FPL lessons learned from the Champions League final

The Champions League final may have failed to live up to the hype, but there were still a handful of lessons to be learned for Fantasy Premier League managers.

Liverpool shook off the disappointment of losing last year’s final, as well as missing out on the Premier League title, to beat Tottenham 2-0.

In truth, it was a poor game, not helped by the Reds getting an early goal.

In fact, no player scored more than 6.55 on the BBC’s player-rater app, Liverpool goalkeeper Alisson edging their man of the match award.

In arguably unfortunate circumstances, Moussa Sissoko was penalised in the box as Sadio Mané kicked the ball at his chest, which ricocheted onto his upper arm.

Mohamed Salah reminded us once again of his position in the penalty pecking order by dispatching the spot-kick two minutes into the game.

With James Milner‘s regularity of starts continuing to diminish, he was named on the bench for the Champions League final, Salah is facing less competition for penalties.

After the 2018/19 pre-season campaign, it looked as Mané might be in with a shout for them, but Saturday proved once again that Salah still has that advantage over his colleague when it comes to Fantasy appeal.

Either way, an early lead for Liverpool proved to be the worst thing for neutral spectators hoping for an open contest.

It allowed them to spend the rest of the final doing what they’ve best this season: defend.

Jurgen Klopp’s men never had to stretch themselves or go on the offensive for an extended period during the match.

Their attacking full-backs Andrew Robertson and Trent AlexanderArnold provided some width but spent most of the game considerably more withdrawn than usual.

That made sure that Spurs did not have much joy down the flanks and it became almost too easy for Virgil van Dijk to keep Harry Kane under wraps.

It was a bold call by Spurs boss Mauricio Pochettino to start the England international so soon after his recovery from the latest ankle injury, although he does have a decent goal-scoring record against Liverpool.

It was his first start since sustaining the knock against Manchester City in the first leg of the Champions League quarter-finals back on April 9.

Pochettino deployed Kane as the lone centre-forward in a 4-2-3-1 system, which arguably limited what they could achieve in attack.

After some success operating in a front-two, Son Heungmin was stationed on the left of attacking midfield, while semi-final hat-trick hero Lucas Moura was only on the bench.

Not surprisingly, the pace and guile of the Brazilian winger was what sparked Spurs into life in the last 25 minutes, but it was too little too late.

As already mentioned, Liverpool seemed largely content to sit back and let Spurs struggled to break them down.

In fact, the Reds ended up recording just 35.4% possession in the game.

Admittedly, Alisson was forced into a few big saves in the closing stages but Spurs never really looked like scoring.

That failure to trouble Liverpool could potentially spark a debate in Pochettino’s mind about how to correctly use Kane.

This was not the first time this season that Spurs’ tendency to focus all their play on their star striker has left them a bit too one-dimensional.

The success of Son and Moura in his absence could see Pochettino move to a front-two for 2019/20, but we’ll have to keep an eye on their pre-season campaign for indications of that.

Tottenham Hotspur XI (4-2-3-1): Lloris; Rose, Vertonghen, Alderweireld, Trippier; Winks (Moura 66′), Sissoko (Dier 74′); Son, Eriksen, Alli (Llorente 82′); Kane.

Liverpool XI (4-3-3): Alisson; Robertson, van Dijk, Matip, Alexander-Arnold; Wijnaldum (Milner 62′), Fabinho, Henderson; Mané (Gomez 90′), Firmino (Origi 58′), Salah.

Time for a few transfers between now and then.

Couldn't agree more, can't see their defense letting up, and if fixtures good, could be defensive triple up with Allison

Tough round in ICC Fantasy World Cup.

You have three chips so you need to pick players from at least 3 matches (of the 5 in this round). You have to play the TC chip in the game your captain plays otherwise it is worthless.

But weather could complicate things, particularly in the AFG vs SL and WI vs AUS games.

I am thinking go heavy on England (depending on which way the toss goes), but don't captain any players in that game so you can use one of the other chips. Captaincy is tough this round because of the weather and competitiveness of the other games.

Considering we haven't seen India yet, they're a bit of a lottery too. Might go for a differential captain this time and hope for the best, then concentrate on the bowling & batting chips.

Thank you. I’m either all england bat and wk and india bowl or in need of a total rethink. At the moment, praying for england bat first I am on:

          Buttler, hope (tc)

          Bairstow, root, roy

Stokes (boundary bonus england pakistan), andile, pandya

Chahal, bumrah, sami (wicket bonus india sa)

4 Indian bowlers likely to be shami kumar bumrah and chahal or is yadav a starter over of the the quicks?

I don’t know, unfortunately. Been deliberating over these bowlers but I understand soton pitch will benefit spinners.

I'm changing plans now as Wood may come in for Plunkett, so thinking of :

            Buttler

            Kohli (TC) Munro Root Roy

            Stokes Shakib

            Tahir Boult Mustafizur Ferguson

Batting on Eng v Pak, Bowling on NZ v Bang.

              What’s the news on plunkett?

Shakib a really nice choice as he is batting 3. I feel confined by my chip strategy (pile into two games and pick a tc from a third). Nice to get your tc on kohli. I managed to royally mess up last time and captained amla who not only did badly but also played in the two games i chipped.

Wood nearly started first game, and seen as more of an x factor than Plunkett. But the lineup will be out before the deadline.

I'm trying to get a range of teams in my lineup, but keeping away from Aus and WI incase that game is disrupted to much be the weather.

Not too keen on the Munro pick, might go for a third all rounder in Ali

Thanks for wood info. I am very new to cricket but for now fantasy skills (however limited) seem to be transferable.

I like the principle of the range but I suppose it doesn’t feel optimal to me. Got spoiled by my twelve wickets on wicket bonus for england saf in the opener. Fell a bit after that though!

Alas, back on some British soil & what a memorable few days it has been over in Madrid following the Spurs!!!

I would like to give a massive shoutout to all Liverpool supporters. I went over to Madrid with a prehibition that there would be trouble from the scouse contingent but I couldn't have been more wrong. There was mutual respect between boths sets of fans throughout the day. The final whistle saw Spurs fans congratulating Liverpool fans and Liverpool fans consoling Spurs fans. The experience in the Spurs fan zone was absolutely immense! So whilst the journey (so far) has comprised a plane, boat, minivan, buses, the metro, several hostels, and about 12 hours sleep altogether over the past 4 days, I would absolutely do it all over again if I could.

Congrats to all Liverpool fans! Also very proud of our boys, what a journey it’s been!

Despise the fact all southerners expect scousers to be violent and abusive. It was the spurs fans singing “you’ll never Get a job” at them in hate, the Liverpool fans aren’t as prehistoric. Spurs fans were the problem and were saved by Liverpool not sinking to their level.

Just because it worked once on a different pitch in different conditions doesn't mean it will work again. Pakistan will have spent all their time working on the short ball since the West Indies match. It was clear after the first couple of overs - the short ball is not zipping through on this pitch.

They were extremely poor against short pitched deliveries to be fair. It remains to be seen how the remainder of the Pakistan batting plays the short ball.

Dressage not the worst, elegant interaction between horse and rider. Prefer it to the cruelty of the Grand National.

As a Man Utd fan the realisation has set in that this is the lowest point in the last 30 years of the club’s history (not on straight league position obviously, but on the general state of the club)

The scary thing is though, that the club really seem to be staring into the abyss of another minimum 5 years in the wilderness unless something seriously changes structurally

        I don’t disagree

The club have the resources and some of the infrastructure to if not dominate world football, at least be competitive with the best

        Instead they are a shambles

Glazers, Woodward, the Board, a large proportion of the dressing room - all are toxic

At some point things will take a turn for the better. I think that this will coincide with the appointment of a quality coach who can attract top players . OGS just doesn't cut it in my opinion .

Needs tactical changes IMO. I still don't know what Man Utd's style of play is. I would like to see Martial, Rashford and Lingard (unless a better RW can be signed) start up top and Utd playing a more direct and counter-attacking style of football. Use their pace and trickery to better effect.

The real issue IMO is the midfield, especially now with Herrera gone. It is either slow (see Mata, Matic) or unmotivated (see Pogba, Fred). Slow midfielders are useless if you want to play a high press because they will get done. Unmotivated midfielders are useless all the time.

Utd need tactical changes like a crashed car needs its radio fixed - much more fundamentally broken things need attention before you even get near tactics

How can you expect Man Utd to attract the best players with the team as it is? Do you think Utd can get those promising youngsters and superstars when the better teams in Europe will be chasing them? Why would you sign for Utd when you can sign for Bayern, Real, Barcelona, Liverpool, Man City, Dortmund, PSG etc.

It is now about getting into the Top 4 consistently. Get into the CL every season and players will start to want to come. Man Utd have the squad to get into the Top 4. Look at how poor Arsenal's squad is and Chelsea are about to lose their best player and put under a transfer ban. Mourinho got Utd to finish 2nd in 17/18. It was boring football, yes, but you got to do what you got to do to get a CL place.

There is no silver bullet for Man Utd. The old Utd would have got the best out of their youngsters and shown fight and determination. A lot of that has gone now. Some humility from Utd would get them a long way IMO. Get back to winning games even if it is with crap football. Get the momentum to build and get the feeling back that beating Man Utd is difficult.

I’ll go back to my opening point - As a Man Utd fan the realisation has set in that this is the lowest point in the last 30 years of the club’s history (not on straight league position obviously, but on the general state of the club)

The scary thing is though, that the club really seem to be staring into the abyss of another minimum 5 years in the wilderness unless something seriously changes structurally

I totally disagree that “it’s about tactics” as you put it.

Tactics are not some magical pill a team swallows and suddenly starts dominating. Tactics are the tip of an iceberg that has many more fundamental, foundational aspects below the surface - hence why I say Man Utd focusing on tactics is like trying to fix the radio on a crashed car.

It’s not about attracting the best players - you could parachute Liverpool or man city’s squads into old Trafford and they wouldn’t be winning leagues or champions leagues..

And vice verse you could transplant Klopp or Guardiola into old Trafford & give them the current Man Utd squad and they wouldn’t be winning leagues or champions leagues.

There is a huge gap at Man Utd, a chasm, between where they could/should/have some of the resources and infrastructure to be (winning leagues & champions leagues) -and where they are (trying to qualify for the top 4)

How do they (and how fast can they) bridge that gap? Way above my pay grade.

But if I could wave a magic wand there would be several serious changes made within the club - as I said, glazers, Woodward, board, several sections of the dressing room - either incompetent, unprofessional, toxic and/or all three.

Not sure. Chasing 350 is the highest required ever in a World Cup. I know it is a new era and 350 on this pitch is gettable, but England definitely made mistakes with their bowling and if Pakistan learn from England's mistakes then they have a chance.

The 50k or so people that have gone to the Isle of Man this week to get a chance to see it in the flesh should be an indicator of just how popular the race is.
