The injury latest on Pogba and Martial after United’s winning run comes to an end

Manchester United’s 100% record under Ole Gunnar Solskjaer was brought to a halt on Tuesday evening but the result could have been much worse for the Red Devils, who fought back from 2-0 down to rescue a point against Burnley.

Paul Pogba continued his rich vein of form with a goal from the spot but there were suggestions after full-time that the Frenchman may have picked up an injury, despite him completing 90 minutes at Old Trafford.

We round up the injury latest as well as the main Fantasy talking points and salient manager quotes from United’s last-gasp draw.

Manchester United 2-2 Burnley

  • Goals: Paul Pogba, Victor Lindelöf | Ashley Barnes, Chris Wood
  • Assists: Jesse Lingard, Alexis Sanchez | Jack Cork, Ashley Westwood

Paul Pogba (£8.7m) registered his 11th FPL goal involvement in seven Gameweeks but owners of the game’s second-most-popular midfielder (the Frenchman sits in over 41% of Fantasy squads) face a nervous wait to see if there is any substance in the media reports that suggest he had picked up a groin injury in the 2-2 draw with Burnley last night.

Simon Peach and Jamie Jackson were among the journalists to write that Pogba had limped through the mixed zone after the match, with other reports claiming that the former Juventus midfielder was seen “holding his groin” as he walked down the tunnel at full-time.

The Metro also report that Pogba is set for a scan today.

It should be said that the speculation is purely based on quotes from reporters present at the match, however, with nothing official coming from the club or Ole Gunnar Solskjaer as yet.

The interim United boss did offer an explanation as to why Anthony Martial (£7.3m) had missed the visit of the Clarets, however:

He got a slight injury in training, hopefully he will be back for next weekend but no chance today.

Injury aside, Pogba once again racked up some impressive underlying stats despite a much-changed United side not fully hitting their stride.

The France international registered more penalty box touches, attempts on goal, shots in the box and efforts on target than any other player on show at Old Trafford, scoring from the spot after substitute Jesse Lingard (£6.7m) had been felled and then being denied a second goal by a fine Tom Heaton (£4.8m) save late on.

Solskjaer hasn’t been afraid to make changes to a winning United team since his appointment (not keeping the same starting XI for two matches in a row, albeit after having his hand forced in Gameweek 23) but this turned out to be one fixture too far, with his widespread tinkering resulting in a somewhat disjointed display.

Five alterations to the team were made in total, with Andreas Pereira (£4.5m) and Juan Mata (£6.2m) delivering sub-par displays in central midfield and on the right wing respectively.

Romelu Lukaku (£10.7m), so impressive when used on the flank against Arsenal in the FA Cup, was a cumbersome presence in a more central role and his deployment as an out-and-out striker meant that Marcus Rashford (£7.7m) was farmed out to the left – the England striker unsurprisingly delivering his least effective performance since Solskjaer took charge.

Rashford’s purple patch of FPL form thus came to a (hopefully) temporary end, with the United striker poking one glorious chance wide early on and later taking too long to finish after an excellent Pogba pass over the top.

Solskjaer defended his decision to play Lukaku as a central striker after the match:

Rom has done really well against Burnley before. He has scored and he is a handful. With Anthony injured, we thought that was the best option with Rashy out there. Of course, he got a couple of chances but today wasn’t his day.

The feeling that United missed the dynamism and link-up play of Lingard was evidenced after his game-changing introduction on 63 minutes, while the importance of the bustling Ander Herrera (£5.0m) in the central midfield three was underscored by Pereira’s disappointing display in his stead.

Pereira, indeed, was culpable for Burnley’s opening goal: the youngster being dispossessed by Jack Cork (£4.6m), who fed Ashley Barnes (£5.6m) to hammer the Clarets into a 1-0 lead.

Unsurprisingly, Solskjaer defended Pereira’s inclusion too:

No, it was the right decision to make. We had a couple of niggles and unfortunately he [Pereira] was involved in the first goal but that’s the whole team.

We played our way into trouble there instead of starting off with the forward pass we ended up back to the keeper and it’s just another thing we have to learn from.

Andreas will be better off for having this experience, no problem about that.

The hope for those who own Fantasy assets of Manchester United is that Solskjaer has perhaps learned a lesson about making widespread changes to his starting XI, particularly when a few of those concerned – i.e. Lingard and Herrera; Rashford in a central role – made the team tick in the first place.

United’s defence wasn’t overly tested by a Burnley side who mustered only six shots on goal but they were suspect whenever the Clarets did break, with Chris Wood (£6.2m) finding himself unmarked to nod home Ashley Westwood‘s (£4.5m) cross on 81 minutes.

Victor Lindelof (£4.9m), who bundled home the stoppage-time equaliser, was again the stand-out member of the United backline, with Phil Jones (£5.1m) continuing to look shaky alongside him.

While Burnley were indebted to some fine saves from Heaton, which included a superb re-adjustment from a Lukaku flick, they fully merited their point at Old Trafford.

We had highlighted last week how Sean Dyche’s side had look much-improved after their early-season struggles and that encouraging progress continued here, with Wood and Barnes posing plenty of problems in what has become a regular strike partnership in Dyche’s now-familiar 4-4-2.

This was Barnes’ tenth straight Premier League start and he has been joined by Wood in the starting XI in eight of them.

Continuity has been key in Burnley’s resurgence and Dyche named the same team that lined up in Gameweek 23, with the fit-again Johann Berg Gudmundsson (£5.5m) being held back on the bench.

Ben Mee (£4.6m) and James Tarkowski (£4.7m) are something approaching back to their best after a dip in form at the start of the campaign, which perhaps bodes well for clean sheets ahead given that the Clarets sit second in our Season Ticker for defence over the next five Gameweeks.

Dyche rhapsodised afterwards:

In the first half, particularly, a lot of our forward play was very good and the two centre-forwards were excellent, particularly in the first 60 minutes.

Behind them, I can’t really fault anyone. Some people question Jeff (Hendrick), but he plays all over the place and gets on with it every single time, without question. He accepts the role, drives on and delivers.

Dwight (McNeil) was good again and Westy and Corky are beginning to get that connection again.

The back four were resolute and strong and Tom, behind that, showed assuredness.

We have been building back towards what we can be. I think everyone can see that.

Suddenly, we are five unbeaten and very close to being five wins, not just three wins and two draws. A couple of decisions and who knows?

Manchester United XI (4-3-3): De Gea; Young, Lindelof, Jones, Shaw; Matic, Pereira (Lingard 62′) Pogba; Mata, Lukaku (Sanchez 67′), Rashford.

Burnley XI (4-4-2): Heaton; Bardsley, Tarkowski, Mee, Taylor; Hendrick, Cork, Westwood, McNeil (Gudmundsson 76′); Barnes, Wood.

Starting Robertson, Wan Bissaka, and Shaw.
Transfer him out for Bednarek prior to Saints vs Cardiff in the BGW.

I've got Salah TC to come in tonight - I just think he's the best player in the league so why not use it when he's in tremendous form. DGW25 is the other consideration as I'm playing chips in other DGW's but Salah is just better IMO.

The only thing I was nervous of was a potential Chelsea random DGW, again though, Haz for maybe 2 games late on in the season when his focus is on real and Chelsea's focus is on EL vs Salah for 1 game at his best...

Let's see what I say about this in a few hours though 😀

For those not TC this week. Kind of noticed that gw38, one can usually target a player that hauls much easier than other weeks. With the fact that the template is shaping up in such a way we wouldn't be able to TC in any dgw and assuming Chelsea doesn't have that triple gw, what do we consider the ideal time for a TC?

For me, looking at Salah at home to Wolves gw38. Title wrapped up, champagne football, playing in front of the Kop, wolves possibly using fringe players and not bothering about defending could add up to a decent haul. Another option is gw 36 i think at home to Huds if they as i think are relegated by then

    1. El-Kloppico

If title is wrapped up, its silly to consider Salah. Even more if they're still in CL.

Also failed to add i assume they will be out of CL as well. On that last day, goals seem to fly in at a higher rate in all games. If title is done, Salah and co will chase records especially if they are not in CL. May be a little more gung ho going forward as well

Some of my thoughts on the DGW as a Non City owner. The Newcastle game reinforced my views if anything. The defence is a no go and not worth it. Laporte and Ederson are the two i think get 180 minutes. Both have poor potential for anything higher than 6 points. Laporte hhas next to none goal, assist or even bonus threat and Ederson is allergic to saves (not his fault though). They look shaky defensively. Like i said previously, i think they concede in at least one game, probably both. Unless Mendy miraculously comes back for both games, not worth it. Danilo won't play 180 minutes. Walker is too expensive for his output.

Jesus i think starts one game. Whether he starts with Aguero is another matter. I think Jesus starts the Everton game and Aguero the City game but both get some minutes in each so not sure if its worth swapping out Auba especially considering he could score against City's porous defence and he plays gw27.

Sane remains the best option for me. Think he gets the most minutes. Sterling has the highest ceiling but i do worry about him playing 90 minutes yesterday and jury is still out on his performance against big teams. All that said, let's not forget they have imo still the best attack in the league and are facing two mediocre defenses. Lack of gw 27 hurts especially if you are using a hit to take out Haz or Mo.

Tl;dr- Get and captain Sane if you want a City asset. Sterling and Aguero are good buys but only if you have 2FT

      Nail. Head.

Not sure about Jesus though, I wouldn't be surprised either way. For me swapping out Auba is logical given his record against the top sides - though he could have easily scored in the Chelsea game recently (missed a sitter).

Yeah Auba seems to always get that big chance against the top teams except maybe Liverpool. City defense lookimg shaky. It's weird. They don't concede chances but when they do, its usually a goal. Add in the fact he plays at home to Soton gw27. I can see him easily outscoring Aguero over the next 3 gameweeks. Think he also has Hud in between while Kun has Chelsea

I just have 1FT this week and 1FT next week but don't really have any other issues and can get 11 out for all the blanks.

My 2 FT's last week (Sane & Ederson in) left me with 0.2 ITB to make the change though so it's planned.

think Sane is also the most owned in active teams if that makes a difference. I'll be surprised if Jesus and Mahrez don't start at least one each - agree on the defenders, although Danilo would be interesting if Mendy is unlikely to play (still Delph and Zinch lurking though annoyingly) as he does have decent attacking threat

For me alot hinges on Hazard's performance tonight, as taking him out for a home game against Hudds unnerves me especially given City's performance yesterday.

If he does well, I'll likely go for something like Kun + Moutinho for Auba and Snoddy, then either ditch Kun in 26/27 for Auba. Only lose 0.2M TV doing that.

But then Haz could easily rack up a big score against Huddersfield, maybe a 16 pointer. Cap there and that's 32 points. If you take him out for a hit as some are doing, that means Sane has to score at least 20 points against both Everton and Arsenal to break even.
That is possible and Haz could also do poorly but don't like the odds particularly as i think sane wont get the full 180

I see where you're coming from but City don't have a porous defence, before last night they'd kept 6 clean sheets in a row, albeit against weaker opposition.

I also think it's possible Aguero starts both of the next 2. City need their big players to stand up and be counted now. It's going to be a huge week for them, and I think Pep knows how important a legend like Aguero is to the team. Sane, Sterling, David Silva etc are all strong options as they can do damage even from the bench.

The way I see it is the current champions and the best attacking team in the league have a DGW - to ignore them completely is crazy IMO, but thats what makes this game great - its all opinions.

Burton twice, Roterham, Huddersfield (who can't score against anyone), Burnley and a Wolves side reduced to 10 men early on. Their defence like i said is a weird one. Don't concede too many shots or chances but they concede goals still and once they do, Ederson and Laporte aren't giving you anything extra most likely

Going forward they should score well but who do you think is assured of heavy minutes in both? Aguero is injury prone and after the Everton game is Chelsea. I think pep certainly prefers Kun for the bigger games in this scenario

Yep I agree, weaker opposition. I don’t think Laporte is a bad shout for the next 2, but long term I expect more from my premium defenders than what he gives you, in fact I posted about this earlier in the season, think it was around when Mendy got injured first time round.

I think Aguero, Sterling, Sane and D Silva should all see plenty of gametime over the next few matches. All strong options IMO.

Of which i should add Mounie had an absolute clear cut chance which he missed. Everton and Arsenal while atrocious defensively are much better going forward imo than all these teams previously mentioned considering 10 man Wolves as well.
It was so easy for Newcastle to breach them and while they could score 3 or 4 in both games, I'll be shocked if they kept back to back CS

Bernardo Silva - I won't be buying but is there some merit if people need a differential? Low minutes the past two games but city's performances appear to have not been at the best, will Pep see him as the catalyst for a mini revival? Pep loved him at the start of the season.

I left for a small bit a 2or3 years ago but back on here a fair bit. still not enough to be a regular.

It's very punty - Bilva is not a great FPL player at the best of times especially given the alternatives at & below his price.

If you time it right he could pop up with a G or A of course if he starts, but differentials can be a dodgy path to go down. Jota/Fraser/Pereyra, even Milivojevic have much more going for them as differentials if going down that path in my (biased 🙂 ) opinion

      1. greghammer95

Oh it's very punty, but for just one week it could be genius.

Agree, I think Jota looked good last night, Gross coming back to form the forgotten man of last season - long term much better options around.

Ay - for one week only we're allowed to go a little bit mental. STOP pooping on the DGW 😉

            Also - I DON'T EVEN THINK HE'S A GOOD OPTION 😀

Hence punty. It’s all relative to your ML positions and overall aims. For me if I can finish in the top 1% in the world (60,000 ish) I’m a happy man. I don’t think I’m in the top 1% in the world of anything else I do.

    Getting Rich for the DGW.

But now deciding on City... (Sterling out of reach)
    1) Dilva
    2) Sane
    3) Bilva

PS - Going cheaper allows for Rich > Son in gw26.

Sane could also haul in both matches. TC is forgotten now, but if Salah scores only one and Sane gets 3-4 goals and assists, it is a scary situation. But so is Salah hat trick.

Agree with many here that Kun may only play once next week, so I am leaning against bring him in for Auba.

Personally I'm waiting to see Higuain this evening - if he clicks with Hazard they way I think he will, next week vs HUD could be a very interesting differential.

Auba to Higuan and back again could be a cheeky alternative to the Aguero hokey cokey.

Though doing that for just one game is risky, at least with Aguero he might get two...

Might actually bring in Jesus for Auba due to cheaper price and likelihood he will play easier game against Everton. This means I can swap Martial for Sane at same time and leave alone hazard for Huddersfield game.
