Arnautovic delivers as Anderson and Diangana turn FPL heads

Marko Arnautovic delivered much joy for Fantasy Premier League managers in West Ham’s most recent win.

However he was not the only Hammer to grab our attentions at the London Stadium.

We’ve got all the talking points from the match in our latest Scout Notes article.

West Ham 4-2 Burnley

Goals: Marko Arnautovic (£7.1m), Felipe Anderson x2 (£6.8m), Chicharito (£6.2m) | Johann Berg Gudmundsson (£6.0m), Chris Wood (£6.2m)

Assists: Grady Diangana (£4.5m), Arnautovic, Michail Antonio (£6.8m) | Robbie Brady (£5.4m), Ashley Westwood (£4.5m)

Marko Arnautovic (£7.1m) delivered on his promise against Burnley on Saturday by registering his second double-figure haul of the campaign. Gameweek 11 had been pinpointed as the optimum time to own the West Ham forward with their embarkation on an appealing run of fixtures. Arnautovic was involved in absolutely everything for the Hammers and ran the show in an impressive performance.

No player in the match completed more passes in the final third than Arnautovic, who touched the ball in the opposition penalty box more than anyone else too. On top of that, he was positioned perfectly to pounce on James Tarkowski‘s (£4.9m) 10th-minute error to put his side 1-0 up.

The only Fantasy option to have more shots on goal than Arnautovic at the London Stadium was break-out star Felipe Anderson (£6.8m). He found the net twice to record his second double-figure haul of the season and turn the heads of Fantasy managers looking for mid-price options in midfield. The Brazilian is also involved in set pieces and has created nine chances in the last four Gameweeks, no West Ham player has more.

“I talked a lot with him, he never had no chance of not playing today. He knew from the beginning that despite playing bad against Tottenham, he was going to play today. It was a massive performance.” – Manuel Pellegrini

Putting some brakes on any potential Anderson bandwagon, for now, is the fact that five of his eight shots since Gameweek 8 came against Burnley. Furthermore, the Clarets have allowed more attempts on their goal than any other side this season. West Ham’s run of games is admittedly most appealing so we may see him continue that form into future Gameweeks, but perhaps a little more form is required yet before seriously considering him.

Also of Fantasy interest was attacking midfielder Grady Diangana (£4.5m). A potentially season-long injury to Andriy Yarmolenko (£6.8m) has opened up some space in the West Ham midfielder for a youngster such as Diangana to stake a claim for a place. Judging on his performance against Burnley, he has a strong case, registering an assist for Anderson’s first goal. He is another West Ham option to monitor for this long spell of appealing matches.

“Young, technical players they must demonstrate when they have the chance that they are able to handle the pressure. We tested Diangana in the cup and against a team of another level, then we continued with him, I think he is deserving to have these chances. He did it today, he did it very well. Technical players in this game are the players that make the difference. We can talk about the tactical things, of course, physical things but finally a technical players score when they are man to man with the goalkeeper and Diangana is a very good technical player, like Anderson and they were the two playmakers for us.” – Manuel Pellegrini

Also benefitting from Yarmolenko’s absence is Robert Snodgrass (£5.3m). He is yet to record any Fantasy returns this season but has created the same number of chances as Anderson since Gameweek 8 through his involvement in set pieces.

However, one of Anderson, Snodgrass or Diangana may have to drop out of the side when Mark Noble (£4.9m) returns from suspension in Gameweek 13. With options short in holding midfield, Pellegrini went with a 4-1-4-1 formation once again. Snodgrass was deployed in central midfield alongside Pedro Obiang (£4.4m), with Declan Rice (£4.4m) holding, while Anderson and Diangana were lined-up in wide areas. Given his lack of first team experience, it may well be the latter who drops out when Noble is back with Snodgrass shift to the right of midfield.

Obiang did suffer a minor calf injury in the first half but managed to continue his involvement in the game up to the hour-mark. It was him who made way for substitute goal-scorer Chicharito (£6.2m) but Pellegrini insisted after the match that he was in good shape.

“Yes, he is fine. He was coming from a calf injury, played 55 minutes on Wednesday, today he had a problem in his knee with that foul but he was OK.” – Manuel Pellegrini

West Ham’s defence remains a little questionable as they are now without a clean sheet since Gameweek 6. The shutout against Chelsea is their only of the season so far. Despite Burnley coming to the London Stadium with no big chances registered in their previous four outings, they still managed to score twice. That will be of frustration to Lukasz Fabianski‘s (£4.5m) 13.9% ownership.

Burnley’s problems are somewhat larger though as they shipped at least four goals for the third match in a row and for the fourth time this season. With just two clean sheets this season their defensive assets are simply too expensive to consider while Joe Hart (£4.6m) has recorded no more than one point in a match since Gameweek 8 – that is despite earning extras for saves in each of his last three appearances. Despite another pounding for his team, Sean Dyche was still pleased with his defence, with specific reference to Charlie Taylor (£4.4m) and Ben Mee (£4.8m) who made an impressive first-half headed clearance off the line.

“What a bit of defending from (Mee) today, that is as good as I’ve seen in a long time, and I thought he was excellent. So it’s finding the balance when you need the team to work, but Ben Mee’s excellent, Charlie Taylor was excellent, how can you find their performance and add it to the performance of the ones who are quiet, who are back on their game?” – Sean Dyche

Once again, there was rotation of Dyche’s forward players with Sam Vokes (£5.3m) and Matej Vydra (£5.8m) given the nod this time. Substitute Chris Wood (£6.2m) found the net from a second-half set piece to further complicate the striker rotation situation at Burnley.

Robbie Brady (£5.4m) continued his recovery from a long-term injury. After starting against Chelsea in Gameweek 10 he returned to the bench for this one, but assisted in a second-half 15-minute cameo appearance, taking the corner that Wood scored from.

It was revealed after the game that Ben Gibson (£4.8m) requires another operation after he went under the knife for a hernia in September. Tarkowski will also see a specialist this week for a groin problem.

“Gibbo’s not been quite right, so if you’re not right, you’ve got to get it done. It will only be keyhole, so it shouldn’t be a long one, but the same sort of thing. Tarky will see someone this week for a similar sort of thing. So there are a few challenges, so that’s the way it is.” – Sean Dyche

West Ham XI (4-1-4-1): Fabianski; Cresswell, Diop, Balbuena, Zabaleta; Rice; Anderson, Snodgrass, Obiang (Chicharito 61′), Diangana (Antonio 86′); Arnautovic (Ogbonna 91′).

Burnley XI (4-4-1-1): Hart; Taylor, Mee, Tarkowski, Lowton; Lennon (Brady 75′), Defour, Westwood, Gudmundsson; Vydra (Barnes 72′); Vokes (Wood 72′).

    December Rotation Planning
I’m working on the assumption that there will be significant team rotation during December, particularly for some of the stars in the top teams. Here is my attempt to try and identify how that rotation may play out, assuming no injuries etc. For sake of reference, the “A-team” reflects the best team I believe the manager can put on the field and the “B-team” reflects when he rotates some of his stars.

    Man City
    Date Team Home/Away Team Strength
    1 December Bournemouth Home A-team
    4 December Watford Away B-team
    8 December Chelsea Away A-team
    15 December Everton Home A-team
22 December Crystal Palace Home B-team
    26 December Leicester Away A-team
    30 December Southampton Away B-team
    3 January Liverpool Home A-team

    Liverpool
    Date Team Home/Away Team Strength
    2 December Everton Home A-team
    5 December Burnley Away B-team
    8 December Bournemouth Away A-team
16 December Man United Home A-team
    21 December Wolves Away B-team
    26 December Newcastle Home B-team
    29 December Arsenal Home A-team
3 January Man City Away A-team

    Chelsea
    Date Team Home/Away Team Strength
    2 December Fulham Home B-team
    5 December Wolves Away B-team
8 December Man City Home A-team
    16 December Brighton Away B-team
    22 December Leicester Home A-team
    26 December Watford Away B-team
30 December Crystal Palace Away A-team
    2 January Southampton Home B-team

Thoughts? Should I do the same for Arsenal and Spurs and Man U?

      Why might this be helpful?

If you had identified a pattern (a run of consecutive A-teams or B-teams playing) which could be associated with certain players getting a lot of minutes, then maybe it could be a little bit helpful nearer the time.

But even if your estimated "a-team / b-team" were correct, you are still relying on the managers to pick players who reflect these a/b statuses.

I have tried to work out how this might be useful, but I think it is taking forward-planning one step too far into uncertainty

Every week is uncertain, of course (look a few weeks ago when Sterling was benched). However, I'm trying to apply a small measure of analysis to the uncertainty. Take Liverpool and Man City - they have 5 A-team games during the period, while Chelsea have 3 (assume my categorisation is correct). At a very high level I start to consider that Haz might get more rotation/bench time than, say Sterling, over that period and that would influence my decision to get/keep Sterling vs Haz. That in turn affects some of the budgeting and hits I need to plan for during this month.

But in your example hazard is arguably less prone to rotation than sterling, regardless of fixture-rating, demonstrating that A/B values are probably too broad to categorise these players from different teams with coaches who rotate differently.

If you did this for spurs, for instance, the A/B rating would be almost irrelevant to the likes of Kane, who gets played in every prem match he is fit. You just wouldn't be comparing apples with apples.

I like the effort, and do go ahead and run the same analysis on the other big teams if you think it might help. But to me it looks like you are putting a lot of effort into an intangible set of data.

That is of course true, and if I develop the model down to individual players, I could add a player's rotation probability to the analysis. My point this year is to set this up as an hypothesis and see how it actually plays out. There may be no correlation, which in itself is useful to know for next season.

What are these A team or B team selections based on? Can't be purely on the difficulty of the opposition, surely...

Primarily the opposition, some influence by home or away and some because of days rest between matches. These are just my categorisation, of course - you can apply your own criteria and may get to different answers. For example, I'm basing them on current FPL table positions. If something radical were to happen over the next 4GW's (e.g. Chelsea lose 4 fixtures, for example) the current categorisation will be influenced by this.

It will be quite hard to predict especially as Man City and Liverpool have worked on building a large squad that can be rotated at any part of the season. And it's not just basic rotation, there's also the matter of tactics suiting a certain opponent.

So, while i do commend you for trying, i do think it's a bit of a time waste

I agree - but we know rotation will occur, and in past years I've also been reactive to this. Trying a new approach this season (may just be creating the illusion of some sort of control). Also, with some basic Excel skills, this takes about 5 minutes to do, so not a really a hard slog to attempt. And thanks for the constructive feedback.

Thanks - and I completely agree - it's early days for the thinking and will iterate a number of times over the next 3 weeks. I'm not actually sure it will result in anything useful and am actually more interested in seeing if the approach has any statistically significant predictive value whatsoever.

Diangana has looked brilliant. The fans love him.

I noticed that a Jimenez and Diangana rotation, gives these fixtures, up to gw30 (roughly 2nd WC time) all for just over 10m. Will be leaving 1m on the bench every other week, not too bad.

It’ll be Snodgrass that drops out of the middle. Leaving Diangana/Antonio/Snodgrass fighting for the wide spot. Antonio has been poor and is behind Diangana in the pecking order. That leaves Snodgrass, who’s shown great effort but he’s just not quick enough to play there, imo.

Well my plan of Mitro + Westwood > Arnie + 4.4 died last night with Mitro dropping and Arnie rising so, any other suggestions how to get him in, planning to use WC around GW14-15 anyway.
Thinking of giving Maddison the Burnley game and then shipping him out.

          Alisson
          Alonso, Robertson, Tripper, Doherty
          Salah (C), Hazard(VC), Maddison, Fraser
          Aguero, Mitrovic

          Fabs, Westwood, AWB, Kamara.

          2FT 0 ITB
          (Still got wildcard)

How does folk prepare for the upcoming December festive period?

If you have a wildcard in hand, do you plan to use it after the final IB? Or keep it and ride through the festive period with it and deploying it when more injuries strike?
If you don’t have one, how are you prepared for the fixtures? Do you have a strong lineup or do you have a plan in place?

          Interested to hear your thoughts.

Keeping my WC till late December. It's African Cup in January will have big players to move out such as Salah, Mane, Zaha, and I will have lots of cash to play with. Current rank under 200k so playing it close.

I am also trying to look at how the fudge to fit sterling in. That is the only route I can see as well (downgrading salah). Can’t being myself to do it yet due to ownership.

Only other option, and more viable I think. Is losing Aguero.

He is on form, nice fixtures after Man C. Can't see anyone better in that price range and playing OOP.
Only thing that could mess things up is his rotations risk, if any.

Would do B myself, not great fixtures but as you saw on the weekend he can still get goals in the tougher fixtures. Looks in great form.

            B. WIlson the best option there for sure. Could also do Jimenez and use the money elsewhere.

            More Wolves love needed here.

Don't feel good about answering your choices. I was going to skip it but thought I'd chip in.

(Obviously I mean the France squad!)
Anyone know if Lacazette is in the squad for next round of internationals? I can't see the squad anywhere. Thanks!

Really stuck on what i should do with my 2 FT for next GW. Would appreciate some thoughts on what you would do with my squad and funds.

          Patricio
          Mendy, Robertson, Alonso, Doherty, AWB
          Hazard, Salah, Fraser, Westwood, Stephens
          Aguero, Arnie, Mitro

          0.7 ITB
          2 FT

Defo getting rid of Mitro... but not sure what i want and should do.
          A) Mitro & Stephens > Wilson & J.Murphy/Diangana (Which one?)
          B) Mitro > Wilson and save 1 FT (then i have 2 FT over the IB)
          C) Mitro & Stephens > Success & up to 7.2 mid (not sure who. Want Richarlison after next GW)

          Other suggestions?
