Great Expectations

Mkhitaryan’s all-round game and discount price could make him essential

Henrikh Mkhitaryan’s all-round game may just make him a near-essential figure in Fantasy Premier League squads this season.

The Armenian’s potential both for goals and assists should make his cost of £7.0m well worth paying, especially in a season where many of the more familiar names in midfield and attack are more expensive.

With just 180 FPL points across two campaigns in English football, now is the time to expect a personal-best total score from Mkhitaryan.

CREATIVITY

There is no doubting that Mkhitaryan’s forte is the ability to provide assists for his team-mates, and his underlying numbers from 2017/18 suggest he’ll be one of Arsenal’s chief creators this term. Even in the first 10 Gameweeks of last season, while he was still a regular starter at Manchester United, only three midfielders created more chances than his 23. Just two of those recorded more than his five assists, Kevin De Bruyne (£10.0m) and David Silva (£8.5m), both with six assists in one more appearance than the Armenian. Upon moving to Arsenal in January, only Mesut Özil (£8.5m) created more chances than Mkhitaryan among Arsenal assets, but the Armenian still provided more assists than his German colleague (four to three).

Where Mkhitaryan really stood out across the season was when it came to minutes per big chance, the most crucial statistic given his game-time was limited to just 20 starts. His 11 big chances created in 1,727 minutes of football averaged out at one every 157 minutes. That was actually better than De Bruyne, who topped the charts both for big chances created (19) and FPL assists (20), but could still only fashion a big chance every 162.3 minutes, compared to Mkhitaryan.

GOALS ON THE SIDE

On top of his creativity, Mkhitaryan also offers a much better goal threat than any of the other midfield options at Arsenal. Of the Gunners assets, only striker Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang (£11.0m) had more shots on goal between Gameweeks 25 and 38, the Gabonese international also the only one of Mkhitaryan’s team-mates to best him for efforts in the box and accuracy too. We recently discovered that Özil had the potential to be Arsenal’s key creator this season, but Mkhitaryan’s ability to combine his similar assist potential with better goal-threat than the German gives him a huge edge as far as FPL is concerned, with a saving of £1.5m.

HOME COMFORTS

Mkhitaryan should benefit from being deployed on the right flank of attacking midfield for an entire campaign in 2018/19, where he is most comfortable. Part of the reason that he struggled to fit in at Manchester United was because he was used in a central number 10 role, but since moving to Arsenal he has switched back out to the right flank. It was in this position that he was so successful back in his Borussia Dortmund days. He has already reaped some of the benefits of a return to the flanks, with Granit Xhaka (£5.5m) the only Arsenal player to attempt more crosses between Gameweek 25 and 38 – and that was a result of the Swiss international’s set-piece responsibilities.

AU-BRO-MEYANG

A full season alongside his former Dortmund colleague Aubameyang will only bring out the best in Mkhitaryan. In the final campaign that the pair were together in Germany (2015/16) at Dortmund they combined for 59 goals and 31 assists between them, their relationship clearly a strong one. That partnership has already been rekindled in part in the latter half of 2017/18. Of the four assists Mkhitaryan supplied since joining Arsenal, half of them were for Aubameyang, who set up one of the Armenian’s two goals in Arsenal colours.

GOOD START

Aside from facing Manchester City and Chelsea in the first two Gameweeks, Arsenal have very appealing fixtures in the early months of 2018/19 which should give Mkhitaryan a clear run at building up confidence. From Gameweek 3 to 10 the Gunners don’t face a single member of last season’s top six. But we shouldn’t necessarily be avoiding Mkhitaryan in Gameweeks 1 and 2. Manchester City are still without their key players as they rest after the World Cup and may name a second-string side at the Emirates on August 12, creating an opportunity for some attacking returns for Arsenal. Meanwhile, Chelsea could take time to adapt to new manager Maurizio Sarri.

    RMT guys.

    Ederson (Speroni)
Mendy - Robertson - Coleman (Wan Bissaka - Bennett)
Salah - Mahrez - Jota - Richarlison (Deulofeu)
    Auba - Zaha - King

I like the fact that I have two city defenders. They have a great fixture and they’ll for sure keep a clean sheet most of the games.

Midfield with a rotation on Rich Jota and Deulofeu, including a rotation with King and sometimes Zaha. Bench one/two of them every gameweek.

    Give me your thoughts! 🙂

Similar to my team...I am not a fan of King though, would try to upgrade to Tosun there. I have Chalobah at min price who can be explosive if he gets the playing time now that Rich is gone.

That’s the problem. I believe Deulofeu will get much more playtime. Is Chalobah even near starting XI?
And I’m not sure if I should double up on Everton attack? But maybe downgrade Coleman to Keane?

If anyone is wondering what kind of player Jahanbakhsh is, I will give a small profile...

He is a classic winger, right footed on the right wing. But that doesn't mean he can't score a goal. He is a technical dribbler with a decent cross and an outstanding shot. Even as a classic winger he scored 21 goals, which points out he is excellent in positioning, always available for the tap-in. With 12 assists he is always looking for the striker. He made Weghorst (striker AZ) a goalscorer, he earned a transfer to Wolfsburg. Most assists where from trough balls, he has the vision. Most goals where long shots.

For 24 million he must be a starter and I believe he is a good option for the FPL. I rate him above Izquierdo because Janhanbakhsh is a winger who can finish and provide. I hope he is 6.0. But I think he will be 6.5.

Even if you half those numbers (transition to PL, they're pretty good for a 6m odd midfielder.

Tadic had similar numbers coming out of Twente with 16 goals 14 assists so its really tough to determine what his output would be in the PL, it all depends on his price. He is one worth monitoring but always be wary of those coming from Eredivisie

to play Auba, Aguero and Salah, you will probably have to look at 4-4-2. Just my thoughts.

for example, Mendy, Robertson, Coleman, Bailly, Salah, Salah, 7.5, 6.5, 6.5, Aguero, Aubameyang. Or, something similar in that line.

are there any 7.5s better than mikhi tho? maybe ramsay/ martial? and then turning a 6.5 mill mid in to austin allows me to get silva. what your saying spreads the value. but for me a 8.5, 7.0, 6.5 mid and a 6.0 forward is a better way to spend the cash.

What do people think of Sturridge for the start? I'm going to have Firmino but not confident of him starting the season. Ok, it's a transfer waiting to happen but think he's building a good link with Keita and might be a good place holder for Bobby for a couple of games.

If it looks like firmino won't play gw1 as late back from world cup - does that make him a complete no go zone?

Or is it worth including him in starting 11, relying on a sub and having firmino nicely in squad for gw2 on??

Man City vs. Liverpool. Never heard of these teams, so there's that.

Latest draft, how are we looking?

    Ederson
    Mendy, Robertson, Shaw, Cook
    Salah, Richarlison, Martial
    Zaha, Firmino, Aguero

    Subs: Hamer, Cairney, Tomkins, Stephens.

Tomkins and Cook will be rotating. Thanks

Hi all, first time post for me. Comments on team appreciated:

    Pickford (Fab)
    Douglas, Mendy, Tomkins (Wan-B, Peltier)
    Ericksen, Salah, Jorginho, Neves (Odai)
    Aub, Aguero, Zaha

Want to bring in Firmino in quickly as think he will miss 1st/2nd week and alternate between Zaha and Arnout

    Be brutal but honest., Cheers

I watched a lot of Napoli, where Jorginho played last, and I think he’s unlikely to be involved in many goals or assists

Yep, watched youtube of him and plays deep. If swap Aub or Aguero for Firmino will bring in Mkhitaryan for him

Bit too much spent on GKs...9m should be the max unless you're going premium

      Wolves are flogging Douglas to Leeds so I hear...so he's a no-go

Defence is a bit too weak in general (2x 4.0m won't end well)...feed 0.5 from GKs into an extra 4.5m

      Other than that, OK

    Ederson
    Lovren, Bailly, 4.0 (4.0, 4.0)
    Richarlison, Salah, Mane, Sane, Jota
    Zaha, Auba (4.5)

0.5itb for either Mane / Sane > KDB.

Think this could work with the 4.0 rotation at the back? Would only need 1 of 3 to play.

Defence a mess.....3 x 4.0 at this stage of the season is a bad idea, you need to know who is playing......Lovren and Bailly will be rotated....and frontline to weak........

Peltier and Wan-Bissaka are already good 4.0 alternatives. So you just need a third who is potential as starter. Without the last one, 'tis a bit risky, imo.

        Also, swap Zaha for Tosun.

Thoughts on this side? assuming that city will beat Arsenal at home gw1...

    Foster
    Mendy, Robertson, Shaw
    Salah, sane, Keita, Richarlison, Pedro
    Aguero, Arnie.

    Fab, Cedric, kamara, wan-bas

    Few punts, Keita/Richarlison/Pedro
and shaw need further monitoring of course. tripling up on city/pool will hopefully be a positive.

It might have the opposite effect.

For e.g. the guy that works in a pie factory watching pies go past on a conveyor belt 8hrs a day probably doesn't go home and think "what do I fancy for tea....PIE!"

Entirely serious. I worked a full day there today for free. I have to decide in the next hour or so so they have time to get a contract ready for tomorrow. The main thing I would get out of it is something for the CV. Especially good if I suddenly wanted to become a test engineer

    Thoughts on this flexible squadron:

    Foster/Fabianski

    Shaw/Mendy/Bellerin/Robbo/WanBissaka

    Maddison/Richarlison/Mahrez/Salah/Masuaku

    Arnie/Zaha/Aguero

    Begovic / Fabianski
    Davies / Bellerin / Shaw / Cedric / Tomkins
    Salah / Sigurdsson / Kenedy / Mikhitaryian / Brady
    Aubamegang / Firmino / Tosun

    Shaw or Alexander-Arnold
    Brady or Cavaleiro
    Tuson or Arnie
    Anyone to anyone else

    I think it's a go-er - no pre-planned transfers, transfers will be dictated by form and injuries, 442 / 343 / 352 all do-able

The only way Cardiff finish anywhere other than 20th this season is if their defence plays lights out... so maybe one very cheap one. Even that's a risk.

      Frankly, they're dog.
