Dribble merchant Felipe Anderson offers assist and bonus potential

With Marko Arnautovic reclassified as a forward, Manuel Lanzini out long-term through injury and Michail Antonio supposedly surplus to requirements, Fantasy managers are now presented with new and mostly unfamiliar routes into West Ham United’s midfield.

Winger Andriy Yarmolenko (£7.0m) has already joined the Hammers from Borussia Dortmund and his eye-catching goal-scoring record with Dynamo Kyiv will have attracted plenty of interest from Fantasy Premier League bosses.

Jack Wilshere (£5.0m), meanwhile, now has to be considered as a viable budget pick, albeit not one who is likely to offer anything more than the occasional attacking return from the three-man central midfield that new manager Manuel Pellegrini seems likely to roll out.

Felipe Anderson (£7.0m) is the latest name to add to West Ham’s midfield mix. The Brazilian playmaker signed for the Hammers for a club-record fee – which could rise above £40m – last week and has penned a four-year contract with the east London side.

Available for the same price as Yarmalenko and indeed Arnautovic in FPL, Anderson had, at the time of writing, already worked his way into 4.3% of Fantasy squads despite not yet featuring for the Hammers in pre-season.

While Anderson’s goal-scoring record doesn’t make for great reading – the former Lazio player has only hit double figures for league goals once in his career and was on target on just four occasions in 2017/18 – the 25-year-old’s wider game is worthy of deeper scrutiny.

As well as recording seven assists for Lazio in Serie A last season, the Brazil international completed more successful dribbles per 90 minutes of action than any player in the Italian top flight.

That last statistic is particularly arresting, with successful take-ons rewarded on the Bonus Points System in FPL.

It should also be noted that Anderson’s involvement in those 11 Serie A goals last season came from just nine starts and 12 substitute appearances. Afforded more game time with the Hammers, the Brazilian midfielder has the undoubted potential to prove better value for money than some premium FPL midfielders in 2018/19.

The History

Born in Santa Maria in Brazil in 1993, Anderson was snapped up as a 14-year-old by Santos and progressed through the Brazilian giants’ youth set-up into the senior squad at the age of 17.

Featuring sporadically in the 2010 and 2011 campaigns (the Brazilian season running from spring to winter), Anderson was to become a permanent fixture in the Santos team alongside Neymar in 2012.

That breakthrough campaign saw Anderson score on six occasions and register seven assists in 35 Brazilian top-flight appearances, with West Ham’s record signing directly involved in seven goals in Santos’ final ten league matches.

The strong end to Anderson’s 2012 season attracted the attention of Lazio, who signed the Brazil under-20 prospect for €7.8m in June 2013.

His debut season in Serie A saw Anderson make fitful appearances for the Rome club, but the 2014/15 campaign was the Brazilian midfielder’s most productive season to date.

Despite making just 23 league starts and a further nine cameo appearances from the bench, Anderson scored on ten occasions and recorded eight assists as Lazio finished third – their highest position in eight seasons – and reached the final of the Coppa Italia. Only Franco Vazquez of Palermo attempted more dribbles than Anderson during that season.

Seven goals and five assists followed the next season as Anderson once again struggled to nail down a regular starting spot (14 of his 35 appearances were as a substitute), but the 2016/17 campaign saw the Brazilian midfielder finally become a permanent fixture in the Lazio side.

Anderson started more than 30 league matches for the first and only time in his professional career, with just three of his 34 league appearances coming as a substitute. Four goals and a career-best 11 assists were complemented by 75 key passes (only four Serie A players made more) and a division-high 117 successful dribbles.

A muscle tear ruled Anderson out of the first four months of the 2017/18 season and the Brazilian was to make only nine starts in his final campaign with Lazio. Anderson left Rome with 25 goals and 33 assists to his name from 137 appearances, 44 of which came as a substitute.

The Prospects

West Ham’s start to 2018/19 is a fairly daunting one, with five of last season’s top six sides to play in the first nine Gameweeks.

The Hammers’ home fixtures against Bournemouth – who had the fourth-worst defensive record in the Premier League last season – and newly promoted Wolverhampton Wanderers in the first four Gameweeks are enticing matches from a Fantasy perspective, however.

Marko Arnautovic is already proving a popular pick in FPL and is the fifth-most owned forward in the game, sitting in just under 24% of Fantasy squads and bang in form with three goals to his name in pre-season (at the time of writing).

Whether Fantasy managers would be willing to “double-up” on Hammers’ assets during their tricky run of fixtures from now till late-October is doubtful, but Anderson represents an interesting alternative for those who are unwilling to swallow Arnautovic’s positional reclassification.

Arnautovic, Yarmolenko and Anderson – A 2017/18 Comparison

Arnautovic312811732.76656
Yarmolenko18133533.63716
Anderson2194744.33077

While Anderson evidently doesn’t pose as much goal threat as Arnautovic or Yarmolenko, the statistics reflect just how much more creative the Brazilian international is.

A chance creation rate of one every 30 minutes beats that of all West Ham regulars last season and ranks not far behind the Premier League high-mark set by Cesc Fabregas and Mesut Ozil, who created a chance once every 26 minutes on average in 2017/18.

Having regularly taken corners and free-kicks during his time in Italy, Anderson looks likely to feature prominently at set-piece situations, too.

Anderson ranked eighth for take-ons completed in Serie A last season, despite only seeing 1,151 minutes of action. Needless to say, his successful dribbles-per-90 minutes played rate of 6.02 was the best in the Italian top tier. Only Eden Hazard could beat that figure among Premier League midfielders, meanwhile.

That the FPL Bonus Points System rewards both key passes and successful dribbles bodes well for Anderson’s bonus point potential.

We are, of course, yet to see the Brazilian midfielder in action in a West Ham shirt. It will be intriguing to see where Pellegrini stations Anderson in his starting XI, given that he and Yarmolenko have both featured prominently on the right wing throughout their careers. Anderson played the 2016/17 campaign almost entirely on the right flank, while Yarmolenko has for a long time now been an “inverted winger” in the Arjen Robben mould.

The fact that the Ukrainian wide-man is predominantly left-footed means that Yarmolenko could be farmed out to the left flank, with Anderson taking up position on the opposite wing in the 4-3-3 system that Pellegrini has rolled out in pre-season. Yarmolenko’s low rate of successful take-ons in the above table, however, is illustrative of how the Ukraine international prefers to cut inside from a wing position, rather than beat the full-back.

Another option would be to tweak the system to a 4-2-3-1, sacrificing one of the deeper holding midfielders to allow Anderson to occupy the “number 10” role – as he frequently has done – and Yarmolenko to remain on the right flank.

With friendlies against Aston Villa, Ipswich Town, Mainz and Angers still to come, we should have sufficient data to assess Anderson’s starting position, match fitness and worth before the Hammers’ Gameweek 1 match against Liverpool on August 12th.

Got to have him from start imo..
If for some reason he doesn’t perform then he’s an easy downgrade, however if he gets off to a flyer and you don’t own him then you’re starting off on the back foot...

By having him you're not going to go on the front foot either. If 50% people own salah and around 30% captain him.. You'll only be guaranteed the top 30%, isn't it?
Whereas if you own someone who is owned less than 5% and scores and salah fails you're easily in the top 5%.

Ownership works both ways. That's why I never consider ownership while picking players.

I just think that he’s a must have.
I lost a lot of points last season by not getting on him early enough.
I get what you’re saying but other options aren’t yet ready to go after their World Cup exploits.

It’s not that you’ll be off on the front foot, it’s that you won’t be on the back foot... the captaincy is more important than any other position (200% points vs any other position)

So if there’s one part of your team you don’t want to gamble with it’s the captaincy imo. Some risk prone folks may argue the opposite, but you have 10 other slots to get differentials in to get on the front foot against your rivals... if you get the captaincy wrong you screwed.

Right, but you’re not winning anything in the first week. He’s the most obvious captaincy target for the first few weeks, and his track record in a fairly settled squad has been stellar. Compared to players changing clubs and managers and systems, only City players look like they have the same kind of attacking potential and stability from last season to this one (the argument against United being the absence of their WC players). Even if Salah suffers a 25% reduction from his performances last season, he’s still averaging 6+ points per game. For me, ownership is much less important than his genuine on-field ability.

I couldn’t handle The Sunday game for Kun. Waiting all weekend for the team sheets hoping Pep doesn’t do a Pep... then wincing as every tackle goes in on him waiting for the injury... then waiting for him to score at least twice... then hoping Pep doesn’t take him off on 55 mins...

I find owning Kun too stressful. Much prefer nice comfortable Ederson/Sané/Silva & captain Salah away to Palace the following night!

A bit reckless to go into GW1 without him imo. Why take the gamble? Why not start with him & sell him after GW1 if he blanks?

It’s literally a gamble to bank on him not scoring v West Ham, I just don’t want to gamble my season away on day 1!

But as has been said many many times, if you have a gut to go without, definitely follow it.

You could get him in if you change your mind, not starting with him isn't committing to never having him.

Your season isn't gone if he does well in GW1.

I think he's a good option just not worth 13m imo.

Of course your season won’t literally be “gone”. But the likely scenario is that you will have given Salah captain teams a 20-30 point headstart and an extra free transfer, you’re really not doing your season any favours in that scenario.

Again, my opinion only, not a fact! And Salah could well get 2 points GW1, and the alternative captain you pick could get 16 in which case you will probably be towards the overall top ranks.

But in terms of likelihood, it’s MUCH more likely the opposite happens. Hence I would prefer to start with Salah rather than vice versa.

Maybe, but most game-weeks Salah's probable score will be greater than your alternative captain's probable score.

I think those who go without Salah should commit to it at least for a few weeks rather than folding after his first good performance, it's not as if he's going to go long the whole season without a haul.

I think its much closer to 50/50 than you do, the money spread out across multiple upgrades helps this I think.

It absolutely could... but as I said, it’s more about probability. Much more probable that Salah captain outscores any other captain, and the damage gets multiplied by his ownership. On the flip side the rewards would be large for anyone who goes without, and manages to pick a captain who outscores Salah... but the odds would be stacked heavily against them.

That’s why I plan to start with Salah, observe & be ready to react if he does show signs of a loss of form. If Kun or Auba or any other captain hattricks, the damage is way more limited than if Salah does, Salah’s ownership would destroy your rank if you didn’t manage to hit a captain who got close to his score.

Why do you think the odds are heavily in favour of Salah outscoring other captain options?

If you have multiple captain options you can pick the one with the best form and fixture, whereas Salah owners will likely captain Salah every week.

There’s no other forward at the minute who I would captain with as much confidence as Salah. Especially for GW1 - He has all the same factors going for him this year, the best fixture in GW1, OOP etc.

If he was away to city, home to Utd, away to Chelsea etc for the first three weeks, there would be something to think about (I would probably still get him though to be honest)

Will see how many keep him GW 5-8, could lose a lot of value over those weeks.

I think he’s viable as a perma captain. Even if he only scores 80% of the points he got last year, that’s still a 500 points season for the captaincy, very difficult to get that from trying to pick & choose captains imo. The things that put me off the three you’ve mentioned - Kun is always a selection doubt with Pep, despite what anyone says, he is also extremely injury prone. Sanchez was absolutely terrible last season, has a horribly defensive manager, looked like he was carrying weight & out of shape vs. His prime, and is coming 30 in a couple of months, would hate to think he has peaked & is on the way down. Auba looked very good last year, but with Emery coming in he has uncertainty over him & Laca, he should do well but the uncertainty is there. Salah doesn’t have those issues

It's not as simple as captain vs captain, the money spread amongst other players should also be considered.

Yeah Sanchez is a punt but I think he will start up front for the first match. Aguero is a risk yeah, but it will likely be for GW2 only before I get Auba in a cap him most weeks.

There’s only one position that allows you to double points scored though, which is why Salah is such a popular pick. In an 11 vs. 11 scenario he may not be worth as much, but where you get to double a single player’s points each week it tips the scales dramatically in Salah’s favour

Strictly speaking, downgrading Salah to another premium midfielder only requires one move, whereas upgrading one to him requires two (unless you have at least 2.0 in the bank, but that undermines the argument for spreading the funds he requires). So, at least in terms of a one-for-one transfer, I disagree.

Agreed, the other big advantage of starting with Salah is you have the flexibility to get rid of him for any other midfielder (if needs be)

If you start without him you have to either leave enough ITB to upgrade one of your mids, or take a transfer hit/4 points, which just compounds the difficulty you’d have in the (likely, but not guaranteed) scenario that he does well in GW1 vs. the premium players you choose to go with instead of him.

Realistically though if you own Salah and he starts first two gameweeks with 2 pointers, at what point do you make the decision to get rid? GW3 or several weeks later?

It’s a bridge we’d have to cross... I’d say the odds of this scenario cropping up are quite long though. There are different types of 2 pointers too, he could hit the woodwork 7 times, have a penalty saved, many world class GK performances etc... or he could just play turgid shite... if it was the latter it would probably be wise to get rid.

Last season (or perhaps the season before that, I forget), I seem to remember Aguero took about 6-7 weeks before scoring (he was touted as 'essential' in pre-season).
Season before that, Mahrez never came near to scoring the points he had the previous season, and again had been touted as being essential in the run up.

Yep I had Aguero during that spell, see my comment above. It’s why I don’t view the Huddersfield game with as much enthusiasm as many folks on here. I think I’ll just captain Salah that week & start the season with 2x City mids instead of Kun

Yeah in the case where you only do one transfer it is easier, but it also would result in money being left over, which most people would then put back into the team with a second transfer anyway.

What about the risk that Salah doesn't perform and alternatives do. There is no way to eliminate risk entirely.

You’re already hedged against that risk by having Salah - the majority of the game will have him, so you won’t lose as much ground.

He must be close to 50% ownership already, I’d imagine he’ll be well over that by GW1... the rank hit you would take would be astronomical were he to score well if your captain doesn’t match/exceed him. Not impossible to pick a captain to outscore him, but the odds would not be in favour of it

Absolutely... and the last thing you should do is deviate from your gut instinct. If you feel starting with no Salah is the way to go definitely go for it, you could literally be in the top 100 if it goes right for you as i said above!

No way to avoid the risk: agreed. Given what we have to go on—that Salah has the best attacking returns in the league last season, that his team was amongst the most attacking in the league, and that neither his manager nor a large portion of his key supporting players have changed—leads me to think the greater risk is not having him. No other player comes close to matching those known factors, even if they are no guarantee of future success. I think the lack of consensus regarding an alternative captain for week 1 emphasizes this point.

Fair enough, good reasons for having him.

I have a feeling that once cheaper alternatives are clear that a lot of players will jump ship on Salah, he is just so expensive.

Totally plausible. I’m not committed season-long. If I were drafting, I would probably take 3 or 4 strikers ahead of him. But for FPL, the conservatism seems a much more successful strategy, especially at the start of the season. Thanks for the fun conversation!

People seem to forget that if Salah scores well, you still have to compare that to what the money saved bought you. It's not all or nothing.

I'm not weighing in on the debate, but I think it's useful to remember that a no-Salah team can outscore a Salah team, even when Salah performs well. Many seem to think this is an impossibility.

      1. TheDonald
        • 5 Years

Exactly this. People really seem to be missing the bigger picture here.

At £13m, Salah is way more expensive than last season, and while it was suicidal to go without him last year, I can see the argument for it this season - you could do so much more with that extra money to the rest of your team.‬

Salah could deliver, you could be Salahless, but have a much more rounded squad and still do well. With a stronger all-round squad you could even do better than those with a Salah (c) 15x2 pointer.

Let’s say instead of Salah, you have Mane and an extra £3.5m. That money could be used as single upgrade to your weakest starter (eg. Deulofeu to Mahrez. Mane + Mahrez (c) could arguably outscore Deulofeu + Salah over time).

Or you could use the money to completely revamp your defence to give you on average an extra couple of clean sheets a week.

I don’t think going without Salah is absurd as people think. Even if Salah has similar output to last season, I expect a fair few Salah never-owning squads to be right up there.

That said, I’m almost definitely starting the season with Salah.

I want to go Salah-less, but all the other premium mids I want have been on heavy World Cup duty. Have him at the moment and might be looking to redistribute my funds with my first wildcard.

I think there are two pertinent arguments here. Firstly, he is by a mile the most consistent and generally best captaincy option for the first part of the season, barring a sudden and drastic downturn in his form.

Secondly, even if you ignore the captaincy aspect and focus only on value (relative to his new price), he is still a great pick. In particular, if you look at value added per million, he is streets ahead of all other mids and forwards, and significantly better than all but a couple of defenders.

      Patricio
      Alonso - Robertson - Bailly - PVA
      Mane(V) - Eriksen - Mahrez - Martial(C)
      Aguero - Tosun
      Bench: Ward (Lei) - Kenedy - Sorloth - Wan-Bissaka

I'll start with him. Not out of "fear" but more from a logical stance imo.

LFC is a top team with great fix the first couple of gwks. The other top teams either have a) worse fixtures B) new management C) attacking players added to the fold/ likely leaving/ danger of rotation D) players on vacation wont start the first gwks.

Squad budgets gotta go somewhere. I'm certain theres a crop of players offering value in the 5.0-7.5 bracket, but currently i'm unconvinced of having several such assets in my XI, as the standout option tend to emerge after a while. Thats why i feel theres more certainty in holding some of the higherpriced assets. However, per my opinion, outta the player priced 8.0 or higher, only Eriksen, mane, Salah, Firmino, Auba and Aguero looks worth investing in atm. With Aguero looking to soon become a rotation risk, Auba worse fix and new manager, and the three others offering a way lower expected pts pr game than Salah, he looks like the standout captaincyoption.

I clearly dont rate Sane, Mahrez, Martial, Sanchez and other popular picks as highly as some others do. My team will likely consist of Salah and 3 outta mane, Erik, Firmino, Auba, aguero if the FPL landscape dont change much Over the next couple of weeks.

I personally dont believe your gambling if you start without Salah because you see places in your team that you could improve your squad with the money "saved". The game won't be Won or lost based on Salah alone, its that slot and 14 others that will.

I started my drafts off without him this season but as the days went by it becoming clear it was far, far too big a risk so early

I sincerely hope he doesn't match last season as it will become very boring, very quickly

but from the start he is a must... more so given the quality in the cut rate 7m second striker bracket this year

I think that if Liverpool's fixtures were difficult to begin with there might be more argument to go without him. Given that they have good fixtures and most of us seem to want two/three of their players I believe going without him as captain to begin the season is reckless and I'm certainly not risking it.

On the last page I asked people to order 5 teams in order of goals conceded in the league last year.
No one got it correct and some guesses were very inaccurate - as mine would have been before checking.
With all the detailed player stats around I think it's easy to forget about something as simple as how leaky or tight a defence can be.
Not ground breaking stuff and easy to find but it's here if you want it
    https://www.premierleague.com/stats/top/clubs/goals_conceded?se=79

It's historic data I know but take a look through and consider how bad Leicester, Everton and West Ham are at defending,
Newcastle and Brighton are pretty good at it - and Burnley are exceptional for a team outside the 'top 6'.
With other factors even it's much better to captain someone playing Leicester than Brighton. or Arsenal than Burnley.

2016-17 best 3 defences outside of the big 6: Everton, Southampton and West Brom

Well this is dis-proving my trend theory pretty convincingly isn't it.
I expect Man City to follow their trend of scoring quite a few more than they concede 🙂

Next step could be an analysis of 15/16, 16/17 to 17/18 to see if many trends crossed over seasons.
Whilst teams and styles of play do change a little, if the manager remains I would expect a similar style of play so Leicester will concede more than I would have first thought and Brighton will concede less.

Yes, I remember it killing Stoke a good few years back. I'd tripled up on their defence for 3 years running prior to that.
Conceding only one more goal than Chelsea in a season is pretty exceptional though, they could still offer good value.

What do you guys think of this team?? Tempting to go King -> Zaha but I'm thinking of keeping the cash so I have a little flexibility to start the season.

    GK: Ederson (Speroni)
DEF: Bailly, Coleman, Cedric (Daniels, Wan-Bissaka)
MID: Salah, Mane, D. Silva, Jota (Cairney)
    FWD: Aguero, King, Austin

Yep, I'll be watching Austin closely. If he doesn't look like starting I'll find a way to get Zaha in for him. Just think if Austin plays he'll score. I think Zaha will score slightly more than King, but I'm not sure if he's worth the extra allay.

    Already have Salah+Mahrez

    A) Sane + Mane

    B) Sanchez + Ozil/Martial

    C) some other

Have some gut felling Ozil will be good at 8.5

How’s this looking for GW1? A couple of risky players in there but hopefully enough backup on the bench in case..

    Foster
    Robertson - Shaw - Schlupp
    Salah - Sanchez - Mahrez - Costa
    Auba - King - Tosun

    Fabianski - Cairney - Cedric - Wann-Bis

Feeling happier with this team - but still keen to for community feedback/slating please...

Bench is a bit weak but some should at least play.

Other than that - Tomkins vs Cedric??

    Ederson
    Coleman - Bailly - Robbo - Tomkins
    Mahrez - Salah - Jota - Mhiki
    Firmino - Aguero

    Boruc - Kamara - Stephens - Peltier

Cedric for me - could be played in advanced role

RMT please.... don’t be too harsh.

    Salah Mahrez Mkhi Richarlison
    Kane Arnie Wood

    Boruc Cedric Wan-Bissaka D.Ward

Kane may be knackered after w/c and not necessarily guaranteed to start the season.

Mkhi has a horrible first 2 fixtures, perhaps pick someone else with easier first 2 games and bring him in for gw3 if he's looking lively.

    Hi all, please RMT.

I have stuck with this team for a while but I am not sure whether I need to strengthen midfield or add a third forward like Tosun.

    Pickford - Fabianski
    Azpilicueta - Robertson - Keane - Tomkins - Peltier
    Salah - Sane - Jota - Cairney - Stephens
    Firmino - Aubameyang - Niasse

    Thanks in advance.

What position is lacazette expected to play? Barely see him in any teams and surprised by that.

If you have 0.5 mil in the bank:

    A) auba / firmino / mahrez Most popular
    B) Aguero / Lacazette / mane

Chelsea plays in the Community Shield August 5th and in the International Champions Cup at Stanford Bridge August 7th followed by their EPL game at Huddersfield on the 11th.

Order of importance of games would you say?

    1. Huddersfield
    2. Community Shield
    3. Int. Champ Cup

Community Shield should see most of the EPL first week starters possibly with a mix of one to three others? Int Champ Cup then would see mostly non-regular starters?

Just wondering which one is most likely going to expose to us the EPL starting lineup or at least we can gather who most of the starters will then be.

Also the last possible day to transfer a new player for an EPL team is August 9th I believe.

It might not be that simple. The ICC game might be important for late returning WC players to get some time on the pitch. I think all the question marks surrounding Chelsea encourage a wait-and-see approach.

    Thoughts on this lot?

    Fabianski 4.0

    Shaw, Daniels, Clyne, 4.0, 4.0

    Salah, Mahrez, Silva, Lamela 4.5

    Kun, Firminho, Wood

I see the biggest upside with City and Pool attackers

For those considering Alisson as set and forget GK alongside a 4.0? Do you really want to use what will likely be an extremely important Liverpool spot on a GK? Alisson maybe a great GK but you're likely gonna want that 3rd spot available outfield i reckon, especially if you are intending to own Salah/Firm? It's one of Robbo/VVD surely as Pool defensive cover with their attacking threat as a big bonus for 0.5 more? Be interested to hear thoughts?

      • 12 Years

Yeah I think he's a wasted spot with defenders that offer so much.

I always avoid premium GKs, apart from the occasional DGW.

I dont think double Pool defence is out of the question, can't underestimate how much value can be found in a solid defence, particularly those defenders with the potential for attacking returns, I'm toying with the idea of starting with Robbo and VVD.
