4 things I would change about FPL for next season

Much of FPL is working, but there are four things I would change for next season.

1. Partial Clean Sheet Bonus

Justice for George Friend! There’s nothing more frustrating than losing clean sheet points because your player played just less than 60 minutes. I call it the “Christensen syndrome”. It’s an absolute sickener. One way to soften the blow is to introduce a partial clean sheet bonus like Telegraph Fantasy Football offer. The new rule would be very simple:

  • 4 points = not conceding a goal whilst on the pitch and playing at least 60 minutes.
  • 2 points = not conceding a goal whilst on the pitch and playing at least 30 minutes.

2. An Extra Point For Consecutive Goals In A Match.

How does this work? If Aguero scores a hat-trick in a game, he gets 4 points for his first goal; 5 points for his second goal; and 6 points for his third goal. This rewards players who have an exceptional performance in a single game. After all, it is much harder to score 3 goals in 90 minutes than it is to score just a single goal.

3. Reduce The Minus BPS For Shots Off Target

Is attacking intent and forward-thinking play really something that you should be penalised for? Salah is famous for this – lots of goal attempts, many off target, hence the lack of bonus. Exciting players who go for goal shouldn’t get less BPS than unadventurous, sideways pass merchants who are dull to watch. I would tweak the bonus points system and remove the -1 BPS for an off target attempt. Or maybe introduce a +1 BPS for every shot on target. If you get penalised for a shot OFF target, then why not balance things out and reward players for a shot ON target?

4. Cool New Chips

I love the chips and would happily see more of them added to the game. During double gameweek season, they get the blood pumping and the heart racing and make for some exhilarating gameweeks. Norwegian FPL has some great chips, such as “Two Captains”, were both your captain and vice-captain score double points.

The one I really like is the old “Park The Bus” chip. This provides double clean sheet points for your starting defenders in a single gameweek. I would also add your starting goalkeeper to this. This would require a lot of planning (which is always worth encouraging in the game), as you look for a gameweek with a number of teams with a favourable home fixture and a likely clean sheet. You then you plan your premium and budget defender transfers around this to take full advantage with a 5-at-the-back formation.

    Thanks for writing this!

    I'm split on your suggestions.

    1. I don't feel too strongly about this one - it could work. It's sometimes exciting losing a CS (or seeing your rival lose one) but I don't mind either way.

    2. I think I disagree with this one. Players who score multiple goals are already, usually, rewarded by the bonus system so adding extra points on might just give the same players even more points. The game already skews towards goal scorers in the way the points are given out as well as bonus, this seems like it might be too much.

    3. I agree, almost completely! The game should reward attacking intent.

    4. I agree that new chips would be good, but not Park The Bus - it was far too powerful in Eliteserien last season. I like Two Captains, and Rich Uncle (FH with unlimited budget) has been good this season in Eliteserien. Both Allsvenskan and Eliteserien have used Attack Attack, which is all your forwards are captained for a GW - I like this one too.

        Hi,

I've always thought there should be a bonus for scoring the winning goal.

Nice feedback, thanks Geoff. And thank you for taking the time to publish this.

Don't forget ... People love points. Providing more legitimate routes to scoring points will only heighten our enjoyment of the game.

Anyone else surprised with the pricing on fpl. Robbo and TAA should be closer to 10m next season rather than the mooted 7m with their points totals, a bit like Kdb priced at 10m when scoring 200 points per season. Positive discrimination in favour of defenders.

          Lol
We'll need 130m budget then if all big hitters price increase such drastically.

No-one knows what the new FPL prices will be till FPL reveal them.
          Till then, it's just guesswork.
FPL usually set them so that we can afford a reasonable team, but not all the players we would like to include or all the players we had last season.
They also tend to tweak the prices and the algorithms for price changes, in such a way that the most efficient allocation of funds for the new season may not be the same as for the previous one. "Every season is different".

Totally agreed... Defenders need to get that many more points to have similar pricing to midfielders/attackers

TAA would be on par with Hazard/Sterling if he had played the whole season, so why is he not priced accordingly? That's all it means is you would need to get TAA instead of Sterling and a Camarasa of the FPL world to accomodate the pricing.

The worry for most players on here is that it would break the FPL template and make team structure harder to predict and that much harder to set a team up at the start of the season. Robbo & Camarasa = 319 Sterling & AWB = 354. Not much difference there to be honest so don't understand why Sterling price should be inflated that much higher than TAA/Robbo?

        1 Is OK - I would do 1pt for 20 mins, 2pts for 40, 3 points for 60 and 4 for 80 though to lessen the jumps.

        2 is a terrible idea

        3 agree with totally

I think defenders should get 1 cleansheet point per 30 minutes played so a max total of 3 in a game. Liv and City defenders got big hauls without having to do much defending.

              1. Frustrating but a team either gets a clean sheet or not. Seems silly to adjust this to a partial, and would raise prices on all defs if implemented
              2. Bonus points already cover this

1 I have no opinion about
              2 I hate
              3 I agree completely
4 Maybe there could be an "armoury" of say 7 types of chip, then you get to use 3 of them in the season, but you get to choose which ones and when. Sort of like choosing a "class" in Call of Duty. Ie a manager who favour a big at the back strategy could use the "park the bus" chip, "safe hands" chip (one i've just made up on the spot where both your goalkeepers score double in a gameweek), and the TC, and a manager who likes a heavy premium forward frontline could use the "Forward rush" chip (all 3 forwards score double points in a gameweek), AOA, and the FH or something. Would create a range of chip strategies according to manager style.

Park the bus I think would be overpowered. Laundry Day where cs counted double might be more reasonable.

I like the idea of 4. but each chip would need a similar weighting of potential scoring, ie forward rush would have the score of 3 players doubled, where as 'safe hands' would only double the score of 2 goalkeepers, as per your description. I guess you would have to treble the points of the goalkeepers (2 goalkeepers x 3x points = 6) to be almost equivalent of double points of attackers (3 forwards x 2x points = 6)....although, I suspect that most players will have 3 attackers that would outscore their 2 goalkeepers, especially if using budget goalkeepers to rotate.

                        1) I agree with partial CS points - it works well in TFF
                        2) No
                        3) Yes
                        4) Would like to see all chips gone except for two WCs (one in first half of season, one in second half)

Additionally, I think defensive BPS need to be changed. Brighton put up a defensive masterclass against Spurs and Arsenal, but because they conceded one goal they were massively shafted on the BPS. It was heroic defending, but defensive blocks, last minute interceptions, blocks off the line etc are not rewarded enough IMO.

I got done in my mini-league as a result of the chips. i totally lucked out with TC getting just 9points from Sane at home to Huddersfield when he was on a hot streak, yet rival got 57points for TC Salah against Huddersfield, even though Salah had been going through a quiet spell.

The BPS does need some tweaking as it definitely favours attackers.

If point scoring was better balanced, there would probably be less of a template with regards teams.

Can we change it so that Goalkeepers score 10 points per goal scored? I believe it is currently 6 points like defenders but defenders scored dozens of goal this season.

For goalkeepers it is so rare that when one does score it is usually an amazing event and the FPL score should reflect that.

Considering how rare a GK goal would be, the increase to 7 isn't worth bothering with. You're telling me if Alonso scores and if Alisson scores, Alisson only deserves an extra point?

Considering how rare an event it is, I'd say it it should be rewarded significantly. (Unless a GK starts taking pens!)

I don't see any reason why rarity should be rewarded. It just makes the game more random.

Forwards get 4 points for a goal, midfielders get 5, defenders get 6, so 7 for goalkeepers seems reasonable.
                                  Anything more would be excessive.
In fact, I would be quite happy for them all to get the same.

Goalkeepers already have the advantage of getting points for saves and penalty saves.

And like all other positions, they get 6 points for doing their basic job well (forwards: appearance 2 + goal 4, midfielders: appearance 2 + assist 3 + clean sheet 1, defenders & goalkeepers: appearance 2 + clean sheet 4).

You are correct about the basic points being same but a forward is more likely to score 2 or 3 goals compared to a defender or goalkeeper and goalkeepers and defenders cannot keep two or three clean sheets in a game. That is why there needs to be a better balance between points for goals scored. Goalkeepers could have 5 points for an assist and 10 points for a goal.

Lossl and Ederson were the only two goalkeepers that had assists last season and no goalkeepers scored a goal.

Even with regards penalty saves, only 11 goalkeepers managed this last season, 3 of which saved 2 or 3 penalties. Even looking at saves made, Fabianski made 148 saves but conceded 55 goals and kept just 7 clean sheets. That is an average of 3.89 saves per game (worth one point) and conceded an average of 1.77 goals/game, in which he did not keep a clean sheet, which means that, on average points from saves largely cancelled out by goals conceded. I appreciate that gameweeks do not result in the average being scored but it is simplest way to compare.

It is less likely that a forward or midfielder will score less than 2 points compared with defenders and goalkeepers.

All of these factors suggest a re-weighting of points for goalkeepers (and possibly defenders) could be considered.

The rarity of events such as goals scored by goalkeepers is no justification for awarding high numbers of points when they do occur. That would just make the game more random and upset the balance between skill and chance.

Goalkeepers are cheaper than forwards for a reason. It is not necessary for all positions to have similarly high thresholds, especially if those thresholds are only likely to be reached on very rare occasions.

FPL have improved the weighting of positions over the years and have probably now got it about right. Any further improvements should be about rewarding normal play fairly, not about awarding large numbers of points to events that only happen once in a blue moon.

Cost comparing between positions is irrelevant when it comes to goalkeepers. You have to play one goalkeeper no matter. Other positions are flexible, ie you can play 3-5 defenders, 2-5 midfielders and 1-3 forwards. As such, goalkeepers only need to be comparable with the other goalkeepers.

So nobody expects a goalkeeper to score a goal. That does not mean that it should not be rewarded.

You cannot really tell if your goalkeeper is going to save a penalty in a game, but they will still score 5 points for it. Last season, Etheridge and Pickford both saved 3 penalties, scoring them an extra 15 points each over the season but 9 goalkeepers did not save any penalties. Just because something does not happen often, or is not predictable, does not mean that they cannot score points for it (or score more points).

If goalkeeper assists were 5 points, then Ederson's score would have increased from 169 to 171 points over the season and Lossl would have increased from 99 to 101 points. This would mean no change to their overall position in total points scored. You could then even make an argument that the assist points from goalkeepers should be greater than 5 points (and goals scored greater than 10).

I agree that goalkeepers should be compared with other goalkeepers rather than with outfielders, except that selecting a goalkeeper from a particular club rules out the possibility of selecting 3 outfielders from that club.

But I still see no good reason for increasing the rewards for goalkeeper goals and assists (although I wouldn't object to awarding the goalkeeper 7 points for a goal), so we must agree to differ on that one.

Hey RL, I appreciate your comments and can see your arguments have logic behind them. This is a debate about skill & chance and a significant change in scoring for an action may upset this.

That being said, and I think you agreed with this in a previous comment, I do think goalkeepers should be rewarded more then defenders for a goal scored. The point you made is how much of an advantage should there be & there is healthy debate to be had there.

I picked 10 for my initial comment purely because it is a round number & when a goalkeeper scored it would have a significant impact. It also guarantees the goalkeeper should get a double digit score which I think is justified. And it sounds more impressive then 7, 8, 9 or 11 points.

While I understand the skill vs chance aspect, I already think a goalkeeper scoring is a complete chance to begin with. None of us pick keepers on whether they are likely to score, nor do we expect them too. The last time a goalkeeper scored was in 2013 so I don't think players that do own the keeper will get a significant advantage (extra 1-4 points over a season we are talking about here) but in the context of the gameweek it will be a big talking point & rightly so.

I think you can allocate additional points based on the rarity of the event, in this situation I think it can be justified.

That being said I would be happy for the score to be moved above 6 as it currently is, just to differentiate it from a goal a defender scores. This is something for FPL to figure out.

What about players positions? Surly Salah, Sterling, Hazard, Sterling, Sane, Mane etc should be classed as forwards, like the World Cup fantasy.
Do you think there will be much change?

                          1. Maybe 2 points for playing the first 60 minutes without conceding, plus an additional 2 points for playing the entire match without conceding.
                          2. No, terrible idea.
                          3. Even if BPS are still deducted for misses (could perhaps be reduced to -1 for every 2 misses instead of -1 for every single miss), hitting the post should not count as a miss. And being tackled when attempting a dribble is also punished too severely.
                          4. The number of chips should not be increased, but perhaps one or more could be changed (e.g. Two Captains instead of Triple Captain). And perhaps we could be allowed to play a wildcard and another chip in the same game-week.

Honestly, #3 really needs to change. We all learned (sometimes the hard way) that Salah is BPS Kryptonite, but it really shouldn’t be that way.

Totally agree with with the third point, I think shots on target should be rewarded and to counter it perhaps reduce of the some of the BPS for a goal, this in turn should reduce the occasions when someone comes on for 10 minutes, has one shot, scores and then walks away with bonus. For example Stanislas vs Palace this season - 6 minutes, scores and gets all 3 bonus.

Would love to see him back in Premier League! More options are needed in the 'heavy-hitters' section of the game now that Hazard is heading to Madrid 😛

Not sure about his fitness level though, in terms of being a 'Cantona figure' for Man Utd...

one change i'd like to see is the multiple captain choice in a GW. Giving the ability to change your captain once the deadline has happened, only if the fixture takes place on a different day. E.g. select a captain for a sat fixture then you have the option to select a captain with a Sunday fixture should you wish or stay with your sat captain choice. Then have a third stab with a Monday captain choice. I prob haven't explained it well but I believe it was part on the WC Fantasy Official Game.

I like it because it will require additional planning and strategy in giving you captain options over multiple days and fixtures to increase your chance of a captain haul and reducing the casuals impact on OR. In the same change this would remove VC.

The BPS is still a joke, I'd like to see it removed until its sorted out

i'm not overly, just feel it will add an extra layer of forward planning and strategy which the community on here could benefit from and give them an edge

                              Found it..!!!

                              Manager substitutions within a round.
After all matches on a single day have finished and before the next Round of matches start, you can:

Replace any player (unless they were sent off) with one from your bench whose team is yet to play.
Change your captain (if he was not sent off) with a player from your squad whose team is yet to play.
Players who are substituted out will score 0 points. The captain bonus will be lost from your original captain if a new captain is selected.
An unlimited number of manager substitutions can be made.
If a manager substitution or captain change is made, then no automatic substitutions will take place in your team for that Round.

If no manager substitutions or captain changes are made, automatic substitutions will take place at the end of the Round, after all fixtures for that Round have been completed.

It will require 15 playing players each week.

agree with your first point on making getting the captaincy right but disagree it will make the game easier. Planning a team that will give you a decent captain shout per day of each round of fixtures over a period of game weeks will take a lot of planning. Getting that right will make the game harder to master

It's also part of the Champions League fantasy game. I don't like it though. Captain's choices should only be made once, no matter what games are played on which day. This change would add another level of complexity to the game that would make lots of people have less fun playing it. Most people don't have the time to log in every day of the week or weekend to change their team.

That system is fine for a short tournament such as the World Cup, but most FPL players probably can't commit to being hands-on every day for an entire Premier League season.
Perhaps you should try the Sky game if you want to change your captains.

This change would make a lot of people stop playing. People dont want to obsess over FPL every day during the weekend. I like my MLs full of casuals thank you very much. If you lose to them then seriously, learn2play.

Reckon the game should be kept as simple as possible so not to alienate new players. All the planning, strategy etc. is great (and helped me to a best ever 3000 place finish this year!) but it can also be a barrier to the more casual player and put them off. Especially if the rules and/or scoring get more complex.

Two sets of chips and one set must be used before January like the Wildcard. Everyone saving their chips for the DGWs is a bit boring. Would be fun to be forced to use chips earlier in the season.

I'd perhaps go a step further and block the use of chips in DGW's - would involve much more skill in deciding which week to use the chip.

Minus baps for a yellow card is stupid. The player could be the man of the match and wouldn't suddenly not be because he got booked. It doesn't harm the team in any way, plus he already gets docked a point anyway.

Similarily, the + bps for penalty saves are off the charts. They already get points from the penalty save, no need to guarantee the goalie 3 bps as well.

                              1) No

2)Hmm, it seems I'm the only one who actually like point nr 2, I see nothing wrong in promoting explosive players. Don't understand bonus argument you guys give, players scoring one goal can olso get bonus.

3)Number 3 looks a little bit like a change only for Salah, which is not reasonable in my opinion. Most of other heavy hitters, attacking players don't seem to have this problem, Kane, Aguero, Sterling, Hazard etc, if they score they're in BPS 8/10 times. I see Salah as sort of BPS "freak", exception not rule.
However, changing off target shots to -1 for every 2 of them might work.

                              4) Creating more chips but with limited use is a brilliant idea, so we have to choose which one to play during the season, I'm all in 🙂

One thing I would change which was not mentioned by Virgin is an assist for penalty, it should be as in World Cup Fantasy last year, 2 points for winning penalty no matter if it was converted or not.

Yes, this gets suggested often and is my preference instead of the current 'assist' method.

Change bonus to a man in the stand, or adopt the man of the match for bonus - at least the best player on the pitch should get the bonus.

                                Too subjective.
The current system may not be perfect, but the old man in the stand one was far worse.
It used to result in players such as Richard Dunn and Charlie Adam getting bonuses every week just because the man in the stand happened to be a fan of the way they played.

Yeah man in the stand was terrible. Fabregas could come away from a 2-0 defeat with all 3 bonus.

Exactly. That Birmingham milf that cost 4.5m scored 3 BPS week in week out even though he was a defensive milf.

Was easily the most fun bonus allocation method, if only because it was impossible to know who had the bonus until the announcement was made - now it can be tracked live it takes away some of the magic.

RedLightning is right though, if you ever look at the OfficialFPL Twitter feed and check out the bonus announcements there are already claims of corruption even when the system is completely transparent. If Barry Ferguson was getting 3 bonus every week these days there'd be actual riots!

I mean the Sky game uses the official Sky MOTM to allocate extra points and that causes a stink sometimes even though there are only a fraction as many people active on Twitter who talk about the game. The one where Batshuayi came on as sub for the last 8 minutes, didn't score and got MOTM was hilarious!

                                  ...ugh....."park the bus"chip....?

                                  lol

Most of the changes, eg the (c) based on form/value was taken away because it just didn't work. At the moment everything works. People just don't like it or refuse accept the chips.

                                  Big Difference.

Not sure shots off target are the main problem for Salah's bonus chances, isn't it much more about how often he's dispossessed? That's the real punisher.

I do think it's easily the best bonus system the game has employed to date (although the man in the stand method was way more fun the FPL social media manager would require a 24 hour security team if that was reintroduced!)

Regardless, I agree generally that punishing shots off target but not rewarding shots on target is a little perverse.

In my view the existing BPS system works more often than not (and on the occasions it 'doesn't work' it's still perfectly transparent unless you're too stubborn/ignorant to actually try to understand the mechanics). In my ideal system though there'd be a drastic overhaul - I'd remove all BPS for the major things that are rewarded anyway: Goals, Assists, Clean Sheets... and focus entirely upon the underlying stats. The masses would hate it and there'd be even more "My captain scored the only goal and didn't get 3 bonus?! WTAF!!!!111!!1 😡 " but it would better reflect who actually played well during the entire match rather than just who happened to be on the pitch when a penalty was awarded. Would need some very skilled rebalancing of the weighting of BPS for the remaining actions though so I don't see it happening.

Interestingly, an awful lot of the scoring suggestions I see crop up in threads like this (changes to the way bonus is awarded, captaincy switches...) were features in UFPL. A big shame that was pay to play and unavailable in a lot of countries as I think it had the makings of a really good game.

                              1. Agreed, lowers variance for surprise benchings and early subs
                              2. Disagree, someone who scores 3 goals already gets a massive amount of points and this would just increase variance
                              3. Disagree. What sideways passer has won the baps in recent memory? Chance creators get + baps and the people who waste chances get - bps. Seems good to me. A selfish player who always shoots will end up with points from goals a lot of the time, they dont need to get rewarded with bonus points too.
                              4. Agree as long as new chips reward planning. Remove TC and reintroduce park the bus which requires more planning is something I could get behind. I also didnt mind the all out attack chip. Low impact but possible to get a decent score with some good planning, or just use it when your defenders are injured/suspended.

I agree with the 3rd point you make as it is frustrating to see attacking play being penalised by the bonus system. Don't agree with the other points though.

For the first one, players already get a partial clean sheet for playing 60 minutes and 30 minutes is hardly enough time to qualify for a clean sheet.

The second point seems a bit pointless. Players who brace or get a hat trick are often very likely to get bonus points anyway and why should one goal be worth more than any other in fantasy terms?

4th point is debatable but it feels like the chips already dominate a large part of the season. Personally I prefer normal gameweeks as doubles and chips often fail to live up the hype imo.

Will be interesting to see what changes are introduced to the game next season. Last big revamp was the free hit chip and that has been a good addition to be fair.

I don't really have any problems, aside the uselessness of the (vc). I'd like to see it incorporated more into the game somehow

The vice-captain serves its purpose in providing a safety net in case your captain unexpectedly doesn't play.

Perhaps if your captain and vice-captain both unexpectedly don't play then your most expensive player could be promoted to captain in their place (especially if the reason for neither of them playing was that both their matches had been postponed at short notice due to severe weather conditions).

Totally disagree with any additional chips that would add further to the element of luck
