The best premium defenders in Eliteserien Fantasy 2019

Premium defenders have historically played an important part in Eliteserien Fantasy.

In the last two seasons, we have seen a host of options playing out of position, while Rosenborg’s clean sheet potential has been easily the most reliable in the league.

With Eirik Horneland arriving at the Lerkendal Stadion from Haugesund with his more rigid style and preference for being compact at the back, the reigning champions could continue their form into the 2019 campaign.

Rosenborg left-back Birger Meling (7,0) and centre-half colleague Tore Reginiussen (7,0) have been priced up as the most expensive defenders in the game this year. I would not be surprised to see the former finish as one of the top scoring defenders again this time around. Considering that Horneland’s left-back at Haugesund Alexander Stølås (6,5) was the highest scoring defender in 2018, I don’t think Rosenborg’s new manager will limit Meling’s attacking potential.

However, goalkeeper Andre Hansen (7,0) might struggle to justify his price-tag this season. He was the go-to keeper last year, but with Horneland’s tighter style, he may face fewer shots and therefore find it harder to tag on the extras for saves and bonus. Considering that Meling can still help you cover Rosenborg’s strong defence, and bring in attacking threat, he may be the better choice. Meanwhile, there are other defenders at the same club that are 0,5 cheaper like Vegar Eggen Hedenstad (6,5).

Brann’s Vito Wormgoor (6,5) still stands out as one of the top defensive picks in 2019. He’s more expensive than he was last season but still plays for one of the best defensive sides in the league. He might still be on penalties and is likely to attract a lot of bonus points too.

The already mentioned Stølås had an incredible season for Haugesund last time out. Thanks to his amazing left foot, he scored four goals and assisted eight more, keeping 12 clean sheets too. However, there are big question marks over Haugesund’s defence, as they have lost their first choice goalkeeper, right-back and one of their best central defenders. FKH have replaced all of those players in the last few days but it remains to be seen whether the quality of signings will be good enough.

When everyone thought age was catching up with Odd right-back Espen Ruud (6,5), he burst back onto the scene at the end of last season going on a crazy run of attacking returns, scoring eight goals and providing three assists across the campaign. I’m a bit unsure if he can justify the 6,5 price tag, but we are talking about a defender who is always capable of big scores, with an Eliteserien hat-trick under his belt.

I do think Odd might be better at the back this season, but I’m more keen on left back Birk Risa (5,5) or goalkeeper Sondre Rossbach (5,5) who are better priced in my opinion. Risa might not have the same offensive potential as Ruud, but he is still fairly attacking and could be used out-of-position (although it isn’t very likely). Meanwhile, Rossbach was among the goalkeepers with most bonus last season.

At Molde, the signing of Martin Bjørnbak (6.0) could mean more clean sheets for Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s club. The centre-back is a bonus magnet and comes with good goal threat for a defender. He silently ended up as the eighth highest scoring player in his position while playing for Bodø/Glimt, in 2018, despite keeping just five clean sheets. Bjørnbak scored four goals and racked up 14 bonus points in 29 games, as well as scoring five goals in 28 games for Bodø/Glimt in the second tier in 2017.

Molde’s full-backs Kristoffer Haugen (6,0) and Kristoffer Haraldseid (5,5) could also be decent picks if Molde’s defence manages to tighten up this year, as both have decent assist potential. Haraldseid assisted five for Haugesund last year, while Haugen assisted five and scored two for Molde.

I’m not sure if we count 5,5 defenders as premium, but I’ll mention the Sarpsborg full-backs Joachim Thomassen (5,5) and Jon-Helge Tveita (5,5). Both are attacking in their style, and play for a Sarpsborg side that I expect to improve their league form a lot. Amin Askar (5,5) is still around and could play on either side as a full-back or as a midfielder. He’s been injured for most of the pre-season, so Tveita and Thomassen should be more nailed-on at the start. Both of them have been playing as a part of a back-three in the last few friendlies because of injuries to the centre-backs so we might have to wait and see what their role is for the 2019 season.

Goalkeeper Aleksander Vasyutin (5,5) came in last season and put in some impressive performances for Sarpsborg. He could be one of the best options between the sticks this year, although team-mate Aslak Falch (5,0) has featured a lot in pre-season as well. Sarpsborg also have central defenders available at 5,0.

This a RMT but please bare in mind that i have no prior knowledge of the eliteserien nor do I have any knowledge of teams or players so this is simply guesswork

    Mcdermott
    Eggen hedenstadt, Teniste, stolas, adekugde
    Akintola, Finne, aursnes
    Bye, Boli, bamba

    Wichne, Ronald hernades, diop, vetlessen

I think my bench is really weak but hoping the staring 11 makes up for it. Any transfers or tips appreciated.

Personally I would pick Reginiussen or Meling from Rosenborg.

I'm a bit unsure about Bye, but there is the DGW early on. With Kastrati a doubt he should play.

Bamba also looks like a dodgy pick right now, might not make the XI for GW1

Meling pulled out of the Norway squad with an injury, but we don't know if he's a doubt for GW1 yet or not.

There's an international break going on man. Adekugbe is with Canada whilst Shala captained Kosovo to a famous draw against Denmark last night.

Apparently he has taken a massive steps this pre season. Making those overlapping runs and putting in crosses regularly. Could be a great asset this year (although I never trust us to keep clean sheets).

Funnily enough there are more Norway based players in the Canada squad (2) than in the Norwegian squad (1).

This. Both are nailed in the team, although it will be interesting to see how Vega get on. Could challenge for a spot in the team.

Shala does play deep in a 4231 for Kosovo. How do you rates his chances of being used there for Vålerenga?

Unless there's a major injury crisis I don't think he will be used in a holding role. Lekven-Abu will be first choice with Israelsson-Myhre as backup. Might be deployed in a midfield three in tougher away games but apart from that can't see it happening on a regular basis.

Vega is an interesting one. From a fantasy perspective I hope he stays quiet but from a VIF fan perspective I hope he hits the ground running 😆

Hi all, any update on Meling or Kastrati? Presume the former will be ok, but not sure about the latter?
Second, any of the cheaper valerenga midfields worth getting in, have up to 6 or 6.5 with a downgrade elsewhere for one (am stocking up for GW2). Cheers

New to Eliteserien fantasy and thought I'd give it a go. Here's my team:

    Barli
    Bjornbak Wormgoor Pereira
    Aasmunsden Finne Aursnes Tonne
    Vilhjalmson Boli Mos

    McDermott, Lokberg, Ronald Hernandez, Sell

    Any good?

    1. MTPockets

Best getting advice on specifics from Niemi or similar, but first thing I'd decide is approach to DGW2 (Brann, Valerenga, Molde, Kristiansund). Can setup for it from the start with some risks to starting 11 and perhaps play 2 captains/spissrush, or ignore and play Rich Uncle (unlimited budget free hit).

That will determine how many from those teams you want vs. focusing on other fixtures + showing-preseason-form players (eg. Strand Larsen, Rashani, Berg, Rossbach, Rosenborg defender)

This is a link to preseason results. Maybe a bit much for someone new to the game, but the Toppscorer and Assist tabs could be useful: https://www.dropbox.com/s/1nvm1cblp655ysq/Sesongoppkj%C3%B8ring%202019.xlsx?dl=0

Vilhjalmsson got a hattrick in yesterday's friendly so he's back in my sights for sure. But if Ohi will be starting I want him too. Very undecided on the Shala/Knudtzon etc spot in my squad if I get Vilhjalmsson in.

Decreases the chances of Knudtzon starting up front unless they play 4-4-2 which seems unlikely given the strength of their midfield.

If Knudtzon is still expected to start on the left of a 4-3-3 I might expect him to be an even better option.

Thoughts on this team? Will have to transfer out a Molde player if I make any more transfers due to having 4:

              Arnebrott (McDermott)

Ruud / Ronald Hernandez / Jonathan Tollas / Wormgoor (Haraldseid)

              Eikrem (C) / Finne (V) / Aursnes (Kalludra / Rolantsson)

Ohi / Strand Larsen / Bye

Rolantsson and Ruud may be changed if I do, possibly Ohi to Vih.

I would look more carefully at your goal keepers for a start.
                Defence is OK.
Mids - Lindseth is an interesting pick at 6.5 there are lots of picks at that value with better fixtures. Look at ownership stats if you are unsure. the better picks will be higher owned. If you have good eliteserien knowledge you can pick differentials but sticking with the masses to start and then modify as your knowledge grows may get you a team that you are happy with.
                Good luck

Just how essential might Eikrem potentially end up becoming?

He's so expensive when there is a plethora of talented midfielders for quite literally millions cheaper.

I personal think Bjornbak, Hestad/Aursnes and Ohi are a great triad to go with but Eikrem feels like he could explode and do a Salah.

If I brought Eikrem in I'd have to free up more funds which would make keeping Boli really difficult to do. Do we know who is going to be on penalties and free kicks for Molde this season?

Eikrem and some of the more expensive prime players may come to be essential at certain stages in the season and I would recommend picking a couple of prime players. But and it is a big but It is good ( but not essentia)l to have a reasonable start to the season with players that will start games and potentially gain you team value as well as points. Eikrem is just one of whole bunch of players that could start big, or he could start slow and have big returns later in the season.
The two wild cards are the most powerful chips in the box so playing them to set your side up for fixture runs and form players will get you there in the end.
We all start with the same budget and increasing that buying power will benefit. Pick a good team of starters for GW1 to GW5 and be prepared to make adjustments to gain TV and not overly worry about OR. After GW7 gains in OR will propel a well adjusted side into the top 1k ( or higher). Once in the top echelon with careful play a good finish is achievable.
Sorry that was a really long winded way to say Eikrem is not essential yet. Stick with the Mould three you have and see how it pans out. Good luck for the season 🙂

Apparently Teniste is a doubt for GW1 which could mean Rolantsson reverse OOP.

I think Eikrem is a risk at that price. Had a blinder second half last season but Hestad is a whole 1.5m cheaper and I don’t think there will be that much difference between them.

                        Plus.. Hestad scored earlier

Ok thanks, what about Aursnes as an options?

Also what was the Molde line up earlier and who got assists?

I think Hestad is the safer pick. Moulds have a really strong midfield this season. Aursnes should play but from what I gather Hestad is the safer bet and I think he’s the better player.

                              Line up:
                              Linde
Haraldseid, Bjornbak, Forren, Haugen; Ellingsen, Eikrem, Aursnes, Hestad, Ohi & Knudtzon.

Don’t know if Knudtzon played up top or not though.

Hestad and Ohi scored. Molde Twitter have Mostrom and Ulland Anderson as scoring one each but other sites say both were Mostroms goals.

Not sure on assists. Can’t seem to find that info anywhere.

                                    No worries.

Knudtzon has been scoring quite regularly in pre-season but I don’t know enough about him compared to other midfielders.

Looks like he might have played a bit higher up today.

                                    Definitely one to consider though.

Will Ohi now at Molde affect Boli in any way? Does it make him a better or worse option?

My current front three is Mos, Boli and Strand Larsen. Ohi at Molde could be an interesting option at 1.0m less than Boli – which would also make it possible to spread funds. On the other hand, Stabæk have a potentially better opening fixture, and Boli was great last season.

Don't think it makes much difference. Boli went up front when new manager joined and stayed there, scoring a lot.
Probably makes Brynildsen a better option though

So Boli is still a good option for GW1 onwards then?

Brynhildsen at 5.5 is interesting. Currently I have Mateo Lopez at 5.5 in my team, which might be a gamble. A decent starting option for the same price is something to consider.

Didn't think of it before just now, but I've managed to triple up on Stabæk already. Børkeeiet at 4.5 and Ronald Hernández at 4.0 can easily be replaced though.

I think Borkeeiet and Hernandez are must haves for their prices.

8.5m for two players who will play now and then for an OK team with some potential for points. Dunno how else you could spread those funds for surplus players any better to be honest. I have both.

That's a good point. Think I read on Twitter a week or so ago that there's maybe one 4.0 def option from Mjøndalen that will see some playing time. That could be a Hernández replacement of course.

I don't have him in my current draft (or any from stb). But that's because planning for DGW2
Otherwise has a good GW1 fixture so would have him. GW2-4 fixtures less appealing for stb def, but as fillers then yeah sure

100% they’re both enablers who might play. Probably highest chance of players in that price range of playing, so that’s why I’d keep them. Only other STB player would be Boli or perhaps Brynhildsen maybe.

My initial thoughts were to have:

Boil, Ohi & S. Larsen then ship Boli out for Vilhjalmsson GW2 for the double.

I’ve convinced myself Hestad is a better option than Eikrem what with Shala & Finne being cheap options too.

Unless I’m missing something I think that’s a relatively safe bet to start out with. Have a feeling Boli is gonna haul first GW and I’m not missing out on that.

There's definitely the ownership to think of re. Boli as well. He will no doubt be in a lot of teams in GW1. I might up end up with the same front three. Have Mos as my second premium option at the moment, but Ohi at 0.5 less might be just as good.

Struggling with the Molde mids though. Fear Eikrem, but he's expensive. Knudtzon, Eikrem, Hestad etc. can all deliver.

Will be interesting to see how Molde line up this season. Their midfield is so strong.

If Knudtzon is pushed higher up... If Eikrem comes into early form... Ulland Anderson - will he start ahead of Aursnes/Hestad etc..

I think Eikrem is definitely a huge risk to go in with though as he’s so expensive. At 10m he’d slot straight in.

Yeah, they've put together a great midfield before this season. Guess Eikrem is nailed to start, which also might be why he's at 11.0 instead of 10.0. Anyone else are perhaps a gamble re. playing time.

Tempted to just punt with Knudtzon, but I'm only a couple of downgrades away from finding a spot for Eikrem.

Knudtzon is fighting with EUA and Ohi for a starting spot. Seems like he'll start at LW over EUA in GW1, but he can also threaten Ohi for game time early on if James isn't fit.

He's not nailed on to start though. Hestad and Eikrem should be fairly nailed.

Think I’m pretty set on Bjornbak, Hestad and Ohi.

Reckon Ohi is gonna hit the ground running and be an integral part of this Molde team.

I’m betting Molde win the league this season and him being amongst top scorers in the league.

As a Rosenborg fan I worry Molde will win the title comfortably this year. Don't like the look of the Rosenborg team at the moment. Injuries as well.

I think it could make Boli a slightly worse option as Ohi seemed to drop into a slightly more creative role last season, they had a really good partnership. But more emphasis will be on youngsters like Brynhildsen. Also Kassi could be nicely priced if he can regain his form after being out for the whole of 2018.

Bjørnback went of with what could be an injury today, monitor closely. Forren maybe not the best option from Molde, look at Haugen or Haraldseid if you want from there, if more open you could look at upgrade to Meling, or options like Karamoko og Stølås.

Brann defender Teniste injured on international duty, might still make GW1 but if not Rolantsson likely moved back so I'd not risk him in a team right now.

Better options than Bye out there imo, but thats just me.

Is Teniste injury the reason they apparently played 3-5-2 in the last friendly?

Nah, Teniste was away at international duty anyway, same as Rolantsson, hence the formation shift. The injury came out of international duty today.

Leikvoll Moberg with a brace and an assist in the first 20 minutes vs. Tromsø. Now there's a break in the game because they have to shovel the pitch, it's snowing heavily.

Leikvoll Moberg up to 7 goals and 5 assists in 9 pre-season games now. 5.0 midfielder.

                                              Nice one mate.

Could you recommend an app or website to keep up to date with goals and assists?

The ones I’ve been using seem to be incomplete.

Most every app or site is lacking in norwegian pre-season info, even the norwegian ones.... official team twitters maybe best source..

Potentially need a misfielder around 5.0 - 5.5 to play every week. Could Leikvoll Moberg be an option? Watched very few Glimt games last season.

Looking red-hot at the moment, he's pressed to keep that left box-to-box spot though, Konradsen vying for a spot in the team. His pre-season has been excellent though so I have a hard time seeing how he could be dropped...

One to watch then probably. Have Mateo Lopez in that 5.0-5.5 mid spot in my team at the moment – but that would be a punt more than anything.

Any thoughts on how Ohi will impact James? Does it make him a worse pick, or will they okay together with James being the focal point? If so, is the 1.5m difference justified?

Probably straight competition and in my opinion Ohi ranks ahead of James, making James a much worse pick now.

Would appreciate anyone a bit more informed than me to have a look at this, see if I’ve made any horrific decisions:

                                              Barli (McDermott)

Rismark, Wormgoor, Bjornbak/Stolas (R. Hernandez, Ulvestad)

Finne, Hestad, L. Moberg, Shala (Brynhildsen)

                                              Ohi, Vilhjalmsson, Strand Larsen.

I know I have two quite cheap midfielders in there but trying to get the balance between all three areas seems quite tricky.

Doesn't look a disaster at least 🙂 Two notes right off:
                                                - The Bjørnback injury possibility although you've marked off alternative already so guess you're following that.
                                                - Selecting L.Moberg looks a good move based on pre-season, but be aware they have a HEAVY opening so if you go with him, keep patience until GW4-5 before having the biggest expectations... I do like the pick though, just be aware of the fixtures...

Do you think double Brann defenders is acceptable? I feel like it could pay dividends early season as they’re surely highly % chance of 2 CS in first 3 games?

Also I think both those defenders can get attacking returns so not the worst choices?

Should be worth it if you could figure out who will play regular. Teniste was the other lock-in for the XI, but injury reports coming from international duty makes for a wait-and-see situation there.

Nothing terribly wrong imo. Very similar to my draft inc Strand Larsen, except have Eikrem and cheap 5th mid/4th def. Not sure if that approach will be final one though (vs having 3 DGW fwds)

Trying to get a good balance between midfield and attack which seems quick tricky if you want some premium defenders too.

I really like Molde this season and think Valengra will score bags of goals too.

Am wary about no Rosenborg though but maybe after DGW2...

Will have to make a decision regarding final attacker (Vilhj) and 4/5th midfielders.

Would just be wary with the defence. Rismark will have competition if they play 4-3-3. Think Stølås less appealing defensively without Haraldseid and Skjerve next to him.

Thomas Amang training with KBK who are looking to sign him on loan. Apparently Kastrati didn't train again yesterday. Could be a very exciting option, never high in the pecking order for Molde but still had some impressive games over the last couple of seasons.
