Best Watford players to sign on FPL in 2018/19 – Complete Members’ Analysis

With just over a week to go until the 2018/19 season begins, Watford players aren’t proving to be popular purchases in the Fantasy Premier League community.

The Hornets are one of only two clubs – the other being newly promoted Cardiff City – who don’t have a single player with an FPL ownership of 5% or more.

This isn’t a huge shock, looking at last season’s figures: the Hertfordshire club had the third-worst defensive record in the top flight and only one of their players – central midfielder Abdoulaye Doucoure (£6.0m) – scored more than five league goals. Richarlison, meanwhile, departed for Everton last week.

Javi Gracia’s side are third-favourites for relegation with some bookmakers and their form from Gameweek 14 onwards last season – the Hornets won more matches (six) before this point than they did in their remaining 25 games (five) – was that of a team fighting the drop.

Watford’s opening three fixtures this season are enticing, however: home matches against Brighton and Hove Albion and Crystal Palace sandwich the Hornets’ trip to Burnley, who could be in UEFA Europa League action either side of that encounter.

Encouraging underlying defensive statistics, the pre-season form of Andre Gray (£6.0m) and a tactical system that encourages their full-backs to attack are worthy of note, too – all of which we will expand on in the article below.

In-depth data on Watford’s season is available in the Members’ Area, while Fantasy Football Scout members can also read our detailed analysis of the key statistics in the article below.

Sanchez in a team like City or Arsenal is very different to Sanchez in a Mourinho team.

But starting up top the first few GWs before Lukaku is back should count for something, no?

Potentially it's alright, but he'll be back defending for most of the games. Mourinho already going on about having no players ready for the first GW = setting up for cagey 1-0s.

Did you see how well Man U attackers did last season after about November?

Every player at that price point or ~11 mill is better in my opinion.

Why is a 4.5M Schlupp playing at left midfield preaseason got no hype when a 5.5M left back PVA does? Bottomed.

I think Auba will edge it but not enough to justify the extra 1.5m. My guess:

      Laca - 16-20 goals
      Auba - 20-24 goals

Laca managed 14 last season even though he was getting subbed off at 70 mins every game and injured for a good chunk

He will easily achieve those numbers

Since 2013/14, the few budget players who performed well in the EPL with less than 1000 minutes of experience were Dimitri Payet and Pascal Gross. They also had experience in top European leagues.

Is there anyone who started scoring in the EPL directly coming from the Championship? I can't seem to remember any.. All of them, even Mahrez / Vardy required one full season to get the EPL experience.

That doesn't exactly point to why everyone's whacking 2/3 Wolves players in majority of the RMTs I'm seeing...

Payet and Gross also had set pieces. Ralls has them, it isn't suddenly harder to take a corner or a penalty (you're just less likely to get them)

My point was that 5.0 mids are usually on the bench anyway, so why wouldn't you want someone who will be nailed (I believe) and that teams set piece taker?

              Fair point, indeed.

Who are the alternate options at that price point? Kenedy, Cairney, Noble, Capoue, Costa and Foden it seems. Yes, Ralls should be a viable option there.

Jota / Neves / Costa -- expect them to start returning points after GW 10/12, at least 1000 mins of EPL experience. Remember Newcastle last year.

For the defenders, its a different story.

I think Bailly really bought Mourinho when he wanted to play in last game after Smalling's injury.

Mou already criticized the players who don't want to play because of minor injuries before, so this gesture surely made Bailly nailed.

He even got the armband now although there are few players who are longer in the club than him.

Rate My Team (Set & Forget for the whole season)

    De Gea
    Mendy | Bellerin | Lovren
De Bruyne | Eriksen (VC) | Mkhitaryan | Jota
    Aubameyang (C) | Firmino | Arnautovic

    Bench : Speroni | Cedric | Romeu | 4.0 (Peltier probably)

If I create a Set and Forget team, I will have equal strengths throughout (all 15 players). No weak bench. Of course, at the expense of one big hitter. But, you never know who is going to be injured over the whole season.

Yep. I think Costa is nailed. Cavalerho will be sub or on his way out...

Don’t rate Richarlison - too much hype. Won’t deliver. Would rather have Pedro or Jota tbf...

Agree re: firmino though. Will have to tinker....!

Not for GW1, as KDB likely won't start. Luiz is a very odd pick as well.

Personally, if I was going without Salah, I'd want to be spending a bit more of that on defence.

          Patricio
          Robertson Bailly (6.0 Chelsea) (5.0/Shaw) (5.0 TAA)
          De Bruyne Mahrez Eriksen
          Aubameyang Agüero

          4.0 | 4.5, 4.5, 4.5

Obviously room to move in defence but I'd be pretty happy with that team. Could have Azp and a 4.5 or a 5.5 like Bellerin for Arsenal's good fixtures.

          Still no idea though...

Mata could be a nice 2-week punt. He is playing a 'false 9' role once again, and it looks like him and Sanchez understand each other.

Given Mou hates Martial while Lukaku, Pogba and Lingard is still MIA. 6.5 and swap him straight for Mkhi or someone else in the 6-7mil bracket after the first 2 GW's ?

    1. Salarrivederci

True, but from what I've seen this 21 minutes Shaw & Darmian could be gold (if Mou plays with WB's due to missing Lukaku, Pogba, Lingard & Matic). Darmian and Shaw so far up the pitch atm.
