Selection of top 10k FPL managers wasted initial Wildcard

A small portion of the current top 10,000 Fantasy Premier League managers took a leaf out of David Wardale’s book and ‘Wasted their Wildcard’ in the first 20 Gameweeks of the season.

Just under 97.08% of those in the top echelon of the game used the chip which was available to them between Gameweek 1 and late December, meaning that just under 3% did not.

These were not even inactive players either. I looked at their teams and confirmed that most of them are actually active managers who change their teams every week.

It could be the case that they did not know the chip expires before the turning of the year, which seems more likely than them knowing the expiry date and not using the chip even to take a couple of hits for free.

The percentage of managers in an overall random sample of 50,000 teams that didn’t use the first Wildcard chip is around 49%.

Taking a closer look at those teams, we find that they are mostly inactive, hence the informal name of ‘dead teams’. So, we know there is a minimum of around 45% inactivity in the game at this point.

The actual percentage will be bigger since many dead teams may have used their Wildcard early in the season before they stopped playing the game.

A future article will look at that question in more detail to quantify the definition of a dead team and calculate how many of them exist.

The arrival of the second Wildcard encouraged 2.55% of the top 10,000 managers to use it right away this week. Their most selected players are shown below.

The resulting chip usage percentages in the top 10k are as follows

ChipTop 10k usageOverall usage
Wildcard2.55%3.64%
Bench Boost9.97%16.76%
Triple Captain11.77%26.21%
Free Hit12.93%19.84%

It is interesting to note how low those percentages are in the top 10k. In previous seasons, it was the case that many managers who enter the top 10k early are those who utilized their chips earlier and took the advantage over more experienced managers who delay their chips till the blank and double Gameweeks.

The percentages in the table above show that most of the managers who are currently enjoying outstanding overall ranks were not particularly helped by the usage of early chips. In fact, no chip has been used by more than 13% of the top 10,000 managers.

The figure above shows that around 75% of the top 10,000 managers have all of their chips intact. If they hold onto them for around 10 more Gameweeks when the blanks and doubles usually start, then we could see something different this year.

As three-quarters of active managers have all the freedom to deploy their chips in any order to cover the double and blank Gameweeks, it might be more challenging to rise up the ranks using late chips strategies like last season.

We will keep monitoring chip usage in the top 10k in the following weeks as we’re entering the second half of the season.

    Cheeky RMWCT:

    Foster, Button
    TAA, Kola, Digne, Doherty, AWB
    Salah, Haz, Pogba, FAnderson, Alli
    Kun, Jimenez, Kamara

Alli -> Son when he returns

Eriksen is great but you seem to have missed Richarlison streak. Maybe someone else in that price bracket like Pereyra? Good form and fixtures.

Would consider selling Anderson instead, especially if you can bring in or already have Arnautovic in order to take advantage of WHU fixtures. See below, very hard to ditch Rich prior to his next three.

    1. Kane + Felipe-> Jimenez + Salah right now (exact cash).

    2. Wait for the fixtures to finish this GW and consider removing Sane or someone else instead. Possibly even delay getting Salah in.

Not keen to sell Auba either.
    Fabianski.
    Holebas, Digne, AWB.
    Sane, Hazard, Pogba, Rich, Felipe.
    Auba, Kane.
    Hamer, Kamara, Doherty, Bednarek.

Lots of Richarlison selling. Everton not looking good, but still brave before Bournemouth, Southampton and Huddersfield. I’m too much of a coward for that, especially considering his ownership overall and top 10k.

Not enough funds for that without another downgrade and hit.

Thinking of riding it out past the next gw and then doing a mini wildcard? I will decide then which one of Auba/Kane gets the chop. Obviously Son will be leaving my squad then. I can also decide whether I prefer Sterling or Salah.

C or D for me. Depending on representation from City and Spurs. Also depending on your appetite for consistent returns (Eriksen) versus explosive returns (Sane).

      1. Niho992

Im probably going for Mane as Liverpool have better fixtures than City.

I also have Kane so im probably going to sell Mane for Son when he returns.

        Dont have cash for Salah.

    Overnight Rises:
    David Luiz £5.9M

    Overnight Fallers:
    Elneny £4.2M
    Welbeck £6.4M
    Puncheon £4.2M
    Keane £4.9M
    Mitrovic £6.6M
    Clyne £4.4M
    Stones £5.2M
    Fellaini £4.8M
    Dier £4.7M

Worth noting that FantasyFootballFix was spot on with only one riser, while FPLstats had 8 or so predicted risers (wildcards distorting things)

Interesting, didn't realise the gap between Kane and Auba on big chances
Complete reversal from earlier on in the season when he was scoring with every shot on target
If I had the two (I only have Kane), I'd be tempted to keep Auba

Same. To be honest I'm even tempted to do Kane to Aubameyang, but the couple of difficult fixtures for Arsenal soon are putting me off. Stats however do point to Aubameyang outscoring Kane if their teams continue playing the same way.

His xG stats vs. Fulham were pretty crazy too - seems weird to say when he scored and assisted, but I feel like I dodged a bullet as a non-owner compared to what could've been.

Sterling is the one that is being sacrificed
Now just at 8% top 10k ownership with Sane at 10% and so there are a lot of active teams with no City
To me the potential next template breaker is if City start free scoring again given Wolves, Huddersfield, Newcastle is a decent (short) run of fixtures after the Liverpool game

Salah is just really consistent, passes all tests, and continues to score FPL points and goals...sometimes you just have to admit a mistake (not owning) and make peace with it and/or correct the error....or, continue to fight against the tide (Salah's EO is huge) in terms of hoping to climb the ranks. It isn't impossible, mind you (to go Salah-less and still succeed) but those big hitters or spread funds you get in his place had better perform even better than you expect them too (and above current averages) for you to do well vs the Salahed squads.

I sold Salah on my WC ahead of GW 16. Probably my worst FPL decision ever. Will get him back this GW however.

On said WC I took in Son which is one of my better FPL decisions. Him and Pogba, who I got last GW, have kept me afloat.

I only just got in Pogba for this gameweek, I've been without Salah, Son, FAnderson, Richarlison & Hazard and it's been killing me1 My strategy of Sane & Sterling has coincided with City's worst run of results and I've dropped from inside the top 50k to just inside the top 200k. The plan of having Kane and Auba has only really come to fruition this week and I'm still not sure if it was the right thing to do. The plan was to trade Sterling for Salah but I fancy him and City to come good at some point, the only issue is that Salah could go on an incredible run with the fixtures coming up.

Yes, lost Salah prior to hattrick, missed Sané and Sterling hauls (wrong way around) and missed FAnderson as swapped for Martial..

Ok, I was moaning here that im out of a cup with 77 vs 77, but turned out that I somehow misscalculated goals and finally won with less goals conceded. So after battling with free hit user im on my way to break another "chipped" team. This time bench boost. At this time opponent wins by 6 points with 4/15 vs mine 2/11 with both Hazard (c). Gonna be close for sure

Pretty confused on who to give up for getting Salah in,Kane or auba ??

    A) give up Kane,

    Kane,son,richarlison/Anderson to Jimenez,Eriksen,Salah (-8)

    B) give up Aubameyang

    Auba,son to Salah, jimenez (-4)
and keep richarlison (along with digne to TAA (-8) )

So, -8 is in both cases

    Current team :

    Fab/button
    Luiz,digne,Doherty,AWB,Yoshida
    Son,hazard, richarlison,Felipe,Pogba
    Kane,auba,Kamara

    Which looks better?
