Sane benched but Aguero and Sterling start in City’s first DGW fixture

The first of two Manchester City matches in Double Gameweek 25 kicks off at 16:30 GMT this afternoon, with Arsenal the visitors to the Etihad.

Leroy Sane (£9.8m) has been benched for only the second time in 13 Gameweeks, though Raheem Sterling (£11.3m), Sergio Aguero (£11.4m), David Silva (£8.5m), Bernardo Silva (£7.6m) and Kevin De Bruyne (£9.7m) all start.

Danilo (£5.1m), John Stones (£5.2m), Riyad Mahrez (£8.3m) and Gabriel Jesus (£10.0m) are among the substitutes for the hosts.

Sane was the second-most-popular triple captaincy choice of this Gameweek, with 26,429 Fantasy managers using this chip on the German winger.

Aguero and Sterling were the first and third-most-popular choices for the triple captaincy this weekend.

City still have Everton to face at Goodison Park on Wednesday, of course.

Pep Guardiola’s formation is still to be determined, with City’s line-up missing an orthodox left-back and seemingly set to use Bernardo in a wide role.

Alexandre Lacazette (£9.3m) and Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang (£11.2m) are once again paired up front for Arsenal today, with Unai Emery reverting to a wing-back system for the trip to Eastlands.

Mesut Ozil (£8.0m) is joined by Denis Suarez (£6.5m) on the away bench, with Laurent Koscielny (£5.4m) returning from injury in defence.

Granit Xhaka (£5.3m) misses out with a slight groin problem.

Manchester City XI (4-3-3, tbc): Ederson, Walker, Laporte, Otamendi, Fernandinho, Gundogan, Silva, De Bruyne, Bernardo, Sterling, Aguero.

Arsenal XI (3-4-3): Leno, Koscielny, Mustafi, Monreal, Kolasinac, Guendouzi, Torreira, Lichtsteiner, Iwobi, Lacazette, Aubameyang.

Strange goings on at the top of the tree so far this GW.

The world number 2 moved up a place yesterday despite captaining Digne.

The world number one captained Sane over Aguero but at this stage probably stays at the top with Robbo and Salah left to play.

The number 10 in the world has scored 91 points so far and jets up the leader board.

Aguero not featuring in many teams at the top.

What’s everyone’s opinion on this ‘captaincy has no skill’ argument?
I personally think it’s complete bollox, it adds a whole new factor to the game. Firstly, it’s a factor to consider when picking your 15, how many big hitters to get... without it I think our squads would all be much more balanced and similar. Secondly, you pick the player you think will score highest each gameweek, there’s a reason you didn’t captain your GK, there is just as much skill in captaincy as there is in any other FPL decision.

It's a skill to choose best Captain.

This is the thing, I’m not even claiming to be good at selecting a captain, I chose Sané this week! I just object to this notion that it’s complete luck.

Luck is a huge factor in captaincy & fpl in general. For example Aguero’s hand goal & Salah’s penalty dives in the past

      1. Tev
        • 6 Years
        5 years, 2 months ago

I’m not debating that there’s luck involved in FPL, there’s an absolute abundance. But captaincy hardly increases it if at all, I personally think it increases the skill factor.

    5. F_Ivanovic
      • 8 Years
      5 years, 2 months ago

Ofc there is some skill in picking a captain but in general it adds a lot of variance to the game and it's possible to continuously get unlucky despite picking good options on paper.

However, I think luck/variance is a key part of what makes FPL the top fantasy game - it does enough to keep casual players interested whilst still allowing experienced managers to generally perform well over the course of a season.

      1. Tev
        • 6 Years
        5 years, 2 months ago

That’s seems a well balanced argument, I don’t think most experienced managers would advocate the removal of captaincy though, they’ve probably benefited from it much more than any casual .

Was Sane(c) a bad pick this GW? Was Kane(c) against Cardiff at Wembley a bad pick?

Both seem bad now, but that is with hindsight. The process of choosing those (c) was good, but it led to bad outcomes. A FPL season is not long enough for the variability that comes with such picks to even out.

There is no process, which has a 100% good outcome rate. So even a good process can lead to bad outcomes.

I made both of those decisions. I want captaincy to remain. There is a huge amount of luck in FPL, of course, but I don’t think captaincy is anything special.

I'm not a fan tbh, it's not always down to luck and I agree with you that it can make the difference with similar teams but in instances like today where it was a flip of the coin on which city players to pick, that's luck, and yes I'm a bit sour cos I didn't choose Kun lol.

If they both played and Sane blanked that would be more down to skill but if they get dropped that's surely bad luck which can't be helped.

      1. Tev
        • 6 Years

You genuinely would prefer the game without captaincy?

When I get it wrong, yes, lol

I think the only good thing about it is that it benefits regular players long term as the casuals might forget to change Captain.

            • 6 Years
            5 years, 2 months ago

I don’t think that’s the only good thing about it- just like in all part of FPL I think those who analyse the stats most/ plan most in terms of fixtures will end up coming out best.

It’s adds a huge layer of luck. Managing a team week to week is mostly skill but captaining the one of your players that scores the most is mostly luck.

        • 6 Years
        5 years, 2 months ago

Managing your team week to week includes captaincy... I am yet to be convinced that it is anything special. Is it luck choosing who to bench?

There's a lot of luck involved for individual gameweeks, but over the course of a season you need skill in terms of analysing stats and evaluating a given fixture.

It adds a crucial dimension to the game. If I couldn't captain Aguero, I wouldn't have made the exhilarating Aubameyang to Aguero move, and that kind of move is why many of us love FPL.

    Conflicting responses on Twitter:

I have Aguero as VC and Sane as C. If Sane doesn’t play against Arsenal, but plays against Everton, will he be captain for the whole GW25?

    FPL rules say:
One of my players was scheduled to play twice in one Gameweek, but only played in one match. Why wasn’t he substituted in the match he didn’t play?

If a player plays any minutes in any scheduled matches in a Gameweek, then he does not qualify for an automatic substitution.

The same rule applies to captains. If your captain only plays in one of the two matches, he will not be replaced as captain in the match he doesn’t play.

Had Ederson last game of the season last year. He picked up a yellow card from the bench -1 pts but was substituted out for Fabianski, who if I remember rightly saved a penalty. This won me my mini league. Cool story.

For some context, I’m on 64 with Salah, Robertson, Richarlison, Sané (c) left so you can all feel smug!

      90 - 4 + Aguero(c) + Sane + Salah, despite selling Hazard - really hoping for the 100!

    B) Hazard, Ings, Richarlison, Luiz to Aubameyang, Son, Kolasinac, 4.4m mid (-8)

Been at work all day. Catching up. Presumably my Sané captain covered Aguero and Sterling ok?

With the rank drop I'm having this week, I'm giving up on this season. Think it's time to take a few chances. Any suggestions for this team? 1FT - £0.7 itb)

      Alisson
      Robertson - Wan-B - Doherty
      Sané - Salah (C) - Richarlison - Pogba
Rashford - Jiménez - Aubameyang (VC)
      (Hamer - Laporte - Puncheon - Balbuena)

That’s fine, good in fact, if you want a bit more fun then maybe go a bit less template, starting with Auba (C).

I'm seriously considering it, but as an Arsenal fan I see every week how bad the team is playing. Far from the quality of Liverpool and Salah, for example.

              It's a difficult one this…

Honestly can't see how. Everyone have the same players, so a green arrow will only make a small one.

Congrats to all the AgueroTC’s. I didn’t want to do the auba aguero Auba thing. Hopefully saving a FT this week and Auba getting a hat trick next week will restore the balance.

Sterling TC for me. 10pts so far so not all bad.
