Captains

Captain Sensible – Aubameyang can challenge Salah and Hazard

It looks like a three-way battle for the Gameweek 22 captaincy this weekend.

Fantasy Premier League managers are having to think big as we head into the first round of action for some time.

With the wealth of premium options all in decent form at the start of 2019, choosing the right captain could prove harder than ever.

We’re here to analyse the debate from all angles by looking at individual data, team attacking statistics and opposition defences.

Captain Poll

Mohamed Salah (£13.3m) is set to win the Gameweek 22 captain poll as, at the time of writing, he has 40% backing from the voters. The Egyptian faces Brighton on Saturday afternoon having scored 12 points in three of his last four Premier League outings. Salah’s ownership continues to rise again, now just over 42% after his excellent recent form, which is probably the reason why he has done so well in our poll. The Liverpool man seems to be returning to the ‘auto-captain’ status he ended the 2017/18 campaign in.

Some way behind Salah in second place is Chelsea midfielder Eden Hazard (£11.1m). It appears that 23% of our voters are confident the Belgian will deliver in Gameweek 22 after two consecutive blanks to round off the hectic festive fixtures. If we are to believe that Hazard tends to punish those who sell him after blanks, maybe he is indeed set for some attacking returns at home to Newcastle on Saturday. The Magpies have registered just one clean sheet in their last five away matches.

Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang (£11.4m) looks set to claim the bronze medal with his 11% backing ahead of Arsenal’s trip to West Ham. The Hammers still have just one clean sheet at home while Aubameyang has attacking returns in all but one away match against sides outside the top six this season.

Sergio Aguero (£11.2m) is the best of the rest with just 6% backing, the voters suitably afraid both of the Wolves defence and the form that Manchester City have shown in Premier League matches. As we discussed in our recent League Cup notes, a 9-0 win over League Cup opposition could mean little when the top flight action is resumed. Raheem Sterling (£11.3m) has just a third of Aguero’s support, with 2% of the vote, with Leroy Sané (£9.5m) even further behind on 1.25%.

Sandwiched amongst those options are Harry Kane (£12.6m) whose 2.49% share is reflective of a match against Manchester United, while Felipe Anderson (£7.4m) remains the most popular West Ham man. The Brazilian has garnered 1.9% of the vote at the time of writing.

Richarlison (£6.9m) is the only other player over 1% while Marko Arnautovic (£6.9m) and Son Heung-min (£8.8m) were close at the time of writing. The West Ham man on 0.95% and Spurs’ South Korean international with 0.83%.

With so many backing Salah, I feel this week could be good for a differential captain.

Brighton away could be tougher than people think.

    Obviously he could haul, though.

If they have anything about them, they'll go and beat Brighton comfortably.

15/15 wins against everyone outside the top 6 so far.

      This.
I haven't felt confident at all about Salah captain this week.
But last time i felt that way he got a hatrick against Bournemouth.

Correct. BHA will be tough to break down at the American Express Arena. They've only conceded two big chances over the last four which is tied with CHE for the fewest big chances conceded.

I wouldn't feel confident captaining him if I had him. Three shots in the last four and only one on target. Who else do you have?

One and only time I captained Auba was when he only got an 80th min assist (Huddersfield at home??) but this week and Cardiff in GW24 are prime opportunities to captain.

If he flops then a good excuse to sell to facilitate Hazard or Sterling move.

I am behind my ML rival 40 pts. I have Salah, Hazard, Auba and Kane after using my wildcard, but he only has Salah and Kane.

Should I play it safe, and cap Salah (Likely his cap), or cap Auba/ Hazard this week?

    Fabianski
    Robertson Luiz Alonso AWB
    Richarlison Anderson Hazard(c) Pogba
    Kane(v) Rashford

    McCarthy Lingard Bennett Success

2 free transfers. £1.9m in the bank.

My thinking right now is just to get Etheridge in for Fabianski, then Salah/TTA for Hazard/Alonso next week.

Anyone think I'm better getting Salah in this week?

  16. Dion D's Solo Shower
    • 6 Years
    5 years, 3 months ago

Appreciate the response I got earlier, but wouldn't mind a few other opinions on this:
    How's this WC team looking?
    Allison - Guaita
    TAA - Digne - Tomkins - Jonny - Bednarek
    Salah - Sterling - Pogba - Rich - Camarasa
    Kane - Jiminez - Kamara
    0.3 ITB.

I went Sterling over Sane, as I need a bit of differential to climb my ML, and downgrading Doherty --> Jonny and AWB --> Tomkins allowed this. I will be playing either a 4-4-2 or a 3-5-2 most GW's.
Do I need to worry about no Chelsea cover?

    1. Little fekirs
      • 5 Years
      5 years, 3 months ago

I would do Alisson to speroni and Tompkins to Robertson/VVD.

Current set up, on a minus 8

    Fab (Hamer)
    Digne TAA AWB (Shaw Doherty)
    Salah Sterling Pogba Pererya Hazard
    Auba Jimenez (Kamara)

    Possible wildcard team A:

    Guita (Button)
    Pereira TAA AWB Robertson (Bednarak)
    Salah Sane Pogba Hazard Camarasa
    Rashford Kane (Kamara)

*I could keep Aubam with money ITB for Kane next game week if I wildcarded.

    Possible Wildcard team B:
    Lloris (Button)
    Periera TAA AWB (Bednarak Doherty)
    Salah Sane Pogba Hazard Siggy/Rich
    Firmino Rashford (Kamara)

    My actual FPL team:

    Hennessey
    VVD - Digne - Pereira - WanBissaka
Pogba - Hazard (vC)- Salah (C) - Richarlison
    Auba - Rashford

    Fabianski - jimenez - doherty - billing.

    FT:1
    ItB: 0.1

    How to improve my team?
Richarlison (price dropped), Jimenez -> fraser, arnautovic (-4).
    other option?
    or wait?

    any suggestion??

Your team looks good. No need to take an unnecessary hit.

team is good and richy+jim> fraser, arny look like downgrades and not upgades.
just save transfer or downgrade fabianski to free up more cash for later

    Sorry for another question.....
    Shall I do either:
    A) Bennet to Alexander Arnold (Already have Robbo)
    B) Bennet to Digne
    C) Other / Save transfer
    Thanks

Why would you ditch Bennet before upcoming fixtures? he is a 4.1 enabler which is good to play gw23-29
Digne and TAA are good options but i would not ditch Bennet for them, look elsewhere

Is there a glitch in the FPLStats matrix this morning, Alonso has been at 99.9% to drop all week, and just looking now he's at -7% - without dropping.

Not sure, Salah has been set to rise since Sunday.

I know WCs throw a spanner in the algorithm, but to be 99% and now 7% surely isn't due to WCs.

Yeah its baffling, but not like we haven't seen it before.

Weighing up a three part Salah in switch over two weeks. Best route?

    A) Martial to Fraser/Pereya. Then Auba and Son to Salah and Rashford.
    B) Son to Pogba. Then Auba and Martial to Salah and Ings or Barnes.
    C) Martial to Richarlison. Then Auba and Son to Salah and up to 7.1 striker (Arnie, Wilson, Mitro).

    Patricio Hamer
    Alonso Digne WB Bennett Bamba
    Salah Hazard Richarlson Anderson Martial
    Kane Jiménez Kamara

    2 FT, 0.4 itb

    Anderson + Martial —> Sané + Brooks ?
