FPL Question Time – Liverpool defenders and best time to sell Alonso

Fantasy Premier League Question Time is back following the return of top flight football in Gameweek 9.

As ever, the FPL community is brimming with questions, which we have put to our latest panel of pundits.

Read on to find out what they think about the best way to cover Liverpool’s defence, whether it’s time to sell Marcos Alonso and how to build the most effective forward line.

Who’s on the panel this week?

FPL General – aka Mark McGettigan, who has three finishes inside the top 400 in the last four seasons and who has a huge following on Twitter. Mark has also appeared on the official FPL Show this season.

Who Got the Assist? – Tom and Nick run one of Twitter’s most active Fantasy accounts and run their very own blog, also producing an excellent regular podcast.

Holly Shand – aka FPL Holly, founder of the popular Fantasy Football Community Twitter account and website and another who has appeared on the official FPL Show in recent months.

Question 1 – General

Is Robertson the only Liverpool defender worth investing in? Should we avoid all others?

“The Liverpool defence is a bit of a minefield right now. Alexander-Arnold, Gomez and Lovren are competing for two places, not to forget Joel Matip as well.

“That’s enough for me to avoid these players in FPL.

“I’ve got Robertson as he’s the safe bet. Van Dijk looks secure as well if you are willing to fork out £5.9m for a centre-back who has zero attacking returns this season.

“If I was going for a Liverpool defensive double-up, it would be the Scottish Roberto Carlos and goalkeeper Alisson.”

Question 2 – Who Got the Assist?

With Alonso’s points drying up and Mendy proving again threatening, should we make the switch now? Or because Chelsea have easier fixtures comparing to City in the next three should we wait after GW 12 to make the change?

“I can see why a lot of people are eyeing the price of Alonso and thinking he could function as a cash cow.

“As we got a hint of with his headed goal this week, you’ve now also got his team mate Rudiger second for goal attempts, just three behind the Spaniard.

“To his credit, Alonso is still getting in the right positions to register attacking returns.

“But the crucial element for me is his ownership. Nearly 50% of managers have him in their squads.

“Chelsea have Burnley Crystal Palace and Everton before the next international break, which on paper is better than what City have.

“Anything in those winnable games and it’s a bona fide rank killer. Other managers may be braver, but I’m not selling until injury forces my hand.”

Question 3 – Holly

Is it too risky to go with three cheaper strikers with none of the big strikers in good form (aside from Aguero) or should team structure still take priority?

“Aguero, Aubameyang and Lacazette are leading the way for premium strikers, and I expect that trend to continue.

“For this reason, I’d say you need at least one expensive striker or maybe even two, with Aguero and Lacazette the pick of the options.

“Bournemouth have provided great value in the cheap striker slot, but as their schedule stiffens, a move for Arnautovic might be wise.

“Mitrovic, Jimenez and Ings are all lacking consistency right now.”

Question 4 – General

While I’m looking to protect my overall rank somewhat. I’m also looking for a differential or two. Who does the panel see making a difference, away from the norm over the next three Gameweeks?

“I’ve had a look at my Watchlist and picked out three differentials who I think could score well over the next three Gameweeks.

“Ben Chilwell (0.8% ownership) impressed me on Monday night against Arsenal. He picked up his first assist of the season, bombing forward from left back for Leicester. He faces West Ham (h), Cardiff (a) and Burnley (h) next.

“Newcastle need to turn things around quickly after a very poor start to the season. Their fixtures are great between now and Boxing Day (they don’t face any of the ‘Big Six’ until then) which could see an upturn in form. Kenedy (1.2% ownership) is the one I’m interested in.

“Jamie Vardy (4.9%) was very quiet against Arsenal, possibly due to illness. Interest in him will be low after two blanks but I can see him back amongst the goals over the next three Gameweeks.”

Question 5 – Holly

Do you view the Wolves defeat as a reality check or an anomaly against a Watford side with a point to prove? How should that affect our utilisation of our Wolves defensive assets over the tricky run of fixtures in the coming Gameweeks?

“Those managers who jumped on the Wolves defence have been fortunate so far, as defensive stability coincided with great fixtures.

“According to expected goals conceded, Wolves are third best in the league, behind Liverpool and Manchester City.

“We must remember that they are a promoted team though.

“Their defence still contains value options, with Rui Patricio a set and forget keeper option, who should do well for save points over the difficult period.

“Doherty is still a great third or fourth defender and Bennett a great bench filler with his 4.2m price.

“It might be time to abandon a starting double or triple up, but still worth carrying one or two in your squad long-term.

“It’s these players that can enable us to afford the popular premium options of Mendy, Robertson and Alonso.”

As LEI tend to struggle in their easy fixtures and 2 gives you an explosive diff from a high scoring team.

How would you fund Sane to Salah here? .8 needed. Bear in my mind my lack of Robbo/Mendy too, which makes me want to shave more than the .8 needed to fund them later.

    Pat Hen
    Alonso Bellerin TAA Doc AWB
    Haz Sane Rich Fraser 4.4
    Kun Laca Jimmy

    A) Laca > Arnie
    B) TAA > Diop

*A) leaves cash for Mendy gw11. B) leaves 0 cash.

Did some quick calculations. Probability of rank being exactly the same as last week as happened to David was somewhere around 1 out of 10000. But will of course depend on the rank and number of gameweeks played.

Think the guys were a bit harsh on Sterling. Rotation risk yes, but doesnt get benched that often after all and provides the goods over the medium/long term. I'll rather spend the extra 1.5 for him over KDB as Sterling is a good captaincy option. Dont mind the odd benching as he'll repay that when he plays. Still got enough points to warrant the extra outlay compared to KDB last year despite less minutes.

Alonso has tailed off slightly but have had 2 tough fixtures in the last 4. You just never know when the points will arrive, he could get 5 or 50 points in 5 GWs. Last year I knee jerked him in and out a couple of times and that went terribly, got the lows but not the highs. This year I'm just gonna stick and count the respectable score at the end of the season.

If everyone could stop selling Mane, that'd be great.
Seriously, he's fit to play tomorrow and has Cardiff at home this weekend.
I just hope he scores big tomorrow, for potential sellers to reconsider.

      Let them sell him.
Then they won't get his points against Cardiff and will have to use another transfer if they want to buy him back later.

    Salah Hazard Maddison Schurrle (Stephens)
    Kane Aguero Arnautovic

Peltier and Kane > Alonso and Vardy looking like the right call here?

Alonso yes, but as you already have Maddison as Lei cover I would choose a cheaper striker like jimenez and invest the money in your defence, which would still look quite light like even with Alonso. Liverpudlian defensive cover is a glaring omission, I think Robertson is a higher priority for your squad than Alonso.

Due to Mendy's price rise, I'm 0.1m off bringing him in directly for Doherty for southampton in gw11. Which downgrade looks best to enable Mendy in a RAM defence?

    A) Richarlison to Schurrle
    B) Mitrovic to Wilson
    C) Mitrovic to Jiminez and keep Doherty (lose Bennett instead)
    D) Ignore Mendy for now

What to do with this lot and 2FT? Looking for inspiration. The only things I can see are Mitro > Arnie or improving a Keeper for now.

    2FT £0.3itb (97k OR)

    Foster
    Alonso, Robbo, Doherty
    Salah (c), Haz, Fraser, Hughes
    Aguero, Wilson, Mitro*

    (Fab) (Rich, Duffy, AWB)

    All advice appreciated!

That's tricky cause Mitro to Arnie should wait a week. You may not want Wilson and Fraser next week but you do for Fulham. Duffy to Balbuena for West Ham fixtures? Pretty sideways that. Foster has a good fixture, otherwise I'd like to move him for Patricio?

Here, downgrade Rich to 4.5 so you can upgrade Wilson to Arnie and AWB to Balbuena next week and go 4 at back... or burn a transfer.

Could bite you if Rich delivers in his easy home games... and it would leave you with three cheap mids which could be a hassle getting in mid priced options who start firing, but I think there is more value in defenders around 6 mil price point.

This is the thing, I reckon Pep will want to rest Mendy every so often (must remember what a serious injury he has returned from recently). Both great options imo but with Spurs at home this week, unsure about all of these Trip to Mendy transfers that are being advised on here this week.

I doubt it's equal to be honest - Mendy has been 100% nailed on every game that he's been fit for. We shouldn't forget after all that Delph was only a left-back by necessity last year, he's not genuine competition like Aurier is.

I thought about him a while ago, but need the easy fixtures for him I reckon. But if they somehow win their hard games, he’d be a huge differential.

Barring any injuries from the CL/Europa fixtures, what should I do next?

    2 FTs, 0.1m ITB

    Fab / Foster
    Alonso / Robbo / Doherty / Yedlin / AWB
    Hazard / Bilva / Richarlison / Maddison / Stephens
    Aguero / Kane / Mitrovic

I'm chickening out from my initial thoughts of Kane & Bilva to Arnie & Salah.

really? I'm quite concerned with Arnie to be honest, not sure if that's a good pick.

I'm having another thought of doing this for -4:

        Bilva + Richarlison + Kane
        Mane + KDB + Arnie

Arnie posted his best goal threat v tot, beating his previous best @bri the week before, goals imminent.

Kane and Bernardo to Salah and Arnie is a solid move man! Nothing wrong with that, Salah is the perfect captaincy candidate for you!

I appreciate Bernardo has been a good pick for you and most, but im adamant he'll be the one who's minutes are massively reduced now!

yes I agree he needs to go with the return of KDB. Actually he's #1 priority on my list.

I'm very tempted with this actually, with the return of Mane imminent.

            Bilva + Richarlison + Kane
            Mane + KDB + Arnie

WOL LEI CRY CHE next 4 home gamws for Brighton

BUR MCI CAR CRY next 4 home games for West Ham

Brighton much better at home and although their away games are attractive i'd personally think on home games alone i'd go Fab.

Emile Smith-Rowe has looked a great talent from the little I've seen of him. If Ramsey goes and two of Özil, Iwobi, Mkhitaryan and Aubameyang get injured he might get a look in.

I'd appreciate some opinions on Ramsey? I've only had him 1 week and he was benched. I knew the risks, but he was a WC punt. Never mind, is he worth keeping? Im not sure he'll start this weekend!

Really hard to predict Emery's lineup on any given day. I'd personally steer clear of Arsenal for time being. Fixtures are pretty poor til GW16 as well. Some nice options at that price, Siggy, Maddison, a punt on Martial or B.Silva if you fancy some more wheel of fortune.

Thanks man, some good suggestions there. Martial is one punt onto the next really, and i own Richarlison so dont fancy doubling with Siggy! Martial could be a good shout. Any news on Gross? I've had my eye on him for a while
