Sánchez impresses up front again but Lukaku could make early return

Alexis Sánchez (£10.5m) put on another excellent performance leading Manchester United’s attack in their first win of pre-season on Tuesday, furthering his case for inclusion in Fantasy Premier League squads.

However, it was revealed that Romelu Lukaku (£11.0m) could make an earlier-than-expected return to competitive match action after he cut short his World Cup leave.

Elsewhere there were some chances for Tottenham’s younger players to impress, as those who went the distance in Russia look like they could be back too late for Gameweek 1.

MANCHESTER UNITED 2-1 REAL MADRID

  • Goals: Alexis Sánchez (£10.5m), Ander Herrera (£5.0m)
  • Assists: Matteo Darmian (£5.0m), Sánchez

Alexis Sánchez (£10.5m) put on another impressive performance leading Manchester United’s strike force as they recorded their first win of their pre-season tour. The Chilean now has two goals and one assist this summer, more involvements than any of his team-mates, and is in good form to retain his starting berth against Leicester City on August 10. However, it was revealed after the Madrid match that Romelu Lukaku (£11.0m) and Marcus Rashford (£7.0m) had returned early from their holidays in an attempt to be available for Gameweek 1. It currently looks like Paul Pogba (£8.0m), Jesse Lingard (£7.0m), Ashley Young (£6.0m) and Marouane Fellaini (£5.0m) are the only ones who will definitely be ruled out.

“These are the players that we have, plus Lindelof, that started training two days ago, plus Marcus Rashford, Jones and Lukaku, because they gave to the group and to the team three days of their holidays, so they’re coming back three days early to try and be available for the team.” – Jose Mourinho.

With Sánchez having started the last four up front, accruing 326 minutes in the process, one might expect that he will remain the favourite in that position for Gameweek 1 at least. How long that may last is difficult to predict. So despite the increased Fantasy interest in him over the last few days, that could be quelled by him returning to midfield once Lukaku is back for good.

Mourinho went with three at the back against Madrid with a host of absences in that position, but does not want us to read too much into that. Chris Smalling (£6.0m) is still injured, Marcos Rojo (£5.0m) is preparing for a move away, possibly to Everton, and Victor Lindelof (£5.0m) and Phil Jones (£5.5m) have only just returned from World Cup leave.

“Tactically, means nothing. We tried with the players we had available to organise the best possible team to defend against them. We only had one central defender (Bailly) so I decide because I have only one, instead of playing with two I play with three. Because with three they can support each other a bit more. Timo Fosu-Mensah is a right-back, Scott McTominay is a centre midfielder, we tried to organise the three to make them a bit more comfortable, so I was not working to prepare the team for the future of the Premier League.”

Mourinho may start to change his mind on not standing in the way of Matteo Darmian’s (£5.0m) planned exit from Old Trafford after he was involved in Sanchez’s goal against Madrid. The Italian has the opportunity to make the right-back spot his own with injuries to Antonio Valencia (£6.5m) and Diogo Dalot (£5.5m). With 352 pre-season minutes under his belt, nobody in the right full-back area has had as much summer pitch time as him, so, barring a new signing, he could easily be first-choice for several weeks if he decides to stay in Manchester.

Finally, there was another update on Anthony Martial (£7.5m), who is looking less and less like a Fantasy option worth considering for Gameweek 1. In fact, his time at Manchester United may well be coming to an end after he failed to report back for training after leaving the pre-season tour for the birth of his son. He has also not turned up at the club’s Carrington training complex even after most of his colleagues came back from the States or early from their holidays.

“Anthony Martial? Is better for Karen (Man United press officer) to answer if she wants to answer. We’re here to talk about the game.”

MANCHESTER UNITED XI (3-5-2): De Gea; McTominay (Mitchell 79’), Bailly, Fosu-Mensah; Shaw, Fred (Tuanzebe 68’), Pereira, Herrera, Darmian; Sánchez, Mata (Garner 82’).

AC MILAN 0-1 TOTTENHAM HOTSPUR

  • Goals: Georges-Kevin Nkoudou
  • Assists: None

It was a youthful Spurs side that beat AC Milan in their final International Champions Cup fixture, but there was still plenty to be learned from a Fantasy perspective. Not least because 21-year-old midfielder Luke Amos (not in FPL) has been tipped by Mauricio Pochettino to break into the first team this season. With Spurs missing so many senior players through injury or World Cup involvement this summer, the youngster has had a chance to stake a claim for a place in the side.

“He’s not so young, 21, but maybe he doesn’t have Premier League experience. But his performances in the three games showed it’s not a problem to put him in to play. Maybe he’s going to play ahead of some senior players. I’m more than brave and if I believe in some players I go with all the consequences.”

After the match Pochettino confirmed that the Spurs players who made it as far as the semi-finals in Russia would return to training next Monday. That gives them five days to try and get ready to face Newcastle in Saturday August 11’s lunch-time kick-off. The Spurs manager confirmed that he will need to see each of them individually before making a decision and he is not prepared to either rule out or confirm any of their potential involvements.

“First we need to assess them on Monday and see what happens. Maybe some players look after themselves and they’ve been training, maybe others rest. We need to see and of course we are not going to take risks if some players are not ready to compete, to play. That is so, so clear. But I don’t want you to start asking me why one is and why one is not. I make clear today the statement that if someone is not ready, he’s not going to be involved, because we are not going to take risks. We cannot [pick them] because we need them, or because [they are] some names, or the people will be disappointed. We are going to look after them in the best way, try to help them and start to play when they will be ready, not before.”

Should Harry Kane (£12.5m) miss out on Gameweek 1, Fernando Llorente (£6.0m) has now started every pre-season match for Spurs and should get the nod to face Newcastle, barring any high-profile transfers. The former Swansea man also has four goals this summer, more than any of his colleagues so far.

The goalkeeper situation is not quite so clear. If Hugo Lloris (£5.5m) is not considered ready from the off then either one of Michel Vorm (£5.0m) or Paulo Gazzaniga (not in FPL) are the alternatives. The former has more starts in public matches (two) but the pair are virtually level for minutes played (133 and 137 respectively).

At centre-back, Davinson Sanchez (£6.0m) made his first club start of the summer against AC Milan and now has 135 minutes under his belt. He should be able to start in Gameweek 1 but who he is paired with is still unclear, with Toby Alderweireld (£6.0m) and Jan Vertonghen (£6.0m) in the group to return on Monday. We learned last week that Ben Davies (£6.0m) could play in central defence which would allow Kyle Walker-Peters (£4.5m) an opportunity with Serge Aurier (£6.0m) on the opposite flank.

In midfield, Christian Eriksen (£9.5m) came on as a second-half substitute against AC Milan in his attempts to be fit in time for the trip to Newcastle. He has started twice in pre-season amassing 177 minutes. Lucas Moura (£7.0m) looks a certainty for several weeks with Son Heung-min (£8.0m) absent from Gameweek 2 until potentially the end of August. The former PSG man has started every match so far and accrued 210 minutes in the public friendlies adding three goals and two assists. No Spurs player has been involved in as many as him.

TOTTENHAM HOTSPUR XI (4-2-3-1): Vorm (Gazzaniga 45’); Georgiou (Davies 77’), Sanchez (Carter-Vickers 92’), Eyoma, Walker-Peters; Amos, Skipp; Moura (Eriksen 63’), Nkoudou, Marsh (Aurier 77’); Llorente (63’).

you can get in all 3. one or two of those cheap mids would make way for premium defenders, there a more consistent source of points.

Guys I am going to sleep and dream about (foot)balls:

    Ederson - (Skeletor).

    Robertson - Luis - Bailly - (WBA) - (Jaglieka).

    Salah - Sane - Hughes - Jota - (Cairney).

    Tosun - Arnie - Zaha.

5 Mill in the bank to cater for WC ambiguity...

Most likely Zaha will change to Kun, Aub, Firmino.

Alternatively may upgrade Hughes to Mahrez and have enough for Kane...

For example buying Arnie now is to focus on the longer term, which makes sense not wasting valuable transfers 🙂

Just get Kane in now.. he’s points value is triple and double of your front three picks, any how, you get two players points from one player with him same as the price of having a 6 and 6.5 which your not far off spending with the 7m strikers now and for half the points, I expect your just bottling it just until you see all his goals go in... gl

I would pick Eriksen over the course of a season, since I have a feeling that Sane will still be subject to a lot of rotation. However, for the first few weeks I don't really see Spurs firing on all cylinders and it's likely that Eriksen may play a slightly deeper holding role until other players return to the squad following world cup duties.

If I had to pick a team and stick with it all season, Eriksen would be in it.

      I'd go Mane/Firmino/Sane/Eriksen/Lacazette.

Yep. Last year it was pretty easy to just have him and/or Sterling when they were priced at 8-8.5 and just take the occasional benching. Now with Mahrez in the fold and the prices inflated it's a harder decision.

I am expecting Sane to play around 2600 minutes this year. He has enough EPL experience by now. He has a point to prove. He plays for a free-scoring team. If he doesn't get injured, he will probably hit that mark.

Moreover, you will get the bench points when he doesn't show up.

Based on Sterlings price then Mahrez at 9.5 because next season Mahrez will be at least 11mill. In fact I fully expect Mahrez to match or exceed the poitns he got when Leicester won the league

Probably worth a post re my previous post about rotating captains.

A few years ago I only managed to start in GW3 or 4 due to holidays. Having been a late starter I went with a team of all Belgians as a novelty team during the season that RVP was (allegedly) absolutely essential and a week in, week out captain pick.

At that time there there was only 10 Belgians in the prem that I never transferred in or out and i made up the balance with other picks....which I was free to play, or not play, at any time...and were the only players I transferred in or out.

    Mignolet (another)
    Vermaelen Vertonghen Kompany (Baines cheap)
    Hazard Fellaini Dembele (9.0 cheap)
Lukaku Benteke Mirallas (Mirallas was a fwd back then)

My captain picks rotated between Hazard, Benteke, Lukaku and Fellaini.

I beat the RVP perms captain pick by a distance and ended up with a GW avg only slightly less than the overall winner.

WGTA?...just remind me please. I applaud that decision given the success I had.

Highlights of my season included my highest every weekly rank (14)

18 green arrows in a row

but mainly....A regular poster on here (it may have been Spectrum) commenting "My god is that your team"...HA...A shed load of goals and assists and Clean sheets left right and centre….and all three fwds at 6.5...

          Best team I ever had.

      That's fascinating.

I've always thought that to get the highest possible points total in FPL, you would need to forgo the captain-and-forget players like RVP/Kane/Salah, and instead choose a different captain every week from the tier below.

But nailing those captains every week would be so difficult that it is not worth the risk.

Risk management is a huge element in this volatile and unpredictable game. So whilst having a Salah to captain every week may not be mathematically optimal, it may be the best solution when you measure in risk management.

I'm in no doubt I got a bit lucky. In truth I had no idea much about who Lukaku and Benteke were...or Mirallas for that matter...I just put together a novelty team out of frustration at missing the deadline and hearing that Belgium had some good up and coming players.However...it does prove that you can beat the template even with what appears to be an unlikely combo...and I did.

Also...I accept that the combo I stumbled on for that season was probably at the far end of getting lucky. Dunno how many goals and CS's they got between them but it was a lot...

This. You will make the most points from your money if you can nail the captains every week. I tried that last year and failed miserably. See my comment in your last post. Will repost below.

I am back to the easier tried-and-succesful option: get any one of the top players as captain (Salah / Aubameyang / Hazard / KdB) -- whoever that is and spread my money -- no other player with >= 10m price.

Well, on the previous page - plenty of people were disputing that Sterling at 11.0 isn't overpriced. Well answer me this:

      - Why is he only selected by 2.7%?
      - Why isn't he in any RMT's?
      - How can you justify picking him after Man City have signed ANOTHER attacking midfielder?
      - Do you actually believe he's worth 2.0 more than Alli & Mahrez and 1.0 more than KDB?

      1. Brosstan

        - hes not a good pick after Mahrez arrived
        - hes not a good pick after Mahrez arrived
        - You cant
        - No, not after Mahrez arrived

Mahrez wasnt in the squad when they set the prices. Without Mahrez the price is fair. He would actually have been very good value at that price.

I want my bench fodder to be nailed (or almost nailed) so I at least get appearance points if they need to auto-sub in (hence why I've gone for Dale Stephens). Odoi has a great chance of being involved, but I can't see it being regularly.

I’m thinking if Jimenez (5.5 wolves ST) is a bargain. He’s currently wolves main striker and yet I haven’t seen anyone pick him. His overall pickrate is 3.2% but I think that may be because no one has really thought about him much. Last season for benifica he played 970 mins most coming off the bench and got an small 6 goals 6 assists however now that he will start more often with his style of play I think he will fit perfectly into the wolves team and is good at pens.
Sorry for the long para but I just thought people should look at him

It's tight but I've gone for Robbo.

I've found it interesting that a lot of people are expecting VVD to get on the end of set pieces and score some goals this season, which may well prove to be the case. I actually think though, with the amount Robbo gets forward, that he can improve on his goals scored as well. I bet he gets more than the one he ended up with last season, not to mention all the assists and bonus points!

I expect robbo to get a lot more attacking returns than most defenders. How many headers can VVD realistically score? He will get more minutes though. I reckon either are a good pick.

I keep selling and rebuying Jota. It does feel like he could be the budget gem this season. Any thoughts on this lot?

          Ederson
          Coleman Luiz Robertson
          Richarlison Jota Mane Salah
          Arnie Kun Zaha

          4.0 Tomkins Stephens AWB

You're only hopes of 3+ points from the bench are both palace players. If palace concede gg

What is the point? I don't get it.
If Tomkins and AWB are the best options at their price, why would you not get them?

His 3 defenders are robertson, coleman and luiz. So he's not rotating Tomkins - had he have been rotating him my answer would've been different.

Usually no more than 1 player comes off the bench if any. When Crystal palace face one of the top 6 - that's 12 times a season, who's gonna be on his first bench spot?

He might as well rotate the first bench spot. they're not gonna play anyway - get it now?..

I like what I saw from Richarlison last season under Silva, so I'm happy to give him the benefit of the doubt to begin with.

Coleman could be a goal machine under Silva

Yeah I know what you mean, he's in my team.

Promoted teams tend to start strongly, combined with Everton's defence.... I think he'll notch

          Hi guys,

Could you please RTM? I'm not really sure whether to keep Mendy or not.

          Ederson // Foster
PVA, Robertson, Mendy, Mee // AWB
Mané, Richarlison, Salah, Jota // Mooy
          Aguero Tosun // Kamara

          Cheers guys,

I'd leave Mendy out, for now. You've got the Man City clean sheets covered with Ederson, and you may want to bring in a City midfielder in a few weeks too, so you'll need that third City slot.

What do you think about Zaha vs Tosun?

Tosun but I might consider Wood over both of those

          Salah. Siggy. Costa. Eriksen. (Ward)
          Aguero. Aubameyang. (Quaner)

I'd imagine he'll be fine for GW1, let alone GW2.

Concussion can't be taken lightly. Personally (and I could well be wrong) I think he could miss the first game but be ready for GW2.
In any case, it's a situation that needs to be closely monitored...
