Are Kane, Aubameyang and Firmino being unfairly overlooked as FPL assets?

While Sergio Aguero (£11.3m) can boast a Fantasy Premier League ownership of over 50% and the stock of Romelu Lukaku (£11.0m) begins to slowly climb, the popularity of three other premium forwards has been on a steady decline during this campaign.

Harry Kane (£12.5m), Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang (£10.9m) and Roberto Firmino (£9.5m) all feature in the top five most-sold forwards of the season, each suffering a net transfer loss in every round of 2018/19 – with the exception of Kane in Gameweek 4.

With the international break traditionally – for some FPL managers at least – used to contemplate a Wildcard and premium defenders and midfielders such as Marcos Alonso (£6.8m), Benjamin Mendy (£6.4m), Eden Hazard (£10.7m) and Sadio Mane (£10.0m) in high demand, the sale of a costly forward is a quick way of freeing up cash to jump on the bandwagons elsewhere.

In Lucas Moura (£7.3m), Mane, Mohamed Salah (£13.0m) and – until recently – Henrikh Mkhitaryan (£7.2m), Kane, Firmino and Aubameyang also have viable midfield alternatives at their respective clubs who are outscoring them in FPL.

It should be said that Kane and Firmino are still owned by more than one in four Fantasy managers at this juncture. How many of the squads that they and Aubameyang sit in are “ghost teams”, of course, is another matter, given their pre-season popularity: not one of the top ten managers in our Live Hall of Fame owns any of the premium forward trio.

Is there any case for their inclusion in our squads going forward or portents that their form is about to take a turn for the better? In this latest Members piece, we analyse their key underlying attacking statistics and consider if any of them are being unfairly overlooked.

Intersting read about James Maddison on Reddit:

I've been seeing this guy in lots of wildcard teams and his name keeps cropping up in conversations about mid-priced midfielders and I can't understand it in the slightest yet after looking into his stats more.

Maddison averages 2 shots a game. Good right? Well, not really when 1.5 of them are outside the box. Certain players like Coutinho and KDB can be considered long-range specialists but Maddison has given no reason yet for anyone to consider him one of those. Out of 8 shots, 6 being from deep is not very great to expect future goals. Just to put this in perspective, Harry Arter from Cardiff shoots as much as Maddison, and shoots more in the box. Even Luke Shaw, a left back, shoots the same amount per game as Maddison, but even he shoots more in the box, averaging 1 shot in the box per game over Maddison's 0.5!

    Total xG: 0.43 - Total Goals: 1

Maddison averages 1.3 key passes per game. For a guy who is supposed to be a creative maestro, that is pretty awful to be honest. So many players beat this, even ones no one really considers. Andros Townsend, Jean-Michel Seri etc. Set-pieces don't even seem to matter. He has 1 key pass from a corner from 4 games.

    Total xA: 0.48 - Total Assists: 1

Guys like Pedro, Lucas, Mkhitaryan, Richarlison, Walcott, Fraser etc. in his price range are all beating him on the stats in one or both categories.

    But wait.

Statistics don't tell the whole story right? I agree.

The only stats that really matter are goals and assists.

    He has one of each.

His goal was a lucky deflected shot that bounced past the keeper.

His assist was basically knocked off of him by Iheanacho who did all the hard work, he didn't even intend his assist.

    But how does he look?

Silky on the ball, makes a few nice passes, a nice young English midfielder to get hyped about.

He's only 21, a young kid, a few games into the Premier League in a new team. He has room to grow, but FPL is about performing and getting numbers right now.

How many times have we seen this before for a young English lad in the league?

Jack Wilshere. Ross Barkley. Andros Townsend. Jack Grealish. Etc. Etc.

Maddison is the new flavour of the English media it seems and the hype is real.

I think some of us are getting sucked into that frame of thinking that so many of us got sucked into by Ross Barkley over multiple years when he was the main lad at Everton and made us all shake our fists every week when an Everton goal popped up on our phones and he was never involved.

That 6.0-7.0 midfield spot in our teams needs a man to fill it and Maddison has been an easy name to shout, the easy name to slot in there.

Leicester has a good run of fixtures for the long-term now, this is true. It's also true that Demarai Gray and Marc Albrighton are beating him out on shots and key passes respectively for the same team and at a cheaper price. Not insinuating you should owner either of them, just making a point.

This sub loves the phrase 'form over fixtures' and the owning of Maddison seems to go against that.

Sure he could be an option at some point, I'm not doubting that. If he starts producing, he should be on everyone's radar. But he hasn't yet.

Are the fixtures enough to make his numbers rise?

Will it make his poor corners so far find slabhead Maguire?

Will it make his long range shots find the top corner instead of row Z?

Has he really shown enough to justify a place in our teams right now?

Agree, lot's of hype and unlikely to succeed as the stats are not looking good currently. I am still going to take a punt on him though for a few weeks. Ride the bandwagon, get some price rises and who knows, may even end up pretending later that I knew all along he would work out alright.

      Great post.

I feel like Maddison is one for the watchlist rather than one for imminent transfer in at this time.

Don't let Az see this post though 😉

Good post. Had him from the start, not so happy with the stats but happy with his points. Vardy has only started one game and got a red card in that one. Hoping the stats will get better with him back in the starting 11.

A link is a HT? Sure, it's a discussion point, but the discussion happened already on reddit 😆 Just seems a bit weird...

My perspective on Maddison is that I never felt the need to bring him in. He could tick over nicely as the season unfolds, so he'sa useful player to have during good fixtures when there are few other alternatives, but very far from essential. There should be no harm in witing and seeing.

I like it when people keep posting things like this - its going to make it all the sweeter when he returns!

I am of course, very biased. This is some great analysis - this is one of my heart over head decisions. I'm entirely convinced he's going to deliver even though the stats may tell a different story.

For me, the main thing was for him to establish himself as a key member of the team. He's done that, the step up from the Championship seems a non-issue for him. He's involved and I think as the season progresses, he'll be used more and more to unlock defences and to create and score goals. I just want to be in at the ground floor.

seconded though i'm not entirely convinced that he's going to bring lots of points. i just thought, prior to this post, i need a sound starter with good fixtures to replace mkhi and had maddison. he's passed my eye test against manu and pool and there you go.
he might not get goals or assists but i don't think this post would be written if joe gomez wouldn't have blocked his shot in the box. so he's getting chances and as the opposition difficulty decreases there's more chance. i liked the play of leicester and think they'll improve and maddison seems the focal point. it'd be very unfair that he's a hype or otherwise; that he's not. the way i see it: a good investment at 6.6 with good fixtures in a relatively good playing team. nothing more!

Nice post. I’ve got with Vardy over Madds. He’s the proven points scorer and with his upcoming fixtures he should score well! While Maddison is definitely more of a hit or miss, but I guess the cheaper price agrees with that.

Matt ritchie all over again. Atleast Ritchie had strong stats. Think we should even consider player hunger and cutting edge before going on bandwagon. Example players like Richarlsion, Deeney, Mitrovic, Zaha are greedy to score every match

Great post. Maddison looks like a good player, no doubt about that, but I'm far from convinced by him from an FPL perspective. Would anyone be bringing him in if not for a deflected goal and lucky assist? I don't think he's shown enough so I'd rather delay replacing Mkhitaryan for a week and get Richarlison when he's back.

Completely agree with this post and good stuff.

Maddison looks great on the eye and is an exciting English player but he won't have a breakthrough season like Dele Alli for example. There is a mad amount of hype about him on here but personally I would rather pay the extra 2.3 and get Vardy.

Dnt really care on stats with 4 games into a season no logic really, this reddit user has got to be banking on 2-3 diffrential in his team and one of them is Maddison. If you are gonna bring stats into the game, god give him 10 games of various opponents. Thanks.

Btw maddison buyers are those who are heavy 3 upfront and cant fit vardy in, so maddison is the best alternative.

3.2% is hardly a hyped-up player. His numbers are mixed but did post some very good ones v liv, his best game yet. He's 6.6m and has some speculative appeal for those who like the fixtures, the return of Vardy and being nailed. Looks fair value atm.

      - A radio last season better than 1 goal every 3 games.
      - The majority of set pieces
      - Playing for a team with the best defender in the league for attacking corner returns.
      - Playing directly by a 20 goal a season striker.
      - A number 10 in positional play as opposed to a number 8 such as Barkley, Wilshire, Ritchie etc.
      - On the eye test the player has everything. A like for like replacement for Mahrez.
      - A fantastic fun of fixtures
      - 6.6m!

As an owner since GW1 and a firm believer that he should be in England's starting XI I agree with the post. Nobody should bring him in. He can warn me and AZ whilst everyone else wonders whether Pedro will get 30 minutes off the bench.

      Thank you Reddit poster.

The hype was caused by his performance away at Old Trafford of all places. If anyone has watched the game it was obvious he was the main man at Leicester and on the pitch. That tells you something.

And then he got 'lucky' returns which only fuelled the hype.

Anyway, the lengthiness of this Maddison 'dismissal' kind of hints you're scared not owning him.

      Great Post.

I have just taken him in for my wild card after taking out Mhiki now his position looks unsure and also to free up some additional funds.

The one thing this doesn't address which is now glaringly obvious after his late points this week is the fact he is on penalties. I think this point can often be under emphasised. If a team get fortunate with spot kicks this could be around half a dozen goals a season.

Granted I do not have the figures at hand but look at Luka Milivojević last season or James Milner the season before that. One of the key factors if not the main factor for their continual returns were penalties.

The balance of my team at present calls for 2x 6.5M - 7M mids. Currently they are Pedro & Maddison but with the points raised above and Pedros rotation risk with Willian I am not 100% sold on either. Looking to bring Richarlison back in, though I think I will wait until after the away game against Arsenal. I will keep a close eye on who starts mid week for Chelsea in Europe, hopefully Willian plays.

The thing is what are my alternative options? Do I down grade one to a 5.5m and perhaps look to bring in someone like Pogba or at a stretch David Silva? I am coming down on the side of Maddison and Richarlison due to the old FPL adage of picking sure fire starters, or at least as close to it as you can. Perhaps you can forgive the old Pep Roulette due to how heavy the premium players score when they do get pitch time. Any other team I feel if a players starting position is constantly under threat its a head ache I could do with out....

Take a look at Aron Gunnarsson - £4.4 from Cardiff. He has been injuried but should be back this or next week. He should be a sure starter and gives you £0.1m extra to play with in other positions.

      Last three seasons in Championship:
      88 matches
      6 goals
      5 assists
      14 yellow cards

Very similar to a Kun/Kaku draft i penned yesterday out of curiosity of whether i could still have a balanced squad? Turns out i much prefer Wilson in Kaku's spot alongside Kun/Mitro and spreading the 4.8 across defence and midfield to give a far more balanced/flexible squad with a few better 'longer term' picks too.

    A. Maddison
    B. Pedro (already have Hazard)
    C. Another sub 7m mid?

Most likely they will be switched out for Richarlison pretty soon but on WC so want to make the most of the next few weeks. Cheers.

Poch says Alli is out for the Liverpool fixture. Any guesses on how they will lineup? Eriksen in a more advanced position or could Son feature?

Last Season we had the lower team Talisman of Zaha @ Palace and Arnautovic @ West Ham. If we average their points from last season over 90 minutes they returned 4.80 and 5.61 points per 90 respectively. Not bad for a couple of cheaper options

These Talisman's seem to be key to their teams success, when there are goals they are usually involved so great to have.

This Season it seems some more have emerged:

    Palace - Zaha
    Fulham - Mitrovic
    Watford - Deeney
    West Ham - Arnautovic

How many of these do people have in their team? Do you plan on getting any of the others in? Could we see any others emerge? A player like Groß @ Brighton did it last season (5.04 points per 90) and Richarlison @ Watford for the first part of the Season (before he fell off a cliff performance wise), could they get back to being this player for their teams?

I've currently got Zaha & Mitrovic, I've had Arnautovic early season and sure I'll get him back in. Deeney's the one I'm not sure on yet, will too much of his points be shared with Gray?

Own Arnie and Zaha still. They been doing alright and I’ve had other fires to put out. Keeping both for now, as they are so integral as you say. One of them could become Mitro soon though

Deeney's ceiling is about 10 goals I think. If you hit his purple patches you will profit though

Arnautovic is my transfer/WC target from GW9

      Mitrovic from next week

Deeney sounds boring to own, not interested at the moment. Same reason for Zaha, exciting to watch but not so much as an owner.

Wilson getting is done as well. Always makes a difference picking the ‘right’ cheaper options at the ‘right’ time though. Zaha and Arnie are patchy and have shown that so far this season. Wilson very patchy as well but I’m gambling on him for the upcoming fixtures.

    Play two:

    A) Neves
    B) Wallcot
    C) Mkhi

Currently on A and B. Emery presser says all arsenal players are fit so expecting same starting lineup as Cardiff.

like to think tomkins as the CB will be fine.
zaha it's not so much will he play it's how sharp will he be. a slightly rusty groin (grow up!) for a guy who moves and dribbles like him could be a game-changer

Why are people so mad to get rid of Kabasele!!!..

He's imo the best defender to goto right now apart from Holebas !!..
His numbers are great !!.. But i still find a NET TRANSFER OUT for him like he's almost halfway through for a price drop..
