FPL chip strategies for the Blank and Double Gameweeks ahead

Manchester United’s victory over Chelsea on Monday evening and the subsequent FA Cup quarter-final draw means that we finally know the full extent of Blank Gameweek 31.

Just five Premier League matches will take place that weekend as a result of the clash with the FA Cup quarter-finals and ten clubs will be without a league fixture.

Those ten sides will face a Double Gameweek as a consequence, very possibly as soon as Gameweek 32 given that there is a convenient midweek after the already-scheduled matches that is free of any UEFA Champions League or Europa League action.

Gameweek 35 also looks primed to be a Double Gameweek and could even potentially absorb some of those cancelled Gameweek 31 games, though of course, the Premier League will have further fixtures to reschedule as a result of Gameweek 33’s clash with the FA Cup semi-finals.

As a result, we are operating under the assumption that the following will occur – though we emphatically stress that nothing has so far been confirmed regarding when the Double Gameweeks will take place:

Blank Gameweek 31 – five Premier League fixtures will be contested.

Double Gameweek 32 – ten Premier League fixtures will be initially contested, plus some/all of the additional five that were postponed from Gameweek 31.

Blank Gameweek 33 – between six and eight Premier League fixtures will be contested.

Double Gameweek 35 – ten Premier League fixtures will be contested, plus some/all of the additional two/three/four that were postponed from Gameweek 33 and potentially any other outstanding matches.

Chelsea and Brighton (whose Gameweek 27 meeting was postponed as a result of the clash with Sunday’s EFL Cup final) may enjoy an additional Double Gameweek or even a Triple Gameweek in Brighton’s case, depending on the Seagulls’ progression to the FA Cup semi-finals.

For quite some time now, we’ve preached a “wait and see” policy on chip strategy and stressed the importance of the FA Cup fifth round, given that the results of the cup ties in the weekend just gone have such an impact on Blank Gameweek 31 and beyond.

Now seems the right time to assess our options, however, so we’ve taken a look at a handful of chip strategies that Fantasy managers might consider for the weeks and months ahead.

There is no right or wrong way to deploy chips in FPL – at least, not until hindsight comes into play – and there are strategies beyond the ones outlined below that could prove to be more effective in the long-run.

Last season, Yusuf Shiekh Wildcarded in Gameweek 25, Bench Boosted in Gameweek 37 and used his Triple Captain chip in Gameweek 38 – and finished first in the world.

As is always the case with these things, the most favourable strategy will differ from manager to manager and may depend on your current set-up.

Strategy 1

Build a team for GW31+33 / FH32 / WC34 / BB or TC35

This strategy entails steadily building a team of players using free transfers (and maybe a hit or two) between now and Gameweek 31, drafting in players who have a guaranteed fixture in Blank Gameweek 31 and, ideally, Blank Gameweek 33.

The Free Hit chip can then be used to cherry-pick 11 players who have attractive fixtures in Double Gameweek 32, before the second Wildcard is deployed in Gameweek 34 ahead of Double Gameweek 35.

Bench Boost or Triple Captain can then be used in Double Gameweek 35, with the remaining chip (if any) having to be used in a single Gameweek or, if there is one, another mini-Double Gameweek involving Chelsea and Brighton.

Pros:

  • Good if you are already well on your way to fielding 11 players in Blank Gameweek 31 (e.g. already have perhaps five or more assets in your squad who have an unaffected fixture that weekend).
  • This policy could ultimately save a valuable chip, as those Fantasy managers using Free Hit in Gameweek 31 may end up with a very similar starting XI given the (relative) lack of attractive fixtures to choose from.
  • Building a team for Blank Gameweek 31 has the dual benefit of setting up for Blank Gameweek 33, too. There may be a cluster of clubs without a Premier League fixture in both – Wolves and Manchester United already fall into the camp.
  • Players from Leicester, Liverpool, Bournemouth, West Ham, Huddersfield, Burnley, Chelsea and Everton can be targeted for Gameweek 31 in the knowledge that those clubs also have a fixture in Gameweek 33.
  • The likes of Leicester, West Ham, Liverpool and Huddersfield have largely good fixtures anyway leading up to the Blank Gameweeks.
  • An especially attractive strategy for those with low team value who don’t have a lot of money tied up in assets they may need to ditch (e.g. Paul Pogba or Raul Jimenez).
  • Means that a decision can be made as late as possible on fit and firing Gameweek 32 players, with that Gameweek falling after the March international break.

Cons:

  • Means that Bench Boost or Triple Captain can’t be used in Gameweek 32, which may potentially be the biggest Double Gameweek of all.
  • Means that one of the two above chips would have to be used in a mini-Double Gameweek or a regulation single Gameweek.
  • With still a month to go before Gameweek 31, injury/suspension/loss of form could befall the players that are being stocked up on.
  • Would likely mean having to avoid/gradually ditch in-form assets from the likes of Manchester United, Manchester City and Wolves in order to field 11 players in Gameweeks 31 and 33 (though up to three outfield players and a goalkeeper from these teams could, of course, be benched during their blanks).
  • Those relying on team value for a later Wildcard may lose a considerable amount of money if ditching assets such as Doherty, Pogba, Marcus Rashford and Raul Jimenez as they build for Gameweeks 31 and 33.

A slight variation of this strategy is as follows:

Strategy 2

Build a team for GW31 / WC32 / FH33 / BB or TC35

As above, this strategy entails gradually building a team of players using free transfers (and hits, if necessary) between now and Gameweek 31, drafting in players who have a guaranteed fixture in Blank Gameweek 31 – but not looking beyond that point.

The Wildcard can then be used to select 11 players who have attractive fixtures in Double Gameweek 32 and potentially again in Double Gameweek 35.

The Free Hit chip would be used for Blank Gameweek 33.

Bench Boost or Triple Captain can then be used in Double Gameweek 35, with the remaining chip (if any) having to be used in a single Gameweek or, if there is one, another mini-Double Gameweek involving Chelsea and Brighton.

Almost all of the same pros and cons for Strategy 1 apply to this method too, though in addition:

Pros

  • Ensures a strong starting XI in Blank Gameweek 33, which will have more fixtures to choose from than Blank Gameweek 31.

Cons

  • The gap between Double Gameweek 32 and Double Gameweek 35 is three weeks – meaning advanced stockpiling for the latter could be affected by subsequent injury/suspension/loss of form etc.

Strategy 3

FH 31 / build for 32 and TC or BB / WC34 / TC or BB 35

This strategy entails gradually building a team of players using free transfers (and hits, if necessary) between now and Gameweek 32, focusing almost exclusively on players who have a double in Gameweek 32.

The Free Hit chip can then be used to select 11 players who have attractive fixtures in Blank Gameweek 31.

As in Strategy 1, the second Wildcard is deployed in Gameweek 34 ahead of Double Gameweek 35.

The Bench Boost and Triple Captain chips can be used in Double Gameweeks 32 and 35.

Pros

  • Means that the Triple Captain and Bench Boost chips can each be used in a Double Gameweek, potentially raising the points ceiling for both of those weeks.
  • Has the potential to retain high team value until the Wildcard, especially for those managers who have a lot of money tied up in the more popular assets from the likes of Wolves, Manchester United and Manchester City.
  • Means managers can focus on the attractive fixtures leading up to Gameweek 31 without worrying about blanks. Manchester City’s forthcoming run (WHU, bou, WAT) could be fully exploited, while someone like Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang might be brought in for Gameweek 27 as a short-term punt.
  • Managers can cherry-pick a Gameweek 31 squad and ensure a playing starting XI.
  • As with Strategy 1, ensures a strong Double Gameweek 35 team/squad with transfers left relatively late in the day.

Cons

  • Potentially severely weakened Gameweek 33 team, with focus being on Double Gameweek 32 and the Free Hit having already been used in Gameweek 31.
  • Wolves v Manchester United is definitely off in Gameweek 33 – meaning that managers with numerous assets from these clubs who planned to keep hold of Messrs Pogba, Rashford and co may be struggling to cobble together a starting XI.
  • Double Gameweek 32 occurs after the international break, meaning any plans to steadily build a squad for that round of fixtures could again be derailed by injury/suspension/loss of form given that much can happen in the intervening six weeks.
  • With Liverpool, Leicester, West Ham and Chelsea all enjoying decent fixture runs in the coming weeks and months, managers may already own five, six, seven or even more players with a fixture in Blank Gameweek 31 as it is – leaving a question mark over how much worth the deployment of a Free Hit chip on the likes of Bournemouth and Burnley assets for one Gameweek really is.

A slight tweak to Strategy 3 would be to use Free Hit in Gameweek 33 instead of 31, with the decimated starting XI instead being in the latter.

Fantasy managers without their Triple Captain chips should be able to adopt and adapt any of the above strategies, though those without their Wildcard will likely have to sacrifice one of the Blank Gameweeks in order to get the most out of the Doubles: FH31 or FH33, build for 32 and 35, and TC/BB in 32/35 is one avenue for that group of FPL bosses.

I can't help but think that people are ripping up successful teams between now and GW31 for the sake of fielding a team in a GW with what are pretty poor teams.

I might be missing something as I've not had my head in it all as much as some of you guys but surely if you have all your chips left, a sensible strategy is:

GW27-30 - operate as normal to maximise returns without getting hung up on BGW
    GW31 - Free Hit
GW32 - Wildcard into a team with maximum DGW coverage and get as much GW33 cover as possible, using FT also between GW32 and GW33
GW33 - might not be the best but it's only one week
GW35 - bench boost on the second DGW
    Triple Captain whenever suits

Am I missing something or is that a viable plan?

Agree 27-30 but I will offload mostly fringe players or likes of Koscielny with no banked TV and get +7 for 31/33

31FH makes no sense to me based on the above. You've already said makes no sense to load up on poor teams with I agree with and the ones I get for 31 will play 33 so FH32 means I will maximise DGW team and have 31 players for 33 that I targeted

      1. cpo001
        3 months, 27 days ago

Fair enough but I'm sitting with only 3 players for GW31 at the moment, which means a lot of disruption between now and then, and ignores what can happen between now and GW30. I would have to radically overhaul a team with poorer players who would not collect as many points between GW27 and GW30 as the team I have now.

That's the point I'm making really, I don't understand why people are sacrificing loads for GW31/33 when there are more points to be scored between GW27 and GW30.

I won't sacrifice Aguero Sterling Salah Pogba between 27-30 or at all. Nor probably Doherty Son Rashford Jimi until 31 but few could be sold for hits. Where's the problem?

I won't be sacrificing anyone major until GW31 itself, when I will use 2fts, maybe take a hit too.

Before then I can transfer in some cheap defenders.

          After that, FH32 and WC34

Depends on your team..... for example my planned transfers into 31 are likely to be made quite late on (I have 6 already playing - Salah, Fanderson, Robertson, Peirera, Fabianski and Puncheon). So I'll take a -4 for these 3

Shaw to TAA week 30 - captures fixture swing for 30 and covers blank for 31
Sane to Fraser week 30 - captures fixture swing for 30 and covers blank for 31
Jimenez to Wilson/King week 30 - as per above

That not only gives me 9 players, but in a pretty rubbish week 31 it gives me

Liverpool away to Fulham - Salah, Robertson and TAA
West Ham home to Huddersfield - Fabianski and Anderson
Bournemouth home to Newcastle - Fraser and King/Wilson
Leicester away at Burnley - Peirera
Huddersfield away at West Ham - Puncheon

Week 33 is pretty damn easy to get an 11 out and my free hit in 32 means I'm pretty strong over all three gameweeks and can wildcard in 34......

I'd be mad to waste the free hit in 31 given my team. That is the key, assuming you have all chips, can you get out 6 or 7 GOOD players for week 31 plus a couple of others.

Could delay one of the Bournemouth transfers to week 31 to be honest..... that would avoid the hit.

Gives me a transfer to use in week 28 or 29 (but not both) over and above the plan (probably Aguero in for Auba in week 29)

If I had a FH chip it would definitely be GW32. Can get a team in 31 with tfrs and most will be playing 33

I have Salah and Snodgrass for 31 and not worried. Still makes no sense to waste FH on 31 vs 32

          2. cpo001
            3 months, 27 days ago

In my team, the only players playing GW31 I have at the moment are Salah and Robertson.

That means I need to find 9 new players between now and GW31 - which means a massive overhaul between now and then. It also means -16 in hits to field a full 11 on GW31.

Everyone is different but building a team for GW31 is not viable for me, given it would weaken the team I currently have and am doing well with.

            1. Kiwivillan

The problem in your head is needing 11. You don't. 7 good players vs people with 7 plus 4 players that score 2-5pts maybe. If you don't fixate on getting 11 players there is less of a problem

            2. scubasmithy
              • 3 Years

              - Salah
              - Robertson
              - Mane/Firmino/TAA
              - Anderson/Arnie
              - Fraser
              - Wilson/King

Make 4 moves in weeks 30 and 31 combined - means a -8, but then you avoid wasting your chip on week 31 and losing out in weeks 32 and 33.

Proves the point even further, why rip up a good team up to and including GW30 to field a partial team?

Sitting at 16k OR at the moment which is good for me, and top of my mini-leagues.

Think my decision needs to be
GW27-GW30 - maximise returns like normal
            GW31 - Free Hit
            GW32 - Wildcard for DGW
            GW33 - suck up a poor week
GW35 - Bench Boost for DGW
            GW36 TC Salah v Huddersfield

            Thanks for inputs!

Yes I am sure you are missing something, sorry but this would mean no use of bench boost or tc, because you can't deploy 2 chips in one week. Using wildcard in 32, means no way to use a tc or bench boost in 32 dgw, you got coverage but can't use a chip in 32 dgw. Not so much my idea of fun with a big dgw. But hey that's just my opinion dude good luck to you for the crazy weeks of fpl

      1. cpo001

Ah I see, thanks! That's the part I've perhaps missed. Although TC on a DGW doesn't always work out I guess when minutes get managed in the second game.

Just looking ahead to Citys fixtures they could have:

    Fulham Away March 30th
    Man United Away April 2nd
    FA cup semi April 6th
    Champ QF April 9th
    Palace Away April 13th
    Champ QF April 16th
    Spurs Home April 20th
    Cardiff April 23rdth
    Burnley April 27th
    Champ Semi April 30th

Peps lineups are a lottery, but I think its fair to assume that Prem games will be where players are rested. That second double gameweek for City TOT+CAR, looks perfect for a full first team rotation in second match...

I'm not sure it's that clear cut. Pep has spoken in the past about wanting to establish City as the dominant English force and admitted retaining the PL is his primary motivation.

"The first priority is the Premier League, that is the nicest one. When I see, for example, three teams like Barcelona, Bayern Munich and Juventus in 10 years they won seven leagues, they show me they are the best teams. We want to be consistent and solid in that competition."

To me, that FA Cup semi wedged in between United and the Champions League QF looks primed for Mahrez over Bernardo, Gundogan coming in, rotation of the centre backs etc.

    I have a plan! Currently 4 BGW31 players...

    Ederson Patricio
    Robertson TAA Doherty Digne AWB
    Salah Pogba Son Fraser Hojbjerg
    Aguero Rashford Jiménez

    27 - Doherty to Pereira
    28 - none
29 - Ederson to Boruc; Hojbjerg to F Anderson
    30 - Jiménez to Wilson
31 - Aguero to Higuain; Son to Hazard (-4)

Gives a full 11 of in GW31 of:

    Boruc
    Robertson TAA Pereira Digne
    Salah Hazard F Anderson Fraser
    Higuain Wilson

9 of those also guaranteed for GW33

    FH32; WC34; BB35

Im struggling to not destroy my team and looking like I can field 9 come Gw 31 with below. dont want to change too much as sitting top of my mini money leagues

      Current team
      Ederson/Patricio
      Robbo/Kol/Bennett/Bed/Lind
      Salah/Pog/Son/Fanderson/Redmond
      Aub/Rash/Jime

      Transfer plan
      Gw 28 Save FT
      Gw 29 -4 Ederson -> Fab
      Redmond -> McNeil
      Lind -> Pereira (3.8 itb)
      Gw 30 Aub -> Higuain (5.3m itb)
      GW 31 -4 Bed -> TAA
      Son -> Haz (1.9m itb)

yep. I had wanted to do FHgw31 as this would enable me to use TC in one of the dgw, but as it works out it's very easy to build a good 11 for gw31 and be set for gw33 as well. The fact that Wolves fixtures turn around 29/30 at the same time Bournemouth are good really helps.

Thesis: last season’s big blank gameweek was only a success because Salah exploded as the standout captain choice. Without him, it would have been a poor week.

Conclusion: BGW31 could go horribly wrong for those banking on it giving them a big advantage.

Thoughts on these transfers over the next few weeks - FH32 and WC34 strategy in play:

27: Holebas -> Pereira (-4)....to get 11 out this week
    28: Son -> Mane
    29: Siggy & Auba -> Hazard & Arnie (-4)
    30: Rashford -> Vardy
    31: Ings -> Wilson

Gives me the below for 31:

    Fabs
    TAA, Pereira, Digne
    Salah, Hazard, FAnderson, Mane
    Vardy, Arnie, Wilson

  19. pingissimus

Wolves United in 33 definitely off? Seems so. How many Wolves United assets do you have?

If you FH 32 and WC 34 that’s a 4 game run where they’re redundant as you can get them for free in the games they do play. Teams that go into 31 with Pogba, Rashford and Jimmy don’t look optimal!

For me I’m now definitely switching out of Jimmy by 31 - something I was sure I wouldn’t do having got him at 5.6.

I'm going with same plan as you re chips.
      Have Son,Pogba,Rash, Doherty
Will bench them all for blanks.

Do you realize Jimenez also has 2 dgw's as he has 2 bgws 😉

If you can, I'd keep him on bench.
No need to play 11 in gw31.
      8-9 good players can do

      1. pingissimus
        3 months, 27 days ago

Yes but I can get Jimmy in on FH and WC surely. I don’t see the future of keeping him if he blanks 33 too - I’d prefer Higuain for those. I can do that without a hit

      1. pingissimus
        3 months, 27 days ago

That was what I thought about Jimmy. But if you hold you are benching them twice and possibly City assets too.

To make it worthwhile you need to commit to playing them in your FH and WC sides. I’m thinking that I may want to go in a different direction there - Kane could be back and firing then.

anyone with all the chips except the WC came up with a strategy yet?

from now onwards, i will keep all my players that have play twice for DGW32, which im currently able to field a starting 11 with those.

since BGW31 have such underwhelming fixtures, im not gonna do much planning with it except to go with 3 LIV and maybe 2 or 3 others from CHE and maybe WHM, LEI or BOU, to give me a total of 5 or 6 players for BGW31.

BGW33 have more fixtures than BGW31, i also believe there are more appealing player options in BGW33 than BGW31, so I will use my FH chip in BGW33.

after BGW33, i will my free transfers and possibility 1 or 2 hits to get as many players that play twice in DGW35 as possible.

the BB and TC chips will then be used for DGW32 and DGW35, the order of which chip to play in which DGW has not been decided.

what you guys reckon? especially those without WC

Liking the look of Newcastle's fixtures & have a 6m space to fill in midfield: thoughts on Almiron?

Seen several articles (from, most likely biased, Newcastle-based forums) talking about him as if he's a miracle, but not sure how reliable they are or how good of a fantasy differential he looks.

            * Ok found it - think that's just an error as no flag under player availability on same page

Myself and my mates are heading over to Liverpool at the end of April for the Hudd home game. Obviously hoping we're well in the title run at that stage.

Big questions now tho is should I use my TC on Salah that day (some buzz) in a SGW considering i'm thinking the following strategy?

    Currently have 6 players playing in 31 so FT's to set up BGW 31 & 33, FH 32, WC 34 BB 35.

Salah against Fulham/Hudds is good choice i guess

I suppose the real Q is there's no real way to navigate the pending BGW/DGW by playing your TC and BB in DGW 32 and 35?

24 points behind my ML leader, i have all my chips, but he has only used his WC.

Who holds the better position? What is the best way for me to use my WC to gain the ground and use it to my full advantage?

Well, there are a lot of good fixtures for the template side until GW31.
It is tempting to build a team for GW31 but you could be sacrificing points to get there.
Your free hit 32 could be the key. He will probably do the same.
A different Tactic would be to use your WC in 32 and FH GW33 and bench boos the next available DGW.
