Introduction to the Article Type

With so many RMTs on site, we’re going to start collecting them in these RMT Community Articles.

To start, site regular and moderator Spencer has given us his team, and some explanations of his choices. Feel free to comment on his team.

This is also a place for you to post your team, and please respond to a few others while you’re at it!

Mods have been alerted, and will spend some time on these pages responding.

Let’s try to keep the main article pages free from RMTs!

Spencer’s RMT

Fabianski – Bettinelli

Mendy – Robertson – Luiz – Boly – Tomkins

Salah – Mahrez – Pedro – Deulofeu – Stephens

Aguero – Arnautovic – Zaha

Goalkeepers

  • 9.0 on goalkeepers.  Fabianski with FPL pedigree.  Unsure on Bettinelli, but rotation with Fabianski looks good.
  • First 10 games: CRY – BOU – BUR – WLV – eve – WAT – eve – bha – cda – BOU

Defence

  • Mendy/Robertson/Luiz/Boly/Tomkins
  • Most I’ve spent in defence from the start – I normally play just one big hitter and 4 rotating cheapies.
  • All defenders with potential for attacking points.
  • Mendy a risk worth taking, looked brilliant before his injury.
  • Luiz a risk, so will keep a close eye on the Community Shield.
  • Tomkins looks to be the best 4.5 for me.

Midfielders

  • Got to start with Salah.  Can always downgrade.
  • Mahrez was brilliant at Leicester.  Playing with better players at Man City, I can only see him getting better.  Another one to look out for in the Community Shield.
  • Pedro is a risk, but if he’s nailed he will get attacking points.
  • Watford fixtures look favourable.  Deulofeu looked grerat when on loan from Barcelona last season.
  • Stephens is my 4.5 bench player.

Forwards

  • Aguero is world class.  Possibly some doubts on whether he starts or not.  Keeping an eye on the Community shield.  Will swap to Aubameyang if there are doubts.
  • Arnautovic ended last season in spectacular fashion and this has continued into pre-season.  Made the mistake of not getting him in last time around.
  • Zaha also reclassified as a forward this season.  Does this mean more bonus points?  Doubts over who his strike partner will be at Crystal palace, but I see him returning points regardless. Will need to reconsider if he moves.

1.0 itb to use in an emergency.  eg upgrade Mahrez to Mane, or Deulofeu to Doucoure.

Conclusion

The Key here is flexibility.  Setting price brackets for positions and then finding the right players to fit in.  eg I don’t know if Pedro is the right 6.5 to have, but can easily switch to Jota, Richarlison, or whoever else.

Thoughts? Suggestions? Where have I gone wrong, and where have I gone right? What do you suggest I change?

      Van Aanholt isn't good value imo. Idk if Rudiger is nailed either.

      Neves not a good FPL pick. Midifeld seems light. Downgrade a premium striker and upgrade in of the mids.

      Looks quality mate. If you have an unbalanced area, you must expect people saying it's too heavy etc but obviously a conscious decision. I say go for it, midfield is beast.

          Davies should be nailed the first couple of weeks.. but not really too tasty fixtures (United in gw2 and liverpool in gw5).

          Sanchez probably the most nailed. But overpriced imo

    First RMT of the new season for me, hope this new article format works out.

    Most of my tinkering so far has been heavy at the back, and this variation is probably the heaviest. I'm just a little tired of the ambiguity regarding starters for the top defensive sides, so I've gone with the most nailed on options, with the sacrifices elsewhere that decision entails. Thoughts?

        He hasn't played in preseason as far as I know, but I think they're just maximizing his injury recovery time. I wouldn't say he's 100% guaranteed to start GW1, but he really has no competition at his position, which you can't say about anyone else in City's defense aside from Ederson.

        As an Everton supporter, what are your thoughts on Jagielka's prospects this season, and your back line in general?

          Imho, Jags will more than likely start GW1 but will be lucky to hold onto his position. Although he is team captain, he is def being phased out because of his age and is there mainly for cover and to train the new boys.

          I think Coleman and Pickford are your best bets. Obv wait on Pickford. Digne/Baines could be great if one of them nails down the spot. Look for Silva to sign another CB now or in Jan.

            If you're set on Stek, why not get Pickford/Stekelenburg and sink the DDG into upgrading Jags. Then you've at least got the GKs covered.

              Stek's just there as a 4.0 placeholder, but I'll definitely consider it. Sounds like Jags might at least be a good bet for the first few gameweeks until we have a clearer idea of which 4.5 defenders are worth owning...

      Most of your picks are fine, I don't love Lascelles but that's not a major issue.

      The big problem I see is the way your team is arranged you don't have an obvious exit strategy if things start to go wrong.

      Imagine that the template is wrong (as it often is this time of year). We come to find that Zaha is stranded out wide rather than the advanced position he played in last year, and Arnie goes cold. How can you address that? There's no obvious candidate to downgrade in midfield or defense to free up some funds for an upgrade.

      You could get to Firmino by downgrading one of Zaha/Arnie to a 4.5, but then you're stuck playing 5-3-2/4-4-2 with a few question marks in at the back and 3 of your 8 players up front who will rarely if ever earn you more than two points.

      I think you'll be better off choosing some players where there are more lateral moves available to you, so you can transfer out players who aren't firing without completely restructuring your team.

          TAA definitely isn't nailed and could be in competition with Clyne for most of the season. I'd stick with Robbo and find a way to get from Shaw > Bailly.

      I've gone with Sane for the opening weeks of the season, but as Mahrez settles in and the rest of City's core players regain fitness, Eriksen will almost certainly be the more reliable option before long.

        Only doubled up so far. But their pricetags. Pedro cost the same as RIcharlison / Jota etc. Morata is a punt, but prefer him over Mahrez as I think he will at least be nailed.

          Yeah, my triple comment was based on your projected transfers in of Luiz/GK.

          The value argument makes sense, I had Fabregas in my side for a while with the same reasoning. But ultimately, I know Jota is basically Wolves' lead attacker. I know Silva LOVES Richarlison. I don't know who Sarri envisions as the key players in Chelsea's attack. I have Hudson-Odoi right now because I'm much more comfortable taking a punt at that price.

      I feel like everyone who has both Alexis and Salah to start the season will either be leaving the rest of us in the dust, or questioning their own sanity by GW3. At one point I managed to squeeze in Salah/Sanchez/Aguero, but it was just too much risk for me, and United's pre-season hasn't exactly been reassuring.

    That’s the ideal team for gw3 onwards
    * = davies to mendy, eriksen to kdb, Sanchez to hazard.
    **= bench TAA for Fraser until know whether he's nailed

    Going on the principle the big hitting mids outscore big hitting forwards.
    Salah 300, kdb 209, hazard 224 two years ago and 233 four years ago.
    Last year highest forwards Kane (217) then vardy (183)

      DEF Mendy, Robbo, Luiz, (Doherty, Wan-Bis)
      MID Salah, Hazard, DeBruyne, Mahrez (Cairney)
      STR Arnie (King, Kamara)

      I'm going with Patricio to keep a 3rd door open for City outfielders.
      The players in brackets will be rotated on and off the bench.
      My current short-term GW1 stand-ins are Mane, Lucas Moura, Jones and Shaw. I'm prepared to take -4 hits for the first 2 weeks if necessary.

        hi Andy,

        This strategy is really banking on King delivering to the same level as 2016/2017 season and what we saw in the run in last season. The fixtures are tasty so it’s going to take some patience if he starts slowly. I’m hopeful, but have 0.5 itb to upgrade to Arnie or Tosun if they start off on fire, especially Tosun who also has nice fixtures.

        I’m also off the mind to use a -4 should de Byrne and mendy be available for gw2. I’m hit averse, but will burn one if it means getting kdb and mendy in for Huddersfield at home. There’s a rumour from kdb’s agent that he might play gw1, so I may start the season with him instead of Eriksen, it might be tough to find out though, as they don’t play until Sunday.

        I can’t convince myself to have any other city mid, hence why I doubled up on defence. Assuming KDB is nailed then there are most likely just 4 other spots for 7 players, 6 if you think b.silva won’t get game time. i can’t see Pep going with the same guys every week and keeping those other stars permently benched. I think it happened last year because there were injuries to Aguero, Jesus, and then Silva was absent. This year is more complex as everyone is fit and now Mahrez complicates it further.

        Completely agree with this.

        Manutd will struggle defsensively too it seems w no matic.

        Im a united fan, and matic is incredibly important for us. So i wouldnt invest bailly just yet.

        If there a player that might be worth it to have it would be sanchez. Looked good in pre season!

      Similar to mine. See below. W having kun and bdavies who might get rotated i would want 2 players who can come of the bench. I think u should upgrade ur 4.0 def. U can downgrade 1 of u attackers to 6.5 king (who has good fixt).

      I like the rest im trippling up on pool as well.
