FPL Question Time – Case for Sané as Christmas planning begins

Fantasy Premier League Question Time is here yet again to help solve your problems ahead of Gameweek 14.

Liverpool were unconvincing once again, even in a 3-0 win over Watford at the weekend, and some managers are still contemplating move their assets on.

The form of Leroy Sané has caught the eye, and could be a good alternative to the Reds’ midfielders.

We address that subject as well as how to approach the Christmas period and handle life in the top 10,000 Fantasy managers in this article.

Who’s on the panel this week?

FPL Holly – The founder and editor of Fantasy Football Community, as well as a contributor to the FPL Show this season. Holly was sitting just outside the top 1k going into Gameweek 13.

Who Got the Assist? – Nick and Tom are familiar names on social media as the two halves of Who Got the Assist?, the popular Twitter account and podcast. The WGTA boys have also featured on the FPL Show this month.

Chief FPL Manager – Another member of the Fantasy community with a huge Twitter following, “Chief” runs the FPL Hints website and has six top 1% finishes to his name.

Question 1 – Chief

Louis Stein: Is Sané looking like a good option with Mendy out and Pep’s post-match comments regarding Sterling and Mahrez fighting for the right wing spot?

“The more I think about it, the more Leroy Sané makes sense. With 33 points in his last two Premier League starts, he can no longer be ignored.

“Of course he won’t register double digit returns on a weekly basis but if last season’s performances are anything to go by, he’s more than capable of registering a Fantasy return for almost every 90 minutes played.

He was extremely unfortunate not to make the national squad at the summer’s World Cup and it’s fair to say that Die Mannschaft were a weaker unit without him.

“But for what it’s worth, this de facto ‘rest’ and the initial lack of game time up until early September could substantially benefit him in the form of being protected from mid-season burn out.

“Having said that, the spectre of Pep’s rotation will always be risky, especially with the upcoming annual fixture rush in December. Sané won’t be immune to it.

“However, as has been evident in the early stages of this season, Raheem Sterling has also missed out at times in the league too.

“But without Mendy’s presence until at least mid-January Sané may be an automatic starter, subject to on-going form.

“There’s no doubt that with ownership of less than half that of Sterling’s and a price tag costing £2m less that he’s effectively a rare Manchester City attacking differential.

“Best of all, because of his price, you can fit him in your team along with Laporte and Aguero, but this would be far more difficult if you were trying to shoehorn Sterling instead, alongside your other premiums.”

Question 2 – Who Got the Assist?

Fred W: Do you plan on holding Liverpool assets over the festive period? If not, when are you ditching?

“I plan on holding a defender (Robertson) for definite. Their defensive solidity is shown by the fact they’ve conceded the fewest shots on target over the last six Gameweeks.

“In terms of the attack, it’s harder to decide.

“Mohamed Salah and Sadio Mane are the key men there and are (especially in the case of Salah) returning points regularly.

“It’s up to you whether they are value for their price tag or if you think other emerging options are better targets.”

Question 3 – Holly

Doug: With a non-playing second goalkeeper, what are the best options for a set-and-forget keeper over the Christmas period?

“The premium goalkeepers look to be great options over the festive period, as they won’t get rotated, whereas the more expensive defenders are more likely to be.

“Take your pick from any other then Leno, with Ederson the standout.

“Personally, I prefer to have a cheap goalkeeper in my squad, where save points can bolster point totals, along with clean sheets.

I’m tempted by a move to Fabianski, given West Ham’s fixtures. He’s second for saves and joint top for bonus points.”

Question 4 – Who Got the Assist?

James: What are your key tips on climbing the ranks whilst in the top 10k? Template teams are rife with effective ownership considerations playing a part in keeping it that way.

“In the top 10k, it’s about biding your time.

The attraction would be to take risks to try to push on, but if you want to keep climbing it often comes down to one or two very small moves which makes the difference.

“When I (Tom) finished 2.3k in 2015/16, I was in the top 10k all season and, frankly, played a very safe game until the double Gameweeks when I went for it with a few bold picks and was richly rewarded.

So it’s about picking your moment and treading water by playing safely in the meantime. Good luck!”

Yeah, I’m between these 2 at the moment. Not really convinced with CHE’s defence though, and whilst FUL are awful at the back, they often grab a goal. Currently on PVA.

hey all, not sure on keeping Kun, i feel rotation isnt far away, looking at Kane and reckon he will score against Gunners

    a) save FT
    b) Kun/Mane to Kane/Sane (-4)
    c) other

    Ederson
    Laporte VVD TAA Doherty
    Hazard Mane Richarlison
    Aguero Lacazette Arnie

      Hold.
First of all Alonso leaving you team should never be considered. If Haz does not deliver against Fulham then Haz to Sterling the week after and swap Willian out too for free.

We all thought Salah to Sterling might become a popular move, but instead Hazard to Sterling has become the more popular move.

It appears that everyone who jumped on Hazard after his hauls are worried that his fast downward trend in price might affect their team value. Hazard has already dropped once after Gameweek 13 and might drop again before the deadline. That's why people are selling him, despite Fulham coming up next.

On the other hand, the people who got him at a price range between 10.5 to 10.7 might be more patient with him and may hold on for atleast the Fulham match.

I am among the holders, hoping that he plays against Fulham and rewards patience.

Which side do you guys belong to, and what are your thoughts about Hazard ?

Read my username lol.For me it depends on the style of football we play.Right since the bate borisov match then palace then everton and spurs it has been hopeless and our fluidity before that has gone .If we regain that vs fulham i am planning on keeping til gw25 If u just look at fpl points never tells the true story

Plus lets see what pep does tactically due to mendy absence .Think the appeal of sterling has become less for me after that .His versatility to play both wings makes him more nailed and pep plays him in goalscoring positions. But now he may have to tweak the system and yesterday was a prime example ,he was anonymous and more experimentation he will continue to do

The change in Sterling's position in the CL game yesterday was quite an interesting development, or rather a confusing development for us Fantasy managers. Typical Pep!

Not selling in a million years - he’ll be fit for Fulham judging by his last 5 mins v spurs.

Just hope Sarri starts playing Giroud - stats from reddit:

      - Haz With Morata - 0G 3A (513 mins)
      - Haz With Giroud - 7G 1A (377 mins)

I know long term it is good to have City midfield assets but I think bringing in Sane or Sterling could backfire on me this week as one of them is likely to get rested IMO. Also, Bournemouth are a strange team sometimes because they can easily frustrate teams. I’m expecting that game to be 1-0 or 2-0 to City instead of a pasting. I actually think Liverpool will easily beat Everton at Anfield and it’s worth keeping Salah rather than thinking about selling him for Sterling.

It’s not worth selling Salah for City mid next 2-3 games I think but if Haz is injured Sane/Sterling are his top replacements imo.

Dilva because I like his price and how important he is to the team.

Son because he's explosive and mostly because I don't like Eriksen this Season.

Schürrle because he seems more regular.

Gameweek 13 was by far my worst Gameweek of the season. Still managed to somehow stay inside the top 10k. Team doesn't look that bad, and I have 2 FTs and £1.0 in the bank. Any advices ?

    Ryan Button
    Alonso Robertson TAA Doherty Balbuena
    Salah Hazard Richarlison Fraser Camarasa
    Aguero Wilson Jimenez

Was thinking of doing Wilson to Arnautovic, but could go for Zaha if Arnie is injured. If Hazard is injured too I'll probably go for Sterling and burn my 2 FTs.

Any other player I should consider ditching or bringing ?

Got 5.0 in the bank and two options regarding transfers:

    A) Martial --> Sterling/Hazard (I have Aguero)

    B) Bank a transfer, then next gameweek do Jimenez --> Kane and downgrade elsewhere.

    Thoughts?

I'd do A personally, but depends if you want to do the formation change with B next week.

    Ryan
    Alonso • Robbo • Doherty • Awb
    Salah • Haz • Siggy • Rich
    Aguero • Arnie

    (Button / Diangana / Digne / Kamara)

    If Hazard not fit:

    A) Sane
    B) Sterling (Need him to not have a price rise before Friday to afford Kun to Kane midweek)

Keeping Salah for the next 3 and will sell him for another City mid when Pool’s fixtures get tougher in GW17.

    Appreciate your thoughts! 🙂

Haz will probably be ok if planning to lose Kun - Sterling probably the safer replacement of the 2.

        Cheers mate!

I guess I have to wait till Friday and hope Sterling doesn’t have a price rise. Hopefully Haz is fit as no clue what line up Pep will field against Bou.

Sterling but if he is rising, just get Sane imo.

    In long term:

    Martial or D.Silva?

      Dilva.

But Bilva, KDB, Gundg are rotation threats for him but all 3 are injured right now.

Too late had a hit by Saturday night 🙂
Keeping Salah for 13 weeks ain't exactly knee jerk, there was some degree of patience involved 🙂

What ye think of these moves over the next few weeks.

    GW15
    Haz and Bennett
    To Alli and Trippier

    GW16
    Laporte to Bellerin

    Gw17
    Wilson and Stephens
    To Sane and Success

Which would leave the team below. I know the response will be there are no good captain options. But Sterling is and depending on fixtures Alli and Mane can be too. I think some difficult captain choices are ok given the rest of the team and a strong bench especially as Fraser and Jimenez rotate so well. And with this team the bench will be required.

    Ederson

    Alonso Robertson TAA Trippier Bellerin

    Sterling Sane Mane Alli

    Arnie

    Hamer Fraser Jimenez Success

with arnautovic's injuries every now and then, i dont think lone striker strategy will work

Good point. He probably can't play 3 in a week for sure and it's not like there ain't some other rotation risks in there. Thanks will look at other options one of the big back 5 going would have to be the compromise and who would go from the mid for someone like Laca up front I am not sure.

Anyone thinking of getting in Phil Jones (5.1m)? I always expect clean sheets when he plays for them. I think he brings about composure in that back 4.

United have a very favourable fixture list and can be the guy who gets you 6-9 points consistently for that price (he is a baps magnet). What are your thoughts?

      Wont be a regular

      1. ZeBestee

Why? I think he can easily become a regular if Utd start getting CS's. He was really solid last season whenever he played and as much as Utd were bad yesterday, he can still instill some tranquility in that defense with the good fixtures on the way. He was really good last season when fit.

Lindelof-smalling first choice. He might get odd games here and there

"We have Bailly and Jones," Mourinho said. "Marcos Rojo has some little injury and Victor a proper injury that will keep him out for a while, so Jones, Smalling and Bailly are the three we have.''
