Sánchez stars up front for United as Spurs picture continues to build

Manchester United manager Jose Mourinho has revealed more information about what his back-four could look like in Gameweek 1 after Antonio Valencia was sent home from the US tour.

However, there were more positive developments further up the pitch as both Alexis Sanchez and Juan Mata furthered their cases for inclusion in squads.

Elsewhere we learned more about who could line-up in defence for Spurs, with Ben Davies and Kyle Walker-Peters at the centre of the dicussion from a Fantasy perspective.

Another Scout Notes article looks at what some more pre-season goals, assists and line-ups mean for our Fantasy Premier League teams.

AC MILAN 1-1 MANCHESTER UNITED (8-9 PENS)

  • Goals: Alexis Sánchez (£10.5m)
  • Assists: Juan Mata (£6.5m)

Jose Mourinho revealed further problems in the right-back area for Manchester United after their latest pre-season friendly. Matteo Darmian (£5.0m) started there against AC Milan with Antonio Valencia (£6.5m) having left the tour in the USA with a torn calf muscle and the Manchester Evening News reporting the newly-announced club captain could miss the first month of the campaign. We discussed the alternatives to Valencia earlier this week, but Mourinho has gone on record himself with his thoughts about the situation, name-checking the still absent Ashley Young (£6.0m) in the process.

“Antonio Valencia is injured and he will be injured for the beginning of the Premier League, Diogo Dalot is also in a recovering phase and he will not be ready for beginning of Premier League. Ashley Young is a possibility to play right-back, but is on holiday. I don’t know if he fancies to be back for that and put himself to be available for the team or stay on holiday. Victor Lindelof is a possibility, he is not a right-back but is a possibility, he starts training next Monday. I will send people to Manchester to train with Victor, it makes no sense for him to come to the United States. So if Matteo leaves he leaves because the right offer arrives and if he stays, he can be important for us.”

The United manager also revealed a little more about what the future holds for Darmian, who could prove a cheap route into the United defence early on if he stays at the club. With current ownership of 0.1 percent, a U-turn in his transfer situation could make him an excellent differential.

“Matteo wants to leave and I think when a player wants to leave, if the right offer arrives you have to try to be human and let the player follow his instinct but not at any price. And, until now, the offers we got for Matteo are not even close to being accepted.”

Mourinho actually experimented with a 3-5-2 formation for this match, but despite the change in system, still named Eric Bailly (£5.5m) and Chris Smalling (£6.0m) in the back-three. With Phil Jones (£5.5m) still absent, Marcos Rojo (£5.0m) linked with a move away and Victor Lindelof (£5.0m) another late returner, the pair look increasingly like the most assured way to invest in United’s defence, alongside David de Gea (£6.0m), who is reportedly on his way to join the squad with Fred (£6.0m). The goalkeeper is still infinitely more popular though, his ownership of 30.1 percent considerably higher than Bailly’s 5.5 and Smalling’s 4.8.

Further up the field, there may be increased interest if Alexis Sánchez (£10.5m) gets a chance to follow up what was an impressive goal-scoring display as a centre-forward against AC Milan. The Chilean always looked more dangerous in that position rather than deployed on the left-flank of a front three although we’ll have to wait and see whether he played up front as a result of Anthony Martial’s (£7.5m) departure from the squad to be present for the birth of his second child or if there was some design from Mourinho behind the move. Either way, the United boss will have taken notice from Sánchez’s hugely energetic man-of-the-match performance which featured good skill for his goal and could have even featured an audacious goal direct from a corner, his effort landing on the roof of the net.

Just behind Sánchez in the front two was Juan Mata (£6.5m) who has serious potential to be an early season differential too. This was the second time in three matches that Mata started the game in the forward line, and once again he was involved in the goal-scoring. It was him who assisted Sánchez’s first-half strike, and the former Chelsea man took free-kicks as well. With just one percent ownership and some assurances from Mourinho that he will be in team sheet for Gameweek 1, there is a real opportunity for Fantasy managers with Mata.

Luke Shaw (£5.0m) also continued to make effective attacking runs down the left-flank and had a chance to score a deserved goal, denied by an excellent save from former Liverpool goalkeeper Pepe Reina. The Spaniard also denied Mata a second pre-season goal after Sánchez had played him in.

Juventus’ goal came very soon after United’s opener, Leonardo Bonucci playing a long ball over the top for Suso to beat Lee Grant (not in FPL).

Finally, Mourinho hinted that Nemanja Matic (£5.0m) may also have an injury, although the extent is not known, other than the fact that he trained on his own on Tuesday.

“The important thing for me is with the group of players we have – and losing already Valencia and Matic – even worse to play against Milan’s best team and to play the way we did and get the result that could be even better than it was. I think was good.”

MANCHESTER UNITED XI (3-5-2): Grant (J Pereira 45’); Tuanzebe, Smalling, Bailly; Shaw (Fosu-Mensah 74’), McTominay, A Pereira, Herrera, Darmian; Sánchez, Mata (Hamilton 89’).

AS ROMA 1-4 TOTTENHAM HOTSPUR

  • Goals: Fernando Llorente x2 (£6.0m), Lucas Moura x2 (£7.0m)
  • Assists: Luke Amos, Moura, Serge Aurier x2 (£6.0m)

Lucas Moura (£7.0m) furthered his case for inclusion in Fantasy squads by involving himself in three of Spurs’ goals scored against Roma on Wednesday night. After starring in a 6-0 training ground win over Southend, this time he delivered on a slightly bigger stage, assisting one of Fernando Llorente’s (£6.0m) two goals and finding the net twice himself. With Dele Alli (£9.0m) coming back to training late and Son Heung-min (£8.5m) off to the Asian Games in August with South Korea there are vacancies in the Spurs attacking midfield and another fantastic display from Moura bodes well for him, amid potential competition with Erik Lamela (£6.5m).

The most popular Spurs midfielder is back already, though. That’s Christian Eriksen (£9.5m) who went straight into the side on Wednesday after a slightly delayed return to training following a World Cup campaign with Denmark. He was not involved in any of the goals directly but did hit the post in the match. Either way, the fact Eriksen is getting minutes under his belt now is an encouraging sign for the 16.7 percent of managers who have been convinced by his FPL pedigree to include him in their squads for 2018/19.

There was an interesting development in defence as left-back Ben Davies (£6.0m) was deployed as a centre-half, an option that we had perhaps overlooked as an alternative in this position. We’ve known for some time that Spurs’ first-choice centre-backs will not be having the best preparation for 2018/19 and were all at risk of not being involved in the early Gameweeks. Both Jan Vertonghen (£6.0m) and potential want-away Toby Alderweireld (£6.0m), are not yet back in training after Belgium made it to the final weekend of the World Cup while Davinson Sanchez (£6.0m) still made it back late, although is with the squad now.

Davies’ role in the middle allowed Kyle Walker-Peters (£4.5m) to get another run-out at left-back and, by all accounts, put on a good performance. Obviously it’s early days in pre-season for Spurs, but the defensive situation is one worth tracking as there could be two important developments for Fantasy managers if these roles continue for the players in question. If Davies continues to be used in the middle than his attacking potential as a marauding full-back will be largely diminished until Vertonghen and Alderweireld return, although it would unlock a potential bargain if Walker-Peters is given game-time on the left. In fact, he even spent the last 15 minutes as a left-winger.

Fernando Llorente (£6.0m) added his third and fourth pre-season goals in three matches against Roma but Fantasy managers shouldn’t get too sucked into considering him just yet. Yes, if the Spaniard were to start a few matches, continuing his summer form at the start of 2018/19, he could offer incredible value and is reportedly in really good shape, but there are still doubts over whether Mauricio Pochettino is that keen on the former Swansea man. As we all know, Harry Kane (£12.5m) has always said he is aiming for a Gameweek 1 return, so more information is needed on his front before anyone can commit to Llorente. Furthermore, this is the rather guarded response Pochettino gave the press post-match when asked about whether the striker would feature in his plans for the coming season.

“I’m not going to talk about individual situations because if I’m going to talk now about someone I need to speak about everyone. I am focusing on trying to work hard, trying to provide the team and every single player with the best tools to improve.”

Before the match, the Tottenham team-sheet handed to members of the press indicated that Victor Wanyama is injured, although there is no detail on this development at present.

TOTTENHAM HOTSPUR XI (4-2-3-1): Vorm (Gazzaniga 60’); Walker-Peters (Georgiou 85’), Davies, Carter-Vickers, Aurier; Amos (Marsh 85’), Sissoko; Moura (Nkoudou 85’), Eriksen (Skipp 60’), Lamela (Sanchez 79’); Llorente (Son 60’).

Can buying Firmino AND Mané really cover Salah, or will that 19.0m investment fall flat...the bitter truth 🙂

Having posted a simple number study in the build up to GW31 looking at the viability of captaining Firmino or Mané ahead of Salah for the blank game week (see link below), I wondered if a similar comparison could be made taking Firmino and Mané’s ‘better ball’ score (apologies for the golfing lingo 😯 ).

What I mean by that, is what if we could ‘predict’ the best possible captaincy selection between Firmino and Mané each week, and put the best man for the job up against Mo!
Obviously a healthy portion of Captain Hindsight is required, but bear with me 🙂

    https://www.fantasyfootballscout.co.uk/2018/03/16/the-community-round-up-237/?hc_page=1#hc_comment_17820084

Applying the same logic as before, I have re-contested the first 30 gameweeks from last season to see how they fared. Below are listed the gameweeks where at least one of the trio made attacking returns:

    GW1 Salah 11 v 12 Firmino (Firmino +1)
    GW2 Salah 1 v 8 Mané (Mané +7)
    GW3 Salah 11 v 12 Firmino (Firmino +1)
    GW4
    GW5 Salah 10 v 2 Firmino (Salah +8)
    GW6 Salah 7 v 2 Firmino (Salah +5)
    GW7
    GW8
    GW9 Salah 7 v 2 Firmino (Salah +5)
    GW10 Salah 4 v 8 Firmino (Firmino +4)
    GW11 Salah 15 v 10 Mané (Salah +5)
    GW12 Salah 16 v 5 Firmino (Salah +11)
    GW13 Salah 7 v 1 Mané (Salah +6)
    GW14 Salah 13 v 13 Mané
    GW15 Salah 5 v 13 Firmino (Firmino +8)
    GW16 Salah 11 v 2 Firmino (Salah +9)
    GW17
    GW18 Salah 8 v 12 Firmino (Firmino +4)
    GW19 Salah 10 v 11 Firmino (Firmino +1)
    GW20 Salah 9 v 13 Firmino (Firmino +4)
    GW21 Salah 14 v 6 Mané (Salah +8)
    GW22
    GW23 Salah 11 v 8 Firmino (Salah +3)
    GW24
    GW25 Salah 8 v 8 Firmino
    GW26 Salah 15 v 3 Firmino (Salah +12)
    GW27 Salah 13 v 12 Firmino (Salah +1)
    GW28 Salah 10 v 8 Firmino (Salah +2)
    GW29 Salah 8 v 8 Mané
    GW30 Salah 2 v 7 Mané (Mané +5)

In 30 gameweeks, at least one of the trio returned attacking points in 24 matches (3 of which resulted in a ‘draw’). 6 matches resulted in all three blanking.

Salah has outscored both Firmino and Mané on 12 occasions.
Firmino outscored Salah on 7 occasions.
Mané outscored Salah on 2 occasions.

The margin of victory for each ‘win’ was:

    Salah - 12, 11, 9, 8, 8, 6, 5, 5, 5, 3, 2, 1 (average 6.25pts gained on 12 occasions)
    Firmino - 8, 4, 4, 4, 1, 1, 1 (average 3.3pts gained on 7 occasions)
    Mané - 7, 5 (average 6.0pts gained on 2 occasions)
(Obviously these margins are doubled for captaincy if you don’t own the player)

So, Salah is almost twice as likely (12/24) to outscore Firmino (7/24), and six times more likely to outscore Mané (2/24) in games where any of the Liverpool front line make attacking returns.

There are many ways to justify your selection of attacking Liverpool assets. They’ve been endlessly listed. I will be firmly in the Salah and Robertson camp, an investment of 19.0m, equal to that of Firmino+Mané.
I’m not owning Salah out of fear or compliance.
I’m owning him for the simple joy of FPL points! 😀

Alli...wow, that would be quite a fall from last season's heights! Since his injury return he's featured just three times, and scored on each occasion (inc a pen). Until there's a sign of him stopping, I'm in!

Really good points.. and I think it was clear that Salah was the right play last season... But this was esp because of how close the options were in price. With salah now 3.5m more than mane... I'm not sure if the calculation changes.

Salah is priced as a super premium player this year.. I can trade him and a mid price players (e.g. Richarlison) for 2 premium players (e.g. hazard and Eriksen). So what I'm thinking about in terms or captaincy is whether having the flexibility to choose between the two premium players as captain would outscore having the ability to captain salah every week.

I haven't decided yet, but if I go without Salah, I'd definitely have firmino so I also have a decent Liverpool captain option. I'm staying away from mane whether I have Salah or not just because I don't see him as consistent enough to be a captain, and hence don't think he's worth his price

I'm Firmino is a pretty poor captaincy option compared to Salah. Red arrows galore on that tact. Auba, Kun, Kane and co more viable IMO

I'm picking Firmino, Mane and Robertson from the off as 'cover' for Salah. At this stage I want the extra funds. If it's going pear shaped then I'll make the move to Salah. Hopefully he shouldn't rise too much as half the game already owns him

        9.5 + 9.5 + 6 = 25M

So your spending 25M, just to cover 13m. Why not just spend 13m and have a great captaincy option?

Salah (captain nearly every week), arnautovic and a 5M def (shaw for example) will easily outscore those three.

Feels like a false economy to me. Even with Salah I have Kun Eriksen and Mahrez, and a squad structure with reasonable bench. Extra funds from ignoring Mané \ Firmino get you juicy city assets!

"What I mean by that, is what if we could ‘predict’ the best possible captaincy selection between Firmino and Mané each week, and put the best man for the job up against Mo!"

Who can predict the best possible captaincy?

Of course you can't predict the best player out of Firmino or Mané...the whole point is that 'even if you could' last season (GW1-30) you'd have been considerably worse off. Sorry if this hasn't been made obvious enough...my reference to Captain Hindsight was supposed to be a clue 🙂

This comparison is practically useless, but anything based on the myth called "cover" is, so I'm not surprised.

Firstly, as Fedolefan said, no one can predict the best possible captain between Mane and Firmino each week, so why even assume that?

Secondly, you're comparing Salah vs Firmino + Mane like everyone will fall in one of the categories. There are plenty of Salah owners that also have Mane or also have Firmino, including me.

      It's basically Salah + 14 players (87m) vs 15 players without Salah (100m). That's it. There's no cover.

"I will be firmly in the Salah and Robertson camp, an investment of 19.0m, equal to that of Firmino+Mané."

      - Because those that have Firmino + Mane can't also have Robertson or Salah? Why compare two sets of players from different positions?

        1. Of course you can't predict the best player out of Firmino or Mané...the whole point is that 'even if you could' last season (GW1-30) you'd have been considerably worse off.

        2. Your welcome to spent 22.5m of your budget on Salah + 1 of Firmino or Mané. I can guarantee you won't get close to replicating the returns of the combo in 'value' terms from last season....but that isn't really the point in my original post, just a little tangent. I did say there were plenty ways for assessing the options being discussed, I haven't attempted to create a conclusive all encompassing argument, just add a little to the debate regarding whether going without Salah and using F&M as cover/captaincy cover is viable.

        3. I think you need to take the post at face value. I noted Salah + Robertson was equal cost to Firmino + Mane because Firmino + Mane v Salah was the subject of the study 🙄 🙂

"Your welcome to spent 22.5m of your budget on Salah + 1 of Firmino or Mané. I can guarantee you won't get close to replicating the returns of the combo in 'value' terms from last season"

          - Yes, evidently you won't. How can you when Salah's price has been increased by 4m? All that matters is whether you believe Salah individually is worth 13m this season (he was a steal last season) including captaincy, and whether you think Mane or Firmino individually are worth 9.5m each without captaincy (they weren't captained last season either and were generally considered value). So basically, the double up's value will depend only on Salah's new value. Mane's price hasn't been increased and Firmino's price last season rose up close to 9.5 and people were still buying him.

"I did say there were plenty ways for assessing the options being discussed, I haven't attempted to create a conclusive all encompassing argument, just add a little to the debate regarding whether going without Salah and using F&M as cover/captaincy cover is viable."

          - Yes, I know that, I'm just not sure what it adds. As I said, that cover argument is immediately void when you realize that a lot of people own Salah + M or Salah + F. And I doubt anyone planning to go M + F and no Salah is planning to really captain them. They'll have better captains. Which further weakens the cover argument because it's Salah (often captained) vs M + F (rarely if ever captained)

Feel free to jump on any of the above. I am personally harnessed to Ben Davies.

Won't be going anywhere near Willian (or any other player linked with a move out...remember transfer OUT window continues beyond the start of the season, just transfers IN that close Thursday night before season starts!)

Willian - most likely off to Barca but could be good
      Morata - lol
Laca - not nailed and was poor for the most part last season
Keita - could be good but takes up a valuable Pool spot
Davies - great pick but Spurs play 5 of their first 7 away

I’m not buying into this Everton hype, think they are just going to struggle.

Silva was a complete flop at Watford when he left and so was Richarlison.
In terms of defence, Big Sam couldn’t even get clean sheets out of them so I’m not sure how Silva is going to.

Just smells like a trap IMO.

You guys aren't worried about Sane not starting a single PL match when Mendy was fit?

Pep said himself that Mendy gives him width that Delph could not give and that's why Sane was so essential for City's game last season - because Mendy was injured.

Now with fit Mendy, there is no need for Sane and his wing positioning, he needs to go near the middle, and as he is left-footed, it's hard for him and don't think it suits him. He played as right winger only once last season and with Sterling, Mahrez and Bernardo fighting for that spot, it's hard to believe that his position will be changed.

And changing formation to 352 makes it even worse for him. I think Mahrez and Sterling could be the most nailed City wingers this season.

Yes, but Sterling played frequently as left winger last season and is more suitable to cut inside with his right foot and fast plays than Sane is.

Sterling is much better on the right over left.
Sterling off the World Cup is hardly a buy atm whereas Sane and Mahrez are fresh.

Yes, but Mahrez will now be perfect for right wing and Sterling is most suitable for right wing position with Mendy back.

Mendy will take a part in our last pre-season game. He will start with training tomorrow.

I don't know if Pep is ready to give those who were on WC minutes from the start, maybe he is. Not like they will need 3-4 weeks to be rested and ready for starts.

    3. Parm
      • 12 Years
      5 years, 8 months ago

The thing with Pep though is his teams are never about formations but having the correct balance(5 attackers and 5 defenders) and spacing(players occupying different lateral and vertical lines on the pitch).
Player roles are always different on a game-by-game basis, last season we saw Delph/Walker operating as false full-backs and the next game they were high and wide, Pep loves to vary it depending on opponents and the rest of his team's shape. It is a balancing act on the wings but with Mendy more adept to playing wide on the left it is an adapt or die situation for Sané. He still has a role in certain matchups and he could easily make the transition to the right with Walker operating inside but for now he is the type of impact sub Pep has liked in the past(Douglas Costa & Kingsley Coman) and that was his role before the Mendy injury. I think he returns back to that role to start the season but we will see.

    Fabianski (Speroni)

    Mendy, Coleman, Tomkins (Peltier, Bednarek)
    Salah, Sanchez, Mkhi, Jorginho (Stephens)
    Auba, Firmino, Zaha

Thinking arsenal beat city first up but having no city at all is a worry. Considering 3 x 4.0 defenders, mendy to alonso, tomkins to wan-bissaka but not great i know. How does everyone rate jorginho's potential output?

    Ederson (Speroni)
    Robbo - Shaw - Coleman ( AWB - Hoedt)
    Salah - Sane - Keita - Richatlison - Jota
    Aguero - Wood (Quaner)

    0.5m ITB

Have kept 0.5m to upgrade richarlison or Jota to mkhi in wk3

Depending on what happens at arsenal may swap aguero to auba at the same time

Have gone for Wood over Arnie due to Burnley being in the EL so would expect Burnley to be on other for day 1. I'm also waiting to see what happens with Pellegrini and West Ham.

I'm gambling a bit on Keita as I watched him a bit in the bundesliga and I think he's going to tear up the premier league.

Jota has decent stats and is oop and richarlison did well for me last year when I had him at the start of the year

    Any thoughts/suggestions?

The obvious ones aside — we'd all love if Salah or Kane where cheaper —, which players would be just perfect for your team... if only they cost 0.5 or 1.0 less?

Brighton's Jahanbakhsh and Groß for me. I think they can score lots of points, but I'm not keen on paying 7.0 for Brighton mids.

I think Pep's only real dilemma will be balancing out the wings with Danilo/Mahrez both preferring to come inside and Sané/Mendy the opposite. He could swap Sané and Mahrez with Mendy providing enough width to allow Mahrez to play very central(like in the previous pre-season game) and Danilo/Sané the opposite.

He played LW in the game he would have scored a hat-trick if he didn't give Laca his 2nd penalty.

The thing with Auba is that he's a winger like Salah is a winger. He technically played on the wing but scored a tap-in goal receiving a cross (a cross that may even have come from Laca). He will drift inside, make great runs, interchange with the rest of the front 3, and threaten in the box constantly, regardless of nominal position.

Call me crazy but I think Mahrez might end up playing in David Silva' role fairly frequently this season and we saw Pep grooming him into that role last night against Liverpool. Makes him less of a rotation option given that he offers Pep that option as well as the pure 'right wing' version.

Decent. I'm not too keen on King or Cedric though.

    Ederson
    Janmaat, Otamendi, Cedric
Pedro, Salah, De Bruyne, Mane, Richarlison
    Lacazette, Zaha

    4.0 - WanB, Peltier, Quaner.

Little bit different but quite spicy. Janmaat just an early punt placeholder for either TAA / Lovren. And will probably go with Sane instead of De Bruyne for the first couple weeks.
