The injury latest on Pogba and Martial after United’s winning run comes to an end

Manchester United’s 100% record under Ole Gunnar Solskjaer was brought to a halt on Tuesday evening but the result could have been much worse for the Red Devils, who fought back from 2-0 down to rescue a point against Burnley.

Paul Pogba continued his rich vein of form with a goal from the spot but there were suggestions after full-time that the Frenchman may have picked up an injury, despite him completing 90 minutes at Old Trafford.

We round up the injury latest as well as the main Fantasy talking points and salient manager quotes from United’s last-gasp draw.

Manchester United 2-2 Burnley

  • Goals: Paul Pogba, Victor Lindelöf | Ashley Barnes, Chris Wood
  • Assists: Jesse Lingard, Alexis Sanchez | Jack Cork, Ashley Westwood

Paul Pogba (£8.7m) registered his 11th FPL goal involvement in seven Gameweeks but owners of the game’s second-most-popular midfielder (the Frenchman sits in over 41% of Fantasy squads) face a nervous wait to see if there is any substance in the media reports that suggest he had picked up a groin injury in the 2-2 draw with Burnley last night.

Simon Peach and Jamie Jackson were among the journalists to write that Pogba had limped through the mixed zone after the match, with other reports claiming that the former Juventus midfielder was seen “holding his groin” as he walked down the tunnel at full-time.

The Metro also report that Pogba is set for a scan today.

It should be said that the speculation is purely based on quotes from reporters present at the match, however, with nothing official coming from the club or Ole Gunnar Solskjaer as yet.

The interim United boss did offer an explanation as to why Anthony Martial (£7.3m) had missed the visit of the Clarets, however:

He got a slight injury in training, hopefully he will be back for next weekend but no chance today.

Injury aside, Pogba once again racked up some impressive underlying stats despite a much-changed United side not fully hitting their stride.

The France international registered more penalty box touches, attempts on goal, shots in the box and efforts on target than any other player on show at Old Trafford, scoring from the spot after substitute Jesse Lingard (£6.7m) had been felled and then being denied a second goal by a fine Tom Heaton (£4.8m) save late on.

Solskjaer hasn’t been afraid to make changes to a winning United team since his appointment (not keeping the same starting XI for two matches in a row, albeit after having his hand forced in Gameweek 23) but this turned out to be one fixture too far, with his widespread tinkering resulting in a somewhat disjointed display.

Five alterations to the team were made in total, with Andreas Pereira (£4.5m) and Juan Mata (£6.2m) delivering sub-par displays in central midfield and on the right wing respectively.

Romelu Lukaku (£10.7m), so impressive when used on the flank against Arsenal in the FA Cup, was a cumbersome presence in a more central role and his deployment as an out-and-out striker meant that Marcus Rashford (£7.7m) was farmed out to the left – the England striker unsurprisingly delivering his least effective performance since Solskjaer took charge.

Rashford’s purple patch of FPL form thus came to a (hopefully) temporary end, with the United striker poking one glorious chance wide early on and later taking too long to finish after an excellent Pogba pass over the top.

Solskjaer defended his decision to play Lukaku as a central striker after the match:

Rom has done really well against Burnley before. He has scored and he is a handful. With Anthony injured, we thought that was the best option with Rashy out there. Of course, he got a couple of chances but today wasn’t his day.

The feeling that United missed the dynamism and link-up play of Lingard was evidenced after his game-changing introduction on 63 minutes, while the importance of the bustling Ander Herrera (£5.0m) in the central midfield three was underscored by Pereira’s disappointing display in his stead.

Pereira, indeed, was culpable for Burnley’s opening goal: the youngster being dispossessed by Jack Cork (£4.6m), who fed Ashley Barnes (£5.6m) to hammer the Clarets into a 1-0 lead.

Unsurprisingly, Solskjaer defended Pereira’s inclusion too:

No, it was the right decision to make. We had a couple of niggles and unfortunately he [Pereira] was involved in the first goal but that’s the whole team.

We played our way into trouble there instead of starting off with the forward pass we ended up back to the keeper and it’s just another thing we have to learn from.

Andreas will be better off for having this experience, no problem about that.

The hope for those who own Fantasy assets of Manchester United is that Solskjaer has perhaps learned a lesson about making widespread changes to his starting XI, particularly when a few of those concerned – i.e. Lingard and Herrera; Rashford in a central role – made the team tick in the first place.

United’s defence wasn’t overly tested by a Burnley side who mustered only six shots on goal but they were suspect whenever the Clarets did break, with Chris Wood (£6.2m) finding himself unmarked to nod home Ashley Westwood‘s (£4.5m) cross on 81 minutes.

Victor Lindelof (£4.9m), who bundled home the stoppage-time equaliser, was again the stand-out member of the United backline, with Phil Jones (£5.1m) continuing to look shaky alongside him.

While Burnley were indebted to some fine saves from Heaton, which included a superb re-adjustment from a Lukaku flick, they fully merited their point at Old Trafford.

We had highlighted last week how Sean Dyche’s side had look much-improved after their early-season struggles and that encouraging progress continued here, with Wood and Barnes posing plenty of problems in what has become a regular strike partnership in Dyche’s now-familiar 4-4-2.

This was Barnes’ tenth straight Premier League start and he has been joined by Wood in the starting XI in eight of them.

Continuity has been key in Burnley’s resurgence and Dyche named the same team that lined up in Gameweek 23, with the fit-again Johann Berg Gudmundsson (£5.5m) being held back on the bench.

Ben Mee (£4.6m) and James Tarkowski (£4.7m) are something approaching back to their best after a dip in form at the start of the campaign, which perhaps bodes well for clean sheets ahead given that the Clarets sit second in our Season Ticker for defence over the next five Gameweeks.

Dyche rhapsodised afterwards:

In the first half, particularly, a lot of our forward play was very good and the two centre-forwards were excellent, particularly in the first 60 minutes.

Behind them, I can’t really fault anyone. Some people question Jeff (Hendrick), but he plays all over the place and gets on with it every single time, without question. He accepts the role, drives on and delivers.

Dwight (McNeil) was good again and Westy and Corky are beginning to get that connection again.

The back four were resolute and strong and Tom, behind that, showed assuredness.

We have been building back towards what we can be. I think everyone can see that.

Suddenly, we are five unbeaten and very close to being five wins, not just three wins and two draws. A couple of decisions and who knows?

Manchester United XI (4-3-3): De Gea; Young, Lindelof, Jones, Shaw; Matic, Pereira (Lingard 62′) Pogba; Mata, Lukaku (Sanchez 67′), Rashford.

Burnley XI (4-4-2): Heaton; Bardsley, Tarkowski, Mee, Taylor; Hendrick, Cork, Westwood, McNeil (Gudmundsson 76′); Barnes, Wood.

If i believe lack of Pogs will affect Rashford returns vs leicester then i'll lose him

they then play palace who i think they will struggle to score against .

and then pool .....so that will be 3 games where i think i will get little or no returns from them both.

so only problem as mentioned by 'the 5% team' will be team value, but trying to get ahead of the curve.

I am also tempted to replace Pogba with a DGW player such as Bilva, Dilva, Rich or Siggy but that would mean losing .3 or even .4 million if I get Pogba back.

I am not sure if it is worth it given City players have high rotation risk, are not in top form and Everton's double fixtures are not awesome...

    Some points to note:

    - Sterling has 41 points in his last 10 GW's
    - Sane has 6 blanks in his last 9 appearances (and 4 blanks in his last 7 appearances)
    - City have just lost to Newcastle, their 4th league defeat in 9 league games
    - Kun has just played 90 minutes & has games Sunday, Wednesday, Sunday following that
    - All three of them have a schedule that reads - Arsenal, Everton, Chelsea, Blank in their next 4 GW's

    - Haz has Huddersfield home next
    - Auba has Huddersfield and Southampton in his next 3 (including prime captaincy in BGW27 with Mo away at man utd)
    - Son is back & has fixtures & price tag to die for

I honestly prefer Son, Haz, Auba over Sane, Sterling, Kun - has this DGW created undue hysteria & leading to questionable FPL decision making?

again, Sane has 1 blank in his last 4 - the only thing I'd worry about his him only playing once, but so are Son and Haz. I don't think that many people are doing Haz/Son to Sane anyway, and you're not exactly going to do Sane -> Son anyway

Many will be in a position of having money ITB & 2 FT's and a slot for a city attacker or two if they wish - important to make the decision with eyes open. Sane blanking in his last game against a bottom half newcastle... to add to the other 5 blanks in the 8 games prior to that... food for thought.

Pep could also very easily drop one of that front 3 to shake things up - very murky waters ahead, proceed with caution

one of Sane/Sterling could play both and score 12 in each game, they could also not. I certainly wouldn't be swapping Haz/Son for one of them, but players like Anderson are fair game imo - it's just a throw of the dice, doesn't mean it will work

Anderson > City may not make sense when the city attacker subsequently needs to be swapped to Haz or Son or Auba - its trying to determine whether its better to go straight from Anderson > Haz/Son & bypass city altogether that is a key decision... especially if planned hits are involved after the DGW which i suspect many are planning for

Agree! I was also pondering the same.

I have a question that no one answered and you seem to be rich in the stats department - although I do also need eye tests.

      How's Pascal Gross after injury?
His fixtures are delicious! and he's (with Duffy) the only proper Brighton prospect.

Is he on Pens? Corners? Freekicks? (nevermind what the site says here)
      Is he on advanced positions?

I have a feeling he will haul big soon, and dont want THAT to be when I get my answer that "yeh, he's good, look at his 16 pointer today..."

Gross is a fantastic differential shout - but he's hard to fit in at the minute - he could become a bandwagon overnight though as he has the fixtures, he's back fit now & he's shown in the past he can post 17 pointers. Definitely on the watchlist & going under the radar... 6.7 may be a wee bit steep though

Gross is looking awesome. If Pogba is out for more than a couple games I'm doing Pogba to Gross with my FT rather than Auba to Aguero hokey cokey I think.

      Some counter points:

      - Sterling has returned a goal or assist in 4 out of the last 5, you've conveniently set the cut off point there to fit your agenda... (Before those 10 games his 4 previous scores were 21, 2, 16,9). Let's get some context.
      - One of those appearances was 6 minutes long - again you've also set a cutoff point where before that he was performing consistently.
      - Using league games again as a judgement for form - they'd won 8 on the bounce prior to that - admittedly on this one they played Burton twice and Rotheram... But not sure what point you're making with this one.
      - Yep, Kun is a potential rotation risk - all city players relatively speaking are, but a City pick for one match with the potential of two is a good pick in my opinion.
      - That's actually over their next 3 gameweeks, (ARS & eve, CHE, blank)

      - Haz has Hud at home next, yep BUT his next three are (HUD, mci, blank) - I actually prefer City's fixtures.
      - Lots only sacrificing Auba for one week.
      - Son is a good pick but again I prefer Sane for two games than Son for one, after that I can move out if I need to.

If you can plan to not take hits and get players in that are playing twice in one week, why wouldn't you do that? This is an opportunity that if you don't have to take hits for then utilise it.

The hysteria is what you just posted, clear confirmation bias.

        Excellent counter points.
We need a consensus on how many games should be factored in to the term 'current form'. People do tend to pick the amount of games which suits their argument.

Well to counter the first counter point for example:

          - Sterling has returned a goal or assist in 4 out of the last 5, you've conveniently set the cut off point there to fit your agenda... (Before those 10 games his 4 previous scores were 21, 2, 16,9). Let's get some context.

That's not really good enough though is it? 5-6-5 for an 11.5m player? especially when it's 5-6-5 preceded by 0-2-6-2-2? 10 points vs Huddersfield is all well & good but then another 1 pointer v newcastle? Let's get some perspective and call a spade a spade - that is BAD form for an 11.5m player which is the point i was making, hopefully not too much confirmation bias or hysteria?

            I feel I've touched a nerve...

            - I have no agenda, I was simply countering your biased post to give some wider context, now - those reading can see the full story...

            - It depends on expectations really and what cut off point you use, but his form in FPL is 5.5 and is 6th best for midfielders. Jota and Mout above him from Wolves who have come up against two bad defences, Pogba and Salah - most own these two. OH and just Leroy Sane at the top.... As for Haz who you're a big advocate for - he's on the fourth page.

5.5 PPG over the season is 209 points, that's not far off where he needs to be...

I'm not saying to get city assets at all costs and in my team am not doing so, but let's stop the confirmation bias ay?

Ok so confirmation bias seems to be hot button - lets try this a different way, say in relation to Sterling for example.

Would you be happy with 41 points in 10 weeks for an 11.5m attacker?

No - but this isn't about what I'd be happy with it's about the facts and how we're using them/

I would have been if I owned him the 4 weeks prior to that or this 4 weeks just gone, it depends how you cut it, I don't even think he's a good option for my team (sane better value) but I'm just pointing out your bias.

                      Haha, i feel i've touched a nerve 🙂

Am I presenting facts to confirm a bias that avoiding Kun, Sane, Sterling in favour of Haz, Auba, Son? Well I have an opinion that they MAY be a better option, I'm undecided at the minute.

Are the facts any less true because of this? Of course not

Everyone is biased, it's an unavoidable reality of being a human being, let he without sin cast the first stone as they say 🙂

          - Using league games again as a judgement for form - they'd won 8 on the bounce prior to that - admittedly on this one they played Burton twice and Rotheram... But not sure what point you're making with this one.

FPL points are obtained in the league - there's no way i'm counting 3 games against burton, burton, rotherham for example. A 5-0 home cup win against burnley is nice. If you wanted to bring champions league into it - you could include the Lyon games? City are not looking as good as the team of last year is the point i'm making - 4 defeats in their last 9 FPL games is not something to be brushed under the carpet when making FPL decisions.

Again hopefully not too much confirmation bias or hysteria 😉

As I admitted, I agree that the 3 games against League 1 opposition should be more than taken with a pinch of salt...

You could have used a 4 in 10 figure there, where they won the game, or used won 8 of last 9 in all competitions. My point is that you simply used the single best period and limited games to confirm your bias - which funnily enough is confirmation bias.

            1. Maximus Bonimus Pointimus
              • 14 Years

I disagree - as we discussed, 8 wins in 9 in all competitions is irrelevant for FPL decision making so we need to park that one 🙂

And 4 defeats in their last 10 league games is (imo) pretty much as damning as 4 defeats in their last 9 league games, they are a more beatable team at the moment than they have been at any point in the last couple of seasons.

So overall, the point is - once again - for folks who are deliberating an important decision on whether to invest in a team - that team is in very questionable form. But they have the plus side of being the top scorers in the league, and are coming up against defences that can quite fairly be called shambolic on a bad day so who knows how it will go.

Ok, in need of some advice here boys! Have this squad available:

    Alisson
    AWB - Robertson - Doherty
    Salah - Pogba - Richarlison - Hazard
    Jimenez - Auba - Rashford

    Bench: Button, Camarasa, Digne, Yoshida

    2FT and 1.2M ITB

    Alternatives:
A: Aubameyang and Camarasa to Llorente and Sterling/Sanè
B: Aubameyang and Digne to Agüero and Laporte.
C: Any other ideas to implement more DGWers?

Leaning towards B as it would make it easier to make transfers post GW 25 with Son for Hazard and Auba for Agüero.. But not sure about Agüeros gametime for GW25.. Yuk

Definitely don't bring in 2 players given that you need to get rid of some of them for 27. Probably Haz to Sane/Sterling. I'd want Aub the week after and don't think it's worth doing the hokey cokey.

But I might just go without.
