Interview

How FPL winner Adam Levy used Fantasy Football Scout to help him triumph

Fantasy Football Scout member Adam Levy was the runaway winner of Fantasy Premier League in 2018/19.

Adam follows in the footsteps of Simon March and Tom Fenley in finishing as the world number one in FPL while being a paid-up subscriber of our site, while member Paul Gee was the overall runner-up last season.

New Zealander Adam, who has been a member of Fantasy Football Scout for three years, says that creating his own customised stats tables and using the Season Ticker were helpful in his route to success.

“I regularly use the full capabilities of the fixture ticker,” Adam said.

“I have my own stats table I like to check back on now and then, and it’s always good to be able to read any article on the site.

“I’m probably closer to an ‘eye test’ manager but I have a stats table on FFS and I like keeping an eye on team xG/xGA, rather than single player xG.

“I always sign up pre-season for £12.50 as I think that’s good value for the members’ content.”

On a High

Gameweek 36 was a worry for Adam as Triple Captain chips were deployed

Many an FPL title race has gone down to the wire but there was little danger of anyone catching Adam going into Gameweek 38.

The new champion – who won both of our FPL leagues – romped away in the overall standings, finishing 57 points clear of runner-up James Sutton having been at the top of the pile since Gameweek 29.

Adam said it was only with two Gameweeks to go did he start to feel like victory was a real possibility.

“I think it was only after I got safely through Gameweek 36, when I knew there would be a lot of Triple Captain chips played on Liverpool players – I’d played mine earlier – that I thought: ‘OK, this could actually happen’.

“It still feels literally unbelievable. So many people play the game, it’s so statistically unlikely that you’ll win. I can see ‘Overall Rank: 1’ under my name but a part of me still thinks there must have been a mistake.”

Pre-Season Planning

David Silva was a favourite of Adam’s in the early weeks of 2018/19

A solid start always helps in FPL and Adam found himself in the top 5,000 by Gameweek 5 before initially cracking the top 1k in Gameweek 8.

The West Ham United fan said exhaustive pre-season preparation, however, can sometimes be more of a hindrance than a help.

“I’m pretty sure I spent less preparation time on Gameweek 1 than in previous seasons.

“It’s an increasing feeling there’s not much to be gained by putting together a team before the last day or so before the Gameweek 1 deadline, and probably something to be lost by constant tinkering.

“I do remember spending a lot of time trying to find information about David Silva. He had been away with his family because his son was born prematurely.

“But the previous season he had played a lot of minutes and I felt he was being overlooked as a proven FPL asset. His family situation had been uncertain but it appeared his return was imminent.

“I had him in my Gameweek 1 team and he didn’t play but then Kevin De Bruyne got injured and I thought: ‘When Silva’s back, he’s nailed!’ As far as Manchester City players go, he was, and he got five goals and two assists in his next 11 matches.”

Adam had the foresight to recruit Ryan Fraser (£6.4m), Aaron Wan-Bissaka (£4.6m), Sadio Mane (£10.3m), Mohamed Salah (£13.2m), Trent Alexander-Arnold (£5.8m) and Benjamin Mendy (£6.1m) ahead of Gameweek 1 but even the world number one had to endure the pain of seeing his benched assets break the ten-point barrier – something that happened to him on 13 occasions during 2018/19.

“Ouch, just looked at my Gameweek 1 squad,” Adam said. “Wan-Bissaka third on my bench with 12 points! I think that happened to a lot of us.”

A Change of Approach

Adam wasn’t overly convinced by Richarlison as a Fantasy asset

Adam took a leaf out of former winner Simon March’s book this season.

The 2018/19 champion said that consistency was the key to his own success – something we have heard in many Meet the Manager videos over the last year.

“My approach has changed over the last two seasons,” Adam said. “I have tried to take a consistent approach to decision making – making specific decisions on the same basis right through the whole nine months of the game.

“My suspicion is that consistency is more important than the approach itself. I’m not stating anything new here, as Simon March long ago said: ‘Consistency is your differential’.”

When asked if anything went wrong in his FPL-winning season, the New Zealander added that deviating from his own steadfast approach, rather than an individual Fantasy asset flopping, represents a misstep.

“For me, something going wrong is doing something against your own system of decision-making without good reason.

“I have never got over the feeling that Richarlison is an FPL ‘question mark’. Certainly, at the £7.1m price tag he got to, I felt he was not proven value for that.

“But he got moved up front and everyone was getting him in, and I convinced myself he was ‘out of position’ value at the £7.0m I bought him for.

“But it always felt like a decision that had been made for me rather than one I’d made, and the moment Calvert-Lewin started a match up front I transferred Richarlison out.

“I’m not saying I’m right about Richarlison, by the way. He’ll probably smash it next season. But I guess my point is that to my mind, something ‘going wrong’ is not a player you got in on the basis of a considered, consistent transfer approach not providing you points. It’s doing something against your better judgement, irrespective of the results.”

Words of Wisdom

In this age of self-styled experts, Adam’s humbleness after winning FPL is refreshing.

The Wellington native even described himself as a “one-season wonder” in our interview, despite a finish of 10,847 in 2017/18 evidence to the contrary.

When asked if he could provide a single bit of advice, Adam says that Fantasy managers ought to first establish their own unwavering approach, rather than take on board every statistic and viewpoint that is offered up on social media and beyond.

“Work out for yourself a consistent approach to dealing with the overwhelming mass of information and opinion that’s out there,” Adam said.

“There’s nothing wrong with that information and opinion, there’s just too much of it for one human brain.

“Go out there having decided what it is you’re looking for and don’t get distracted by every passing stat and tweet.”

We’ll be hearing more from Adam on Monday morning in the second and final part of our interview, with the new FPL champion discussing transfers, chip strategy, Double Gameweeks, captaincies and best buys of 2018/19.

Fantasy Football Scout memberships for the 2019/20 season will be available to buy from Saturday 1 June.

    Well done, Adam.

Am I correct in reading this as your consistent approach is:
    A) have a means of filtering the mass of information, and
    B) only buy FPL assets proven at their price point?

Congratulations Adam, enjoy the win the best way you can. You are a motivation to every FPL Manager as the competition is always on high gear season in season out.
Picking pointers here and there, making sound judgement and having a personal strategy indeed helps, I can attest to that. With the Fantasy Scout Tools, definitely I am trying them out next Season. Been keen on their posts and members on Twitter and realy helped. I guess personally I can get better.

    Congratulations again.

It is quite refreshing to see the sort of "I'm a one season wonder" attitude as it admits to winning FPL being a humongous fluke.

There is no true enlightened "this is the secret to being number 1" instead it is "this is a sensible way to do well in the game and then maybe if you basically win the lottery, you could also end up being #1"

      Pretty much.

You can do all the prep in the world, but all it takes is a few players to underperform for a few weeks or get injured and you’re playing catch up.

Still, it’s a terrific achievement to win it all, so well done to Adam.

At least this bloke has been registered on here for 2-3 years. Not like that one guy a couple of years ago who was leading going into GW37 and at that point headhunted by Mark to join the FFS league. Turns out he had never heard of FFS until that stage and the week after he bottled the OR win in spectacular fashion despite leading comfortably for months.

Agreed. The trouble with people on here saying this that it becomes a self-fulfilling prophecy - FPL Towers see what's expected on the various FF sites and think "7.5 for Robbo - OK then"

Why would they need to give him a season at a lower price though? Players get massive price jumps after massive seasons

Kane went from 5.5 to about 10.0
Bale would have been something similar in his breakout year

We’ve had multiple 8.0 defenders in seasons past, none of whom got near robbo this year

Personally I’d be shocked if he was less than 7.5 and think he could well be 8.0. Likely same for VVD, and TAA possibly won’t be far behind them

Also bear in mind - there’s also the chance (however slight) that he becomes the first 8.5 defender

Given that he is the highest scoring defender of all time in a single season, it’s not beyond the realms of possibility that he’s the highest priced defender to ever be in the game

IMO, he has to be less then $12.5m. He was $12.5m at the beginning of last season and that was coming off back to back seasons with 29 goals. A dip in his output should result in a lower price tag.

But the dip was largely due to injuries. I think they have to price Kane based on an assumption that he'll be healthy. This past season he got a return every 105 minutes; the season before it was every 99 minutes. His price won't - and shouldn't - drop much.

Robbo and Trent shouldn’t be less than 7.5m or we’ll have lfc effective ownership of >200% all season long. All three nailed on pool defenders should be at least 7.5m

Sterling at 12m will be a real issue if he gets benched a couple of times.
Kdb will walk into many teams at that price.
Every season I say I will go big in midfield and cheap in attack as the midfielders get the most points but it’s hard to resist those sexy premium strikers

      1. AuFeld

Worth it at $12m. 6.9ppm and missed four matches all season. There is a chance he would have surpassed Salah's total score if he played every match. His minutes per point suggest so.

FPL need to price players based on their points expectancy or everyone will own TAA and Robbo next year. Whats the point owning forwards if they are severely overpriced based on defenders.

Because you have to own, and play forwards. Defenders have usually been the best value for me but that tends to apply to 4.5 as much as 7.5

This article. Last straw for me. Won't be renewing membership. Too much emphasis on money making and click bait now. I appreciate it's a business and Mark is a shrewd man but the soul of this site went when Mark went.

Now it's just a souless money making shell led by Munday whom I just can't take to. Not very likeable anyway but then when I see his lefty views on Twitter, that cemented it. I'm aware my right leaning political views will not be very common here but just being honest. It grates on me.

FPL General's weekly article annoyed me too. Another money grabber whom I guess probably got paid for his articles too.

When I first joined almost 5 years ago, this was a much better place. Anyway, I'm just 1 person that I'm sure FFS won't miss but I really do believe that Twitter is where the future is and you can get all the stats for nothing there anyway.

It's not about money, the price is dirt cheap tbf. It's just I don't want to support it anymore.

      Sorry to see you go!

I'm surprised to hear that about FPL General's articles, they seem to have done quite well for most users

Tbh what you mention is the main reason I'll never see Twitter as a viable alternative. People just can't help spewing their politics all over that platform, so what I pay to keep using this site is a small price to avoid all that rubbish.

Just heard the news.. Next season all paid members of FFS will be given an extra chip to use during the season!! ..much wow

That's how you get a million members Mr Munday, not this weak af shill show.

I joke but really wouldn't be surprised if something like this emerges.

Guys.....of course it's a bit of a click-bait self publicising headline, but I'm not sure the abuse is necessary, take it with a pinch of salt like adverts on tv, I'm not a member but been on here for the last 3 seasons (although only have a 1 next to my name for some reason) - I come here for the discussion and general information, thoughts and ideas about strategy, transfers, and different approaches to the game - I'm not a stats man so don't believe membership is necessary for a few xg type articles etc (lies, damn lies and statistics etc), but at least in the deadzone it's still a good forum for our hobby/interest

Trippier to Napoli close to completion for 22m.

KWP/Aurier to be good options next season?

pretty sure spurs would be lining up a replacement/back-up, however if not then aurier potentially an option, but wasn't overally impressed with spurs defensively this season, not up to their usual points return, maybe better options at the 5.5-6.5 price range

Can't believe the amount of people pissed off at this article. Yes it's self-promotional, can you expect anything else? In the society we live in, we have to make money. FFS isn't a charity, it employs people. This clickbaity article is the exact sort of thing that attracts new members for them. Sure it's not particularly "nice" but neither is capitalism (Not saying we should be communist or whatever, just that reality is what it is). The site tends to strive to listen to overall user views, as seen by Geoff's attempts to canvas all your views for site improvements, and following them. You wouldn't castigate any other paid service for advertising, why would you denigrate FFS for it?

FFS seems to be doing well. They have transitioned from being a company that was so small that they were exempt from producing accounts to one where there are required to produce micro-accounts. Capital and reserves are going up every year and because of their model (i.e. don't need lots of tangible fixed assets) that is mostly cash.

Fair play to them for making a good go of it as a business.

I find the article interesting for two reasons.

One is that the only people on site right now are basically hardcore who can’t live without FPL (inc myself in that). They are either already members or having taken a stand against membership for whatever reason. The timing of this article might be better in the lead up to GW1 when the sight is busy again.

The second is the mostly cynical reaction to it, yes he is going to play up the site, in the highly unlikely event I win, I’d feel compelled to do the same. In truth I use it the same as Adam, mainly the ticker and members articles. I’ve dabbled in stats but really Jontys goals imminent is the only table I really like. Stuff like xG helps a bit as well to stop me getting that player who just braced with an xG of .10.

Anyway, the truth is FFS has changed, it can’t go back, bleating on about how great it used to be isn’t productive for anyone. Maybe get involved in writing the articles if you think they are below the standard you expect.

Couldn't agree more we must have some real Angels with no drive towards self interest at all in the community here the scathing judgement the site is getting it's ridiculous. I come here to chat about fantasy football strategy ect read up info have a banter. If the website I am on is promoting itself at the same time why would I have an issue with that? Heck if anything I would be grateful for all the free information I have received and keep my mouth shut.

No football to talk about, people complain. There's a pattern of this every year after the season ends and it's quiet on here!

What a sad bit of advertising. Maybe FFS should have charged £1 to read this article. Can’t give away the “secrets” like that.

That is just not true. Some of the more critical comments are based on the opinion of those who have posted them . To describe some of these as naive and juvenile is presumptious in the extreme. Is this just because some people have a different opinion to yourself ?
A few of the articles in the last few months have been factually incorrect and poorly written .
This is a business and as such attracts revenue streams. Regardless of the sum involved some choose to pay for membership which entitles them to question and criticise.

Thinking Robertson is going to cost 8.5m next season might be stunning and naive, but I think it's unfair to call it juvenile.
