Dugout Discussion

Sane in for Mahrez while Hazard is named on the Chelsea bench

Two Premier League matches overlap one another this afternoon, with Manchester City and Chelsea enjoying enticing-looking home fixtures and carrying the hopes of legions of Fantasy managers after a somewhat underwhelming set of results for many FPL bosses on Saturday.

The action kicks off at 15:00 GMT, with Southampton – without a goal in five Premier League matches – the visitors to the Etihad.

Manchester City have won all five of their home league games this season, scoring at a rate of 3.6 goals per fixture at Eastlands in 2018/19.

Nine of Sergio Aguero‘s (£11.3m) ten attacking returns this season (five goals, four assists) have come at the Etihad. The Argentinean striker leads the line for City again this afternoon in his 11th straight league start of 2018/19.

Benjamin Mendy‘s (£6.4m) rate of 7.6 points per match is the best among FPL defenders this season and the French left-back hasn’t failed to record an assist, clean sheet and/or bonus in his seven Premier League appearances of this campaign.

Ederson (£5.8m) and Aymeric Laporte (£5.9m), meanwhile, come into this fixture off the back of recording six straight FPL clean sheets.

Pep Guardiola has made only one change from the side that beat Spurs last Monday, with Leroy Sane (£9.2m) replacing Riyad Mahrez (£8.7m). Raheem Sterling (£11.1m) will, presumably, move across to the right flank to accommodate Sane’s re-introduction.

Nicolas Otamendi (£6.1m) and Ilkay Gundogan (£5.4m) are not quite fit enough for a place on the bench, meanwhile.

Mark Hughes has made three changes to the side that drew 0-0 with Newcastle United last weekend, with Shane Long (£4.8m), James Ward-Prowse (£5.1m) and the fit-again Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg (£4.5m) replacing Charlie Austin (£5.5m), Mohamed Elyounoussi (£6.2m) and Oriel Romeu (£4.3m).

In the 16:00 kick-off, Chelsea take on Crystal Palace at Stamford Bridge.

The Blues have dropped points in their last two home Premier League fixtures but are nevertheless still unbeaten in the top flight this season.

The 44% of FPL managers hoping for a start for Eden Hazard (£11.3m), whose minutes were in doubt ahead of the visit of Roy Hodgson’s side, were left disappointed when the Belgian was named only among the Chelsea substitutes for this encounter.

The Blues, indeed, are unchanged from the side that started the win over Burnley in Gameweek 11, with Ross Barkley (£5.9m) again lining up in the centre of midfield.

Roy Hodgson has made one change to his Crystal Palace side from the 2-2 draw with Arsenal, meanwhile: Max Meyer (£5.6m) replaces Jordan Ayew (£5.8m).

Manchester City XI: Ederson, Walker, Stones, Laporte, Mendy, Fernandinho, Silva, Sane, Sterling, Bernardo, Aguero.

Southampton XI: McCarthy, Soares, Stephens, Hoedt, Bertrand, Lemina, Hojbjerg, Ward-Prowse, Ings, Long, Redmond.

Chelsea XI: Kepa, Alonso, Azpilicueta, Luiz, Rudiger, Kante, Jorginho, Barkley, Pedro, Morata, Willian.

Crystal Palace XI: Hennessey, Van Aanholt, Tomkins, Sakho, Wan-Bissaka, Townsend, Milivojevic, McArthur, Kouyate, Meyer, Zaha.

Done Mitro to Arnie. Next week looking at Wilson to Jimenez. What do you think about the team?

    Mendy/Alonso/Balbuena
    Salah(c)/Hazard/Richar/Madd
    Kun/Arnie/Wilson

Might be an option as you could downgrade Maddison but wait as Leicester have Burnley next up so last chance for Maddison for me

Yeah, this should decide. Also Martial is still tempting as someone in place of Maddy

Honestly would not even be thinking about dropping Wilson if I had him.

I dropped Jiminez this week as he hadn't been doing the business (lol @ me). If you think about the points Jiminez -did- score this week, it was an assist (fouled for a penalty) & a penalty.

He is still not quite getting goals from open play. Not to say that he won't. Cardiff & Huddersfield are obliging. But think before you do.

Just fixtures are very tempting but yes Wilson has rly good form. Maybe if Madd blanks again I will keep Wilson and make some moves involving mid and def

Yep I sold Jim too to raise cash for a Pool attacker. But Sterling (C) got me back to my OR before the mess of not having Pool last week. Strange game this is.

really stumped on what to do this week? any advice?

I'd only look at Schurle.. and save transfers for the invariable injuries from the mid week games and the intl break. Trust your (likely recent) judgments on Success and Yedlin.

disclosure.. I sold Jiminez this week to fund a Pool attacker next week.

Hoping to put an awful GW behind me and rebuild (57 (-4) all out). With my current squad, is anything needed?

    1FT £0.1itb
    Fab
    Alonso, Robbo, Mendy, Duffy
    Salah (c), Haz, Fraser, Madd
    Aguero, Wilson

    (Foster) (Success, Doherty, Capoue)

I’d obv love to get Arnie in but it would mean taking a -4 and dumping Madd for a 4.5. Something like:
    Success, Madd > Arnie, Camarasa/Diangana/Stephens

    Thoughts appreciated!

Extra money in defence has been generally my saving grace this season. Bit reluctant to do that.

Quite content with how this season is going. Haven't played FPL for like 3 seasons. Considering I was sat down in 3m OR before playing my wildcard in GW6, can't complain now as I've managed to claw my way back to a 750k OR.

All it took was a two really lucky weeks 🙂

It’s been one week and he plays his old team next week so plenty of incentive there. What you going to do? Bring in Richarlison v Chelsea away?

Mane. It's not like he's in bad form - just scored a brace last week.

Does anyone have a theory on which style of opponent Pep will choose his 2 wingers on? There must be an explanation to it, and not just he picks whoever he wants at random.

Just trying to figure out why Pep thought it was best to play Sané and Mahrez against Burnley, but then Sané and Sterling against Southampton?

What makes Southampton different to Burnley in Pep’s eyes?

Probably a multitude of factors, which makes it harder to predict. Perhaps the Leicester tragedy was a good excuse for Pep to drop Mahrez and reinstate him next week, given that Sane missed the week before. Maybe Mahrez is a "first choice" player, but Pep doesn't want all his first choicers playing at once, so that form doesn't dip with second choice teams during the week.

Whatever the factors, I think it's too easy to be mislead by second guessing him when we don't have enough info about the inner workings of the club day in, day out. I would just tentatively predict that Sterling, Mahrez and Sane are essentially sharing gametime, with Sterling getting the largest slice of the pie. So bear that in mind when making an investment. No need to sell a player unless they are dropped for at least 2 games (or there is an alternative combo that you prefer, obviously).

How would you use these 2 FTs?

    Patricio Hamer
    Alonso Mendy Robertson AWB Bennett
    Hazard(v) Sterling Richarlison Maddison Stephens
    Aguero(c) Wilson Mitrovic

    Best transfer option?:

    A) Sterling and Schurrle to Salah and deulofeu (captain Salah)
    B) Save ft and captain Mane

that's a 50/50 question... You've got the big risk covered with at least Mane. Sterling was just a machine today and my captain.. so I am prejudiced after my personal mess last week without either Salah/Mane. I assume you have Mane already. MCI is heavily favored vs ManU... so I wouldn't down-sell that .

Best way to save a few quid?

    A. Kenedy to Camarasa/Murphy
    B. Pereira to Duffy/Dunk
    C. Pereira to Fernandez/Yedlin
    D. Obiang to 4.3 (therefore possibly non playing).

Any preference in each case would be ace.

Won't happen - he's been hovering there for about a month. Only if Stephens owners start buying Diangana in bulk I guess, but that might take another impressive showing first.

    2ft 0 itb
    Patricio fab
    Rob Mendy Alonso Doherty Awb
    Salah Hazard Richy Murphy Stephens
    Arny Mitro Aguero

Thinking a mitro downgrade (possibly success) and upgrade Murphy but not sure who to. Or should I upgrade Doherty to a Trippier.

Just made 9 transfers and made my team a ghost ship team.
Just not feeling it this season, I’ve never been a top player so it’s not about doing well but this season just seems to be really boring for me personally, so I’ve decided to quit FPL this season 🙂
Good luck everyone for the remainder of the season and maybe see you all in 9 months 🙂

I've seen you post this boredom thing twice today before now. With all due respect, I do not understand it. The template you describe doesn't really exist, and it's your choice to chase it. The fact that it's not going so well (besides Richarlison this week), is evidence that there were better routes to points over the past 5 or so weeks, and there are so many choices compared to last season in all positions (a few less in forward position currently it would seem, but people can react to that in different ways: patience, punting or restructuring).

Anyway, just my thoughts. Good luck saying away. It might be the best decision to try and break the habit anyway. Start fishing or something 🙂

totally understand and best of luck

Find it more boring over the recent years too. Countless resources telling everyone what to do which has turned folk into into stats men and made the game pretty easy and boring if your into that sorta thing
