Man City options to headline Gameweek 37 captaincy

Manchester City and Chelsea are likely to be the teams at the forefront of the Gameweek 37 captaincy debate.

Both teams have appealing home fixtures this weekend, with Leicester City coming to the Etihad Stadium and Watford visiting Stamford Bridge.

Sergio Aguero (£11.9m) has more goals at home than any other forward this season, while the Foxes have not kept a clean sheet on the road since Gameweek 21 – before Brendan Rodgers took charge from Claude Puel.

The fact that the Argentinian found the net for the first time since Gameweek 32 on Sunday afternoon, he will certainly be in the minds of our voters.

The latest captain poll is now open and users can cast their choices either embedded in the article below or in the sidebar of our website.

Raheem Sterling (£11.6m) is likely to be another go-to option, despite registering just an assist in his last three Premier League outings.

He still has a 66.9% ownership among the top 10,000 managers, just 6% shy of Aguero.

A potential differential for Gameweek 37 could be Eden Hazard (£10.9m), and it will be interesting to see how much traction his cause becomes in the next few days.

The meeting with Watford on Sunday afternoon could conceivably be the Belgian’s last in a Chelsea shirt at Stamford Bridge, which might bring the best out of him.

However, Hazard has home form to back that sentiment up, with 47 points in his last four in front of his own fans.

That averages out at 11.75 points per game in that time, while Watford are without a clean sheet on the road since Gameweek 25.

Despite scoring five times on Huddersfield at Anfield on Friday, it is possible that a trip to Newcastle might put some managers off Liverpool options for Gameweek 37.

However, the Magpies have just one clean sheet at home since Gameweek 28, and with Premier League safety now secured the stakes are not quite as high for Rafa Benitez’s side.

Sadio Mané‘s (£10.1m) goal threat has largely been limited to Anfield matches this season, but Mohamed Salah (£13.3m) has more away goals than any other midfielder this season.

Manchester United’s visit to Huddersfield could present an opportunity for some differential captains.

The Terriers have now conceded 15 goals in their last four matches, at an average of 3.75 per game.

They are the perfect opponents for the Red Devils to face as they hope to book a finishing place in the division’s top four and claim Champions League football.

Paul Pogba (£8.5m) and Romelu Lukaku (£10.7m) will probably the ones that are looked at, although Marcus Rashford (£7.3m) is sure to be considered if he is passed fit.

Meanwhile, the form player in the league is Jamie Vardy (£9.0m) with the same number of goals in eight matches under Brendan Rodgers than in the 28 before that.

Such incredible form could see him act as a differential captain once again, even if Leicester travel to face Manchester City in Gameweek 37.

Raúl Jiménez (£6.9m) might also be looked at with Fulham coming to Molineux although the Cottagers have now recorded three clean sheets in a row.

ML rival 47 pts behind. He has Hazard, Sterling, Wilson, Rondon as main differentials vs. Son. B.Silva, Aguero, Jimenez. Cant really fit in Hazard without a hit. I also have TC chip still in pocket. Should I just try to do Mane -> Hazard and Murray - > Rondon for -4 (exact funds atm) Or should I try to do something else?

    My team below

    Ryan
    TAA - Laporte - Jonny
    Son - Mane - Salah - Redmond - B.Silva
    Aguero - Jimenez
    Foster - Murray - Duffy - Valery

    TIA

If your mini league is your only/main priority then I would be ruthless and try and have as many as the same players as possible tbh

I have been doing this the last few weeks and it has worked a charm. They have very very little chance of catching me

Looking to make up ground on my mini league leader, we both have:

    Aguero, Sterling, Mane, Jiminez, Robbo

    He has Son, Jota, Vardy

    I have Salah, Deulo, Wilson

Who would you be looking to bring in to make up ground?

2FT so Foster -> Speroni to waste 1FT and free up some GW38 funds.

    Going in with this:

    Lloris
    Robbo, Laporte, Valery
    Salah, Sterling, Son, Jota, JWP
    Kun, Jimenez

    Speroni, Llorente, Dunk, Yoshi

I'm not sure what to expect from Brighton this weekend, many have suggested another Spurs like performance, and will be playing one of their Brighton defensive assets, but honestly a point doesn't really do them any good at this stage (due to goal difference).

They surely won't be expecting anything from the City game, and Arsenal have conceded nine goals in their last three games, and have EL on Thursday.

I think it's more likely we see Brighton going for the win, rather than playing ultra defence.

Well I own Auba so I hope so, but it'll be interesting to see how they approach it, a draw for Brighton, and a Cardiff win at home to Palace takes it to the last day, and as I say, surely Brighton can't get anything from a City team who'll need a win.
...not that I'd expect Cardiff to beat Utd at Old Trafford, but there's never been a better time to play them.

Cardiff would have already played by then. If Cardiff lose (or even draw due to GD) then Brighton are safe.

Therefore I'd expect lesser resistance than Spurs game (especially if like me you think Cardiff wont beat CP)

      1. HamezMace
        • 9 Years

Well I certainly don't see Cardiff winning both of their last two games, but if they were going to win one of them, it's probably Palace at home.

From an FPL perspective I'm hoping Brighton don't need anything from the City game, so I can feel much happier about TC Aguero.

How did you do since chip season started? Would be interesting to see how many points people got over the period and what strategy they used BGW31 - GW36. For me:

    - Strategy - FH32, WC33, BB35, TC36
    - Total points (ex. hits) in the 6 GWs - 500

Nothing special from any of the chips this season. Triple captain Salah in blank gameweek 31 for an extra 2 points. Free hit got me about 86 when everyone else was over a hundred. 19 from my bench boost in gameweek 35 which was okay but not the best. Chips overrated imo.

It can mean a rank rise. But if you have a decent enough rank before the chips usage the rank jump might not be much.
As those around you are using the similar tactics and getting similar players.
It would look spectacular if you were ranked in the 330k's before the chips but not that much movement if you were 20k ish before chips.

Same strategy. There was some pretty bad luck in that stretch too so happy with how I played that period of the season.

Chips this year have been far more successful than last year for me. Last season, TC = 3(x3) BB = 10 points. This year the TC was worth 13(x3) and BB = 24 points.

(I wasted my TC way back in gw29 but still managed 103 gw36 by some miracle)

It is very hard to judge as I had a disaster of a wildcard gw34 (scored 32) taking out VVD, Robertson, Sterling Pogba.

      -total points excluding hits for 32 - 36 = 429

      Strategy: TC25, FH32, WC34, BB35

      Points:
      TC 89pts (3 from TC...)
      FH 76pts
      WC 73pts
      BB 88pts

Compared to others it seems rather bad I have to say. No score over 100 (yet ;)). KDB (c) getting injured in DGW35 didn't help the BB score.

      FH32, WC34, BB35, TC36.

Total points 31-36: 399. Poor in comparison.

If I had done literally nothing, hit by a bus after setting my GW31 team, I would have scored 325 without a captain - so if I had permacaptained Salah it would have come to 371.

All my chips, all my planning and sweating about it, gained me...28 points.

Why do I play this game?!

I mean, it breaks down like this:

TC: 39 (Mané, GW36), scores 89 overall that week.
BB: 96 overall, but only with 17 on bench who I wouldn’t have played.
FH32: 90 overall, when my original team would have been very poor, so can’t complain.

      FH in GW32 - 92 points.
      WC in GW34 - 43 points.
      BB in GW35 - 34 extra points.
      TC in GW25 - 19 extra points.

Before GW32 i was ranked at 9k, now 7,8k. Scored 399 points during this period.

BGW31; Freehit as had only 5 starters. Scored 36 with same player I would have captained without Freehitting (Salah). Made 18 points on non-Freehit team.

      DGW32; 90 no chips. 9 starters, transferred Salah>Sterling for 10.

BGW33; 92 no chips, 6k GW rank!. Took a -8 (Sterling, Pogba, Rashford > Salah, Tielemans, Vardy(c)). 47 points less hit = 39 up. Still only got 9 out as Boruc was dropped.

GW34; Wildcard, awful week 39 points, 5m GW rank!

DGW35; 103 points, Bench Boost activated, 17 extra points (Foster Hojberg Valery Bennett).

      GW36; 99 points, no chips. Sold KdB>Mane.

Played TC back in GW12, Salah(Tc) v Fulham. 24 points.

GW31-GW36 total 459(-8) but without TC in this period.

The top two in the world, as well as the leaders of The Last Ten (started GW29), January to May League (started GW21), FFS Mods & Cons, and Top 10k Any Season, all played FH32, WC34, BB35 and TC either 25 or 36, so with two game-weeks to go that does appear to have been the most effective strategy so far this season.

The world number three still has his Triple Captain to play (perhaps he is saving it for GW38, like last year's champion?), but he is 68 points behind world number one Adam Levy.

Rotation's Alter Ego, leader of The Last Ten, has 512 (-8) points in the 6 GWs compared to your 500 (-8), and he also has 650 (-8) in the 8 GWs starting GW29 compared to your 620 (-8).

Gavin Tarrant, leader of The home stretch and second in The Last Ten, has 503 (-12) in the 6 GWs and 642 (-16) in the 8 GWs.

453 points in those 6 weeks having wasted most chips.

      - Wildcarded impatiently back in GW22.
      - TC'd Salah for 2 points in 31
      - FH 32 got 85 points (my non-FH squad only marginally behind)
      - BB got me 15, but I wasted a hit on Barnes > Redmond and Harvey went on to score off the bench

Despite having wasted all the chips, and not having had my WC to play with, I've climbed from 11K to 5.8K in this time, because chips aside it's been a good run. In particular, factoring the 31 blank into my early WC (Trent, Barnes, Richarlison) and getting on Vardy early for a similar reason have paid off. And captaincy has been solid.

      Terribly.

Seven extra points from triple captain and bench boost. Combined.

I'm sure other managers who planned no better than me but had more luck could have ended up 50 points better off. These chips are too much of a lottery IMO!

They have but only FH (and second WC) in that time has really helped me. I could have not played BB and still got a green arrow that week.

Essentially, WC-type chips are genuinely useful every season, IMO. BB will result in useful points but could vary wildly between players of similar skill. They can even swing wildly between individual players' individual gameweeks. I the week after I played my BB for 6 I had 29 points on my bench - probably the highest of the season.

TC is a monstrously unfair and gimmicky chip though. However you prepare and whoever you go for, you could end up with a player playing 59 mins with no returns, or getting injured in the first minute, or even getting a red card or missing a penalty. There is nothing in FPL that can result in such arbitrary point swings as the TC chip - you could play it and get 20x3 from it, go back in time and play it again on the game player in the same match and get -1x3.

Those are the breaks, and they even out across several seasons, but they can severely hinder an FPL manager's ambitions for a given season!

This is only my third season playing but by far the hardest and the strangest one. First two seasons I finished around 30k. This season however in GW31 I was at 609k, after playing chips I am 226k. Still bad but mini goal now is to finish inside 200k. At least its been fun playing those chips and it gaved me some comfort at the end of hard season.

      Strategy:
      FH32 (81pts)
      WC34 (40pts)
      BB35 (113pts, bench 44pts)
      TC36 (117pts, Salah TC)
      Total points - 449 (-8)

      WC32 (72pts)
      BB35 (91pts)

352pts over that time, went into GW31 at 350k and now at 511k 🙁

No idea how I even started that low considering a fairly succesful TC Kane in GW21 (his 36pts helping me to 74pts) and a reasonable FH25 (76pts), both after arguably my best start to a season. Don't get this season.

Guiata. Only because he has a decent chance in both games, Gunn has a VERY good chance in the last game but ht eworst chance in the first game. WHU last home game of the season after a 0-1 at spurs looks likely a goal will be conceded.

    What to do with Firmino?
Might swap out for Lukaku, if Lukaku is a definite starter for the last two GWs.

If you need a punt on a striker, than yeah swap him out for Lukaku, with Rashford injured and Martial getting in trouble during the Chelsea match without even playing, I would say Lukaku is sure to start.

Play Vardy (Man C away) or Ward-Prowse (W Ham away)?

Bigger chance of Vardy getting attacking returns.

Eriksen to Jota or Pogba IMO, if the two managers infront of you don't have them.

Jota and Pogba is a good buy IMO. What to do with Firmino? Ship him out for Kaku? I can then Eriksen to Siggi or Jota

I have no clue what you are on about and I kind of think that might be a good thing?
Not a GOT fan at all gave it seven episodes characters wooden, dialogue strained stories boring.
I don't know how anyone can get invested in the characters they are all just set cliches!
I would have loved it when I was 14/15 yo for the nude scenes.

I see the Night King is out with a career ending injury - have no idea how Arya didn't get red carded for that sickening challenge! 😉

      Rafa will build a wall.
Have you seen the way Newcastle play against the top sides?

Haven't they conceeded against every top since team home and away this season? Some wall, don't know why people think Newcastle are so good at defending.

Because they are not a team who is going to get hammered.
The opposing team have to really fight to break them down.
Off the top six only Liverpool has given them a hammering and that was way back in gw19.
The rest have had to fight for thier wins.

That wall has a few leaks in it alright.
But in fairness Newcastle have the lowest over/under number score for the season of 2.25
