Chip Strategy

How effective was the Bench Boost chip last season?

The Bench Boost chip has the potential to make a significant difference for those who use it in Double Gameweek 35.

That’s what last season’s events taught us as the first real opportunity for that chip brought great success, especially among the top 10,000 managers.

In Double Gameweek 34 of the 2017/18 season, those at that level of the game who deployed the Bench Boost averaged 94.9 points.

How did Bench Boosters do in DGW34 last season?

Chip UsedPointsPoints for all other managersPoints for managers who used no chips
Bench Boost94.977.874.7
Triple Captain83.384.574.7
Free Hit80.284.474.7
Wildcard83.284.374.7

As you can see from the table above, the Bench Boost was easily the most successful chip played in that round of action.

Those in the top 10k who went for the Triple Captain scored an average of 83.3 points, Free Hitters were looking at 80.2 and Wildcarders 83.2.

Crucially, the Bench Boosters in the top 10k on average scored 20.2 points more than regular teams.

Two Southampton defenders, in particular, helped their owners to impressive points-hauls.

Ryan Bertrand (£4.8m) and Jan Bednarek (£4.0m) got attacking returns in their first Double Gameweek 34 fixture, a 3-2 defeat at home to Chelsea, before keeping clean sheets in a 0-0 draw at Leicester a few days later.

However, it was still disappointing for Fantasy managers who looked to clubs such as Chelsea and Manchester United as rotation between their two fixtures limited their potential.

Romelu Lukaku (£10.8m), Eden Hazard (£11.0m) and Willian (£7.1m) were among the players benched for their second matches of the Double Gameweek.

Meanwhile, Liverpool options went largely overlooked, but Trent Alexander-Arnold (£5.5m) got an assist and a clean sheet, Mohamed Salah (£13.2m) scored, and so did Sadio Mané (£10.1m) in a 3-0 win over Bournemouth.

That meant they went some way to matching the key captain contenders from that week, with Salah and Mané both scoring the same number of goals as Lukaku, Harry Kane (£12.6m) and Jamie Vardy (£9.2m) despite having one fewer fixture than them.

Of the top 16 points-scorers of Double Gameweek 34, 10 were players with two fixtures and six had just one match.

How did Bench Boosters in DGW37 do last season?

members

In the end, Double Gameweek 37 proved to be the most popular week for the Bench Boost chip last season – although the Triple Captain was the most deployed chip that week.

After 22.18% overall usage in Double Gameweek 34, it was used by 28.72% for the penultimate Gameweek of the season.

However, it proved not to be quite as successful compared to those who deployed a few weeks earlier.

As you can see from the bar chart above, the average points in the last 10 Gameweeks of the season were higher for those who Bench Boosted in Double Gameweek 34.

There was a 7.4-point gap between the average scores for Bench Boosters in Double Gameweek 34 compared to Double Gameweek 37.

Who will the top 10k be boosting?

By looking at the most-owned players among the top 10,000 managers, we can get a decent idea of some of the players who will be added to Gameweek scores on the Bench Boost this week.

Obviously, the more fashionable players in the midfield and forward departments tend to be on the more expensive side, with Diogo Jota (£6.2m) the cheapest across the two positions in the above graphic.

It is likely in defence where the difference will be made with plenty of cheaper options, some of whom were probably on the bench in Double Gameweek 34.

Matt Doherty (£5.3m) and Jan Valery (£4.1m) are owned by more than 40% of managers inside the top 10k and both have two fixtures in Double Gameweek 35.

However, the latter is currently an injury doubt and his owners will have to wait on Ralph Hasenhüttl’s next press conference.

Troy Deeney (£5.9m), suspended for three matches after a red card against Arsenal, is another problem to be solved in the next few days, as he was the third most popular forward on Wildcards in the top 10k.

I doubt both Leeds and Sheffield Utd will go up.

As a Blade, I can confirm we are shocking in the playoffs.

Its a huge momentum blow to whoever finishes 3rd. I fancy Villa or Bristol City to join Norwich and Leeds.

Unfortunately so, it's a shame as those three teams certainly deserve to be promoted this year.

Look at the fixtures, Burnley are 8 points clear of Cardiff, and 6 clear of Brighton.

Cardiff have to play Liverpool and United in two of the next four.
and Brighton have to play Spurs, City, and Arsenal.

Literally no chance that both those teams make up the gap.

The problem with the bench boost chip is that it can't be measured in just the gameweek it is deployed in. Most managers prepare for bench boost by bringing in DGW players into their team the week or weeks before. Also, they are in turn somewhat stuck with these players for the remaining GWs of the season. If managers end up with a reasonably strong/playing 15 as a result of BB, they either have wasted value sitting on the bench or benching dilemmas, tricky keeper rotation, etc. Many managers will end up using a valuable FT or hit on fire-extinguishing and/or questionable FPL assets such as Knockhart, Valery, in order to prepare for BB. CL rotation, teams on the beach and/or tired, high pressure relegation scraps all make it all the more difficult for managers to plan for. As a result, the seemingly attractive allure of a BB DGW on paper rarely turns into a reality. Worst of all, the overall team can suffer by managers disregarding good assets just because they have a SGW, or because they are unaffordable due to having a playing bench. Of course, luck plays a huge role either way.

                        My questions are:
-Is BB over-rated as a chip? Is it a poisoned chalice?
-Would managers be best just to use BB with the players they have or early in the season rather than trying to tailor their precious 2nd WC to suit it, in turn potentially doing more harm than good?
-What is considered a respectable score from a BB bench?

                          Very good points mate.
I think I'm also going to play BB in gw 1 next season (if possible with fixtures and all).
I kinda feeling pressured by the BB chip atm.

I personally would br happy if my bench scores 25+ points.
                          (Foster, Duffy, Valery, Deulofeu)

Thanks, I would be delighted with 25pts from my bench of Ryan, Digne, Valery, JWP. I'd take 15-20 if you gave it to me now.

Does it matter who's actually on your bench because every player is the same. You could move your better players there and say they scored 40+. BB means you have one larger team and I don't think many people see it that way which is why they feel itt must be played in a DGW.

But, to find it's effectiveness you need to know players you wouldn't have played if not on BB so

But if you planned for your BB, you'd have planned for all the XV to be there so I'm not sure how one works that out. I think lots of folk are ruining their run in by obsessing over a DGW BB. Hopefully I can prove my point over the final 4 gameweeks. My WC team is based purely on those games. After Feeney and Brighton, there are a lot of panic buys happening and there will be more after DGW35 and the CL.

20 points for BB is historically a par score. It is still the most powerful of all the chips

Thanks, I was thinking somewhere around 20 would be decent.

BB certainly has good potential but my point is that isn't difficult to quantify it's overall effectiveness? In that it can weaken a team elsewhere in the weeks leading up to and after by encouraging managers to get players they wouldn't have gotten otherwise, by leaving value on the bench, etc.

All chips win/lose you less than 1% of the total score you get over a whole season, so they all are definitely massively over-hyped.

Has been mentioned on here a bit that playing it early might be the best use.

If a mid table team with good cheap options has a good fixture in GWs 1-3 next season I'll BB for them.

Given that I've based my WC on it this season and it's in a DGW I want 15-20 from it (4 appearance points x 4 players, plus hopefully a clean sheet or attacking return from someone).

Next season I'll be satisfied with 10-15

But do you have single gameweek players in your XI. What if they were on your bench, how many points would you expect then? I don't get everyone obsessing about the number of points on their bench when it's all about the overall score of your XV.

Would people be happy if they have 30 points on their bench? Yes. But would they be happy if they also only had 30 points in their XI? No. So, who cares how may points are on their bench specifically?

I don't agree with that reasoning. When I say bench I mean the 4 worst players I have this week, who (barring Lloris) I know I wouldn't have if I wasn't using the bench boost. And they're all DGWers.

30 points from 4 is obviously way better than 30 from 11, but the obvious way to judge the success of a BB on its own is to look at the extra points it brings you. In the case of people who WCed in 34 obviously you need to consider the fact that you maybe siphoned some cash off from your best 11, but BB isn't exclusively to be used in tandem with a WC

Haha no worries. Jesus doesn't mind.

This highlights my point further because, in reality, people don't just plonk 4 additional players onto their team one week and call them the four worst players. I agree that BB and WC aren't an exclusive partnership but that's how many have approached them this year. The benefit of a BB is hard to judge if your team before and after that BB week is compromised to get an enhanced bench on one particular week. Folk who wanted Salah in GW36 are taking hits now following Brighton/Denney/etc so that they can still get him AND have a full XV in GW35. Looking at the scores of 4 players out of 15 is contrived and too crude for me.

Thank you for this, I thought I was the only one who had these thoughts!

It's not overrated but using it in a DGW (when you have the least confidence in starts) is what's overrated. You get 4 extra players to play whenever you want. I'm playing my wildcard this week (got 68 points in GW34 even after transferring Ake out for Duffy as a shield). If you structure the end of your season around one GW, I;m convinced you lose out on points elsewhere. I'll BB'ing in GW37 or GW38. TC Salah in GW36 probably. The point is I'm staying slightly flexible because I don't know who'll be fit, who will be in the CL semis or which teams/players are going to fall apart, i.e. Brighton, Deeney.

The score itself doesn't matter, it's how that relates to other players in the game. Looking at last year is fine but the question for BB use this year is, in which GW is the points ceiling highest and comes from a select group of players/teams which I can incorporate into one team. GW35 is probably full of points but also full of uncertainties which make me very unsure about whether I can harness those points.

Great points. I was tossing and turning with the idea of saving the WC until this week but BB35 plan got in the way and won out. I'm already down about 25pts as a result and would have had a better team going forward with the extra week of info on CL, injuries, form etc. if I had kept my WC until this week.

I've got Ogbonna and Schlupp in my team currently on the bench. Worth -8 to get 2 defenders to play alonside Maddison (Whu) and Borus (Fel) and Bench Boosting?

Current back 3 is Duffy, Bednarek, TAA.

Really considering Jota captain this week. Brave?
As it stands I don’t own Jimi but will need to replace Deeney
Have other issues like Brighton players to go first

If you were considering dropping one of Son or Eriksen this week to fund a move for the remainder of the season, which would you lose?

Probably Eriksen, Son should be involved in more goals with Kane out.

                          *should.

Son - only because Im sick of players not starting/playing 😆

Really tough. I expect eriksen to do better when he has good players around him but still got to say he goes.

Tough one. Son more likely to score goals. Eriksen is the creator and also more expensive.
If price not an issue I’d lean towards keeping Eriksen
I might be in the same boat soon

                          Eriksen for sure.
I regret picking him up on WC. Would have loved Hazard/Mane tbh

Does this sound like a good idea?

Mane & Batshuayi > Jota and Aguero?

                        Ryan Foster
                        Luiz Robbo Doherty Duffy Valery
                        Salah Pogba Son Jota Brooks
                        Vardy Jiminez Aguero

BB 35 - would be willing to take another hit to rid Duffy or Ryan.

Vardy for Firmino 36? TC Salah.

                        Morning,

really Struggling to make a decision on this weeks moves, which combo looks better for a -4. Still planning BB this week at this stage.

                        Deeney >
                        a) Ings
                        b) Gray
                        c) Rondon
                        d) Llotente.

                        +

                        1) Ryan > Lloris
                        2) Ryan > Patricio
                        3) Ryan > Gunn

or Keep Ryan and go +

                        5) Duffy > Trippier.
                        6) Duffy > Kola/Monreal

Mitrovic can be a very shrewd buy for the run in.

Stats through the roof now that Fulham is gone.

If it's stats you're after (with no returns) a Mitrovic/Higuain partnership is the way to go
