Watchlist Update – Richarlison biggest mover among mid-price midfielders

We have continued with our extensive update of the Watchlist ahead of a return to Fantasy Premier League action in Gameweek 9.

After going through our Goalkeeper and Defender sections earlier this week, we have moved onto the midfielders.

There is little change among the premium options but we have shuffled the pack when it comes to the mid-price assets.

Chelsea talisman Eden Hazard (£11.3m) stays top of the pile going into Gameweek 9. He has proved remarkably consistent this season and still only has one blank to his name in 2018/19. A home match against Manchester United this week may be more difficult than some expect, but Hazard will relish a chance to heap the misery on former manager Jose Mourinho. After that, it’s Burnley (away), Crystal Palace (home) and Everton (home) for Hazard, whose creativity and goal threat underlying statistics show he can sustain his current output in those fixtures.

Mohamed Salah (£12.8m) is another non-mover in spite of the current doubt over his fitness. The consensus seems to be that the Liverpool man’s injury is not too serious and that he was sent home from international duty with Egypt as a precautionary measure. We are sure to find out more at Jurgen Klopp’s Friday press conference. If Salah is fit, then he holds the key to unlocking Liverpool’s potential over the next four matches. They face favourable opponents in Huddersfield (away), Cardiff (home) and Fulham (home).

Raheem Sterling‘s (£11.1m) has been in fine form this season, and during the most recent international break, he was finally able to extend that to England duty. His brace against Spain earlier this week has only drummed up interest in him even more. Sterling has blanked in just one match this season and with a home match against Burnley up next, that is sure to continue. A trip to Spurs and an encounter with Manchester United in two of the next three looks tougher on paper, but Man City should find them easier than most. Outside of that the defending champions also face Southampton, West Ham and Bournemouth. Sterling may be in better form than Salah, but the popularity and pedigree of Aguero presents a popular alternative. There seems to be no such option at Liverpool currently.

Sadio Mané (£9.9m) is looking a doubt for Gameweek 9 following a thumb injury and procedure during the international break, but he is still being assessed for the trip to Huddersfield. Until we know for certain that he won’t play this week it is hard for him to drop down this list, especially considering Liverpool’s appealing fixtures, although we have put a down arrow to reflect the doubt over him. While he cannot compete with Salah for goal threat anymore, Mané is still a much cheaper route into the Liverpool attack.

Rising up the list is Everton man Richarlison (£6.8m). We have now added the Out of Position factor to him after Marco Silva deployed him as a forward in the Gameweek 8 win at Leicester. The Brazilian netted in that game and, given the other options available to the Toffees, we cannot see Silva reversing that decision. Gylfi Sigurdsson (£7.4m) has been making a strong case to replace Richarlison on this list as he recorded more shots, more efforts on target, more chances created and more FPL points than him in the last four Gameweek. We’ve decided to stick with the former Watford man for now on account of his new position and cheaper price.

James Maddison (£7.0m) also rises up the Watchlist as Leicester’s fixtures continue to increase in appeal. The midfielder has demonstrated a nice balance of creativity and goal threat over the last four Gameweeks and is sure to capitalise on the fact the Foxes currently sit third for attacking potential on the Season Ticker over the next seven Gameweeks.

Ryan Fraser (£6.0m) drops a little after he pulled out of the Scotland squad with an injury during the international break. The Bournemouth man holds onto his Favourable Fixtures factor though as Southampton (home), Fulham (away) and Newcastle (away) are three of the Cherries’ next four. However, Fantasy managers should be aware that Bournemouth’s schedule does tighten up between Gameweek 11 and 14 when they face Manchester United (home), Arsenal (home) and Man City (away) in a four-week spell.

A goal in his last match and a very attractive set of fixtures in the next three sees Andre Schürrle (£5.9m) edge up the Watchlist. The Fulham midfielder still ranks favourable for shots taken over the last four Gameweeks (joint-third) and faces Cardiff (away), Bournemouth (home) and Huddersfield (away) between now and Gameweek 11.

Anthony Knockaert (£5.5m) sticks around despite his blank in Gameweek 8. Brighton & Hove Albion sit top of the pile for offensive potential on our Season Ticker when sorted for the next seven Gameweeks, and Knockaert looks their best option in midfield. The Frenchman is cheaper than Pascal Groß (£6.7m) and has outperformed him this season by 19 FPL points too.

Aaron Ramsey‘s (£7.4m) goal and assist against Fulham took his goal involvement tally over the last four Gameweeks to four, meaning we can no longer ignore him. Arsenal are in good form and still have appealing fixtures before they stiffen in Gameweek 14. Furthermore, Ramsey provides a cheaper alternative to Alexandre Lacazette (£9.7m). However, there is a slight doubt over his game time this weekend as his wife just gave birth to twins so we’ll be seeing what Unai Emery says about that in his pre-match press conference.

Paul Pogba (£8.1m) came close to being dropped off the list entirely, at the expense of Johann Berg Gudmundsson (£6.0m) but he managed to survive the chop. Only Harry Kane (£12.5m) has more shots on target than Pogba over the last four Gameweeks and Manchester United have slightly more favourable fixtures in the short-term. After visiting Chelsea in Gameweek 9 they face Everton (home) and Bournemouth (away) while Burnley have Manchester City (away), Chelsea (home) and West Ham (away) as their next three.

Lucas Moura (£7.4m) has come off the Watchlist now that he has no points returns since Gameweek 4. His underlying statistics were never particularly encouraging even during his purple patch, and with Spurs facing some stiffer defences between now and Gameweek 14, it made sense to move Moura on.

Is Moura poor because he's Moura, or because Spurs are poor?

the weird thing is when u watch spurs he passes the eye test very well, i am leaning towards spurs arent great at the mo generally and if they were to hammer a side moura would get on scoresheet and some ..

The problem with TOT is Poch’s “collect from deep” system. Not Kane or Moura IMHO.

Moura is good, but not great IMO. He can run with the ball and has pace, but his finishing and crossing is not up there with the top players. He is a much better version of Adama Traore IMO. He is 26, so you can't say he is a developing youngster anymore.

Moura isn't poor. He's our best player this season

Just because he doesn't return with weekly FPL scores it doesn't make a player poor

    who to bench from this?

    Doherty v wat
    alonso v man u
    mendy v burn
    Taa v Hud
    Fraser v saints
    rich v palace
    salah v hud (obvs not)
    haz v utd (obvs not)
    mitro v card
    vardy v ars
    arnie v spurs

    ? - awb - hojberg

im thinking Alonso at the mo, since chelsea are not as tight as city and pool and his attacking returns have dropped somewhat

Seems daft having such an expensive defender and not playing him at home. Probably academic as Fraser or Salah or both might be out injured/rested. I’d go for Doherty myself, but not sure Mitrovic will do much away at Cardiff.

yes i guess you are right, however it would be mad to bench mitro, too risky imo, if he scores 1 could get 2 and so on...hes that type of player.

        it may be academic yes.

you think rich will do well against palace, he could be benched? i think that is less ludicrous than benching mitro

Reposting from yesterday in its own thread: A comparison of Chilwell and Pereira for those seeking a defender around the 5.0 mark.

Looking at the heatmaps and average positioning across all GWs, it looks as though Chilwell has played very slightly farther forward (as well as less back in defence), but Pereira has had more inward forays and runs into the penalty area.

    Average position per week:

    GW1: Chilwell farther forward
GW2: Pereira slightly farther forward (most defensive match against Wolves wingbacks)
    GW3: About the same
    GW4: Chilwell farther forward
    GW5: Chilwell farther forward
    GW6: Pereira didn't play
    GW7: About the same
    GW8: About the same

Defensive and attacking positioning based on my subjective reading of the heatmaps:

GW1: Pereira defended much deeper; attacked slightly less forward.
GW2: Pereira defended very slightly deeper; attacked slightly less forward - though got into the box more
GW3: Pereira defended very slightly deeper; attacking touches spotted all over the place (fewer touches in attacking half, but perhaps more in the attacking third and in the penalty area)
GW4: About the same, if not Pereira slightly deeper again, and attacking a bit farther forward.
GW5: Pereira defended deeper, but Chilwell maybe spent more time in the defensive half; Chilwell attacking a bit more advanced, with both players edging into the box
    GW6: Pereira didn't play
GW7: Chilwell slightly deeper defensively; Chilwell more touches in attacking half, but Pereira a bit farther forward (but then Chilwell a bit more active even farther forward than that, too!)
GW8: Pereira farther back on average. Dense touches in his own half compared to a more light smattering of touches for Chilwell. The same, in reverse, in attack: Chilwell more dense in attacking half

I think it's difficult to choose between them, personally, and you may want to head over to the members area for a deeper look into the stats. However it the opinion of some that Pereira passes the eye test more pleasingly than Chilwell. Check out this thread if you're interested in more opinions about the two Leicester defenders: https://www.fantasyfootballscout.co.uk/comment/19086795

This would put you firmly in the Chilwell camp. I would lean that way myself, I think.

And to the contrary, if you would like Pereira but are put off by the lack of nailedness, this analysis can serve as evidence that Chilwell in many ways his equal, so he shouldn't be ignored.

I thought they played 4-2-3-1 mostly. If Amartey plays then he is RB with Pereira at RM/RW. If you look at the team against Liverpool then Pereira was RB there as Amartey didn't play.

Looking at their average positions and heatmaps, Chilwell and Perreira have played in the very comparable positions in every match they've played together, with GW1 the biggest difference (Perreira much deeper than Chilwell).

As far as where the players are placed in pre-match lineups, I don't know without Googling, but Leicester seem to be playing with a back 3 with wingbacks rather than a 4.

Good idea. Personally, I'm avoiding Leicester defence due to better options elsewhere 😀 I'm not convinced Chilwell or Pereira have enough goal threat to justify ignoring their shaky defence, despite their high positioning. Maguire, might have better goal threat, but that's because you're paying more. He still keeps the same number of clean sheets as the rest of them, unfortunately.

As Leicester don’t keep clean sheets as a rule, aren’t they both semi-reverse OOP mids?

You could say that. I wouldn't want any Leicester defenders until they look a but more solid, but teams will still pick up clean sheets once in while, unless they are an absolute shambles, especially with fixtures like Leicesters. Form could start to follow fixtures, but I'm far from convinced yet, personally.

I have Periera and viewing him as a 5m midfielder. He’s going to get the odd clean sheet like 5m MF’s such as Hughes . Having him gives me the option to switch to a 4-3-3 or 4-4-2 when needed. Plus with the good fix u would expect the odd cs.

*if* Salah and Mane are fit I think Bobby F may be the one that gets a rest as he's the one that looks most tired and it's effected his touch and passing the most so far imo.
Plus he's played the most over the IB and had furthest to travel.

If one of mane or salah are confirmed out....then is moura 7.4 to shaqiri 7.0 a worthy punt? Shaq has 3 assists in his last 80 mins of football for pool.

That doesn't sound very encouraging from Pellegrini about Arnautovic.

Zabaleta vs Diop. Are both nailed? And which one would you choose. I know this is not the most exciting choice but forced into this basically.

    Pick one:

    A. Trippier to Robertson and save one FT
    B. Trippier and Cook to TAA and Mendy for free
    C. Trippier and Foster to Robertson and Patricio for free
    D. Cook to TAA and save one FT

I share a similar opinion. But I think it is because Kane is the most creative passer in this injury-ridden Spurs team, excluding Trippier and maybe Aldeweireld.

The effect of not having a creative passer at 6,8 or 10 means Kane has to drop deep when Tottenham seek to transition into the final third, or from the final third into the danger zone. The only other attacking tansitions, this Spurs squad are capable of are, long diagonal ball from CB to advanced Trippier, overlap by Advanced Trippier, to feet into dribble by Son or Moura, Toby longball in behind for Son or Moura.

The causal origin of all the problems are, in my estimation, an over-reliance on Kane and Tripper to deliver make incisive passes.

TLDR: Eriksen's absence puts too much of a creative burden on Kane and Tripper, which in turn causes a "hole" array of other positional problems.

    Richarlison

    Expected goals: 2.11
    Actual goals: 4

    Expected assists: 0.31
    Actual assist: 0

I personally do not think Richarlison is that good a finisher so to see him outperforming his xG by so much is interesting - can he keep it up even if he is OOP?

    http://dailycannon.com/2018/10/keita-set-for-scan-but-mane-salah-and-van-dijk-should-all-be-fit-to-face-arsenal/

As usual, nothing really concrete, but the line in the article is a pretty interesting choice of phrasing:

"From the looks of things, Mané, Salah and van Dijk will easily make it back for Liverpool’s clash with Arsenal, and Milner probably will too."

We can send him an email if Mo doesn't start 🙂

Eriksen back in training. Keeping Kane surely makes more sense now as we all know that Kun's minutes are managed and City's situation in the CL in not that great
