good. Possibly better value than Mane, but you can't look past Salah for a Pool Mid.

I've got Robbo, Salah and maybe Bobby, but he'd be my 4th choice Pool pick.

Massively inferior quality League as well! I do like Keita though and think he'll be decent value for his price but as others above have said it limits you to only 2 of Salah, Mane, Firmino, Robertson, VVD etc.

I am not an expert in any imagination, but he played in the Austrian league for Salzburg, and than switched to the new promoted side Leipzig in Germany. Before joining Liv.I am not so sure that he's anywhere near Mane & Co's standard?

Despite the security of points from KDB, he didn't turn out to be amazing value last year. I like your team, but I'd definitely use that KDB money on the bench. Otherwise downgrade Azpi to Coleman or VVD for the added 0.5-1.0

      1. WesMantooth
        • 13 Years
        5 years, 9 months ago

But will he be this year?
Him and Erik retaining their prices might make them more valuable than the other pricey options?

        1. Deulofail
          • 8 Years
          5 years, 9 months ago

          But the bench!

There's plenty of value to be found in non-pricey options, it seems, which makes KDB a luxury. I guess he's better when options are scarce.

In any case, the bench! 😆

          1. WesMantooth
            • 13 Years
            5 years, 9 months ago

As you can see below, I completely agree.
My response was solely relatert to your assesment of KDB, not his team.

Assuming Salah remains a stalwart in most teams, i can definately see the more reliable, trickling along all season-Kind of players, like KDB and Eriksen, become popular options.

            1. Deulofail
              • 8 Years
              5 years, 9 months ago

I think KDB would become popular as a "route into the City attack" based on "coverage"-thinking. The main appeal is the security of starts, which is one of the reasons he can be a reliable trickling along option. But it's also the reason his value isn't great, because you're essentiall paying a premium for appearance, which you can get for free with 4.0 defenders 😀

He was actaully in my first draft this season, though, and I only took him out due to the World Cup issue.

              1. WesMantooth
                • 13 Years
                5 years, 9 months ago

I would'nt want KDB based on "coverage" as I've come to think that such a thing doesnt exist. Guess my justification would be that although hes not very likely to offer tremendous value, his stability would offer good value longterm. I think theres an added value to those players who you actually dont have to bother with. Makes it simpler to focus your transfers.

Sane down to Mahrez to free up 0.5m

You can lose 0.5m from the keepers too. Either a Fab+4.5m rotation, or Pickford/Stek, Schmeichel+4.0 if he goes to Chelsea

Plough the 1m saving into a couple of better defenders

Afternoon everybody. Can anybody else not find Michy Batshuayi on FPL? I had thought with morata off to Milan and Giroud recovering from the World Cup final, Batshuayi stood to benefit as the striker in the sarri-ball 4-3-3 formation.plus its huddlesfield. Has FPL dropped the ball and dropped batshuayi out the game for some reason?

It's crazy! Regardless of whether he is DM or not the guy clearly has some serious talent.

Yeah Cairney is another one, the Wolves man just edges it for me as I think they will do better.

Comparing Neves vs Jota, ur going?

Would love Jota much more and been on him for such a long time, but realised I can have a Man City defender going with Neves so opting for him (for now).

I also think 6.5 is just a little too much to punt on a Championship promoted player.

Thanks, I am now considering Richarlison & Neves, instead of Jota & Cairney for the very same reason, just so hard to be confident in a 5 mil mid, not to mention there is no 4.5 option regularly playing.

Assumes Zaha stays and Richarlison goes to Everton but is team below

    A OK as is or

B Get Firmino for Zaha meaning also Douglas to Cedric, Jota to Costa and Hughes to Stephens/Ward

    Ederson Speroni
    Coleman Robertson PVA Douglas
    Wan-Bissaka
    Salah Mahrez Richarlison Jota Hughes
    Aguero Zaha King

If he stays or goes it will be before the close of the transfer deadline, so we know what the deal is before finally locking in our teams.

For me it's a choice of Aguero + Martial or Firmino + Mahrez. If this stuff continues into the final week before GW1, I'll go for the latter.

After some very helpful feedback from yous lot....here is where I'm at. Fabianski is good value and is there to stay....unless another bargain emerges at 4.5

    Fabianski
    Mendy / Robbo / Coleman / Shaw
    Salah / Sanchez / Sane / Neves
    Aguero / Tosun

    Speroni / Ward / Quaner / Maloney

I know it's a touch heavy on defence...but until I see where the value picks in midfield are, that's where my money goes.

Where does the Sanchez money go after the first few weeks?

Assuming Sanchez doesn't do that well.....I'd look at KDB or Hazard. In all likeliness Sane & Sanchez would become Pogba and KDB....which could allow me to upgrade Neves to Miki. It all depends information relative form....I'd be happy with this for a while

You think Fabiansky is a good set and forget option?
Like your defence a lot. Have doubts one Sanchez and Tosun in terms of nailedness,

He is a decent penalty saver, and should be playing in a more solid side than last year. His points/value ratio is very good. So it's more that he is value for money....than anything else

Thoughts on this beauty? As good as it gets without Salah?

    Ederson
    Robbertson | Bailly | Coleman | Douglas | Wan-Bissaka
    Martial | Sané | Mané | Richarlison | Ward
    Aubameyang | Firmino | Wood

    - After GW2: Martial and Sané >> Mkhitaryan and De Bruyne
    - Richarlison only if nailed in Marco Silva's team.
    - Still undecided between Sané vs. Mahrez and Auba vs. Aguero for the first fixtures

    Ederson Cairney Ward Obi-Wan-Bissaka

I think he is very much a fringe player so beware.

There are a plethora of very good 5.0 options, barely anything at 4.5.
