Sky Sports Fantasy Football – A Beginner’s Guide

As the first match of the 2018/19 Premier League season creeps ever closer we switch focus to Sky Sports’ Fantasy game.

We have launched our Free League for the campaign and you can find details of how to join it below.

Here we go over the basics of the game before we delve into more detail in the coming days.

How do I play?

Just like in FPL you select a squad of players that will either earn you attacking, defensive or bonus points in an attempt to score more than your friends, colleagues and/or the rest of the world. However, you choose simply a starting XI and do not have a bench.

Gameweeks run from Friday to Thursday with managers allowed transfers in between Gamedays, allowing maximisation of potential points by bringing in an asset yet to play for one who has already been involved that week.

Also, instead of one free switch per Gameweek (and a maximum of two if a previous one is saved), the Sky Sports game allocates 40 transfers that can be used any time during the season, with a limit of five in one Gameweek, creating the need for a more long-term strategy.

Wildcards, or Overhauls, are also available in Sky Sports. The first one becomes available to use following the completion of Gameweek 4 and remains an option until the deadline for Gameweek 6. The second one becomes active after the final match of Gameweek 27, through Gameweek 28 and until the Gameweek 29 deadline.

In Sky Sports Fantasy you can name more than one captain in a Gameweek depending on who is playing on which day. Managers are limited to one captain per day allowing them to potentially have up to four in one Gameweek and get double points for all of them. For example, if there were fixtures on Friday, Saturday, Sunday and Monday in any given Gameweek, a Sky Sports Fantasy manager could name a different skipper on each of those match days, providing they did so before that day’s deadline. Managers can also schedule their captains ahead of a Gameweek too.

How do you score points?

The points structure is largely similar to FPL in Sky Sports Fantasy but tends to award more points for the actions mentioned below.

ActionPoints scored
Starting XI2
Substitution appearance1
Goal scored by a goalkeeper/defender7
Goal scored by a midfielder6
Goal scored by a striker5
Goal assist3
Clean sheet by a goalkeeper (must play 60+ mins)7
Clean sheet by a defender (must play 60+ mins)5
A penalty save by a goalkeeper5
Man of the Match5

Can My Team Lose Points?

Unfortunately, just like in FPL there are a few ways to lose points too.

ActionPoints scored
Missing a penalty-3
Every goal conceded from the second goal onwards-1
Each yellow card-1
Each red card-3
Each own goal-2

How do Bonus Points work?

Just like FPL there are additional points on offer for other events in matches, although the structure is slightly different, as you will see below.

Tier 1 Action
Points scored
5 saves made (GK only)2
3 tackles made (all)2
60 completed passes2
3 shots on target2
Tier 2 Action
Points scored
7+ saves made (GK only)3
5+ tackles made (all)3
70+ completed passes3
5+ shots on target3

How do I play against my friends?

There are a number of different ways to compete against others in Sky Sports Fantasy. You can create or join a Free League with your friends and colleagues but there are ways to win money too.

Sky Sports can actually administer your money league for you to avoid any awkwardness post-season. You can choose the entry fee (either £2, £5, £10 or £20 per person) and the prize structure beforehand and Sky Sports will take care of the rest.

How can I join the Fantasy Football Scout league?

As usual, we have got a league on Sky Sports Fantasy. It’s called FFScout and you can join using the code 8386881.

I'm guessing Ramsey won't play as far forward this season in a 2 man midfield. What's people's verdict on Ramsey ?

Unai Emery had previously stated his desire to build a team around Aaron Ramsey, but the Welshman could miss out on a regular first team spot given the number of options available. MAybe he'll only start 50/60% of games ?

I think Ramsey will play 90%. Mkhi and Özil will play for the RW spot with a midfield op Torreira, Xhaka and Ramsey. Versus weaker opponents maybe Torreira, Ramsey, Ozil with Mkhi as RW.

Yes, You are probable right. My concern is maybe Ramsey won't be as prolific as last season due to playing in a 2 man rather that a 3 man midfield. I know Wenger give Ramsey more freedom last season which made him a great FPL investment.

Been switching between Ramsey and Mkhi for ages.
It’s was the only decision I had left.
I’ve decided though that I’d rather wait and have stuck Siggy in.

Almost no games played in the last 10 months. Also no games on the WC. So I think they will bring him back slowly and rest him often to avoid another injury. And for 6 mil you need a nailed defender.

I think so. He is a better finisher than Morata, and he makes great runs into the box - often at the right place for a tap in.

Much like Higuain (a bit weaker, obviously), who had his best ever season under Sarri at Napoli. Im sure Sarri sees similarities between them both.

OK - after lots of tinkering, after so much time, I'm nearly there!

    4-4-2:

    Ederson, (4.0)
Mendy, VVD, Robertson, 5.5 CHE, (Obi Wan)
    Salah, Dilva, Ramsey, Pedro/Richarlison, (4.5)
    Lacazette, Morata, (4.5)

    Here's the thinking:

    Formation:
Initially I liked the look of a 4-4-2, having seen lots of discussion and statistics outlining how premium defenders offer a lot more value than cheap strikers. However, with no viable 4.5 options up front, I didn't want to have a non-playing sub, and so made lots of 3-4-3 drafts. Then, however, I realised that the chance of me having to use my third bench option was very slim, and actually my attention should be much more focused on the points week in, week out, where I think 4-4-2 is optimal.

    Personnel:
I have aimed to pick players, in general, where nailedness is guaranteed, and the world cup isn't an issue. I have also aimed to get players that offer value for money, as Salah will be my captain each week, so other premium players are not so important.
This is the main logic behind my picks.

In goal, I've gone for Ederson. He's the most nailed route into the City team, and I'm not confident that I could pick the right 4.5 to match him.
Individually, I think the Liverpool defenders offer more over their similarly priced counterparts than Mane / Firmino do over theirs. I think both VVD and Robertson are brilliant options as they are nailed, have attacking threat and play in a very strong team defensively.
I'm relying on the community shield to get info about Mendy and Sarri's preferred defensive set up. I think a 5.5 defender from Chelsea is great value, and appreciate Mendy is a risky pick, but offers immense value if he looks like starting. If he doesn't I may look to Tottenham's Sanchez as an alternative.

In midfield, I've been persuaded by the recent Dilva hot topic, think Ramsey is an amazing value pick (the only player to have been in every one of my drafts) and Pedro offers great value also (if Willian stays at Chelsea, then Richarlison can fill in). Salah speaks for himself.

Up front, I've gone for Lacazette over Auba because of the price - since I won't be capping Auba I don't think the 1.5 will be as useful there as elsewhere.
Morata is a bit more risky, but he's a nailed striker from GW1 unlike a lot of the other premium options, looks good in pre season, and is playing the role that Mertens played last year who was incredibly prolific.

I recognise the bench is weak. I'd love to have an extra 0.5 to get a better bench option over the 4.5 mid, but I'm not sure where to find it, and from what I've tried so far, I think the investment offers more in the first 11.

Which leads me to ask, are there any better 4.5 mid options than Stephens?

    And, any other thoughts/comments?

    Thanks!

Thanks. Why no to Pedro? Obviously if Willian stays he won't be nailed so I won't keep him, but otherwise 6.5 for a forward in a Sarri front line looks like a bargain, no?

        Why do you think that?
From all the stats and analysis I've looked at, the premium defenders seem to be some of the best value picks available.
        Thanks, though

They are good value alright but the bigger points tend to be scored by midfield and a small number of forwards. Maximise the number of midfielders and I think one premium forward. Good luck

In my humble opinion the Liverpool attack is so free scoring I think you'll be shooting yourself in the foot by having 2 defenders. Also If you do have your heart set on 2 pool defenders- why go for the 2 most expensive? Robertson I am 100% on board with but 12m for 2 pool defenders? Why not get TAA or Lovren?

I'd love to have Lovren over VVD, but I don't know whether he'll start GW1. I suppose if I started with him, I'd have the extra money to get a better bench option for the first week such as Hughes if he doesn't play....

Appreciate it, will take on board your thoughts!

    5. Are you Shaw?

I love the way put this

I am taking a similar route but investing even less on forwards whilst keeping money in the bank

So as you know, Arsenal have two very hard fixtures at the start and even offensively I think they might not do great as well.

Ive gone Tosun - Zaha - Wood because for the first 5 games they offer great value and I have 4 mil outside that I could use to get any premium striker if need be.

But as you magnificently said, we will be captaining Salah either way so why the huge investment in other premium players..

      my team looks like this

      Ederson
      Robertson PVA Coleman Ward
Salah Richarlison Sanchez (plays up top at the start of the season - to be changed to a city mid in GW2)
      Tosun Zaha Wood

Patricio Neves Malone Stephens and 4 M in the bank 🙂

For those considering cheaper midfielders & forwards (5.5m or less)

    Last season:

12 keepers scored 100 points or more
17 defenders scored 100 points or more
8 midfielders scored 100 points or more
0 forwards scored 100 points or more

This is based on the CURRENT prices and listed scorers on FPL

I think it's better to avoid "fodder" & avail of a FULL squad to cater for:

    A injuries
    B rotation
    C no fixtures
    D bad fixtures
    E double game weeks
    etc

So if you are looking to utilise cheaper midfielders or forwards you could be lucky to get any meaningful points from them. This is FAR from exact I know, but playing the odds should hopefully result in a higher overall score I think!

(I'm ignoring my own advice and have McArthur @5m!)

I posted this about a week ago but thought it might help

    Good Luck

Alonso and Mendy v expensive for their lack of nailedness. A more sensible approach might be Azpi/ downgrading, but your risk could pay off hugely as they're both very attacking. Good luck whatever you choose

There has been some good analysis on there somewhere on site.

General consensus is he plays more centrally than Auba but that doesn't necessarily result in more goal threat, and probably more likely to be subbed off for Mkhi

Couple of options I'm playing around with.

    A: Mendy, Ramsey and Neves

    B: Coleman, Pedro and Richarlison

Rest of team reads as follows

    Ederson 4m
Robbo Bailly Luiz XXXX Wan Bisaka
    Salah Sanchez XXXX XXXX Stephens
    Firmino Arnie Wood

A feels more obvious as I will bench Neves most weeks, B gives me a lot of options each week however.... thoughts?

People saying they plan to do Kun -> Auba after GW2 for Arsenal's easier run.

Surely if Kun looks set to be starting games you're not going to drop him with that run coming up? Can't imagine having dropped Kun before 2 newly promoted teams and Brighton (H).
