FPL Question Time – Best budget forwards, Aguero dilemma and optimal defensive set-up

Question Time is back as Fantasy Premier League managers face some tough choices going into the second international break of the season.

Sergio Aguero’s latest blank at Anfield and the managing of his minutes has some owners considering offloading him.

Meanwhile, with so many budget forwards performing this season a debate has emerged over which ones are the best to own.

So we’ve put your queries to another panel of FPL personalities…

Who’s on the panel this week?

FPL General – Has finished in the top 500 in three of the last four seasons and is a big influencer in the FPL Twitter-sphere.

James Egersdorff – You can’t get much more experienced than this man when it comes to FPL. After yet another season inside the top 5,000 managers in 2017/18, James is a former leader of the Fantasy Football Scout ‘Hall of Fame’.

Simon March – Winner of FPL in 2014/15.

Question 1 – FPL General

With the fixture shift for many teams ahead, how should we arrange our defence? We have seen Alonso and Mendy make many of us cry before and Liverpool defence and Doherty seem unavoidable.

“My current defensive set-up is Trippier, Alonso, Holebas, Wan-Bissaka and Bennett. My Gameweek 9 transfer will be Holebas to one of Robertson, Mendy or Doherty.

“I’m happy to invest in three premium defenders and roll with the two budget enablers for the next few weeks.

“I missed out on Robertson’s points earlier in the season, and I’ve always felt he’s a player I’d bring in at some point. Now feels like the right time to do so with favourable fixtures ahead for Liverpool.

“I sold Mendy for Trippier two weeks ago which proved to be a good move and I’m happy to hold on to the Spurs man for the time being.

“I’m leaning towards Robertson over Mendy at this point but Gameweek 9 is still a long way away, with the international break.

“As much as I’d like to bring in Doherty, I’m reluctant to triple up on Wolves defensively (I’ve got Patricio as my set and forget goalkeeper). Both he and Jonny are excellent options playing as wing-backs in a very good Wolves side.

“Looking at the fixtures, Pereira (Leicester), Balbuena (West Ham) and Dunk (Brighton) are three others who are on my Watchlist.”

Question 2 – James Egersdorff

Is it time to offload Aguero? If so, who is the best replacement?

“This is a real conundrum with Sergio’s limited minutes becoming a real headache for FPL managers.

I gambled a little ahead of GW8 and took a last minute hit to bring in Harry Kane for Aguero. I didn’t like the fact his game time was being impacted and felt that the Liverpool match would be a low scoring affair.

“Likewise, I thought Kane would deliver against Cardiff and settle himself into a nice run of form. Alas, half my prediction was correct but the continuation of Kane’s poor value for money has left me thinking Aguero may be the go-to option with home games against Burnley and Southampton on the horizon.

A match against Spurs is sandwiched in between but his record against them is impressive having scored 10 goals since he joined City in 2011.

“So this brings me round to whether I think Aguero’s pitch time may improve. Guardiola has spoken about a small injury in recent weeks and given his absence from Argentina’s international squad, perhaps the two-week international break comes at a good time.

Likewise, the main rival for pitch time Jesus finds himself travelling away with Brazil. The return to fitness of Kevin de Bruyne is appealing too as a provider of even more scoring opportunities for the Argentinian moving forward. If uncertainty over Aguero’s minutes do remain though, especially as there are some must-win Champion’s League games coming up, then there are some alternatives FPL managers could look to.

“An obvious upgrade is the aforementioned Kane. Yet to hit top form yet this season, he is still tied with Aguero in second place on the goal-scorers chart.

“His price is at a premium however and FPL managers will have a keen eye on his form for England this week.

“Alexandre Lacazette is probably the in-form striker from the top six, but having been burned with Emery’s decision to bench Mkhitaryan earlier this season it’s a case of once bitten twice shy for me given that there are seven International level players to fill four attacking roles in the Arsenal XI.

“Jamie Vardy is an alternative with favourable fixtures and is almost certain to play but given Aguero and Man City’s goal-scoring prowess and Kane’s track record, it’s a battle between those two for a place in my team at the moment.”

Question 3 – Simon March

With so many good mid-price forwards such as Mitrovic, Arnautovic, Wilson, King, Murray, Jimenez, etc. taking their turns to perform every other week, which do you prefer going forward for the next several weeks?

“Form for mid-priced forwards so often seems tied to good fixtures, not just because they face weaker defences but, also because these are the matches their managers have identified as the ones they need to win.

“Of course, there are some players who seem capable of scoring against anybody, but it’s a much bigger task when they’re isolated up front in a team that is prioritising their defence.

“For that reason, I’m following the fixtures and looking at Marko Arnautovic at West Ham, Glenn Murray at Brighton, and Fulham’s Aleksandar Mitrovic (probably just about in that order) with the caveat that the latter’s fixtures get very mixed after Gameweek 12.

“For the same reason, I’m not as convinced by the long-term potential of the Bournemouth forwards Josh King and Callum Wilson who, you could argue, are the current in-form players.

“After a couple of inviting Gameweeks, their fixtures take a pretty dramatic nose-dive and they’ll need to be at their very best to keep delivering throughout that period.

“However, since we’re juggling a lot of premium options this season, I think there’s also a case for looking at Southampton’s Danny Ings and Wolves’ Raul Jimenez, who, at around the £5.6 mark, offer a decent prospect of goals and the option to invest the savings elsewhere. That Ings is on penalties probably just about swing things for him but there’s not much between them.”

    Pick your best anti-FPL team:

Need to be starters, but lowest points possible

    Thinking:

    Lossl
    Manga Odoi Schindler Hoedt
    Romeu Lemina Cork Rice
    Long Perez

I like the idea of an anti-fpl challenge too.

A rule like you must not take any hits, your team must cost 98m minimum. Lowest points wins.

Sanchez, KdB, Jesus, are the stars along with a whole bunch of expensive second hand defenders.

how does this WC team look? looking at playing 4-3-3, any tips or suggestions welcome.

    Patricio Fabianski
    Alonso TAA/Robertson Mendy Doherty (WanB)
    Hazard Salah Richarlison (Kenedy Obiang)
    Aguero Arnie Mitro/Jiminez

    Also, would you go:

    A) Robertson & Jiminez
    B) TAA & Mitro

    Thanks in advance

I'd go B from those options.
I know Aguero is scary not to own but he is only getting about 60 mins a game so I decided to get rid of him this week.
If you were to downgrade him to Vardy/Lacazette you could upgrade a midfielder on your bench.

Thanks Snev - I think it is close.

Re: Kun - I tend to agree with Egersdorff - hopefully, Pep will see how valuable it is to have his best striker on the pitch after the penalty fiasco. Also, with him having 2 weeks rest whilst Jesus is off with Brazil, I think he becomes even more important. Only time will tell.

Happy to have a weak 4th mid as I feel the value is in full-backs this year.

Assuming there are no injuries over the IB would you swap any of my starting 11 for benched players and is the bench in the right order?

    Patricio (WAT)
Alonso (MUN), Robertson (hud), TAA (hud), Doherty (WAT)
Salah (hud), Hazard (MUN), Richarlison (CRY), Fraser (SOU)
    Vardy (ars), Mitrovic (car)

I'd find it hard to bench Arnautovic. Tottenham nearly conceded to Cardiff on a couple of occasions (and let's be fair to Cardiff....)

Arnie could easily pierce that defense atm.

Especially if you're benching Trip. Which i'm assuming is because you don't think he'll get a clean sheet. Arnie most likely to take that away.

      Thanks for the replies.
I like having a strong bench but it's tricky this week.
I'm not benching a Doherty when he has 3 out of 4 double figure scores and plays at home to Watford.
West Ham vs Tottenham is tough to call, I could see it being 1-2 but I think my starting players have a better chance of scoring points.
Most other weeks there are players with obviously bad fixtures so the benching decision will be much easier.

In my opinion your bench is far too strong and it will give you a headache each week. It's already given me a headache trying to answer your question..... I'd be reluctant to bench either Trippier or Arnie but not sure who else to bench out of that team. Maybe consider dropping one of the Liverpool defenders but then they do have Huddersfield who don't score much. Perhaps i'd drop Fraser or Doherty but they are playing well at the moment and both have a good fixture...

On a different topic, you've already made 4 transfers this week including selling Aguero? That is very bold given City are at home to Burnley and most people will captain him... Good Luck!

I like a strong bench, most weeks there are obvious choices.
Yes, first hit(s) of the season.
I needed Hazard in and Aguero only ever gets 60mins.
AWB to Doherty may have been an excessive -4 but I think it will pay off over the next 8 weeks and I was priced out if I'd waited.

Rank means nothing at this point in the season, I just got lucky at the start.
History over multiple seasons however - yours is very impressive.
I had Aguero until this week but fed up with only getting 60 mins from him and I'm hoping I can capitalise on Vardy's easy fixtures.

Ederson, Mendy, Kun here, and I think it’s looking like Ederson makes way... plenty of 4.5’s who can offer similar value, whereas Mendy & Kun are too destructive to sell

        Hi all
Early thoughts on the transfer for this week. I have one FT and £0.2 ITB.

Zaha needs to go soon but Everton next is not a disaster. Would like to replace him with Arnie for the medium term but West Ham have Sours next. Mitro has three nice fixtures coming up.
Maddison to Richarlson an option given Richarlson playing up front and Maddison at Arsenal. But Maddison has good fixtures thereafter and Richarlson get harder after Palace.
Mendy at home to Burnley also looks attractive as a transfer in but Trippier (or Alonso) would need to go and I have Enderson in goal so double up on city defence.

        A) hold the FT
        B) Zaha-> Arnie
        C) Zaha-> Mitro
        D) Trippier-> Mendy
        E) Maddison -> Richarlson

        The team is:
        Enderson (Hamer)
        Robinson Alonso Trippier Doherty (AWB)
        Salah Mane Maddison Fraser (Stephens*)
        Aguerro Zaha (Kamara)

B or C look good. Thinking about them myself but for next week. Wouldn't do A or E.

Perhaps C would be most appealing from the two but would just wait for 10 days and hope things become clearer.

I'm in a similar situation with Zaha.

Despite me having a feeling that Arnie scores asgainst Spurs, I'm gonna give Zaha one last chance. Not that I think he's worth it with those God awful numbers, but I have other fires to fight this week (with 2 FT) and will almost certainly get Arnie (or Vardy) in the week after

Given Salah's accuracy is moreorless on a par with 2017 but his conversion rate has halved, should we be looking at getting in Lossl for those juicy save points when Salah passs to ball directly nto his hands 6 times?

If they double rise and you don't lose value on the players you sub out. All told, its a small perk but that's about it

If you already got the first rise on Lacazette then you will almost certainly make a profit on him bar an injury etc.

Yes if those players rise by .2m you can sell them and bank .1m profit. Trouble is not many players will do this.

I somehow have yet to see Wolves play this season, so am a little unsure on whether to (belatedly) get Doherty (or Jonny) based only on their stats

With their fixtures stifferning a wee bit, do they sufficiently pass the eye-test to get one of them in despite the fixture dip after this week?

Man Utd target reiterates annoyance at lack of Barcelona action
          Date published: Tuesday 9th October 2018 1:15

Arturo Vidal has once again outlined his frustration at his lack of game time at Barcelona.

The Chile midfielder, 31, moved to the Nou Camp from Bayern Munich on a three-year deal this summer and has started twice in six appearances so far.

He has yet to last a full 90 minutes and admitted last week on social media to being “irritated” by the situation.

Vidal, who is in Miami for Chile’s friendly against Peru on Friday, said he has talked things through with Barca coach Ernesto Valverde.

But that has not stopped the former Juventus man from airing his grievances at his lack of minutes once again.

He told reporters: “I am not happy but if I have a problem with the coach I will say it to his face.

“How am I going to be happy if I don’t play, and me of all people? I am someone that has always fought, that has been in the best teams in the world, that has won everything and who wants to continue winning at Barcelona.

Look at the bigger picture, everyone won't be able to afford salah now without a hit and your team will look well equipped even without kane for this gw and you can move for mendy after two weeks or so when you are sure he is not a rotation risk

Stanislas is the biggest concern. I dont think Utd is that tough a fixture atm, Just ask Newcastle. They then have Newcastle. Next 4 look pretty good fixtures

I really like the Bournemouth players but that is one hell of a run. I am not sure i can justify keeping him for 2 (maybe 3) games.

                  Man Utd (H)
                  Newcastle (A)

I'm looking at rotating Fraser with Maddison and Richarlison. I currently don't need the million elsewhere and don't need to change team balance, and very little appeals a Fraser's price point. Those three see two good/great fixtures per week. Think this is genuinely a case where the optimal move for me is not the cheapest

Bournemouth actually rotate well with Wolves. Switching between Jimenez/Doherty and Fraser is an option.

Opinions are opinions but currently I find it baffling anyone can say that they arent sure about Lacazette.

It's clear and statistically proven he is in fine form and playing almost every minute since week 3, and it is clear Emery knows his worth on the pitch.

He has attacking returns EVERY match since week 3.

He's in on my WC 100% and I'll even start him home to Pool

Depends on team setup. If you have just one pricier fwd then would mean selling someone like Aguero (no from me). If you have two then more of a consideration but Vardy/Firmino have better games. Arsenal's good fixutre run is nearing an end, but just starting for others. Past point are gone, and last game was Fulham.

I think this is a wise move. It's only one week and those players are very costly. If Salah scores low or gets subbed on 60 again there's huge question marks over his value. It seems unlikely he'll go far into double digits. Sterling may turn out to be the stadout option. City are shooting WAY more than Liverpool

                  Pool and Wolves both home
Spurs can be a 6 goal derby

Just looking at the WC posts.

It's seems the new WC teams are same as my WC team from gw 5.

Iv gone from 387k to 4,824 k since then. That's why I play my WC early. Rarely fails.

Because its international break, I've been playing around with which defenders I want for a WC next gameweek. I've done a bit o a projection thing based n fixtures, XG to date, XA to date, clean sheets to date, X conceded, baseline BPS and nailedness. Heres what I come up with for selected players Its for a 6 week period:

                  Robertson - 36
                  Alonso - 33
                  Maguire - 30
                  Luiz - 30
                  Mendy - 29
                  TAA - 28
                  Doherty / Balbeuna rotation - 27
                  Chilwell - 25
                  Trippier -19

Do the above rankings seem reasonable? Quite tempted by Robo, Luiz, Maguire and Doh /Balb.

Assuming Mendy's score is due to not playing as much? Otherwise I'd put him up there with Robbo

Yeah, I've applied a 7/8th reduction to players who might not be nailed (Mendy, Trip, TAA). He also has some mixed fixtures and his expected attacking points aren't quite as great as you'd imagine.

Ooh, good spot. Don't think it makes a radical difference though. he's only got 0.7 xG in 8 games.

thanks for this. Lots of great options, the key thing for me is to optimise for value to ensure mid/attack are as well stocked as possible. With that in mind I'm looking at 2 setups:
                    1) Mendy, TAA, Alonso, Doherty (Awb) - in this formation its a case of bench 1 of Doherty/jimmy/Maddison/richi. in any given week 1 of them has a weak fixture (e.g. Maddison against arsenal next week) at least means the 12th man is always strong in case the top teams rotate.
                    2) Mendy, TAA, Doherty/Balb, (Awb) - frees up cash for a KdB, for example.

                      3)
                      Pat, 4.0
Robertson, Maguire, Luiz, Doherty / Balbeuna
                      Hazard, Mane, KDB (4.4, 4.4)
                      Aguero, Vardy, Wilson

                      * drops mike 🙂

Anyone thinking of 3 medium priced forwards (arnie, jimenez and mitro/wilson) to allow haz, salãh and sterling in midfield?

Salah appears to be a good differential in my ML so tempted to activate WC and get him after a mediocre start (~200k)

                  Who do I downgrade?

                  A.Alonso to Mendy?
                  B. Trippier to TAA?
                  C. Ederson to Patricio?
                  D. Richarlinson / Maddisson to Knockaert?
                  E. Just get Mane

Already have the above plus Hazard Kun Robertson from big hitters

you have the stand out captain in Salah so probably save it unless you prefer Aguero to Kane long term.
you'll have lots more options next week with two transfers

Who would you transfer out Moura for if you got this team and will play a 4-3-3 formation next gameweek. My midfield and forwards is:

                  Mane, Hazard, Richarlison, Moura, Neves

                  Aguero, Vardy, King

                  1FT and 0,0 ITB

                  a) Kenedy (if fit)
                  b) Schurrle
                  c) Knockaert
                  d) Other (who)
                  e) Safe transfer

if your strategy is to stick to 4-3-3 then i would go for a 6 mill or less mid, that way you can invest in forward line upgrades and defence upgrades. top 3 for me on your list are all good choices just depends on where you would spend the extra cash

Thank you for answering. Think my next move will be to upgrade King to Arnie.
