The reasons why clean sheets have dried up for Liverpool

Liverpool’s title challenge faltered again on Monday evening as the Reds played out their second successive 1-1 draw.

There were unsettling similarities to the performance against Leicester City last Wednesday, with Jurgen Klopp’s side unable to build, or even hang, on to a one-goal lead and conceding sloppily from a set-piece situation.

We’ll review last night’s penultimate Gameweek 25 fixture from a Fantasy perspective, rounding up the goals, assists, key talking points, headline injury news and relevant manager quotes.

West Ham United 1-1 Liverpool

  • Goals: Michail Antonio (£6.8m) | Sadio Mane (£9.6m)
  • Assists: Felipe Anderson (£7.1m) | James Milner (£5.6m)

Liverpool’s defensive frailties were again exposed at the London Stadium last night as they conceded from a dead-ball situation for the third match in a row.

James Tomkins (£4.3m) and Harry Maguire (£5.4m) had headed their respective sides level in Gameweeks 23 and 24 but this latest equaliser at the Reds’ expense came from a cleverly worked routine on the deck that was coolly finished by Michail Antonio (£6.8m).

While West Ham, Antonio and assist-maker Felipe Anderson (£7.1m) deserve credit for the flawless execution, the ease with which Liverpool’s backline was bypassed underscored just how vulnerable they currently are at set plays.

Klopp’s troops rank fourth-bottom for attempts from set pieces conceded over the last three Gameweeks, with a whopping eight of West Ham’s 13 attempts on goal on Monday coming from free-kicks and corners.

Javier Hernandez (£6.1m) horribly spooned a volley into the clouds from a smart Anderson delivery ten minutes after Antonio’s leveller before Declan Rice (£4.4m) missed a gilt-edged headed opportunity from yet another free-kick from the Brazilian midfielder.

Issa Diop (£4.3m) glanced a header wide from Robert Snodgrass‘s (£5.0m) corner in the second half as Liverpool’s zonal marking once again failed to convince, while Hernandez, Aaron Cresswell (£5.0m) and Mark Noble (£4.8m) all narrowly fired off-target from open play as the visiting defence parted.

While some mischief-makers will point to a possible psychological problem with the Reds after their stuttering run-in during 2013/14, in reality only three of that squad remain – none of whom made it onto the pitch in east London.

This instead looks like a team desperately missing a handful of sidelined players.

While Joel Matip (£4.9m) didn’t have a particularly bad game, there doesn’t seem to exist a natural rapport between him and a below-par Virgil van Dijk (£6.5m) – especially at dead-ball situations.

It may be no coincidence that the Reds’ run of conceding goals from free-kicks and corners has happened in the three most-recent matches that Matip has started, though Liverpool’s chronic problems at right-back – Trent Alexander-Arnold (£5.2m) being injured in Gameweek 22 – are no doubt also a contributing factor.

As might be the largely second-string central midfield in front of the defence: Naby Keita (£7.1m) and Adam Lallana (£6.9m) flitted in and out of Monday’s draw and the presences of Georginio Wijnaldum (£5.5m) and perhaps even Jordan Henderson (£5.3m) were arguably missed.

Keita is another to have started the last three Premier League matches and continues to divide opinion: indeed, it was the Guinean midfielder who lost Antonio for West Ham’s equaliser.

Owners of Robertson and van Dijk will be disheartened by just one clean sheet in six Gameweeks but there may be encouraging news on the horizon, with Alexander-Arnold scheduled for a return to training this week.

The injuries that kept Henderson (muscle) and Wijnaldum (sore knee) out don’t appear too serious, either, with Dejan Lovren (£4.9m) also only absent because of a “slight muscle problem”.

Klopp cited those niggles and strains as a mitigating factor in his post-match press conference:

Yesterday night we trained and after the session, we had to change three positions, that’s of course not perfect. And you saw that around the set-pieces, especially with organisation.

Changing three players changes a lot and obviously, that didn’t work out and that’s my fault, that we could not explain it clear enough what we have to do in a situation like that.

I don’t moan about that, it is just a fact. It is not an excuse or nothing. I said we could have played better tonight, 100 per cent, but it’s the situation and it’s not perfect. We lost two players and Millie came back because he didn’t train yesterday. He came by himself to London because it was infectious.

That is all not perfect, of course. For me, it explains parts of the game, but we don’t look for these things.

It could be, then, that with the returning bodies we soon see a reversion to the mean Liverpool defence of the opening half of the season, a 19-match period in which the Reds kept 12 clean sheets.

Nevertheless, those who own Ryan Fraser (£6.1m) and watched Liverpool’s recent struggles at dead-ball situations will perhaps be stirred into fielding Bournemouth’s set-piece specialist in Gameweek 26 despite the Cherries having what would seem an otherwise daunting fixture away at Anfield.

Liverpool’s attack didn’t fare much better at the London Stadium.

The shot count shows that Lukasz Fabianski (£4.7m) had five saves to make but every one of them was comfortable in nature – even from Divock Origi‘s (£5.0m) glorious one-on-one chance in injury time.

Mohamed Salah (£13.6m) tested the Polish goalkeeper twice during a ten-minute period at the start of the second half but that was the only time in this match that the Egyptian really flickered to life, with his second effort coming off the back of a brilliant, slaloming run through the West Ham box.

Salah was otherwise anonymous back on the right flank, however, with Roberto Firmino (£9.3m) borderline awful as he led the line in a 4-3-3.

Klopp said of his side’s attacking display:

We had a lot of situations with passing through balls and our full-backs, especially Robbo in the first half, where we didn’t find the free player. And on the other side, similar, we didn’t find it. It was difficult again, creating against so many legs, honestly.

It was no real compliment to say Sadio Mane (£9.6m) was the pick of Liverpool’s attackers, with the Senegalese winger peripheral in the second half, but he kept up his FPL scoring purple patch by netting a third goal in as many Gameweeks midway through the opening 45 minutes.

Mane has twice the number of goals from open play as Salah (four to two) over the last seven Gameweeks and during that time is bettering the Egyptian for overall attempts on goal and shots in the box.

Mane’s goal arrived in controversial circumstances, with James Milner (£5.6m) – the latest midfielder to be turned into a makeshift right-back – clearly offside as he crossed for the former Southampton winger to smartly turn and finish.

Just as Leicester merited plaudits in midweek, West Ham deserve credit for their fast-pressing, counter-attacking performance that wholly warranted at least a point.

Anderson and Antonio were excellent on the flanks, with the Brazilian again the most eye-catching from a Fantasy perspective amid some workmanlike performances from his team-mates.

The Hammers sit at the top of our Season Ticker for the coming half-dozen Gameweeks, with five of their next six opponents currently sitting 14th or worse in the Premier League table.

Fabianski and Anderson obviously appeal for this run, while it will be intriguing to hear about Marko Arnuatovic‘s (£6.9m) injury prognosis – the Austrian was sidelined for this draw with a foot problem but would surely re-enter the mid-price forward debate if fit, given the fixtures ahead for the Hammers.

Pellegrini said of his side’s efforts:

I was pleased with the performance because I thought we played a very good game, but I’m disappointed with the result because they scored a goal which was clearly offside.

We missed three or four chances, especially in the first 35 minutes, which could have finished the game. We missed those opportunities so we had a draw in a game which we could have won.

We played with the pace we had shown in other games again. We worked similarly tonight to we did against Arsenal, but we created more chances today. We then lost three games away from home but I think the team we saw tonight is the team we must see from now until the end of the season.

We always work hard on the set pieces but it depends on the taker and the finisher. You must believe me that we worked on set pieces exactly as much as we did against Bournemouth, against Wimbledon, against every team.

West Ham United XI (4-1-4-1): Fabianski; Fredericks, Ogbonna, Diop, Cresswell; Rice, Antonio, Snodgrass, Noble (Obiang 79′), Anderson (Masuaku 89′); Chicharito (Carroll 79′).

Liverpool XI (4-3-3): Alisson; Milner, Matip, van Dijk, Robertson; Fabinho, Keita, Lallana (Shaqiri 69′); Salah, Firmino (Origi 75′), Mane.

For all those who own City assets with captains/TC tomorrow night, surely Liverpool dropping further points only increases the chance of all 3 playing? I said it yesterday and personally, from an attacking point I think David Silva will make way for Sane with with Bernardo Silva playing central with KDB. I think Aguero stays in the starting 11 for sure.

I only own Sterling (TC) but I think Man City are going to pounce for sure. Making several changes to the team, i.e. Stones, Danillo/Mendy, Mahrez, Jesus, on top of bringing Sane in would be madness. Yes they have Chelsea on Sunday, but every game now is as big as the next. Momentum and confidence is what makes great teams go on to win the league.

Either way, it is going to be an exciting evening for FPL one way or another. Good luck to all

I agree. While Klopp isn't seemingly (and worryingly) bothered by Pep, Pep is 100% bothered by Klopp. I expect City's strongest XI and a full throttle approach.

This is the pivotal gw of the season from fpl and maybe even the perspective of the league. Pep should try to demoralise Klopps side with a 7:0 trimming of Everton.

It's already made a difference. City go back to top of the league. Game advantage to Liverpool but that only increases the pressure on Liverpool. It makes City hungrier than ever

It will imo. All Pep does is speak about Liverpool and it's the same with their players. (See Walker, Sterling and Gundogan in last 2 days).

You are making two separate arguments at the same time. Bringing in Stones is very likely as he is the normal centre half pairing with Laporte and it is also highly unlikely he will play without a recognised left back, Danilo will almost certainly come into the fold in some capacity. This in my mind is independent of the attacking considerations where I agree that rotation is unlikely to be heavy.

I'm really not. I'm making case for the attacking lineup. Maybe I could have just said I can't see Mahrez and Jesus coming in. Tactical changes may well be necessary. Like Danilo in for Gundogan and Sane in for D Silva with a re-shuffle.

But their goal difference is vastly superior already.

They just need to win. Perhaps if they wanted to make a statement and needed to win 0-5 to go top, then you could argue he might risk a stronger line up.

But they just need a win. Their back-up players can easily do that against Everton.

I mean really what the original post seemed to suggest was prior to City playing Arsenal Pep thought, oh well we're probably not going to win the league so I'll put out a weakened team without Stones, or Sane.
Then Liverpool dropped points against West Ham, so now Pep thinks, wow we're right back in this title race, better start my best eleven.

I personally don't think the end result is going to change, it should always be a landslide, however i think the OP was suggesting that the mindset for City is going to change slightly to more focused, and rightly so. This is a massive opportunity for City to put the pressure on Liverpool so i do think a 5-0 win sends a better message than 2-0 so Pep will/should be focusing on a positive performance tomorrow.

Everton are a real Jekyll and Hyde team, I still think City will beat them, but don't expect a landslide.

But more in relation to the point in the OP, I don't think Liverpool dropping points will have any affect on the City line up (which I believe was already planned in advance by Pep).

I don't really think City have a 'best eleven' anyway to be honest.

                    Different players for different.....needs.

That's not what my post suggests mate. Yes it was a shock that Sane didn't play I guess, but it proved tactical genius by Pep. I also think Sane could have ran rings around Lichtsteiner. I think he just showed more faith in Sterling. Or it could have been a lack of showing in training. I'm no genius... I can't second guess Pep. It's just my thoughts pal. Listening to Fernandinho about his role in that game was very interesting though. He constantly moved from centre half with a back 4, to joining Gundogan in the pivot in front of a back 3. Adjusting to Arsenal's attacking shape. Tomorrow will be interesting again

Yes the line up was very strange against Arsenal, further proof that none of us can predict Pep, frustratingly.

I hope Sane comes in tomorrow night, as long as it's not at the expense of Sterling (c)

IMO Stones was dropped as the centre backs were poor against Newcastle - especially dealing with long balls into Rondon. Re Sane, I personally think we'll see a lot more of Sterling playing LW going forward.

I agree...Sterling works better on the left imo. Though unlike Mahrez, Sane looks more comfortable on the left. He's more direct like an old school left winger. Sane is quite a sulky bugger when he doesn't play. I just hope he responds well as he's having a great season thus far

Yeah its going to be interesting. Remember all the stories at the beginning of the season about his attitude / lack of effort in training? I seem to recall Toni Kroos talking about it. Taking this into account, is Pep going to turn to Sane when the team is going through a difficult moment, as they have been recently? I have my doubts and can see more of a Bernardo, Aguero, Sterling attacking trio once Mendy is back.

I've mentioned before that it was interesting against Newcastle, Sane was brought off for Jesus, and Sterling moved to left wing, with Jesus moving to the right where Sterling had started the game.
This should be a concern for Sane owners as it shows that Pep would prefer to have Sterling on the pitch, on the left, rather than take him off, and leave Sane on the left.

I'd also have to agree with you there mate. From a selfish point of view, I hope that's the case. I'm sure Aguero VC'ers would be hoping a Sane no show. Can't see it myself at all. Though it's infuriatingly interesting to see how they will line up. My main point is that I believe Aguero, Sane and Sterling could well all start. With D Silva (or KDB) making way. I need another coffee haha

Sterling normally plays 90 mins, Sane often gets hooked after about 70.
Also, Sane has been rested several times when playing other teams in the big six.
I expect him to play tomorrow, but he could be rested again against Chelsea.
I wish I'd thought a bit more about this before bringing in Sane - should have gone for Aguero or Sterling instead.

                  Partly hindsight, but not entirely.
I had decided to bring in Sane rather than Sterling for Hazard because the experts here were saying that he was less likely to be rested.
But then I noticed on Friday evening about Sane's reduced minutes compared to Sterling's, and his having being rested several times against the other big six teams.
Having made these discoveries I ought then to have given myself a bit longer to think about whether Sane really was the best choice, but instead I rushed to make the transfer before the price change deadline.
Within a few minutes of making the transfer however, I got a nasty feeling that I had made a big mistake and should have brought in Sterling instead.
I was reassured the next morning when I saw that Sane appeared to be the popular choice, but when the team-sheet came out with Sane benched I realised that my forebodings had been justified.
Bringing in Aguero for Aubameyang instead might have been even better, but it was only when looking back in hindsight that I realised that if Sane wasn't more likely to play twice then perhaps I ought to have considered that possibility more seriously, even though it would then have required a 4 point hit to restore Aubameyang as well as bringing in Son and Rashford the following week.
Of course, if Sane gets a hat-trick tomorrow and the other two are rested then my decision won't look quite so bad, even though Hazard (who I sold) scored 13 more than Aubameyang (who I kept). I really didn't expect Hazard to do so well, considering his lack of attacking returns in recent matches.
                  Fingers crossed for tomorrow!

Fair play mate and hope all comes good again tomorrow. At least you have your 3 chips in tact. The only reason I opted for Sterling because too many around me owned Sane and I wanted another route. Could have easily gone the other way.... and quite possibly still might. Good luck

Great post! However, I think it will be the Silva's in midfield. KdB came off with cramps on Sunday, and I think he might get rested for Chelsea. Other than that, don't see many changes. Perhaps Stones for Otamendi.

I guess some are excitable about all this but is there really any point in speculating? No-one can change their team in any way before Wednesday so it's simply a case that what will be, will be.

Hi Ruth. I didn't expect a change in his line-up. I believed it increased the chances of less rotation (which I believed yesterday) but yes it's pure speculation.

Sorry but I don't have the slightest interest in what you expect.

If this were pre-deadline when I could change my team and/or captain and/or make a decision about using the FH chip then there might be some value in the conversation. But as it is it's just people drooling over the points they think they might get and trying to convince themselves/others that the scenario they prefer will eventuate.

It's pointless in other words, though the excitability is maybe understandable.

Ruth, it’s a website about fantasy football. There is a football game coming up, it is not unreasonable for people to discuss their ideas for a line up. Not every post has to be useful for preparing your specific team.

You are correct that there is no specific gain in making this post - it doesn’t benefit anyone except for generating conversation. Being correct doesn’t mean you have to be a knob though

I had thought Jesus would get Everton but now I think Aguero gets it, and Chelsea. I expect Sterling to start again and Sane to come in - with most managers I would be afraid of a Sane rest, so he could keep the team the same, but that's not Pep and I think Sane comes in.

A change or two in midfield, one of the Silvas out looks likely. KDB looked exhausted for the last 20 minutes he was on I think he might get a rest.

I don't think we can overstate how big those dropped points were from Liverpool yesterday. With City 3 back and Tottenham also scraping wins, Liverpool's nerves could easily continue to get worse. That said Salah, Mane, Robertson still seem good FPL picks

Nolan also commented saying West Ham could sense Liverpool's nerves. As city did, I expect Liverpool to bounce back against Bounemouth. If Bounemouth attack and play like they have been doing, it could play into Liverpool's hands. You'd think this game had goals in it so I certainly won't be dropping my Liverpool assets. Though Firmino will become Vardy for the Utd clash.

That said.... roll on Wednesday evening 😉

Bournemouth need a bounce back too though..

West Ham certainly did see the nerves and had a solid game plan, quick counters, and huge threat from set pieces. I think the formula is there for everyone to see and now Klopp and a few of the players need to respond consistently. I agree that they'll bounce back and play better next GW but I think now they're vulnerable to this more often. They look to have a bad performance in them now more than they did before

It's tough at the top. Gary Neville said the other day that Fergie hated January/Feb as his title winning teams would get bored. Don't think this is quite the case. It's going to be a fascinating run in that's for sure

I may have agreed with you if Kun & Sterling had come off after 65 minutes, but they didn’t.

The so-called strongest front line was used in the loss to Newcastle, and the strange line-up beat Arsenal

I do t think there is really any evidence to suggest Sterling & Kun will start later today, they may start but the evidence if anything suggests they won’t.

Not a Spurs fan, but I think you're correct.

With Kane's injury record every year, you would think Pooch would do a better job managing his game time to reduce the risk of injury.

Well as a Spurs fan, i d agree that Kane's mins should be managed. Problem is the fact that there isnt a scond striker plus the golden boot chase, that puts pressure on Kane and Poch and is bad for the teams outcome. We cant know what Poch has in mind or in what condition Llorente was the whole time but even now with Kane out Llorente isnt totally nailed. The latter and the fact that without Kane Spurs got two home wins in the last minutes vs weaker teams, proves that maybe Spurs cant afford not using Kane whenever he is available. Plus the fact that his being on the pitch opens space for the rest. Personally, i d prefer to not see him on the pitch for 2-3 more weeks until he is 100% fit, even if that means he ll lose a CL game.

He has never given llorente a proper run of munutes imo... cup games wont cut it, llorente is a proven striker and better in the air than kane. It's no wonder that he looked rusty initially but then started to find form when he was put in recentky. Now imagine pocche did that when kane wasn't injured and used llorente in a few more prem league games... you may have prevented those one month spells in the physio room Harry has every season, usually at crucial times

Poor in the first half, very good in the second. Becoming a scapegoat because he's an easy fall boy - Milner, Matip, Robertson, Lallana, Salah, Shaqiri, Firmino and Origi were worse last night.

firmino had a shocker, more possession given away than kept but feel Keita has been very underwhelming since you've signed him

do you think it's a pogba situation where keita needs to solely focus on his attacking game to get the best out of his game because right now he looks ineffective

Keita has been poor don't get me wrong and he has to improve because he hasn't been good enough, but he is being made a scapegoat for last night when in fact he grew into the game.

Keita is suffering from a things I think:
            - We signed him 2 years ago but Klopp was annoyed he didn't make the effort to learn English, so he hasn't settled in the dressing room it seems.
            - Adapting to the physicality of the league.
            - He plays in a 2 man midfield, but Klopp doesn't trust him there. So he either plays wide or plays in a 3. But then playing in a 3 takes the best out of Firmino.
            - Being in a title race means that Klopp's trust in Henderson, Wijnaldum and Milner is unwaivered.

Fwiw I think like Pogba, Keita will turn up eventually. He has everything in his game.

Really?I didn't think so, there was an improvement but He ran down so many blind alleys in that second half, lovely little runs into box but didnt seem to know what to do in that final moment when crowded out by defenders then lost possession and west ham counter attacked..lallana bobby and origi were terrible..i thought Salah did ok but was let down by bobby...and matip made some great tackles no?

I thought Keita was really good 2nd half tbh and the stats suggest he was our best player after Mane.

I thought Matip was terrible personally.

      sane > mane?

      ederson
      robertson - pva - doherty
      salah(c) - mane - sterling - pogba - siggy
      rashford - jiminez

      fab - ings - bednarek - awb

would this be the correct first xi and bench?

not confident he scores v leicester, they've done well against the top 6 this season

will bring in for 27 though probably

Good move. Shame you can't play one of your Southampton assets in such a good fixture but its hard to take out any of the current 11.

but ings is yellow flagged and likely to be out if his recent injury record is anything to go by!

With 2FT I am looking to do:

      Hazard -> Son
      Richarlison -> Jota
      Ings -> Rondon.

How do I do this? Do I use 2 transfers this week? Only do 1 to have 2FT in GW27? Thoughts?

      How does the below look:

      Robertson > Chilwell
      Ings > Auba

Sets me up with a Liecester for GW27 onwards, and Auba obviously.

      Would give me:
      Allison / Speroni
      Kolasinac / Shaw / Doherty / AWB / Chilwell
      Salah / Sane / Pogba / Son / Brooks
      Auba / Rashford / Jimenez

Best defender for the next 5?
Liverpool - BOU, mun, WAT, eve, BUR (if I go for 1 it'll be a double up)
Newcastle - wol, HUD, BUR, whu, EVE
Leicester - tot, CRY, BHA, wat, FUL
Arsenal - hud, SOU, BOU, tot, MUN

Looking at these 4 teams primarily and need to pick one of:
      a- Chilwell
      b- Pereiera
      c- Kolasinac
      d- Yedlin
      e- Robertson
      f- TAA

          Patricio (Speroni)
Robertson - Digne - Lindelof (Bennett, Bednarek)
          Salah - Son - Pogba - Sane - Sterling
          Chicharito - Ings (Niasse)
