Another Sessegnon warning as Brady recovery drags on

Burnley continue to struggle with injury this pre-season as Robbie Brady suffered another setback in his recovery.

His expected absence should make it easier to predict who will start on the wings for them in Gameweek 1 but questions still remain over their goalkeeper situation.

Elsewhere, there was another stern warning for those invested in Ryan Sessegnon (£6.5m).

ATLETICO BILBAO 1-3 FULHAM | FULHAM 0-0 FIORENTINA

  • Goals: Neeskens Kebano (£4.5m), Aboubakar Kamara (£4.5m), own-goal
  • Assists: Jean Michaël Seri (£5.5m), Ryan Sessegnon (£6.5m)

The trio of goals scored against Atletico Bilbao ended a run of three goalless matches for Fulham as Ryan Sessegnon (£6.5m) finally involved himself in attacking returns this summer. It was his cross that Yeray Álvarez directed into his own net towards the end of the first of two Cup of Traditions matches. However, there was further confirmation that Sessegnon offers much less in terms of attacking potential when playing at left-back. He was used there in the second match of the afternoon, for the second time in pre-season, and had little influence on the game. The 12.1 percent of Fantasy managers who currently own the 18-year-old should make themselves aware of that and keep an eye on new signing Maxime Le Marchand (£4.5m) – any injury or suspension to him could force Sessegnon back into defence this season.

These two matches saw new signing Fabri (£4.5m) make his first appearances in goal, and give us a chance to see whether he could take the number one jersey from Marcus Bettinelli (£4.5m) this season. Of particular note was the former Besiktas man’s distribution, able to easily find his full-backs and get play moving well from the back. According to local press, this is an area that Bettinelli has struggled with in the past which could hand the advantage to Fabri, who also has experience of playing Champions League football too.

In front of him in the first match, we saw Le Marchand, Tim Ream (£4.5m), Denis Odoi (£4.5m) and Cyrus Christie (£4.5m) line up as the back-four for the third time in pre-season. No other combination has been used as often by Slaviša Jokanović during the summer, suggesting – barring any further recruitment – they will start at Craven Cottage when Crystal Palace come to visit on August 11.

Neeskens Kebano (£4.5m) has done his chances of featuring from the beginning in that match no harm after a decent display in these friendlies. The DR Congo international faces competition for a start on the flanks of the front-three from Sessegnon and Andre Schürrle (£6.0m), who made his first appearance for Fulham against Fiorentina, but is currently the club’s top-scorer in pre-season and with more minutes in the bank than Schürrle. However, the German World Cup winner reportedly impressed in his 45-minute spell in the Cup of Traditions final and, as the new signing, is expected to also be in with a strong shout of starting Gameweek 1.

FULHAM XI vs BILBAO (4-3-3): Fabri; Le Marchand, Odoi, Ream, Christie; Johansen, Seri, Cairney; Sessegnon, Kamara, Kebano.

FULHAM XI vs FIORENTINA (4-3-3): Fabri; Sessegnon, Odoi, Ream, Christie; McDonald, Johansen, Seri; Kebano, Kamara, Schürrle.

BURNLEY 0-0 MONTPELIER

  • Goals: None
  • Assists: None

Robbie Brady’s (£5.5m) recovery from injury hit a setback in Burnley’s latest pre-season match, a 0-0 draw with Montpelier. The former Hull City man has been on his way back from a knee injury sustained in December but was forced off with a hamstring problem just before half-time on Sunday. Manager Sean Dyche has sought to ease fears that Brady will be on the sidelines for some time, which should be of interest to Fantasy managers aware of the Irishman’s potential this season.

“It was a very minor thing in his hamstring so we took him off immediately. He’s been out for a while, so we don’t want any secondary injuries if we can help it.” – Sean Dyche

Regardless of how much of a setback this proves to be for Brady, his withdrawal strengthens the case for investment in either Johann Berg Gudmundsson (£6.om) or Aaron Lennon (£5.0m) – the two wingers who started against Aberdeen last week. The Icelandic international has one goal to his name in pre-season and is the key man for set-pieces while Lennon has found the net twice so far this summer and is £1.0m cheaper.

Burnley are still waiting on an update on Nick Pope’s (£5.0m) dislocated shoulder, with him having seen a specialist this week. With Tom Heaton (£5.0m) carrying a calf strain, the prospects of the Clarets’ defence are somewhat up in the air. There is no return date set for either him or Pope yet with Anders Lindegaard the most likely stand-in so far. It may be difficult to invest in £5.0m defenders like James Tarkowski or Ben Mee if there are doubts over the man between the sticks.

“The shoulder joint definitely came out and (went) back in so it just depends on the damage along the way. We’ll see what the specialist says tomorrow. When you look at the incident it was a freaky incident. I’ve seen the stills and it is just a freak moment in a game. It went back in pretty quick, so it depends on the disruption in the shoulder. We’ll find out more tomorrow.” – Sean Dyche

Jeff Hendrick (£5.5m) was the only member of the starting XI that faced Aberdeen to feature from the beginning in this match, as Dyche largely used either second-string options or players on their return from injury problems. Ashley Barnes (£6.0m) was one of the latter, his involvement against Montpelier the first since the opening match of pre-season. The former Plymouth Argyle striker managed 60 minutes before being replaced by Nakhi Wells (£4.5m). Sam Vokes (£5.5m) started alongside him after coming off the bench to equalise for Burnley at Pittodrie.

BURNLEY XI (4-4-2): Legzdins; Taylor, Dunne, Long, Bardsley; Brady (McNeil 42’), Hendrick (Goodridge 60’), O’Neill, Walters; Barnes (Wells 60’), Vokes (Agyei 70’).

At this moment in time, is Azpili the only rotation proof Chelsea defender for the majority of the season?

not even Azpi I doubt, I think Zappa will do some games there as he fits into a back 4 more naturally

Alonso best bet for starts for the majority of the season? Azpili's stats aren't exactly poor. Surely Emerson is a bigger threat to Alonso than Zappa is to Azpili throughout the entire season?

Value is what I am going for into this season. Have a couple of big bangers then fill the team with high PPM players, where defenders shine,

Yes, viable strategy as long as you have a couple of captaincy options. The only thing is that it would be hard to upgrade Cairney if a 8.0-9.5 mid becomes a must have (without sacraficing Aguero / Salah).

I get anxiety everytime I put a ATT cheaper than Wood at 6.5 in. Just cant see anyone who isn't a headache.

But gets more $$$on the field, thats for sure.

I don’t think my third sub ever auto-subbed on last season, so I’m not concerned. Worst case it happens a couple of times and instead of getting 2 points from a 4.5 mid I get 0.

But by comparison I have hazard at 0.5m cheaper than the 11m forward, in my case it was Aubameyang before I switched him out for hazard. If hazard stays at Chelsea he could have a great season under sarri-ball. With 5 points per goal and cs bonus it worth trying him over the forward, imo.

Any of the 4 price bracket palace def look good value. PVA is maybe more of a risk, however, he had 5 goals in last 10 games last season (I think), he’s had at least 2 in preseason. I saw the highlights of their last preseason game. He assisted zaha for one goal and was in the box when another was scored. He’s playing very advanced, looks similar to Alonso’s role.

    Opinion on Ederson:

    1. Probably (possibly?) going to score 20-30 points more than a 4.5m option.
    2. Owning means no city attacking triple up when they may smash 5+ goals in multiple times
    3. Save + BPS points unlikely.

    5.5m + 4m = 9.5m or 4.5m + 4m = 8.5m - 1m extra spend.

In a season with so much uncertainty from the off, I think you need every penny spare. Fabianski 1 point less than Ederson last year.

    Just get a 4.5m keeper!

      I just don't feel comfortable with 4.5 / 4.0. If I go cheap I like ot rotate 4.5 / 4.5 which is only saving 0.5

Hell, right now I have DDG and I am still uncomfortable having a 4.0 bench fodder GK in the odd chance he gets a rest (slim to none I know...)

If this was a plan for the entire season I would agree. However, I will probably WC gw6 or so and Ederson looks like he could get a lot of clean sheets off the bat. Fabianski will probably be in my team after there fixtures improve, I know he will get save points but that really wont make up for a lack of clean sheets.

This is true, it's almost as if every post should begin with your wildcard plans! I've always had a better season wildcarding gwk2, jumping on all the top scorers gwk1, increasing team value with the 0.2/0.3 risers. Those players tended to do well for a few weeks; alas price rises being much less volatile than they were weakens this strategy somewhat.

I had planned this year to just pick a gwk1 orientated team and go from there.

"In a season with so much uncertainty from the off," Ederson, as the only nailed City option, looks the most sensible City asset to get.

"In a season with so much uncertainty from the off," you'll know how many points you're getting from a nailed keeper in one of if not the best defences in the league, instead of trying to predict which of few 4.5s might match him.

I'm not actually settled on the argument myself, but you should at least be open about both sides and try to look at advantages of both

I think the extra 1m spend + being able to get Mendy/Mahrez/Aguero when they play a struggling team is the best option. That's my opinion. I'm not trying to write a journalistic balanced argument.

thats what i thought last season, i started with joe hart when most people has de gea and hart conceded 8 in his first 2 games and de gea got 2 clean sheets, set me way back to start with, not making that mistake again, it can work well but you need to be lucky

From GW2 to GW7 they play all 6 teams that got promoted in last 2 seasons. He’s worth having for that stretch. In terms of having 3 city attackers for that 5-0 game, good luck guessing which 4 or 5 attackers he plays from 8 options.

I’m sure they will, and it would be just my luck that I picked one of Silva, Sane or Mahrez and they are sitting on the bench whilst everyone else gets 15+ points. I’ll take my 6 points a week from ederson and mendy and put my midfield money on hazard.

Speroni is 3rd choice... Miles from a game

Defence is weak, and I think Bellerin is not the best 5.5 to start the season considering fixtures and new coach.

Jorginho is considered a terrible FPL pick. His role at his previous club gave him 2 goals in 130-odd games.

      ATT is good.

Any reason why people consider Mendy a risk? They tried a bunch of leftbacks last season (Delph, Danilo, Zinchenko) - and none really looked the part. And not to forget, Mendy was bought for 60m+.

Moreover, Mendy had a decent recovery from injury. Came back end of last season, was kinda involved in WC but didnt play too many minutes - and overall is an excellent defender.

Every City player bar Ederson will be a slight rotation risk anyway - other than that I see no caveat.

People think he doesn't have full match fitness, concerns which should go away after the community shield. Other than that can't wait to own him especially if city go 3 at the back

City going 3 at the back? Hadnt heard that!

Anyway, 3 or 4 at the back, Mendy is a solid pick for his price given how attacking he is.

He hasn't played a single minute of pre-season.

He's completely crocked. Even if he does play, he'll just get injured within a couple of weeks and you'll have to transfer him out again.

Why is he completely crocked? That was his first injury in years - and he looked OK in both the friendlies and the Denmark game he played for France.

It was his first injury in years?

He was out for almost a season last year with a cruciate ligament injury. Just before that, he was out for a month with a thigh strain, and it he injured himself during the World Cup as well.

Two seasons ago, he was out for a month with a knee injury. He had three additional injuries that season – once he was only out for a week, the other two for around 2 weeks.

And in 2015/16, he had a cruciate ligament injury keeping him out for almost two months. Also a three week long hamstring injury.

          https://www.transfermarkt.co.uk/benjamin-mendy/verletzungen/spieler/157495

The dude is a hamstring tear waiting to happen.

It's not an issue if you are playing a different form of fantasy football. Dugoutfc has a draft night in which you pick any player from the league who becomes yours and only yours so .. no price isn't an issue.

Robbo vs TAA is an interesting one.

I’m fairly certain both are first choice and will start the majority of games. Both have great attacking stats also.

TAA has sterner competition at RB, but I’m leaning towards him due to the material 1.0m saving.

Who are you going with and why? And does Lovren deserve our attention at the same price as TAA?

    1. Saniul

      Clyne a complete no-go now?

He will get rotated too. The rotation for both full backs will happen only when the fixtures pile up.

Clyne & Gomez are definitely a bigger threat to TAA than Moreno is to Robbo, BUT, I think TAA has to be in pole position given his performances last season. I’d prefer Robbo also, but the 1m saving goes a long way.

    2. Jarnathan
      • 7 Years
      5 years, 8 months ago

Robbo to being with certainly, but I have considered a double-up when TAA starts playing. I only have 2 Liverpool at the moment whilst I assess Keita + TAA. I'm not going with Firmino, I think he's fairly priced.

        • Fantasy Football Scout Member

Yeah, if planning an early WC then Robbo makes sense. I think a double up with both could be great, but I’m fairly likely to go with Mane & Salah so need to pick one.

        A) 4.5 & Robbo
        B) 5.5 & TAA

        xxx, xxx, Tomkins, AWB, Peltier

    3. Buck The Trent
      • 12 Years

I might go the TAA route for first few weeks and evaluate. Have a couple of 4.5 defenders to cover from the bench

    4. Reds

Lovren less likely to be rotated, vs TAA (Clyne & Gomez), so I would choose Lovren over TAA. Esp as FB is a tiring position and TAA is only 19.

Baines will be rotated with the new LB and he is old. I like Moses but his minutes are unassured. If he starts he could be good. Bournemouth also purchased a new LB who will probably take Daniels job.

Redmond is a POD, if he plays front 3 he could be ok if Southampton get back into form

Too many risky picks like Mendy, Moses, Mkhi.
Also not sure about Redmond. Like Eriksen as a season pick, although not convinced they will do well from the get go.

Moses, Baines won’t play. Mkhi and Mendy are rotation risks, also Redmond is never a good pick

Oh dear. Sounds like I have a lot of work to do!!! I have 2.5m in the bank. Was hoping to save a little bit so I can buy in form players after first couple of weeks? Bad plan??! Any suggestions on upgrades to mendy, baines, redmond??

      Something like this.
      Fabianski Steke
Mendy(if nailed) Bailly Kolasinac Bamba Wan Bissaka
      Salah Mane Eriksen Maddison 4.5
      Laca Arnie Zaha

I don't think Kola will play many minutes. He has been poor in the preseason.

        Mids good.

Forwards are good, I love Laca, and am just waiting on GW3 to lock him in if his role / minutes are good.

The fwd line is a bit lacking...

Laca not nailed-on, Zaha might go to Spurs... Arnie is decent.

arsenal full back will be rotated throughout the season. Other than that, looks great!

I have Sane and he isn't going anywhere. So:

      A. Mahrez ( Or anyone upto 9 ) + Auba
      B. Sanchez + Laca

        Mahrez and Auba, just.

I think both are solid options.

I think he has a good chance.

Auba is great on the wing. Scored alot of goals for Dortmund there before he got shifted CF. Lacazette playing CF with Auba, Ozil, Mhki behind lets them get there best players on the field and in positions of strength for each individual player

Auba is surely not better on the wing than he is on the CF... Maybe five years before, but surely not now.

The consensus is Auba is a potential 30-goal striker - one of the best in the league... pace is not his only strength, he is a great fox-in-the-box - look at the amount of goals he has scored from inside the box.

I agree with your playing all the best players... But I'd assume the team would surely be better if sign a world class winger like Dembele, and play Auba up top... The debate is still on about whether Laca is good enough for Auba to make a sacrifice.

I guess he will start the season, but pretty doubtful where we go on from there.

Auba has been playing on the left wing, last year and in pre season with Laca up front. Auba usually gets forward almost like playing 2 strikers though

Think it’s either Laca plays or Mkhi plays. Don’t think they’ll be playing in the same team

People waititng to see if Mahrez plays at the weekend before swapping him back in for Mane or hjave people genuinely moved on to MAne?

I would like Mane but prefer to spread the risk.

I think Mane is a better option overall, regardless of "coverage", which is a flawed logic scenario

1m is just a little bit awkward, but could be good to be able to jump on the performing cheap/mid priced midfielders.
1,5 ITB will allow you to switch Auba/Aguero to Kane if (when) he starts firing.

Excellent idea. I used to be obsessed with spending all my budget but found other years that having a little cash gives great flexibility to jump on emerging form in the first week or two. It's a good advantage imo but strictly only for a week or two! Good luck

am i crazy to NOT have any Man City players initially? Given the unpredictability of how Pep will line up, i want to give it at least one week before transferring players e.g. kdb.

Not crazy, and I think many will go City-less to start especially given their opening fixture. If you're considering KDB, perhaps have Sanchez/Hazard for an easy swap- I think he'll have a cracking season.

        Trying to finalise the mids.
        34m for these 4.

        Sane, B Silva, Mane, Ramsey + (4.5m).

        Salahless atm obviously.
These mids good enough to make up for the lack of Salah or am I just fooling myself? Any changes you would look at?

        Would a front line of
        Morata | Laca | Tosun
be viable? It allows me a very strong and balanced team, but an accident waiting to happen when 2/3 get benched?
