Great Expectations

Mkhitaryan’s all-round game and discount price could make him essential

Henrikh Mkhitaryan’s all-round game may just make him a near-essential figure in Fantasy Premier League squads this season.

The Armenian’s potential both for goals and assists should make his cost of £7.0m well worth paying, especially in a season where many of the more familiar names in midfield and attack are more expensive.

With just 180 FPL points across two campaigns in English football, now is the time to expect a personal-best total score from Mkhitaryan.

CREATIVITY

There is no doubting that Mkhitaryan’s forte is the ability to provide assists for his team-mates, and his underlying numbers from 2017/18 suggest he’ll be one of Arsenal’s chief creators this term. Even in the first 10 Gameweeks of last season, while he was still a regular starter at Manchester United, only three midfielders created more chances than his 23. Just two of those recorded more than his five assists, Kevin De Bruyne (£10.0m) and David Silva (£8.5m), both with six assists in one more appearance than the Armenian. Upon moving to Arsenal in January, only Mesut Özil (£8.5m) created more chances than Mkhitaryan among Arsenal assets, but the Armenian still provided more assists than his German colleague (four to three).

Where Mkhitaryan really stood out across the season was when it came to minutes per big chance, the most crucial statistic given his game-time was limited to just 20 starts. His 11 big chances created in 1,727 minutes of football averaged out at one every 157 minutes. That was actually better than De Bruyne, who topped the charts both for big chances created (19) and FPL assists (20), but could still only fashion a big chance every 162.3 minutes, compared to Mkhitaryan.

GOALS ON THE SIDE

On top of his creativity, Mkhitaryan also offers a much better goal threat than any of the other midfield options at Arsenal. Of the Gunners assets, only striker Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang (£11.0m) had more shots on goal between Gameweeks 25 and 38, the Gabonese international also the only one of Mkhitaryan’s team-mates to best him for efforts in the box and accuracy too. We recently discovered that Özil had the potential to be Arsenal’s key creator this season, but Mkhitaryan’s ability to combine his similar assist potential with better goal-threat than the German gives him a huge edge as far as FPL is concerned, with a saving of £1.5m.

HOME COMFORTS

Mkhitaryan should benefit from being deployed on the right flank of attacking midfield for an entire campaign in 2018/19, where he is most comfortable. Part of the reason that he struggled to fit in at Manchester United was because he was used in a central number 10 role, but since moving to Arsenal he has switched back out to the right flank. It was in this position that he was so successful back in his Borussia Dortmund days. He has already reaped some of the benefits of a return to the flanks, with Granit Xhaka (£5.5m) the only Arsenal player to attempt more crosses between Gameweek 25 and 38 – and that was a result of the Swiss international’s set-piece responsibilities.

AU-BRO-MEYANG

A full season alongside his former Dortmund colleague Aubameyang will only bring out the best in Mkhitaryan. In the final campaign that the pair were together in Germany (2015/16) at Dortmund they combined for 59 goals and 31 assists between them, their relationship clearly a strong one. That partnership has already been rekindled in part in the latter half of 2017/18. Of the four assists Mkhitaryan supplied since joining Arsenal, half of them were for Aubameyang, who set up one of the Armenian’s two goals in Arsenal colours.

GOOD START

Aside from facing Manchester City and Chelsea in the first two Gameweeks, Arsenal have very appealing fixtures in the early months of 2018/19 which should give Mkhitaryan a clear run at building up confidence. From Gameweek 3 to 10 the Gunners don’t face a single member of last season’s top six. But we shouldn’t necessarily be avoiding Mkhitaryan in Gameweeks 1 and 2. Manchester City are still without their key players as they rest after the World Cup and may name a second-string side at the Emirates on August 12, creating an opportunity for some attacking returns for Arsenal. Meanwhile, Chelsea could take time to adapt to new manager Maurizio Sarri.

Could easily go with a trio of Torreira-Xhaka-Ramsey against tougher opponents, which would leave three spaces for the main four attackers.

I was wondering this too. I'm not sure you can have Auba, Laca, Mkhi AND Ozil in the same starting XI. If you're working off the assumption that Auba-Laca is still going to be a 'thing' and you've got Ozil wanting to prove the haters wrong post-WC, then you'd assume that Mkhi starts from the bench. More pre-season games will give us a better idea, though...

Mkhi Auba is also a thing.

But yes, I agree, it's a lottery that perhaps even pre season will not solve. I just hope he goes for an attacking line up vs City for his first ever home game, if he tries to d a mourinho it won't go down well.....

Was about to say the same. Essential means that your team will not be able to compete without them. Essential is Salah last season, one of Mahrez or Vardy in their title winning season etc.

Mkhi may prove to be good value but there is no way he becomes good enough that we can't afford to go on without him.

They've edited the title to say "could make him essential". Initially it didn't have the "could".

Still disagree. I don't think there's any way that Mkhi ends up being essential. There's a chance of course but it's highly unlikely.

I don't see it happening but I acknowledge that there's a tiny chance. I mightn't have phrased it well enough in the OP.

For example, I don't see how West Ham could win the league but I'm aware there's a tiny chance, it's not completely impossible but it is highly unlikely.

    Cech
    Bellerin - Sokratis - Mustafi - Kolasinac/Monreal
    Xhaka - Ramsey
    Mkhitayran - Ozil - Auba
    Lacazette

How I envisage Arsenal lining up GW1. Eventually Xhaka makes way for Torriera.

      Eventually? What's stopping him initially?

Note rumours of Chambers ahead of Mustafi. We may know more of this after a few pre-season games and could be nonsense.

Also Leno over Cech likely, and a potential 4-3-3 possible with Torreira holding and Ozil + Ramsey on either side, rather than Ozil at 10 with Torreira and Ramsey behind.

      Pre season will help us.

Good thing is Mkhi and Laca look like fantastic value and probably starting

Torriera is still on hols I believe and new to the squad. But I stand to be corrected.
Not looking forward to watching another season with Mustafi in defence, but not sure Chambers would be much better if I am honest.

I think 4-3-3 would be a tragic waste of the players at his disposal, personally, but let's wait and see.

    Got a few questions.

    1. What's the Chelsea keeper situation currently looking like? Looking online I see that Courtois to Real may happen soon. Is Schmeichel still looking a likely replacement?

    2. With Schurrle likely to join Fulham, this will probably drop Kamara out of the first team. Does this make a 2 up top formation less viable, and if so, which 3rd striker would you get for 7m or less? I'm not totally convinced atm by any of the 7m options, but can't afford 3 premiums. Kamara at 4.5 seemed too good to be true to fill the final spot.

Is it? Most of the rumours, insights and predicted lineups I've seen suggest Laca up top with Auba and Mkhi to the side, and Ozil behind.

It’s the combination of potential for goals and assists that formed my argument, as well as an advanced position at a club with a good run of fixtures. Yes there may be some midfielders who outperform him this season (as the article stays, I think Özil could be one of them) but it’s that price which colours the argument for me. I think a lot of people are catching onto the fact too, hence why he’s got around 20% ownership right now and is the third most popular midfielder. But I can see why the word ‘essential’ can be misleading - will take care not to use it again in the future!

Trumps people will quickly change it to a "not essential" lol. We all know he's not great, he's at best a wait and see.

    1)Aguero, Ramsey

    or

    2) Aubameyang, Jota?

Strange options. Aguero over Auba for me from the off just about. Tricky on the midfield choice, Jota could be gold, but I'd probably start with Keita

    Bernado Silva being overlooked?

Bernardo: "With the Confederations Cup last summer I missed some of pre-season so they asked me if I could come a little bit earlier and I said of course. I talked with all the staff and we thought it would be good if I was here earlier to get well and start the season well..."

Sounds like they want him to start the season... Not sure where he'll play though as I'd expect Mahrez is better in the position he played in for city last season...

I dont understand what hes talking about to be honest. What has last season pre-season got to do with this season? What does he mean "get well and start the season well"? Has he had an injury? Why is he different from all the other players that means he needs to come earlier?

Could Zappacosta be an interesting option? If Chelsea don't buy another right back, he should be the preferred RB in a 4-3-3? At 5 mil. Clearly a wait and see though.

Possible if Azpi plays at CB. Unlikely imo

If Rugani arrives, which seems very likely, Azpi is nailed at RB.

Bear in mind Sarri doesn't rotate much, and Rugani played every single minute under him back in 2014/15 at Empoli.

Regarding Man City's lineup next season, I have spotted this formation (or close to it) on a couple of sites:

    https://cdn.images.express.co.uk/img/dynamic/67/590x/secondary/City-line-up-1429052.jpg

I imagine Sterling will fill in for B.Silva and KDB for Gundogan when they return.

Any City fans think this could be a possibility? Makes owning Mahrez exciting.

Too bad for Mendy owners however.

Yep, more than possible. Maybe with Kompany and/or Stones.

Mendy would get gametime up on the LW sometimes

That team would concede too many. Don't think it's realistic on a week to week basis.

Don't think he spent all that money on Walker, Mendy and Danilo to not bother playing full backs/wing backs.

That looks absolutely ridiculous. They'd concede goals for fun with a lineup like that.

I don't get why people think Guardiola is going to change formation. City just broke records with the 4-1-4-1/4-3-3 and people think he's just going to dismantle the whole system? Why?

refreshes things, stops complacency, prevents getting 'found out' etc. not many teams win back-to-back titles so a formation change could help in theory

I don't really expect that though, would expect either Mendy or Walker to be on one of the wings if he did that
