The 2017-18 season nostalgia picks:

A number of players made their way into my squad before the game opened, last season’s returns fresh in mind..

Andrew Robertson’s end of season form was painful to observe as a Virgil van Dijk owner. At 6.0 he is ready to take up the Marcos Alonso mantle of most desirable defensive option in my opinion.

Mo Salah. Not out of fear. For the joy of FPL points.

With Danny Rose progressing to the World Cup Semi-Finals, Ben Davies was always going to be my next defensive target. The defender served many of us well at the beginning of last season, with double-digit potential and rotation over the opening fixtures less of a concern, he’s a must for me. I am conscious that I held onto Davies too long last season – this year I have earmarked Ben Mendy as my exit strategy, as and when.

Similarly, for Sergio Aguero, an early World Cup exit promoted him to the top of my summer watchlist, the anticipation of Brazil reaching the latter stages and rendering Gabriel Jesus a late starter seemed too good to be true. Aguero was a player I brought in ‘early’ last season at the moment everybody else switched from Morata to Firmino, GW17. I held him all the way through to GW32 so am familiar with the rotational fear that accompanies waiting for a City team sheet. I don’t know if he will be a long term pick, or if I’ll shift to Aubameyang after a few weeks (one of my preferred choices before the fixtures were released), but he’s nailed into my GW1 squad for sure.

Marko Arnautovic is another player I earmarked for inclusion at the end of last season. He’s just a fun player to own.

Kenedy is the final player in this group. A player I was keen on bringing into my squad last season, but for numerous reasons, never got round to, and watched on enviously as he returned a brace two or three gameweeks later. My squad structure includes two 5.0m midfielders and despite poor opening fixtures, he’s a player I’m keen to rotate in and out of my starting XI.

The desirables:

With Manchester City’s outrageous fixture run GWs 2-7, doubling up on attack seems bordering on essential. Having opted for Sergio Aguero, I am keen to leave a third slot open for manoeuvre after one or two weeks, once the returning KDB and co. are back in the mix. Riyad Mahrez is the player I’ve chosen. He’s a player that I’ve felt inclined to ignore over the past two season’s since his well earned price hike following the title winning season. But his FPL returns for Leicester last season, 16pts more than Sane make him almost irresistible in the City lineup. De Bruyne may well end up being the long term hold (or a double up partner) but for now, Mahrez IN!

Christian Eriksen is my third premium midfielder and it is the disarray at Spurs that draws me to him. With Kane potentially making a late return to the first team post-WC, I’m expecting the goal-thirsty Denmark version of Eriksen to step up to the mark.

My final desirable is Josh King. Early drafts included Zaha in this spot, and there are one or two 6.5 forwards I wouldn’t completely rule out – Wood, Mitrovic. King’s end of season form was mildly reminiscent to that of the previous season. Early sound bites from King about being unhappy played out of position last season lead me to believe he is about to recapture something of that form.

The uncertainties:

James Tomkins was a Free-Hit player I owned for Blank-Gameweek-35 last season. A modest 6-point return betrayed his involvement on the day, Livescore kept me informed of his numerous efforts on goal – so close to being a Free Hit hero! However, with Aaron Wan-Biassaka providing the role of 4.0 budget pick, I do wonder if doubling on Palace defence is a little much…

Cedric Soares was another early pick, a player that has always flattered to deceive in FPL. I am concerned about Mark Hughes ability to muster defensive resolve in his back line, not to mention a tummy bug denting his preseason return, so this 4.5 slot is very much up for grabs.

James McArthur was a non-pick last season thanks to the kindly priced Luka Milivojevic. However his goal scoring heroics did not go unnoticed. The arrival of Kouyate (and potentially RLC) could be a concern with the midfield options available to Hodgson fairly numerous. Helder Costa, Ruben Neves and Tom Cairney are all side steps I’m considering.

The Goal keeper pair is something I’ve toyed with a little. Pre-price releases, Dubravka at 4.5 was pencilled in as a potential set and forget, but with the early fixture run, a 5.0 valuation and the arrival and modest pricing of Portugese legend Rui Patricio at Wolves, my head has been well and truly turned!

Tapping in to Sean Dyche’s backline is something that I’ve been conscious of tinkering with since the game opened. With the defensive options receiving a token 5.0m valuation across the board, I see Joe Hart (assuming he hasn’t been brought in as cover for Lindegard!) as a reasonable budget route into the Burnley backline for the short to medium term – a spell that includes a very enticing opening run of fixtures.

Conclusion

Thoughts? Suggestions? Where have I gone wrong, and where have I gone right? What do you suggest I change? Feel free to let me know in the comments!

thinking that 2 palace is too much and trading Tomkins to another 4.5 - maybe Holebas?

Evening fellas, my team current look like this and I would like your opinion on if I should bring in Mendy, make a different change or hold onto the FT.

    Foster (Fabianski)

    Posted wrong section!

    Leno
    Robertson - Mendy - Bailly
    Salah - Mane - B.Silva - Richarlison
    Aguero - King - Arnautovic

    (Hamer - Peltier - AWB - Stephens)

Good to go this week or should I be concerned about Leno? Hoping he'll start soon, especially from GW3 onwards with nice fixtures coming up.

What would you do with this team?

    Foster Fabianski
    Mendy Shaw Robertson AWB Peltier
    BSilva Mane Salah Richarlison Cairney
    Aguero Arnautovic King

    I'm thinking Cairney to Neves.
Would you do this or is there anything else more worth while?

Not that you'll be too worried about bench at this stage but everything I've read suggests Peltier is in danger this weekend, Warnock loves to tinker with his side.

I think only real reason to go Neves is to pick up additional .1 he's likely to go up tonight but you can be sure teams will be identifying as danger man that he is.

Personally I've added him to team I've wildcarded but I'm chasing bank.

Thanks for reply. Yea bench is very weak may have to look at some different combinations and Bennett while he played well the last day isn't nailed long term but I think he's more likely to get more playing mins than Peltier.

I thought about Kane and appreciate he usually has a terrible start but at this stage I'm using him as a differentiating factor if he fails to convince v Fulham I'll ship him b4 he falls in price. Yea two city defenders was never where I wanted to end up but there run of fixtures is just so good I think I will prob have a better return from them over next 6 weeks than other combinations I looked at.

    Robertson - Daniels - Mendy (Tomkins, Wan-B)

    Tosun - Zaha - Kun

Those of us who went Auba over Aguero...still happy with the decision? Personally I am, as both blanked last week and both may score this week...the difference is we won’t have to waste a transfer to switch to Auba for prime Arsenal fixtures starting week 3.

It's your team at the end of the day... if you're having doubts about benching Zaha then don't do it and swap for Peltier.

Is Peltier more likely to keep a clean sheet against Newcastle than Zaha is to score against Liverpool?

Honestly, go with your gut. I asked everyone the other day whether I should go with Jorginho, Cairney or Neves. Everyone said Cairney and he was the only one that didn't score lol.

If I had to choose based on info available so far, I'd find it hard to bench a 7m striker at home, who scored last week, and play a 4m defender for Cardiff against a team that scored against Tottenham last week.

Looks good to me. I'm also saving FT for more flexibility next week. I'm going to captain Aguero this week, the home fixture to Huddersfield is too tempting. Salah could still very easily score but palace will put up a good fight. I have both anyway so as long as they both bring in points, then I don't care 🙂

Mahrez keep. Laca is a tough one. If you have in GW1&2 then need to keep for upturn in fixtures even if no points yet (I've got Mkhi & Auba). If u knew Laca would only get 30mins then would defo get rid, although maybe playing man city was a factor for that?

I'd probably stick and hope for the best. 2FTs gives more options if still want to get rid going into GW3 and worried about mins.

Not seeing any obvious transfers. Another round of games and 2ft could give more options ie Mitro to Jimenez and upgrading Stephen/Cairney.

No need to change anything. Mitrovic obviously isn't looking too good this week but you never know, and it's not worth trying to juggle cheap strikers whose goals are all but impossible to predict.

Definitely save. C doesn't achieve anything. Enjoy having 2FT next week.

Hi all, would really appreciate your advice for this GW...
Should I stick or get another City player in? 1 doesn't seem enough.
Or should I just ship Cook or King for someone with better fixtures?
    Thanks in advance

This is a great opportunity to save transfer Scotty. 2FT is nearly always a better position to be in than looking for the next big thing from week to week. Two weeks = twice as much data to decide on your next move. Cool still isn't a bad option vs WHU - the majority of your points are in Liverpool, Aguero and MUN assets so don't worry.
