Best Southampton players to sign on FPL in 2018/19 – Complete Members’ Analysis

After four successive top-half finishes, each achieved as their best players (and the occasional manager) were picked off by “bigger” clubs, Southampton diced with death in 2017/18.

A run of one win in 21 fixtures between late-November and the end of April left the Saints in the relegation zone with just four matches to spare, before Mark Hughes steered the club to Premier League safety with victories over Bournemouth and Swansea City.

Hughes’ appointment in March not only sparked an upturn in form but also led to a change of system, with the Welshman ditching Mauricio Pellegrino’s 4-2-3-1 in favour of a 3-4-2-1 – the repercussions of which for Fantasy managers we will discuss later.

Southampton assets weren’t a reliable source of points for Fantasy Premier League bosses last season: of the current squad, only Ryan Bertrand broke the 100-point barrier.

Charlie Austin‘s campaign was, once again, hampered by injury, while frequent rotation in the centre-back positions (not one centre-half made more than 30 starts) meant that the likes of Maya Yoshida and Jack Stephens proved to be undependable budget defensive picks.

Not that the Saints’ defence was an attractive proposition anyway – only Bournemouth and Stoke City kept fewer clean sheets in the Premier League than Southampton (eight) last season.

That Austin, who made only ten starts and 14 substitute appearances, finished as the Saints’ leading league goal-scorer on seven goals said a lot about Southampton’s struggles in the opposition box, too.

The south coast club’s decent-looking opening run of fixtures this season – Burnley (h), Everton (a), Leicester City (h), Crystal Palace (a), Brighton and Hove Albion (h) – are inviting from a Fantasy perspective, but the Saints’ woes last season are evidently still at the forefront of many FPL managers’ minds; Cedric Soares is the only Southampton player who currently has a double-digit ownership.

In-depth data on Southampton’s season is available in the Members’ Area, while Fantasy Football Scout members can also read our detailed analysis of the key statistics in the article below.

Thoughts guys? I really like the look and flexibility of 4-4-2.

    De Gea

    Robertson - Coleman - Mendy - Tomkins

    Salah (c) - Martial - Richarlison - Mahrez

    Aubameyang (vc) - Arnautovic

Bench: Button - Kolasinac - Ward - Kamara

Like it mostly! I’ve also gone 4 at the back, but 433 just because I had 3 forwards I wanted but could change to 442 easily if one doesn’t go well.

Martial and Kolasinac are potential dangers for game time. Richarlison could be great value, but also may take some time to settle in

Yeah I can punt with Martial and hop on a bandwagon 6.5 when the WC players come back. Worth it for a Man U starting striker!

It’s a wait and see for Kola if he starts I can straight swap for Tomkins after their first 2 fixtures

Very similar structure to mine. Still can’t decide whether Mendy and Patricio is better than Ederson and PVA. What do you think? 0.5 difference in total cost not an issue for me.

    Fabianski/Patricio
Mendy Shaw Van Dijk Pereira AWB
    Salah Sanchez Richarlison Jota Chalobah
    Arnie Aguero Austin

Well gents, rejigged my team a little bit: Swapped out Siggy + Coleman + Patricio to Richarlison + Mendy + Pickford.
Was set on Siggy by a mile over Walcott but the mill saved on Richarlison seems sensible to start with?

Not really mate, its just Richarlison under Silva is exciting and as much as I.like Siggy, cant fully justify the 1.0 more!
Was always debating whether to go Patricio or Ederson.for City defensive cover but a punt on Mendy appeals.
Pickford and Stek set and forget mightned be a bad plan.
I pick my own players and dont follow the herd so keep the smart comments to yourself 😉

Finally getting closer to a settled team, mostly a template (which I call the collective intelligence):

    Patricio
    Robertson | Mendy | Bailly
    Salah | Mahrez | Keita | Richarlison
    Agüero | Zaha | Wood

Bench: Steele | Cèdric | Stephens | AWB
    Bank: 0.5m

Who are the transfers waiting to happen as the season starts?
How many of you think Azpilicueta will score more than Zaha in the first 10 weeks?

What do you expect of Keita?

Dunno how defensively sound Sarri is, but Azp is FPL royalty. Definitely expect him to outscore Zaha.

With Keita, I am taking a chance. Also, a bit biased decision, because I see a lot of Bundesliga (I stay in Germany). He is a box-to-box midfielder, like Yaya Toure if you remember. Not like Matic or Kante. So, I expect goals and assists, especially with the personnel around him. At 7.5, if he can repeat his feats at Leipzig, he is good value-for-money.

If he doesn't perform, I can switch to other players at this price point.

The only change I am tempted to do at the moment is
Zaha (+ AWB on bench) --> Azpilicueta (+ Quaner on bench)

Like it. Pretty similar to me except I have Auba over Zaha and Richarlison and couple defenders are cheaper.

One area I've been looking into a lot is the perma-4.5-keeper. Despite the fixtures, really think Fab is the best option just about.

Also not sure on Bailly v Shaw. It's easy to slip into the mindset that Bailly is more likely to be nailed, but I think it's a tough one to second guess, and in these situations always like to go with the cheaper option

      1. banskt
        • 10 Years

I also had Auba initially and cheaper defenders. Then I convinced myself that I will get more points this way, especially since I am not captaining either Agüero or Aubameyang. I will alternate between the two, also have 0.5m in the bank to account for small peice shifts.

I think Patricio will outscore Fabianski over the season because of 3/4 penalty saves, and a few more clean sheets. Pellegrini is not so tight at the back.

So, do you think Shaw is going to play for United? How long do you see him as a regular starter?

Bailly is another player I am considering changing. Third year Mourinho has been historically poor 4/5 times, if I remember correctly. I will probably go Baines / Coleman / Bellerin / Monreal.

I think your team is right. A Man City clean sheet is not guaranteed against Arsenal and playing in a back 4 Mendy is not guaranteed attacking returns. With a 4.0 keeper you have to play Ederson. However, not sure about 2 City defensive options. It might limit who you want in attack later.

    Aubameyang, Arnautovic (Quaner)

It's a punt, but compare his output under Silva to afterwards. Something like 105 v 23 points.

Burnt out after a 14 month season too.

Sure, his finishing is shite, but there is potential there. Easy to hop on, or hop off at that price regardless so it won't matter much

still young and a little bit raw, expect big things from him this season. The 6.5 looks good value with EVEs fix and as much as I want to punt on Siggy, I feel Rich looks the better option now.

People picking Azpi - he'll be in the mix for BAPs as usual, but wouldn't expect the same level of attacking returns as we're used to. Sarri doesn't push the fullbacks up too much, and isn't a fan of crossing the ball in.

(Cue another 5 assists to Morata's head)

Tinkering with a draft to include Salah. Would appreciate any comments...

    Pickford / Speroni
    Coleman/Schlupp/Mendy/Robertson/Bennett
    Salah/Sané/Mikhi/Cairney/6.0 mid
    Aguero/Zaha/King

Also, what are thoughts on best 6.0 mid out there. Currently have Barkley just as a punt but am also thinking Fabinho possibly.

    Cheers

People are worried about rotation at ManCity attack/midfield. How about Liverpool?

Salah - Firmino - Mane. Then there is Shaqiri, Sturridge, Solanke, Keita, Lallana, Ings.

Some of them (Keita & Lallana) should play deeper in midfield but then there is also Henderson, Fabinho, Wijnaldum, Milner.

Might be the case. Firmino not in tour in US so he might not be included in first GW's but this is not exactly normal rotation issue. We'll see.
