Cardiff win as Bournemouth away form bodes well for Liverpool assets

Fantasy Premier League managers disappointed by Liverpool assets in recent weeks should be encouraged by the way Bournemouth played at Cardiff in Gameweek 25.

The Cherries followed up their headline-grabbing 4-0 win over Chelsea with a poor performance at the Cardiff City Stadium.

However, it was the perfect result for the Bluebirds given recent events concerning Emiliano Sala.

The budget options making a name for themselves, as well as Bournemouth’s shortcomings, are the focus of this latest Scout Notes article.

Cardiff 2-0 Bournemouth

Goals: Bobby Reid x2 (£5.2m)

Assists: Aron Gunnarsson (£4.4m)

Oumar Niasse (£5.0m) and Bobby Reid (£5.2m) were the stars of the show as Cardiff earned an emotional victory over Bournemouth on Saturday evening. It was the first match played at the Cardiff City Stadium since the disappearance of Emiliano Sala and the occasion seemed to bring out the best in the Bluebirds’ players. It was a thoroughly deserved victory for the Welsh side, who made the most of their possession, registered more shots in the box and efforts on target than the Cherries and outscored them for expected goals (xG) too (2.07 to 0.51).

The Cardiff City Stadium is starting to become a key location for the Bluebirds’ survival hopes. Of their last eight matches in front of their own supporters, the only teams to have beaten them are Spurs and Man United, with the other six games, all against opponents outside the top six, handing them five wins and one draw. In those non-top six encounters, Cardiff have averaged 1.8 goals per game. With Watford, Everton and West Ham all set for visits to south Wales in the next five Gameweeks, there will be plenty more opportunity for Bluebirds assets to impress Fantasy managers.

Reid took the headlines with his brace, as he continues in his efforts to hold down a place in the Cardiff first team, dropping into a number 10 role of late. This was his third start in five matches, but his second in a row. After his excellent performance against Bournemouth, it would be hard for manager Neil Warnock to bench him for the Gameweek 26 trip to Southampton. The local press are already claiming Reid should be one of the first names on the team-sheet after recent displays. One of his two goals was from the penalty spot after a Steve Cook (£4.4m) handball, indicating he actually has a decent position in the pecking order. We believe that the still absent Victor Camarasa (£4.6m) is still the designated penalty taker for now but the fact that Joe Ralls (£4.6m) was on the pitch when Reid opened the scoring, indicates the former Bristol City man is at least second.

Despite Reid’s goals, it was Niasse who earned the most praise from Warnock and the local press at full-time. He led the line for the third match in a row since signing on loan from Everton, his runs into the channels and ability to act as a focal point invaluable to Cardiff. Both of those are something that Warnock’s men have been in need of for some time. Niasse was described as another player who should be among the first on the team sheet for Gameweek 26 by Cardiff’s local press. He had more efforts on goal than any player in the match but was also joint-top for chances created too. While he is yet to find any attacking returns this season, Niasse is one to watch based on this performance.

“Oumar needed a bit of love and since he’s been here I don’t think he’s ever worked so hard. He smiles at me when I shout at him, but he’s given us another dimension. It makes you think we’ve played two and a half years without a striker, it’s not bad going really!” – Neil Warnock

Warnock may be faced with a selection dilemma in midfield now, given the form of Reid especially. Ralls and Aron Gunnarsson (£4.4m) played the deeper holding roles against Bournemouth, but could both drop to the bench for Gameweek 26. Harry Arter (£4.9m) was ineligible to face his parent club but his bustling energy in central midfield has not really been matched by either Ralls or Gunnarsson this season. Meanwhile, Camarasa is still missing through injury but Warnock is optimistic about a return soon. Where he will slot back in will be interesting to see. Many have claimed that the Spaniard has been Cardiff’s best player this season, having operated at number 10 before Reid’s recent run of form. Warnock will have to decide which of the two holds that berth, with Camarasa also capable of playing deeper in the 4-2-3-1.

“We didn’t have Harry Arter or Victor (Camarasa), so we were quite bold in the team selection, I thought we were quite positive in how we set up.” – Neil Warnock

Predicting who will play on the left wing for Cardiff is becoming more difficult with each passing Gameweek. Having not started since Gameweek 21, Josh Murphy (£4.8m) was back against Bournemouth, with Junior Hoilett (£5.0m) getting the nod for the Gameweek 23 defeat at Newcastle, the last time Cardiff played 4-2-3-1.

“It was good to see (Josh) Murphy back in the swing of things.” – Neil Warnock

The right flank looks a little simpler if Niasse is to make the centre-forward position his own. Callum Paterson (£5.0m) has been deployed on the right of midfield for the last two matches in which Warnock has used the 4-2-3-1 formation. He looks likely to keep his place there for now.

The clean sheet kept on Saturday evening was Cardiff’s seventh of the season, an impressive total considering their newly-promoted status. Only Liverpool (13), Chelsea (11), Manchester City (10), Tottenham (10) and Crystal Palace (nine) have recorded more this season than the Bluebirds.

“So to be disciplined like we were and get a clean sheet – our seventh clean sheet which for a relegation-threatened side is pretty good – we had all the ingredients. It was almost like we couldn’t be beaten, the crowd would not let us be beaten. It was fabulous being stood on the touchline.” – Neil Warnock

This latest shutout was particularly impressive considering that Cardiff are still without key centre-back Sean Morrison (£4.7m), who is out until March with an abdominal problem. Bruno Ecuele Manga (£4.4m) continues to deputise for him alongside Sol Bamba (£4.6m), opening up the right-back spot for Lee Peltier (£3.9m), who has started the last three in a row. Until Morrison comes back from injury, it means we do have another starting £3.9m defender in the game.

Bamba and Manga looked particularly impressive against Bournemouth, emerging as the game’s leaders for Clearances, Blocks and Interceptions (CBI) scoring 14 and 11 respectively. Only two players have achieved higher CBI scores than Bamba in Gameweek 25 so far.

Meanwhile, Bournemouth continue to struggle when not playing at the Vitality Stadium. After issuing a strong statement with their 4-0 thrashing of Chelsea in Gameweek 24, they were virtually ineffectual against Cardiff. In fact, the Cherries’ last points away from home came in Gameweek 10 when they were 3-0 winners at Fulham, all the way back in October. They have now lost the last seven road trips in a row by a score of 20-3, conceding an average of 2.9 goals per game in that run. Up next for Eddie Howe’s men: a Gameweek 26 trip to Anfield and Liverpool.

“It’s hugely disappointing as we really wanted to build on what we’ve done. We thought the Chelsea game could’ve been a turning point for us and we’re really searching for consistency. We’ve never felt like we’ve got that, we go away from home and we feel really disappointed today. There’s time to reflect and focus on Liverpool but to sort out our inconsistency is the biggest challenge. We can’t play like we did on Wednesday then play like we did today – the mental side was a factor today.” – Eddie Howe

Bournemouth are obviously struggling in the face of key players missing, with Callum Wilson (£6.4m) absent for the second match in a row with a knee problem and David Brooks (£5.1m) recently joining him on the sidelines. The Welshman is likely to be out for three weeks with an ankle injury.

“David (Brooks) injured his ankle scoring against Chelsea. It was a strange injury, he didn’t feel it kicking the ball but felt in the celebration that he injured himself. He’ll be missing for around three weeks we think.” – Eddie Howe

In their absence, Bournemouth’s remaining key players did not particularly impress, after promising so much. In the four matches prior to Gameweek 24, only Paul Pogba (£8.6m) had more shots in the box than Josh King (£6.4m), who mustered just two in Cardiff. Making his Premier League debut up front, Dominic Solanke (£4.7m) did not register a single effort. Meanwhile, Ryan Fraser (£6.1m), usually a consistent creator, played just one key pass in the whole 90 minutes. Repeat performances from these players and their Bournemouth team-mates in Gameweek 26 could help Liverpool defensive and attacking assets reward patience in them.

The back four remained unchanged for Bournemouth from the quartet who kept out Chelsea midweek, while Artur Boruc (£3.9m) continues to keep Asmir Begović (£4.4m) out of the team.

Cardiff City XI (4-4-1-1): Etheridge; Bennett, Bamba, Ecuele Manga, Peltier; Murphy (Hoilett 69′), Ralls, Gunnarsson, Paterson; Reid (Bacuna 86′); Niasse (Zohoré 83′).

Bournemouth XI (4-4-1-1): Boruc; A Smith, Aké, S Cook, Clyne; Fraser, Surman, Gosling (Lerma 69′), Stanislas (Ibe 62′); King; Solanke (Mousset 62′).

Wolves vs Shrewsbury - determines whether Wolves could be in line for any blanks
WBA vs Brighton - determines whether Brighton could be in line for any blanks
Everton vs Man City - second game of DGW25

        Wolves - yes.
Brighton - 50/50. They aren't taking it seriously and are away from home this time. Results in the PL didn't go their way with Cardiff winning meaning the gap between them is only 5pts now.

      Brighton-Cardiff

      GW33 games become available:

Think I would consider holding on to Sane as he's your only City player.

Like 2. (but dont ship felipe before fulham at home!) or possibly 4. As for the cheap mids, you dont have to spend all your money on mid, just get a cheap one and bank the cash. Just make sure they play gw31.

Which combo do you think does better over next few GWs?
They are essentially different combos of losing Kun/ Kamara/ Jota/ Sané/ Laporte for Auba/ Jimi/ Son/ cheap def:

      A) Kun, (Kamara), Sané, Jota, Laporte
      B) Auba, (Kamara), Sané, Jota, Laporte -4pts
      C) Kun, (Kamara), Sané, Son, 4.3def -4pts
      D) Kun, Murray, Son, Jota, Laporte -4pts
      E) Auba, Jimi, Sané, Jota, 4.8def -8pts
      F) Auba, (Kamara), Sané, Son, 4.4def -8pts
      G) Kun, Jimi, Son, Jota, Kola/ Lindelof -8pts

Hope this isn't too confusing - was a different way to phrase the questions re transfers!
Reading it back - I just hope I get a single response 😆

      Fabianski.

      Digne, Doherty, Holebas.

      Pogba, Salah, Rich, Sané.

      Firmino, Auba, Rashford.

      Hamer, Bednarek, Camarasa, AWB.

      2ft, 0.6m ITB

      1. Sane/Rich/Firmino -> Son/Mane/Jimenez (-4).

      2. Rich/Firmino -> Son/Jimenez.

      3. Rich/Firmino-> Felipe/Jimenez.

      4. Rich -> Felipe (Keep Firmino for Bournemouth, save the other FT)

Thinking 4 might be best afterall for now. Firmino is rubbish but he has as good a chance as Jimenez to do well next GW considering fixture + it leaves me in a good position regarding DGW strategy

Why do I hear other and don't stick with my guts.

Was about to get Aguero and instead I got Auba.

      Dropped down to 50k.

I Hope auba will pay off with that schedule ahead

Ah, been down that road myself. A lot of the season remains, you’ll make it up! I’ve found that asking less for advice on transfer and listening more to podcasts help with my own decision-making. Best of luck, Auba will come good!

Who out of the relegation candidates will make a big jump and hit form? There's always one team that performs well towards the end of the season.

Anyone from Huddersfield, Fulham, Cardiff, Burnley, Southampton, Newcastle, Palace and Brighton could be involved.

Huddersfield are down imo, Fulham could produce a revival, maybe with Mitrovic as the talisman

All the others are neck an neck.

If on wildcard, which talismen would you pick out of those teams?

Don't take this the wrong way, not saying this in order to put you down, but the plural of talisman is talismans. (word refers to an object, not a man, and is way overused in football for some reason)

But to answer the question - I hope Fulham, as I really like Ranieri. Southampton, Burnley, Newcastle, Palace and Brighton are all safe in my opinion. (which of course poses a problem for Fulham, haha!)

I can't see Burnley, Brighton or CPL relegated, they are a class above the other teams you mentioned imo. Rondon, Mitrovic and maybe Cairney, Redmond are possible decent picks. SOU have a nightmare run soon but the last 6 GWs or so look great for them.

Fulham in attack (Babel, Mitrovic), and Newcastle in defence i d say. Ranieri must have known that they wont keep cs so has to be as attacking as he can. Brighton, Burnley, Sou should also stay but wouldnt invest in any of their players since the points are shared. Perhaps Duffy, Barnes, Ward - Prowse if i had to choose one from each team. HUD are just not good enough and Cardiff will probably not stay but again their points are shared. They dont even have one totally nailed player apart from the GK and the defenders. Good luck with your choices

Crystal Palace defensive unit have been severely underrated.

        9 cleansheet in 25 games.
        - only Liverpool (13), Chelsea (11), Man City, Tottenham (10) have more.
        - 5 from 12 (H).
        - 4 from 13 (A).

3 players in Top 10 defenders in term of Bonus points.
        - AWB (14), PVA, Sakho (12).
        - the other 7 players are Robertson (20), Alonso, Luiz (16), Keane, Pereira (14), Van Dijk, Digne (12).

I think Hudds and Cardiff are doomed. Could see Fulham scrapping to survive and they have decent enough fixtures too, same with Southampton and I can't see Brighton, Palace or Newcastle dropping too much which leaves Burnley in trouble. As for players i think there are cheap enough players from much better sides but Newc defence (seriously considering dubravka) could be interesting and mitrovic or babel could be ok. Batshuayi looks really interesting at 6.5m and i'm watching closely. Similarly JWP / Redmond at Southampton. Murray also at Brighton after GW27 blank.

Newcastle have really nice fixtures and their defence is really good (at least the much I saw against city). so i considering Schar with his goal threat.
I also think about Rondon but as I burned once with Newcastle offense (Kenedy) I dont know how much I can trust them.
For the others, I think Huddersfield are doomed, and the 2 other side that will relegated is 2 from Fulham, Cardiff, Southampton.

Posting again as my one above was admittedly one of the worst I have ever done and rightly deserved no real responses!!

      My main options pre-GW26 are:

      A) Kun > Auba (FT)
      B) Sané > Son (FT)
      C) Jota, Laporte > Son, 4.3def (-4)
      D) Kun, Jota, Laporte > Auba, Son, 4.4def (-8)
      E) Kamara, Laporte > Jimi, 4.7def (-4)

Option E means 'fixing' team to give more flexibility but ignores Auba and Son for now

      1FT 1.1itb
      Fab
      Robbo, Laporte, Luiz, Doherty
      Salah, Sané, Pogba, Jota
      Kun, Rash
      (Hamer) (JWP, AWB, Kamara)

      What do you think?
      Cheers!

          Thanks for the reply

You would be that ready to dump all MCI attacking assets?

I would def consider dropping one to bring in one of Auba or Son due to their fixtures, and Son's form

I just thought that actually getting rid of an expensive defender like Laporte who isn't keeping CS's and also has a blank felt more of a priority than ditching both attackers

It's really a tough decision as Pep roulette is clearly rife but also ARS and TOT not exactly predictable with their results atm!

            Sorry for delay.

Aguero is in form so he would probably be the one to keep of those two. I guess it depends on your chip/WC strategy pending what you have left.

Sane > son is certainly a sensible move this week

Would you really lose both MCI attackers though? I know they have a blank but they will be so hungry to overtake LIV now that we have slipped, I'm sure in all matches they play (vs big or smaller teams) they will be looking to play big

I would be more likely to do A this week then C next week and benching Sané for the blank?

            You can do it either.
Auba & Son are way more safe & good picks imo.
Also, I'd be keen on keeping Jota IF you don't have plans in near future to get Jimenez IN.
They have good run of fixtures & value to money as any player in FPL this season.
            Cheers buddy 🙂

        B and A.
Taking hits for template players is game week suicide.
Theres' no reason to rush Aguero out, Chelsea are capable of conceding a lot of goals, 4 against Bournemouth for example.
Id get rid of Sane, not just to get in Son, but to get rid of a rotation player.
Then Aguero to Cuba the following week.

Your logic makes sense - just scares me to consider losing both MCI attackers despite their blank

The fear would be I do this move and Kun is benched for Jesus vs CHE and Sané goes wild - also how I'd get a MCI attack back after the blank

I may consider taking a hit to get in Son for Sané this week and fixing Kamara to a decent cheap attacker as part of my Blank GW planning - something like:
Sané, Kamara > Son, Rondon (-4) or to be more risky:
Sané, Kamara, Laporte > Son, Jimi, Lindelof (-8)

Want Son and Auba, but to get both is not possible unless taking a -12. Team looks ok on paper this week, but towards gw27 I'm probably gonna have to take a hit or two anyway. Therefore considering taking one now and save a FT down the line, getting a Burnley fodder for gw31. Considering:

      A) Save
      B) Rich Digne > Son Mee (-4)
      C) Sterling Kamara > Auba Westwood (-4)

Shame the rank doubled thanks to Sane and no Aguero!

If you have a Cardiff mid you should take advantage of the opportunity and replace him with someone from a different team 😉

Currently have 8 starters for gw27 so looking to make 3 changes over the next 2gw's to out an XI. have 0m itb. Best options?

      Fabianski -- Button
Doherty • Digne • Holebas -- Alonso Schindler
      Salah • Pogba • Rich • Sterling • Sane
      Rashford • Jimenez -- Kamara

      A: Sterling + Sane + Kamara >> Auba + Son + 5.6m mid
      B: Sterling + Sane + Kamara >> Vardy + Son + Anderson/Maddison
C: Alonso + Sterling + Kamara >> Vardy + Son + Lascalles...keep Sane for city's good fixtures gw28-30 and also gets rid of alonso
      D: Alonso + Sane + Kamara >> Arnie + Son + Kola..very tempting! Keep Sterling for city's good run.

All have their merits with A being the safest option as most will cpt Auba in gw27..do i need to start considering the blanks in gw31? vardy plays every gw so worth a shout too

Does Jota come close to covering Jimenez?

I have neither and plan to get one. My dilemma is I cant get both and i just feel there are more striking options worth considering cheaper than Jimenez than there is cheaper midfielders worth considering over Jota. Someone like Batman or Rondon appeal to me. What mid/striker combo for 12.6m is worth considering?

Rondon could be gold from Gw 27

      This week:

      A) Aguero to Auba
      Or
      B) Rich + Digne to Son + 4.4 def (-4)

Will probably make the other move next gameweek as well. Thanks!

I'm a bit confused on the best move here, though I dont suppose it's a terribly original dilema.

      Does this make sense ??

      A) Kun > Auba (was the original plan) .....Auba seems best (C) option for 26-28 while Liverpool are gash
      B) Sterling > Son ....... seems better done sooner rather than later as their fixtures in 28/29 are a bit shonky, and they'll prob blank in 31

Am leaing toward doing A and skipping B. Don't think Son's worth a hit for one week, and a hit to get MCY back (I would really like a city player for 28-30 without making a transfer)

Is that logic sound ? Feels like I could get burned by Son in a GW26/27 but in the run to GW31 it seems like it makes more sense

Get Jimi & Yeah, that sounds about right 🙂

          (C) is king, so I'll first wait and see how many mins Kun gets on Wednesday.
