Abject Brighton set to boost Wolves and Spurs assets

Brighton ensured that Double Gameweek 34 will live long in the memory as one of the worst in Fantasy Premier League history.

Across their two home games, for which they were heavily backed defensively, they conceded seven goals and did not net a single one of their own.

Owners of their players may already be considering moving them on, especially with the Bench Boost set for extensive use in Double Gameweek 35.

We haven’t got a great deal to say about this match, as Brighton’s performance both on Tuesday and in recent weeks tells us only one thing…

Brighton 0-2 Cardiff

Goals: Nathaniel Mendez-Laing (£4.8m), Sean Morrison (£4.7m)

Assists: Junior Hoilett (£5.0m), Victor Camarasa (£4.5m)

Another dismal performance for Brighton on Tuesday night has all but written off their use to Fantasy managers for the 2018/19 season, as they are pulled perilously closer to the relegation zone. The Seagulls were backed so heavily in Double Gameweek 34 because of their home form, even in spite of dreadful results away from the Amex Stadium. However, they failed to deliver even against favourable opponents. With trips to Wolves and Tottenham coming up in Double Gameweek 35, and Arsenal and Manchester City awaiting them in the final two matches of the season, managers are already considering shipping their Seagulls out, with good reason.

Shane Duffy (£4.8m) was the chief disappointment as he managed just one point across two fixtures. Once again, Brighton were found wanting defensively, this time conceding twice to a side that had not scored away from home in the Premier League since February. In fact, it was the first time all season that Cardiff had enjoyed a lead at half-time. In the end, it proved to be the Bluebirds first away top-flight win by two clear goals since 1956. In both matches of Double Gameweek 34, there have been unexpected new levels of low for Brighton to reach.

In all fairness, there was not much Mat Ryan (£4.4m) could have done about Nathaniel Mendez-Laing‘s (£4.8m) opening goal. Receiving the ball from Junior Hoilett (£5.0m), he curled an effort from distance into the top corner, very much like the Canadian who assisted him did twice already this season. However, Sean Morrison‘s (£4.7m) second-half header, that removed another point from Brighton defenders, could have been easily avoided with better organisation.

That seems to have been their downfall in recent weeks, especially in home matches. In their first season and three-quarters in the Premier League, they lost just once at the Amex to a side outside the top six. Since Gameweek 26, they have been easily overturned by Burnley, Southampton, Bournemouth and now, even Cardiff.

While Brighton’s defence has been exceptionally poor, their attack has been even worse in recent weeks. The Seagulls have not scored in any of their last four matches, and are bottom of the league for every relevant attacking underlying statistic. In that time the Seagulls rank 20th for number of shots in the box, shots on target, accuracy, number of big chances and goal conversion rate. Furthermore, they are the first top-flight side to lose five matches on the bounce without scoring in all competitions since Aston Villa in October 2014.

Despite reverting to the tried and tested 4-4-1-1 formation for the first time in some weeks against Cardiff, Chris Hughton’s side really did offer very little on Tuesday night. Glenn Murray (£6.4m) came in for Florin Andone (£5.0m), while Pascal Groß (£6.7m) made his first start since Gameweek 28 in the number 10 role. Neither player managed a shot on target.

The only player who offered much was the returning Solly March (£4.7m), deployed on the right wing in his first start since Gameweek 28. No Brighton player shot more often in the box than him, while he was top for chances created too.

Crucially, the fact that the Seagulls are so blunt in their attacks right now bodes well for those backing Wolves and Spurs defensive assets in Double Gameweek 35.

Meanwhile, Cardiff players proved us many wrong by securing two places in the Double Gameweek 34 Dream Team. Morrison’s clean sheet and goal earned him a total of 16 points across his two matches, while Victor Camarasa (£4.5m) managed seven points after assisting the centre-back’s headed strike.

Whether either can seriously command Fantasy appeal between now and the end of the season remains to be seen though. Camarasa will naturally receive more attention given his price and how well he fits into midfield structures, while Morrison’s goal was just his first of the season. It’s a home match with Liverpool up next, with Crystal Palace and Manchester United still to come. Maybe their next best opportunity for points will be the Gameweek 36 trip to Fulham.

The desire to stay in the Premier League was evident in Cardiff’s play on Tuesday night and it was clear that they were considerably more focussed in their hopes to stay up than Brighton were. That could be the deciding factor in the Bluebirds’ upcoming performances as we reach that stage of the season where aims and objectives, or lack of them, for teams start to play a part in our Fantasy decisions.

There were a number of injury considerations for Neil Warnock to clear up after the game. Harry Arter (£4.9m) missed out on the game entirely after, strangely, picking up a problem when coming off the pitch against Burnley. Meanwhile, Aron Gunnarsson (£4.4m) had to come off in the second half at Brighton with a back spasm.

“He just nicked his calf, believe it or not, running off when he was substituted. There are some silly injuries out there. I couldn’t risk him tonight.” – Neil Warnock

“Yeah we didn’t want to risk him any more. He’s got a spasm in his back. He’ll be alright. He just needs it. I was glad when he came off. Bacuna was like Pogba when he came on.” – Neil Warnock

Brighton and Hove Albion XI (4-4-1-1): Ryan; Bernardo, Dunk, Duffy, Bruno; March, Pröpper, Stephens, Jahanbakhsh (Izquierdo 69′); Groß (Andone 54′); Murray.

Cardiff City XI (4-2-3-1): Etheridge; Bennett, Ecuele Manga, Morrison, Peltier; Ralls, Gunnarsson (Bacuna 55′); Hoilett, Camarasa, Mendez-Laing (Harris 80′); Niasse (Zohoré 84′).

Feels like 4/0 versus minimum of 8/8?

Also have trippier, Kolasinac, Duffy, Valero...

Vardy + J.Simpson for Wilson and Laporte? Would give me:

    Leno
    Trent Valery Laporte
    Salah Mane Fraser Eriksen
    Aguero Jiminez Wilson

I know Vardy might do ok this week but this is a longer term decision (bench boosting next week, TC this)

Agree, but let's say a couple of players get injured in the UCL tonight and need replacing - would you replace them, and still get rid of Duffy for a hit? Or risk keeping him?

Duffy isn't going to drop and transfer decisions at this point should not be dictated by TV. At this point having all possible information available is the most important thing. Any of Eriksen, Son, Salah, Mane, Robertson, Aguero, KDB or Sterling plus any Arsenal or Chelsea players you might have could potentially pick up an injury. I already have Deeney to deal with, I don't want to take a -4 to transfer out Duffy to find that I need to replace a big hitter.

It's very easy to knee jerk. 2 Weeks ago we were all set for Kolasinac & Lacazette. I retained Kola and to be honest, I'm concerned for his minutes now. I think he will play Europa league and his league minutes will be reduced.
This week, after two admittedly atrocious results against two of the worst teams in the league, we are all thinking about ditching Brighton assets. Like most I have Ryan & Duffy, I think it would be sensible to remove one of them, maybe Ryan as his Ceiling is lower. If I had 3 Brighton assets then I'd definitely get rid of one for a hit.

Saved by Sterling and Pogba to get to 42 points

Lost out by 34 points. Doh.
Maybe it's best to not plan for DGWs any more...

First time ever I missed the deadline, so Ryan, Dunk, Duffy and Sterling 🙁 sat on the bench.

G/W 33 team scored 92 points with VVD (c) and notable performances from Milo, Perez, Lascelles, Wilson and Heaton. 🙂

      Unbelievable Jeff!

Rough: Just like everyone, Ryan and Duffy(c). Internet issue before deadline meant I was stuck with Rondon in starting XI and Fraser on bench.

Smooth: Having Button as backup GK restricted my Knockaert move 😆 Internet issue was handy as I decided to TC Duffy but thankfully it didnt go through.

Pogba, Salah, Mane, Van Dijk and small green this week were some of the positives.

      Wildcard! So, obviously, rough.
Shipped Wilson and Pogba out, obviously.
Brought in Duffy and Murray (c).
46 points instead of the 69 if I had left my team alone.

Smooth: got points from my double Spurs attack (Son & Eriksen), and got Robertson’s clean sheet in for Trippier. Also, my cheap 4th mid this week was Camarasa.

So, not the tale of unremitting woe some others have...

      ROUGH
Triple Brighton defence and captain Duffy. Ditched Sterling and Pogba on wildcard in GW33. Vardy blanked.

      SMOOTH
Kept hold of Wilson on wildcard, Camarasa returned with 7, kept three Liverpool who all returned 8-9pts each.
59 all out and a small rise from 130k to 120k... I've put hours of planning into the WC and chips over the last few weeks and gone from 250k to 120k... really wanted to be top 100k by now but I guess it's still positive.

An actual smooth! (After my 16 point rough in GW31)

Decided the BB looked better this week and it gave me Fraser (16), Leno (6), Bednarek (2) and a total score of 78 all out.

Rough - defence was a shambles. 5pts from 6 fixtures. TAA stuck on the bench. Went Digne over Boly at last minute on WC. Son(c) over Sterling due to thinking he was more nailed on to start. Laca being benched.

Smooth - midfield did reasonably well. Assist each for Eriksen, Son and Martial and goals from Sterling. My red arrow could have been worse.

Rough:- Son and Aguero in for Vardy and Hazard didn't set the world on fire. Son, Lacazette, Kolasinac benching.

Smooth:- Didn't captain Duffy, so Son coming on for his 3 minute cameo was ok. Fraser and Valery off the bench for the other 2 was super. Small green arrow and up to 90k.

Rough: Wildcard. My pre-WC earned roughly 35 points more than my new team. My 92 point rival lead changed to a 34 point lead.

Smooth: Changed captain from Ryan to Eriksen.

Smooth: Etheridge outscoring Ryan, Duffy, Dunk and Murray combined

Had Fraser, Mane, Sterling, Robbo and Captained Salah and wound up on 79 points. Up to 90k OR after being 370k 6 weeks ago

Rival WC and got 34 points

      Saved a FT

Rough: Laca, Periera and I only have 4 DGWers for next week at the moment, so could all fall apart!

Smooth: midfield scored 55pts. No WC, which meant keeping Mane, Salah and Pogba. Moura in as a differential was nice.

      Wilson on bench with 15

ROUGH for my ML rival who captained Son with Pogba (VC) and Brooks first on his bench. If Son hadn't come on for 4 minutes, he'd have been 19pts up. Lucky escape for me.

33 all out lads. Can anyone better that? Highlights that really set me apart from the crowd were the ownership of Deeney for -2, and Sigurdsson blanking against a Fulham side that last kept a clean sheet in 1975.

My rank went down 10k between Sunday evening and the end of the gameweek, despite having 3 players and a captain play in that time.

37 points down on where I would have been if I'd slipped into a coma pre deadline instead of spending about 10 hours across the week on optimising the perfect wildcard squad.

Lol that did make me laugh especially the coma comment.

I also would have been about 30 points better off if no changes were made from previous week. Brought in Duffy ultimately for minus 4 and benched TAA and also captained Duffy last minute instead of Salah. Also played Ryan over Dubravka so all in all happy with the 60 odd points and still have 40 point lead in ML.

This game does make you wonder why you bother sometimes!

Yeah similar moves to me, but you clearly also hung onto some players who actually performed lol. 60 points is a very useful score this week, I'd be very happy with that.

Just the Pog and Wilson. Wilson was nearly transferred out too for Kun but decided I would be really annoyed if captained Duffy and he scored, which is what happened in the end.

Works both ways though as made minus 8 few weeks back and came out 20 points better off but this time went the other way. Swings and roundabouts and all that!

Sean Tobin only got 1 point more than you did after playing his wildcard for 34 points and slipping from 28th to 40th overall.
But the average wildcard score in the top 10k was only 47 (compared with 56.5 for non-chip teams) - the damage done in a higher scoring game-week could have been a lot worse.

Rough - Wildcarded, took out Pogba, Salah, Fraser, Wilson, TAA
Went Kun over Sterling (unlucky), brought in Knockaert (very unlucky), used my WC to switch Redmond to JWP (so bad it hurts), Robbo on the bench (my bad). Nobody did anything, i got 2 assists, no goals, no clean sheets

i got 24 points, with a GW rank of 6.1m, i didn't even realise there were that many teams in the game!

Smooth - it still could have been worse, i didn't do Vardy to Deeney, that might have been the final straw. Captain Son was actually a success for me, i was tempted with Knockaert.

This season has been unrelentingly awful

Rough: Main rough was Deeney, as I wanted to save my FT for two in GW36. Duffy(c), Ryan, Doherty, Jimenez.

Smooth: New wildcard recruits KdB, Eriksen and Son all returned and held Salah and Robertson. Hazard and Vardy didn't sting me having sold on wildcard though Pogba was a pain. ML Rival captained Son, so only made up 3 points on me going Duffy(c). One more week ticked off, he's running ut of them now..

Slipped from 19k to 26k, 5.1m GW rank after last weeks 6.3k GW rank! Madness!

      Smooth - Moura (C) at £6.7m = 42 Points

Lucas Moura basically beat the other 10 players combined at a fraction of the cost.

Smooth: Tottenham (Son, Eriksen and (c) Moura), Deeney benched

Overall happy with how the WC went (73 points, green arrow), will however have to take a hit or two to fix BHA and Deeney mess. No regrets though, I'd probably do it again to be honest.

Transfers: Jimi (1) and Duffy (1) in, Auba (6) and Lascelles (7) out, but what have played TAA (8). So just the 16 point loss there.

      Smooth:

2 points from 3 defenders in 5 games - thank you Doherty, Duffy and Dunk
Lukaku captain - yes, I know, the puntiest of punts, but West Ham had conceded 9 in the previous 4 games
Vardy and Aguero 2 points each
      No Bournemouth at all

      Smooth:
Had a last tinker with team on Friday evening and brought Moura in

      Rough:
I always seem to get my hits wrong.
This time I sold Fraser (16) & David Luiz (1) for Son (4) & Duffy (1) for a 4 point hit (immediate loss: 16 points).
I also benched Milivojevic (8) and Alisson (7) instead of Hazard (2) and Ryan (1), losing another 12 points.
And I captained Ryan - same disaster as those who captained Duffy.

      Smooth:
But I did retain Wilson (15), Pogba (15), Mane (9) and Robertson (6), resulting in a game-week score of 60 (-4) and little green arrows in most of my mini-leagues.

Rougher than a butcher's dog. 41 pts. Played wild monkey like most and naturally ended up going down the gurgler.

Smooth: TAA and Salah. Benching Deeney. Spuds assets.

Rough: double BHA d and Duffy c. The worst thing is that those I got rid of all scored well. That's the kicker. Taken me a week to get over it involving a rage Deeney->Kun transfer in the middle of this despairing storm.
