Captains

Captain Sensible – Salah the favourite for Gameweek 24

Mohamed Salah (£13.6m) looks to be the main captain candidate considered for Gameweek 24.

However, we wouldn’t be doing our jobs properly if we didn’t assess any potential alternatives to the Egyptian for the upcoming midweek Fantasy Premier League action.

In this latest Captain Sensible article, we’ll be analysing each player in the debate, as well as the prospects of their club and their opposition…

Captain Poll

Not surprisingly, Salah leads the captain poll for a second week running ahead of Leicester’s trip to Anfield. The 45% support for the Egyptian comes from two places, the key one being his form, with six double-figure hauls in his last eight matches. The fact that the Foxes’ out-of-sorts defence shipped four goals at Wolves in Gameweek 23 is also likely to be a huge contributing factor.

Salah’s lead is not quite as large as it was for the last round of FPL action, as Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang (£11.3m) sits in second place with a 20% share. The Arsenal man does present a compelling alternative to the Liverpool man as Cardiff come to the Emirates Stadium with the second-worst record on the road in the Premier League. In three away matches against top-six opposition this season, the Bluebirds have zero points with an aggregate score of 9-2. They look the perfect opponents for Aubameyang to continue his excellent home form, with goal involvements in four of his last five league matches at the Emirates.

Our voters may have cottoned onto the fact that Burnley are slowly making improvements, and are starting to represent tougher opposition than they did earlier in the campaign. Manchester United pair Paul Pogba (£8.7m) and Marcus Rashford (£7.7m) sit third and fourth in the poll but with just 7% and 5% shares respectively, despite their blistering recent form. The two players have scored 108 FPL points between them since Ole Gunnar Solskjaer took over at Old Trafford.

At 3% backing in fifth place, Alexandre Lacazette (£9.3m) looks like he’s being considered by some as an alternative to Aubameyang with Cardiff coming to north London.

Despite a little uncertainty over his likeliness of starts, Sergio Aguero (£11.3m) is the most popular Manchester City player in the Gameweek 24 captain poll, with 2.5% of the votes ahead of a trip to Newcastle. That may be because of his excellent scoring record against the Magpies, finding the net nine times in his last five Premier League matches against them.

The Argentinian forward sits ahead of Leroy Sané (£9.7m) and Raheem Sterling (£11.3m) who are on 2.12% and 1.37% respectively. Neither one of them got any minutes against Burton Albion or Burnley so they look the most likely to start at St James’ Park.

Sandwiched among the Manchester City assets is Eden Hazard (£11.0m), who has a 2.37% share of the votes. That’s ahead of a trip to Bournemouth, who have averaged 1.42 goal conceded per home match in 2018/19. The Belgian’s brand new strike partner Gonzalo Higuain (£9.5m) has entered the debate too with 1.31%, just a little ahead of Diogo Jota (£6.0m) on 1.25%.

Evening lads. Casting an eye over this lot, how do you think I'm shaping up for the forthcoming doubles etc?

    Fabianski
    Doherty Digne Kolasinac
    Sterling Salah Hazard Pogba Jota
    Rashford Firmino

    Button Wan-Biss Bennett Success

Note; Jota is currently Nasri - I intend to upgrade with the 0.5 I currently have in the bank.

    Thoughts appreciated lads, cheers

Auba. It's likely Aguero plays 90mins (or less) over the DGW.

You'll want Auba as a captain for GW 27 and he has a good run of fixtures. Auba tends to do well at home vs weaker opposition.

Prep for GW25 with 2FT this GW:

    Guaita -> Ederson
    Hazard -> Sane

    Yay or nay?

    Ederson
    Robertson Digne TAA
    Salah Sane Pogba Fraser
    Aubameyang Rashford Ings

    Bench: Doherty AWB Masuaku

Then Aubameyang -> Aguero for GW25 and having 4 DGW players?

Most people will be playing their Free Hit in GW32, so DGW32 isn't that important. It is DGW35 where the people who still have their WC try to make their move (WCing in GW34).

DGW35 will likely be the fixtures postponed from GW33. The Round 5 draw is not easy for the PL teams (other than City!) and if they all make it to Round 6 it increases the chance of more all PL ties which would reduce the blanks in GW35 further.

Plotting out the games, the logical one where Pep plays a changed team is Everton and could end up like ...

      Attackers
Fernandinho, KdB/Silva, Gundogan, B Silva, Mahrez, Jesus

Plenty good enough to see off Everton

For those with all chips left is this the consensus

    A. Four city / Everton in 25
    B. Get rid of a couple for 27
    C. Build up non blankers for 31 and 33.
    D. Free Hit 32
    E. Wildcard 34
    F. BB 35? Or TC 35?

When to use other chip ? Surely sane or sterling next week?

Think that's the optimum strategy as far as I can see!

      GW24 - Save/FT bring in City player
DGW25 - Bring in City player, ideally aim for 1-3 City players, max 1 Everton player. TC Sane makes sense for DGW as likely to play both while Mendy is injured
      GW26 - Remove City/Eve/Che/Bri player
BGW27 - Remove another City/Eve/Che/Bri player for BGW in GW
      GW28 - Buy Liverpool/Bournemouth/West Ham/Leicester assets
      GW29 - Buy Liverpool/Bournemouth/West Ham/Leicester assets
      GW30 - Buy Liverpool/Bournemouth/West Ham/Leicester assets
      BGW31 - Buy Liverpool/Bournemouth/West Ham/Leicester assets, blank GW
DGW32 - Free hit for DGW
BGW33 - Blank GW - good fixture for Liverpool, Leicester and Burnley
      GW34 - WC in prep for DGW35
DGW35 - Bench boost for DGW

    5. Hotdogs for Tea
      • 8 Years

That is probs the best strategy but I am not sure about all this getting City players in for the 25 double, getting players out for the 27 blank ... other players will get injured, lost form or need to be changed ... and that all adds up to lots of hits

Looking further ahead, assuming i go ahead with my planner transfers of Alonso/Fanderson/Hazard >> Laporte/Sane/Sterling (-4), i will end up with this heading into bgw27 with 2ft and 0.7m itb. Will have 8 starters.

    Fab -- Button
Doherty Schindler Holebas -- Digne* Laporte*
    Salah Pogba Rich* Sane* Sterling*
    Rashford Jimenez -- Kamara

So was thinking something like Laporte + Rich + Sane > Maguire + Puncheon + Auba(c) (-4) which will give me 11 starters (including puncheon).

is that viable? i could avoid the Alonso > Laporte move ahead of the dgw to save me 4 points but essentially its only a 2 point hit is laporte is nailed imo so doesnt make that much of a diff.

Alternatively, i could do Alonso >> Kola (good fix this gw) now and then Fanderson/Hazard >> Sterling/Sane (-4) next gw. that would still mean a hit but atleast give me an extra player in bgw27

    Fabianski
    Robertson / TAA* / Digne / Doherty
    Salah / Hazard / Pogba / Martial
    Rashford / Arnautovic

    Hamer // Ings / AWB / Camarasa

0.1 shy of Martial/Camarasa/Hamer > Sané/Jota/Ederson, over the course of the next 2 GWs.

As such, anyone better than Jota (under 6m), or should I do Fabianski > Ederson?

No. Same moves, just Hamer vs. Fabianski > Ederson.

I've currently got no Man City cover which i'm look to change. If you could pick two city players for the the matches before the blank who would you pick?

Is Bednarek a regular starter from now on or just filling in for an injury? I need to unlock 0.1 to upgrade to sterling and thinking of doing Bennet to him.

    Planning for DGW25:
I currently have only Sterling as city asset, and have Alli injured... I could either:

    a) Bring David Silva for Alli, and then switch him to Sonny on GW26-27, plus get city DF (probably Laport), OR
    b) Bring Sonny for Alli right away, and get just a city DF for the DGW

Spurs are looking awful, but all city mids have a big rotation question mark, and it may be the case that Sonny outscores them in this run (plus I really want him in the long term as well)...

Wild guess for next three City games

    Wingers to start:

    New: Sane and Sterling
    Ars: Sane and Mahrez
Eve: Sterling and Mahrez (Mendy perhaps fit by then?)

Nothing but a guess. But food for thought for people thinking about TC'ing Sterling/Sane. I would reconsider if both start vs new. If one of them don't, thats the player to go for imo if you MUST TC in 25
