Differentials

Differentials among the top 10k FPL managers

There are only two Gameweeks remaining of the 2018/19 season, with very little time left for Fantasy Premier League managers to improve their overall rank or claw back a mini-league deficit.

This is the time of the season when “differentials” really come to the fore, with a carefully chosen, low-owned Fantasy asset carrying the potential to boost an FPL manager’s OR.

While looking at overall ownership within the game is one way of filtering out differentials, the fact that there are now millions of inactive FPL teams skews the figures somewhat.

Ownership within the top 10k is therefore a more reliable barometer and also provides a clue for those in and around the top 10,000 as to who their rivals are currently backing – or overlooking – in the season run-in.

We have used data mined from Ragabolly‘s site, livefpl.net, for this analysis.

High-Owned Players

The players with an ownership of 10% or more in the top 10,000 are as follows:

Obviously there is something of a hangover from Gameweeks 34 and 35 within those figures, with the majority of the players in the list having had at least one Double Gameweek in the past fortnight.

Fixture Difficulty

Sorting clubs by fixture difficulty on our Season Ticker for Gameweeks 37 and 38 gives the following:

Differentials

Manchester United’s double-header against Huddersfield Town and Cardiff City is perhaps the most-appealing pair of fixtures in Gameweeks 37 and 38 but there would be understandable reservations about their players on current form.

Their Gameweek 36 match against Chelsea on Sunday can act as an audition of sorts but the nature of the fixtures beyond that may be enough to convince some FPL bosses to take one last punt on a United player.

Paul Pogba (£8.5m) and Marcus Rashford (£7.3m) are already above the 10% threshold and will likely see their ownerships rise further despite their indifferent form but Romelu Lukaku (£10.6m) is in genuine differential territory, currently only owned by 0.46% of managers in the top 10k.

Security of starts is an issue with the Belgian and he was indeed benched in midweek, while he is without a goal since Gameweek 29 – although he has had seven big chances in his last six appearances.

Luke Shaw (£5.0m), owned by just 0.53% of the top 10k, is perhaps a more appealing option given that United face the lowest-scoring teams in the Premier League in Gameweeks 37 and 38.

Cardiff pretty much have to win against Crystal Palace in Gameweek 37 to stand any chance of avoiding the drop, which will force the Bluebirds out on the front foot against Roy Hodgson’s side.

The likes of Wilfried Zaha (£6.9m) and Christian Benteke (£6.3m) – owned by 3.79% and 0.08% of the top 10k respectively – could have a field day against Cardiff then, particularly as Palace have been much better away from home this season.

Bournemouth are the visitors to Selhurst Park on the final day of the season and have conceded more away goals than all bar relegated Huddersfield and Fulham in 2018/19.

Spurs, Chelsea and Arsenal enjoy two “blue” fixtures in Gameweeks 37 and 38 but much uncertainty surrounds their respective managers’ team selections in the run-in, with those three clubs in Champions League or Europa League semi-final action around their remaining Premier League games.

Eden Hazard (£10.9m) is still an eye-catching omission from our above list, however, with the Belgian sitting in just 8.19% of top 10k squads.

The likes of Cesar Azpilicueta (£6.4m), David Luiz (£5.8m) and Gonzalo Higuain (£9.0m) also all have ownerships of less than 5% within this group of elite managers.

Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang (£10.9m) would be a high-risk, high-reward punt.

The Gabonese striker is the second-highest-scoring FPL forward and sits in just 2.93% of top 10k squads but second-guessing Unai Emery’s team selections is nigh-on impossible and Aubameyang – for one reason or another – has only started in four of Arsenal’s last ten Premier League games.

Out of Europe, Manchester City’s focus is very much on the league.

Bernardo Silva (£7.7m) and David Silva (£8.5m) are cut-price routes into a City attack that has not failed to score in the last 19 Gameweeks.

Owned by 7.61% and 0.39% of the top 10k respectively, the two Silvas have posted modest returns this season but sit in the top 12 midfielders for expected goal involvement (xGI) in 2018/19.

Casting our net further, the in-form Ryan Babel (£5.5m) and Shane Long (£4.6m) are two budget options who have been racking up the returns of late and who both enjoy two “blue” fixtures in Gameweeks 37 and 38.

No midfielder under £8.5m has a better points-per-match average than Babel this season, while Long has scored four goals in his last five games.

The pair were owned by 1.86% and 3.16% of the top 10k respectively at the point of the Gameweek 36 deadline.

West Ham United have started delivering some much-improved performances recently and were excellent at Spurs on Saturday.

Not one of the Hammers’ players was owned by more than 4% of the top 10k as of this weekend, with Marko Arnautovic (£6.7m), Felipe Anderson (£6.9m) and Michail Antonio (£6.7m) all owned by less than 0.6% of these managers.

Anderson and Antonio sit in the top ten midfielders for shots in the box and efforts on target in the last four Gameweeks and face a now-safe Southampton and FA Cup finalists Watford in their last two games.

Finally, a word on Everton. While the Toffees still have a trip to Spurs to come, Marco Silva’s troops are one of the Premier League’s form teams at present and were much the better side against Palace yesterday.

Like West Ham assets, all of Everton’s players are owned by less than 4% of FPL managers.

Lucas Digne (£5.3m) is part of an Everton backline that has kept seven clean sheets in their last nine games, while Richarlison (£6.4m) and Gylfi Sigurdsson (£7.4m) have scored more goals this season (13 each) than any midfielder under £10.0m in FPL.

2FT to play with. Thoughts on losing the spurs boys? Bournemouth is not a bad fixture but they feel woefully out of form / CL matches inbetween the PL games

Eriksen and son -> hazard + any midfielder up to 7.0

Not sure if @Ragabolly is around to see this but it'd be cool if livefpl recorded where in the top 10k players actually were.

So like in bands of 1000,2000,3000 how many times say Sterling features in each band.

As Sterling may be in 50% of teams but he's actually only selected by everyone in positions 4k-10k so would be a good pick to then move up from 4k to 1k but wouldn't really help apart from keep your place if you were 8k ranked

Not everyone cares about the top 10k. He already has bands for this reason, they just cover everyone.

Yeah it's just that he clearly actually scans and records the teams of the top 10k where as he uses averages for other teams to calculate position.

So in theory he should be able to get this sort of detail for the top 10k where as I don't think he'd be able to for the rest

Pretty fine margins to regulate. I think the spread would be fairly even (eg a player owned by 70% of the top 10k is most likely owned by close to 70% of each 1 thousand bracket

      1. fusen
        • 7 Years
        22 days, 20 hours ago

Maybe, but it may be more interesting for say a 25% owned player who ends up barely being owned by anyone in 1-5000 and so is actually a much much bigger differential for gaining places

Keeping Aubameyang rather than shifting to Kun for the double GW and consequent hat-trick against Chelsea probably cost me 75 points and top 1k. Still, a reasonable season

On 3.6 too. I'm pretty happy with where I am on one hand. It's my second year playing so pretty good result. On the other hand weeks ago I was at about 1.1 k and hoped to break into the top 1k. I then went out to just over 10,000k. Now I'm pleased I will most likely break 10,000k and possibly 5,000K. 🙂

120k which around these parts is probably bit rubbish.

My aim for last two games is to jump into top 100k and win my ML - very tight battle at the top of it.

      Just under 12k post-autosubs.

      Aguero, Vardy, Laporte to play.

I have had a good season that petered off a bit after DGW25 (and a failed TC in GW31), but the Salah captaincy has helped me regain some spots to give me a chance at 10K.

      Fingers crossed...

      201K with Sterling left.

It's been such a yoyo season.. Been getting some crucial decisions wrong that have meant - 50 points in a week and it's constantly put me behind the 8 ball.

I'm not happy with the rank as it's my first serious season, but I think it's widely regarded as a tough season and logic hasn't worked out at times.

Learning from the mistakes and hoping for better next season.

First season as a member here has been a nightmare. 347K looking like my third worst season ever but was 558k before Friday's kick off so clawing back some respectability with a 100 and two to go this GW.
Felt like all my 50/50 selections were wrong even when I started doing the opposite of Az 😉

Even though I wasted TC few weeks ago I think it was week 33 that’s hurt the most - most of team did ok but didn’t have Hazard or Vardy who everyone captained. Hard to get back in top 1k now. Will be happy if I stay top 5k though. Need Aguero to blank today!

I decided to jump on the Brighton train in gw34 and did Fraser to Knockaert for a hit.

Turned out to be a 21 point swing and killed my 2k rank at the time.

Have clawed back into the top 10k again and aiming for 5k if I can. Still have tc left and it’s very tight at the top so hears hoping.

Season summed up by 5 straight reds followed by 9 steady greens. 250k to just outside 30k. Man City double with Sane and KDB cost me a boatload of points. 107 this week with Kun and Laporte to go has made it a respectable campaign

What do you think about the autosub rule in fpl? and the formation rule?
(e.g I have Wilson first on my bench & because I played 3 defenders he can't come in for a defender who does not play Whereas If I played 4 defenders then he will come in).

Likewise, I believe every manager should play whatever formation they want, even if they play 2 defenders as long as it is 11 starting players

    1. JHATM FC

      1. Hakim Ziyech
        22 days, 20 hours ago

Yikes! I hate it. Every manager should be able to give an all out attack strategy whenever they want. That is why it's their team. Also the autosub rule is just pointless to me, whoever is first on the bench should be able to come in for anyone.

Wouldn’t change anything about the required formation

      1. Hakim Ziyech
        22 days, 20 hours ago

I would. I have had times this season I wish I could play a 2-5-3 to get the best out of my team because of that rule I can't but then it is my team & I feel we should be able to throw out whatever formation we want to keep things more interesting

    3. TyroneGAA
      • 1 Year

I like the rule too .. your just gutted Wilson is on your bench hahahaha

      1. Hakim Ziyech
        22 days, 20 hours ago

Not really, I knew he will troll but I did not know he will troll so hard hahaha. To be honest, we should be able to pick whatever formation we want & just like in real football, a manager can remove a defender for a striker in a 3-4-3 formation if they want with regards to the autosub rule

    4. Andy'81
      • 1 Year
      22 days, 20 hours ago

I'm not really a big fan of autosubs, I'd like to see teams locked completely so points don't come in off your bench, however that would probably create more complaints than solve issues for those at FPL towers so I can understand it not being implemented.

The two defenders rule just isn't going to happen.

It's hardly ridiculous, we should be rewarded/punished by the decisions we make as managers (hence why the (c) is so important every week), being rewarded for failing to set the right line up is a bit meh imo, and the 4-5 players example is bit extreme, I think I've had bench points come in three times this season.

          1. Hakim Ziyech
            22 days, 20 hours ago

    Have Babel & Hazard.

Amazed that Hazard has an EO of 8.14% going into a tragic Man Utd, Watford at home (he got 15 points against them in the reverse fixture) and then a leaky Leicester.

Guaita at 1.42% EO is a steal too - Cardiff and Bournemouth to go
