The key talking points ahead of Blank Gameweek 31

The first big Blank Gameweek of the season is upon us with just five fixtures this weekend which has managers panicking about not having XI players while those who have prepared for Gameweek 31 with their transfers in recent weeks are feeling confident about achieving a healthy green arrow.

‘Do I take hits to field XI players?’ is a commonly asked question at this time of year. Calculated hits are fine if you believe the player you are bringing in will deliver in the upcoming Gameweeks.

The way the Blanks are falling this season (in 31 and 33) makes it easier to take a -4 to get a player who plays in both Gameweeks, especially for those who plan to use the Free Hit chip in Double Gameweek 32 and the second Wildcard in Gameweek 34.

For example, a -4 to replace Diogo Jota (£6.1m) with Ryan Fraser (£6.2m) this week makes sense as Jota won’t play in 31 or 33 whereas Fraser will make those four points back by just playing 60+ minutes against Newcastle and Burnley if he avoids a booking. Anything from Fraser over the two games and you’re up on the deal.

There seems to be a template Gameweek 31 team forming this week made up of triple Liverpool, Chelsea’s Eden Hazard (£10.9m) and Gonzalo Higuaín (£9.6m), Fraser and Callum Wilson (£6.4m) from Bournemouth, double/triple West Ham defence and Leicester’s Jamie Vardy (£9.0m).

There are plenty of differentials to consider too though for those who want to take on the template. The Leicester midfield trio of James Maddison (£6.7m), Harvey Barnes (£5.5m) and Youri Tielemans (£6.0m) all offer points potential away to Burnley.

Ashley Barnes (£5.7m) is owned by just 3.6% of managers despite scoring six goals in his last ten appearances. There is a strong case to be made for opting for Barnes over Higuain on current form.

Marko Arnautovic (£6.8m) has the ability and the fixture (home to Huddersfield) to be the top-scoring forward for the Gameweek if he is handed a start by Manuel Pellegrini. With a 2pm deadline on Saturday, we may get some early team news. It might be worth holding off on transfers until as late as possible this week.

Miguel Almirón (£6.0m) and Dwight McNeil (£4.4m) are two more midfielders to consider particularly for those on Free Hit this week. Almirón registered his first assist of the season in the win over Everton. McNeil is the ideal first sub for those on Free Hit.

In defence, will we see Charlie Daniels roll back the years and deliver a big haul? He’s a budget-friendly pick at just £4.1m.

Wilson will be coming into my side this week so apologies in advance to anyone who owns him. He was in my squad for three Gameweeks this season (5, 6 and 7) when he scored zero goals. Once transferred-out, he scored 35 points over the next four games and started to do a salute celebration every time he scored just to rub salt in the wound. Watch him blank now for the rest of the season. Don’t say I didn’t warn you.

Captaincy is tough this week if you own both Sadio Mané (£9.9m) and Mohamed Salah (£13.4m). Salah is currently leading the captaincy poll but Mane further strengthened his case for the armband with a brace against Bayern Munich on Wednesday night.

Mané is in the form of his life, he’s surely got to get the nod over Salah now? It’s been highlighted this week that he’s only scored three of his sixteen league goals away from home this season but then he goes and gets a brace in Bavaria to kill off that reasoning.

Whatever happens in the Fulham v Liverpool fixture, there will be carnage if one of Mane/Salah heavily outscores the other.

Good luck for the Gameweek and enjoy your weekend folks.

Sterling and Kamara to Fraser and Arnautovic? (-4)

Can do F.Anderson to Hazard for GW33

    Which one sounds best?

    1. Jim to Wilson -4 (10 playing 31&33)
    2. Jim Doh to Wilson Azpi -8 (11 playing 31&33)

Or Fraser instead of Wilson? But have Brooks already. FH in 32.
    Maybe TC Mane?

2 is better as reasonable to expect azpi to score over 4 points (bookies give chelsea 40% chance of CS). also his ppm is over 4 anyway.

Should I use me Free Hit with this team? Can field 10 with -4.
Currently have 1FT. All other chips are intact.
30 points ahead in my league, rival is using his Free Hit this week.

    Fabianski
    TAA - Robertson - Digne
    Salah - F.Anderson - Biling
    Higuain

    (Speroni - Kolasinac - Wan Bissaka - Pogba - Sterling - Jiminez - Rashford)

Estimate how many points your team will score this week (after hits) and next, then estimate the amount of points you would score this week and next using a FH. Whichever has the bigger difference - play FH then. For bonus points factor in use of of BB/TC chip too.

      1. Deulofale

Or save the FH for later in the season, as his team doesn't beg for a FH in either of these weeks.

As for the WC34, see below. If you WC in 33, you'll probably end up getting 11 players with a fixture, but they then won't have a DGW35. It pays off a lot more to WC in 34 and shape your team for the rest of the season as well as DGW35.

i have sterling and wont get Aguero. first i'll need a differential, second i would shoot my own leg, if i'll get smn with a blank in GW33.
have rash pog lindelof doherty jimenez and tc sterling plus very fine fixtures for my other players that should have games in GW33 like Higuain, Maddison, Salah, Kola, AWB.
will rather safe and take only -4 to start 11 in GW33.

Or could Chelsea, Arsenal, Palace, Leicester, Pool, West Ham also blank in 33?

What's the deal with Antonio? Not first choice I guess, I gambled on him a few weeks back, got a goal, then got Jota's 11 points off the bench for him not playing at Newcastle so it's been fine.

Tempted to ship for -4 (with 9 GW 31 players already - 10 including him) but if he gets a cameo that's -5 to start with and to beat for whoever else I bring in for 7.8 - Lanzini/Barnes etc?

I currently have 6 players for this week but I don't mind at all fielding only 8 with a -4. Not sure a free hit is necessary for 3 extra players when most people will have a similar lineup anyway.

Was that response to me? I'm taking a -4 to field 8 players and will have all the 'main' ones, beyond that I don't see that many players that are very likely to make up the lost points. I certainly won't take a hit for a 3rd defender from a rubbish side.

Blank fixtures in 33 for similar teams to those with a double in 35. Cant maximise DGW35 players if you're having to make an 11 for BGW33 without them.

    2. pingissimus
      3 months, 14 days ago

It could yet be a smart move if Brighton lose in the cup and Spurs have them at home. Likewise the Watford Fulham fixture looks tasty if they go out. Those who are just playing 31 players could be at a major disadvantage.

An alternative I'm also considering is WC32 and FH33.

I think do whatever works for you. There is no reason not to do that (at least no reason to dismiss it!) and thinking outside the group think can get you places. You obviously haven't massively prepared, which isn't ideal but might give you an inadvertent advantage as you're forced into alternative moves, if you're bold enough to take them!

    Wilson, Vardy, Higuain
    Any changes needed?

      Barnes to Maddison ??
Burnley are surprisingly vulnerable@ defending set pieces.
Also consider Higuain to A. Barnes/Arnie IF fit.

Very similar to mine except I prefer Fraser to Barnes. Higuain is a doubt, so we'll have to monitor that one, otherwise Arnie might be worth the punt.

@Jarvish, you're ITK about these things more than most. Does it sound about right that the following teams have a chance of 3 fixtures in GW32-33?

    Chelsea (confirmed)
    Brighton
    Palace (not Watford)
    Spurs (plus Palace)
    Watford (not Palace)
    Saints

(Approx. diminishing in likelihood top to bottom)

      Saints

I'll be looking at Deeney and maybe a Watford defender if they have a double and a GW33 fixture. Hoping for a Palace double instead though, as AWB + Zaha/Bats are more appealing, I think.

            Ha ha
Actually I don't think i can spare a striker position for Deeney.
Aguero, Jimenez, Lukaku/Rash , Higuain all in contention of a dgw. So prefer Deulofeu & Holebas

Sorry that's I meant. If city beat Swansea they would have a dgw in gw 32 and blank in gw 33. That would be perfect for me because my teams set up for gw's 31 & 33 and Fh in 32 and WC in 34. Just don't know when to play the TC probably will have to be on Salah against Huddersfield I guess unless you have a better option Deulofail ?

Hi there everyone may I possibly get some advice on what to do this week please? I have * players available this week and 3 million to spend.

    Fabianski (Boruc)
    Doherty Dhaw Robertson Chilwell (Kelly)
    Jota Pogba Salah Mane (billing)
    Vardy Higuaín (Kamara)

You're not in desperately bad shape. Kamara is dead wood in any GW so Kam->Wilson (or King if you prefer) or another striker who plays in GW31 (Rondon?) if you prefer.

If you're not going to FH for next weeks doubles then it's hard. Each player you add for GW31 will only play once in GW32 so either way you lose. I'd suggest FH next week to pick up lots of players with doubles and take a hit this week so you do something like:
          Kamara + Jota -> Wilson + Fraser/Maddison

Can't decide whether I want Ake or Maddison or even to double up on King and Wilson. Ake goal threat and likely CS. Maddison set pieces but inconsistent. King could easy get just as much as wilson

    Got 0.9 ITB

    1) Puncheon to Brooks (field 11 for GW31)
    2) AWB to Ake (field 10 for GW31 but keep AWB value and potential that he plays GW33)

    Both exactly 0.9.

Would only go 2 if Puncheon is going to play but that doesn't look likely so I am leaning on going 1 and saving AWB value/potential 33 fixture. However, I have noticed that Siewart has a lot of injuries though? Any insight?

Looking at FPLstats, trying to work out who might rise and fall tonight (I know it's a mug's game). What do you reckon? Basically trying to work out whether to hold off until pressers or catch rises/ avoid falls tonight:

    Risers?
    Maddison: 96.3 (3 arrows)
    Wilson: 82.7 (3 arrows)
    Vardy: 77.2 (3 arrows)
    Fraser: 57.8 (3 arrows)
    Mané: 50.1 (3 arrows)Hazard: 36.2 (3 arrows)

    Fallers?
    Doherty: -62.2 (3 arrows)
    Pogba: -76.8 (3 arrows)
    Jimi: -78.7 (3 arrows)
    Son: -80.6 (3 arrows)
    Kun: -89.2 (3 arrows)
    Salah(!): -92.7 (3 arrows)

Those are the main ones. Which or the above do you expect will happen tonight?

I've defected to Football Fix for this. They seem more dependable

Right now they have up tonight

      Maddison
      Wilson
      Vardy

      Down tomorrow

      Aguero
      Mo

Cheers. Interesting as I switched away from FFFix earlier in season due to unreliability!
