Selection of top 10k FPL managers wasted initial Wildcard

A small portion of the current top 10,000 Fantasy Premier League managers took a leaf out of David Wardale’s book and ‘Wasted their Wildcard’ in the first 20 Gameweeks of the season.

Just under 97.08% of those in the top echelon of the game used the chip which was available to them between Gameweek 1 and late December, meaning that just under 3% did not.

These were not even inactive players either. I looked at their teams and confirmed that most of them are actually active managers who change their teams every week.

It could be the case that they did not know the chip expires before the turning of the year, which seems more likely than them knowing the expiry date and not using the chip even to take a couple of hits for free.

The percentage of managers in an overall random sample of 50,000 teams that didn’t use the first Wildcard chip is around 49%.

Taking a closer look at those teams, we find that they are mostly inactive, hence the informal name of ‘dead teams’. So, we know there is a minimum of around 45% inactivity in the game at this point.

The actual percentage will be bigger since many dead teams may have used their Wildcard early in the season before they stopped playing the game.

A future article will look at that question in more detail to quantify the definition of a dead team and calculate how many of them exist.

The arrival of the second Wildcard encouraged 2.55% of the top 10,000 managers to use it right away this week. Their most selected players are shown below.

The resulting chip usage percentages in the top 10k are as follows

ChipTop 10k usageOverall usage
Wildcard2.55%3.64%
Bench Boost9.97%16.76%
Triple Captain11.77%26.21%
Free Hit12.93%19.84%

It is interesting to note how low those percentages are in the top 10k. In previous seasons, it was the case that many managers who enter the top 10k early are those who utilized their chips earlier and took the advantage over more experienced managers who delay their chips till the blank and double Gameweeks.

The percentages in the table above show that most of the managers who are currently enjoying outstanding overall ranks were not particularly helped by the usage of early chips. In fact, no chip has been used by more than 13% of the top 10,000 managers.

The figure above shows that around 75% of the top 10,000 managers have all of their chips intact. If they hold onto them for around 10 more Gameweeks when the blanks and doubles usually start, then we could see something different this year.

As three-quarters of active managers have all the freedom to deploy their chips in any order to cover the double and blank Gameweeks, it might be more challenging to rise up the ranks using late chips strategies like last season.

We will keep monitoring chip usage in the top 10k in the following weeks as we’re entering the second half of the season.

Hazard captainers and Auba owners - given overnight results would you say you're still happy with your decision or would rather take the 9 points?

He missed 4 'Big Chances', that's why no bonus. Another day he scores 2 or 3.

      can answer that question tomorrow!
But i ended up putting the C on Hazard just because he's a midfielder and auba a forward...so always more haul potential with mids (if they come through)

I have both but captained Aubameyang. Happy whatever ensues, I'd never complain at a 9-pointer captain. To be honest if I hadn't captained Aubameyang it would have been Kane anyway,

I sold him for Pogba before GW20 even though he was my only City asset. I am thinking I'll get in Kun in a couple of weeks if City start to show some form again. Not sure I can stomach the rotation worries that comes with a city mid anymore haha.

And there are some good reasons why. I don't normally give much credence to the 'better away than at home' stuff because it's usually just short-term noise. But in this case, having looked at average position maps, there looks to be some rationality behind it.

before he left BPL , he was around 10unit player.
Same to Fanderson. when come into BPL, he was a 7unit player.

Indeed everyone looking for a cheap unit, and could be a differential when Snoddy not promising much here.

My luck with Richarlison has been terrible this season! Brought in after missing his GW1 haul and then he ends up getting his red card. Then avoided him until two weeks ago to go 5 in midfield and he's once again been meeeeh.

I brought him and Digne in for the next medium term fixtures though. So I'm forcing myself to be patient.

I have Sigurdsson and Richarlison, planned to give them BOU and SOU game since they are very poor defensively and I expect a high scoring game.

I don't get the hate on Richarlison to be honest. He was priced at 6.5 and has scored 9 goals, not sure what more you can expect. He was never going to be a captain option but he's been the best at his price point so far.

No way are they better options - not overall, and not even recently when Richarlison hasn't been at his best.

I mean I sold Rich GW4 after he got carded and Fraser has same points since then for 6.1m so he has scored the same for much cheaper. I'm not sure what other metric i should judge on

            1. Pierce34
              • 8 Years
              5 years, 3 months ago

Those stats are a bit skewed - Fraser has played every match for one, Richarlison hasn't. This 'since GW4' conveniently includes Richarlison's suspension and Fraser's 18 point game. I'm not doubting that you've had better luck with Fraser but I do doubt that he's the better pick

I never owned Fraser. I missed that Rich missed GW5 and Fraser 18 so that is a big skew

            2. Pierce34
              • 8 Years
              5 years, 3 months ago

In addition, this isn't about Fraser as they weren't at the same price point when the season began and they're not now either 😉 Fraser is a good option too, though if I had to pick I'd go Richarlison.

That is utterly ridiculous. Bournemouth have abysmal fixtures. Everton have very promising ones. To just count up past points and think that's some kind of useful analysis is really about as simplistic as it gets.

No, you don't. You need to try to select which ones to have and which to swerve. Avoiding all of them is pretty unlikely to succeed.

Aubameyang, for example, isn't that highly owned compared to others. Not sure you are gaining much by losing him. Son ➡ D Silva might be more interesting though. Or Martial possibly, though his chance of starting every game is uncertain right now.

To Salah or not? Not keen on giving up on Auba (especially) or Kane atm.
Is it too much self harm not bringing Salah in now?

    Here is an 1 option.
    1. Kane + Felipe -> Jimenez + Salah (-4).

    Fabianski.
    Holebas, Digne, AWB.
    Sane, Hazard, Pogba, Rich, Felipe.
    Auba, Kane.
    Hamer, Kamara, Doherty, Bednarek.
    1ft, 0.1m ITB.

I don't think it's something you have to do, especially not immediately, your team looks pretty solid to me, I do marginally prefer Salah to Kane in the aggregate, but I'm not sure it's worth a hit and a probable downgrade of Anderson to Jimenez.

Son is so underrated. english media go raving about sterling all year but likes of Son get little recognition for his efforts

          Yeah.

I think Son right now may be the better player, but only by a little bit. On the other hand, Sterling is further away than Son is from his full potential.

I'd be very happy to have either one in my team. (in real life I mean)

honestly can't imagine son in the city team. he's too selfish. pep would go mad. if sterling was allowed to shoot as many times as son, he'd have more goals (seems silly but true). sterling is a great playmaker now, always setting up others, partly because it's what pep wants to see

    Fabianski, Button
    Wan-Bissaka, Alonso, Chilwell, Robertson, Digne
Felipe Anderson, Son, Pereyra, Pogba, Hazard
    Kane, Mitrovic, Kamara

    2FT 2.0 ITB

I did my WC for week 20. The plan was take out Salah for Hazard for two weeks. Didn't work out for me the first game and this week TBD.

Let's say Hazard does score 10+ against SOU, do I still continue with my plan? Unfortunately I'm 0.1 short for a straight Haz to Salah swap, so I have to make another change. Son would be the obvious one but his form. Alonso could also go depending on his SOU output.

What else could I do with this team?

    1. F_Ivanovic
      • 8 Years
      5 years, 3 months ago

you made a bad plan on several counts.

      1) Don't plan transfers 2 weeks away on WC. If you think a player is good, get them then regardless of bad fixtures (Ars was never that bad)
      2) If you are going to do that, make sure you account for price changes
      3) Hazard was the wrong choice to plan to get rid of. He's a season keeper.

Son is leaving after next GW so I would find a way to go Son > Salah.

Downgrade Alonso this week to TAA/Doherty then next week downgrade Robbo to the other option and go Son > Salah.

      1. noahzark22
        • 6 Years

I know, I messed up. Got cute and thought Haz vs CP and SOU would be better for me. Could still work out but it will be tough.

I don't see Hazard as a season keeper.

Salah and Hazard together makes my team a bit week unless I downgrade Kane to Auba. I'm not unwilling to do that but that's a lot more moving parts at the moment.

Was planning on Salah in for GW22 onwards (will obviously wait til next week), but, as is a popular question on here, don’t know which of Kane/Auba to drop for him. Here’s how I see it:

    Kane:
+ Striker in a freescoring Spurs side that should be able to keep scoring, you’d think, with their maintained good fixtures coming but with more rest in between them too.
+ Only player to deliver attacking returns in each of his last 10 starts - consistency, despite maybe not being overly explosive ie his back-to-back hattricks last season, yet.
    - Could be said that Spurs free flowing attack may take a hit when Son leaves, could dampen Kane’s output
    - Certainly a much easier swap to lose him right now, at least for myself, to do Salah Kamara in for Kane Snoddy, eg

    Auba:
    + League leading scorer
+ Gets loads of chances and seems to be able to grab returns even if it looks like he may not (eg today)
    - His returns have maybe been skewed more with the higher points towards the start of the season?
    - Playing in a weaker team?
    - Harder to do a straight swap to get Salah without taking at least one hit, or sacrificing someone more expensive as well like Sane for myself...

    Thoughts? (My team is linked)

Kane's been dropping back into the midfield a lot this year. Hasn't played well with Moura on the pitch as opposed to Son.

Auba has proven to be explosive even from the bench. Long term, I like arsenal's fixtures from now until the end of the season.

Slightly cheaper, I think Auba would be the way to go.

That being said, I swapped Auba for Kane two weeks ago and it's worked out better for me over the last two weeks at least.

What's everyone doing with Doherty/Jimenez next week? I know lots have benched Doherty/Jimenez points in the past - only happened to me once though (few times got points off bench)

But it is City away. Just like Liv away where I benched them both and they didn't return, I think it's the right choice to bench them again.

    Currently have:

    Wan B (WAT), Kiko (cry)

both starting ahead of them. I think Wan B is fine, Kiko though? He may have lost his place in which case I get Jimenez on anyway.

Salah has to come back for you. I even kept him for the MCI game. Too scared after I sold for a couple of GWs, including his hat trick. Wait and assess for city. I am thinking Sane at this stage. Goals too spread around and at least sane is cheaper than sterling and kun. Seriously contemplating going no premium forward and 5 killer mids
