Meet the Managers Podcast Archive – Top Tips From FPL’s Most Successful Managers

During the 2018/19 season Fantasy Football Scout started the Meet the Manager video series, where Joe interviews a manager with a stellar track record of success in the Fantasy Premier League game.

Here each interviewee reveals their strategies for success and how they are dealing with the growing popularity of Fantasy Football.

Over the summer each episode is being converted to audio only and released as a podcast.

This week we have started that process with our very first interview, which features Nick, who is better known within the Fantasy Football Scout community and on social media as Triggerlips, and was recorded in September 2018.

Over his 12-year career Nick has finished within the top 1,000 on four occasions, including 2012/13’s finish of 35th. During our interview he discusses the importance of team structure, balancing team funds and coping with the vast array of Fantasy Football advice on social media.

While the bulk of the interview is taken up with non-time sensitive advice Nick does share his then maverick view of being patient with Arsenal’s Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang, who finished the season as joint top-scorer with 22 goals.

Further videos being converted into podcasts this summer feature among others 2014/15 winner Simon March, 2018/19 Fantasy Football Scout Hall of Fame number one Sean Tobin and Fantasy Football Scout’s Mark Sutherns.

Each of our Meet the Manager interviewees reveals an array of different strategies for achieving Fantasy Football glory. As well as creating podcast versions of our Meet the Manager archive, brand new episodes are being planned for the forthcoming campaign.

The podcast version of our first Meet the Manager interview, featuring Nick, is available via this link or the first player below.

In addition, all our podcasts are available via our Soundcloud channel or in the second player below.

Not in the league. I am playing to win the round prizes so lots of gambling. Hence have ignored India and South Africa today and gone heavy on NZ batting in the hope they bat first and score big and the super 4 chip pays off. Did okay on Monday with Eng and Pak bowling with the bowling chip (got 10 wickets). Got Warner (TC) tomorrow.

I truly believe this site should mahe certain vids exclusive for members only. Some of of YouTube vids (ie like the MTM series) are really good, but if in members only, could go into more detail, i don't know, but there has bbee many times watching your vids thinking "why are you handing this info out for free" or do what this other site (& many do) "there's your free stuff, to watch rest, you must sign up be member" end stream, wait a couple secs, restart on here in members or whatever the logistics are

The stats and the members only articles (particularly captaincy). From what I can tell the captaincy articles do need to be more conclusive though and nail their colours to a mast. That would also help with analysis of improving the captaincy decision making process if you can see the past decisions and reflect on what went right or wrong.

The Opta data in a manageable / usable format is the core of what you are paying for though.

Why should FFS have a monopoly on the advice given by veterans presumably for free? The FFS guys just ask generic questions, the value is all from the veterans. If the veterans got paid by FFS to participate there could maybe be a claim for exclusiveness..

Spurs need ready made world class players, all the names being bandied about are prospects but theres not time to waste in the premier league now or liverpool and city will just steam further ahead. but who will want to go there? if levy doesnt convince Pocche he will be out the door to. they are in such a precarious position.

Not much in the market thats world class and fits in Spurs pay system. Could see a swap deal for Isco or Bale.

I'm not certain about Lo Celso, because he was always playing either hot or cold when I saw him. But Ndombele is a world class player and is the prototype of what is going to be expected of midfielders in the future.

you cant call Ndombele world class yet based on two seasons at Lyon. he's not even close. yes he might be the 'new pogba' but anyone buying him is buying a player who may take a season to acclimatise to the prem league. look at Keita at liverpool. spurs need a worldy like Eriksen and im just not sure they can attract that kind of player.

Let’s not get carried away calling a guy world class who:

              - Hasn’t yet played 10 champions league games
              - Has never played a single La Liga, Serie A, Bundesliga or Premier League game,
              - Has never played outside of Ligue 1, and
              - Doesn’t start for France

Is he good in Fifa or Championship Manager or something? The fact that he is being called “The new Pogba” says a lot tbh

Have to agree - one of the best creative midfielders in the world

His goals & assists suffered a little this season with missing 8 starts and also losing set pieces to Trippier, but he was still pretty productive, and even though he certainly wasn’t at his best he’s a fantastic player

Think its such as Eriksen said. If Madrid (or any other big club) comes knocking, he'll do everything to make it work. If not, he'll sign a new contract.

Levy will play hard ball regardless. Its just how he operates.

Eriksen is one of those players that non-spurs fans rave too much about. I myself am a Spurs fan and yes, he has been very good for us over the last 6 years. However, Tottenham are no longer the team we were when he joined. He has been very inconsistent this year and performances fell off a cliff when rumours started surfacing that he might want a new challenge. I trust Levy to get a very good price for him which could fascilitate the introduction of a quicker, faster no 10 who will be able to feed Son and Kane with quicker deliveries, something we have missed recently

      1. boc610

a faster no ten? i think i remember a stat this christmas about him having created 500 chances in the league since he joined, more than an other player. city would eat him up if he became available. you cant just go on the recency bias of this season, and hes not been nearly as bad as your making out

#10s are going out of fashion anyway. Eriksen and Siggy restrict the formations their teams can play because they're so damn good and have to be included. Sure they can play in other positions but they're not as effective there. Getting a nice big pile of cash for Eriksen might not be a bad idea, so they can invest in other areas, Coutinho-style.

      1. Ramboros
        • 8 Years

This is just one of those opinions that I refuse to accept.

Toni Kroos was once a 10 and winger. Modric was once a 10. Those two ended up forming the best central midfield we've seen since Guardiola's Barcelona. David Silva and Kevin de Bruyne were originally 10s, but Guardiola never doubted they could be even better while playing deeper.

Wesley Sneijder was a winger before he became a 10. Özil played on the wing when Diego played as a 10. Players adapt over the course of their career. Some more than others. A player like Mata struggles with modern football not because he's a 10, but because he lacks pace. At Valencia he was a left winger, not a 10. For AVB at Chelsea he was a winger, not a 10. For some reason people made up their mind that he was a 10, when almost every manager has used him on the wing.

Özil is not struggling because he's a 10. He's struggling because he lacks the defensive capability to play deeper like most technical attackers tend to do as they get older. He has also lost a bit of pace. Özil at his best was a counter attacking playmaker. Özil revolutionized the idea of what 10s should be. They were no longer supposed to be these lazy midfielders that came short for simple passes, or strikers that could barely move. 10s had to move around the pitch quickly, and have a drive with the ball that forced defenders to run out of position. Özil was the 10 that contributed to off the ball movement and pressing more than almost every other 10 in the world. That's why he was the chosen 10 for Mourinho's Real Madrid and the reinvigorated Germany.

Eriksen used to be a 10, but barely under Pochettino. He has already undergone the evolution that most 10s do during their career. Alli's introduction to the team in 2015/16 started the repositioning of Eriksen. Eriksen started the season as a 10, but gradually Alli took over that role in the 4-2-3-1.

Eriksen has sometimes played as one of the central midfielders in a midfield trio, which has particularly been the case this season. Sissoko's first game in the 2017/18 season (Everton away) saw Eriksen transition into this role for the first time. Pochettino recognized that Sissoko is not a defensive midfielder. He needs to be able to drive forward, unhinged by positional discipline and ball distribution. In the traditional 4-2-3-1 and 3-4-3 that Tottenham had been using prior seasons, that's difficult. Those formations already have stationary players in the space that Sissoko wants to run into. Hence Eriksen dropping deeper to take care of passing while removing one of the pivote.

Eriksen's move to the deeper central midfield role has happened seamlessly for several reasons. First of all Dembele and Wanyama have struggled with their fitness for a while, rendering the double pivote useless for Pochettino. Secondly Alli is a very adapt player for both a second striker role and a central midfield role. That allowed Tottenham to turn their 3-4-3 into a 3-5-2 with either Son or Alli playing alongside Kane. In their 4-1 win against Liverpool last season, Alli and Eriksen both played in central midfield with Son and Kane up top. That's the game that convinced Pochettino to use a striker partnership with Kane and Lucas/Son more. As 3 atb gradually yielded worse results for Tottenham, Pochettino started utilizing a midfield diamond with the same strengths as described earlier. The Sissoko/Eriksen partnership was maintained. Alli got to play in his favoured 10 role. Son got to complement Kane's lack of pace while playing up top.

That's fair, some 10s can be good 8s. And perhaps Eriksen is still effective in a deeper role and contributing to Poch's high press.

But I question how effective these players are in comparison to a player specialised to that position. Liverpool are one of the world's best at pressing, and all three of their central midfielders tend to be solid defensively. Football is constantly evolving, and becoming more physically demanding. I just question where traditional 10s fit into this new era, at the highest level, withdrawn or not.

It's why Portugal are my favourites. They have all the advantages 🙄

Tomorrow's semi is too close to call. Netherlands have a very strong core, with Van Dijk, De Ligt, De Jong and Wijnaldum, but England have some brilliant wide players. Can't wait 🙂

Portugal are a boring team IMO. Apart from Ronaldo. They remind me of Sarri's Chelsea with Hazard. I would be looking to man mark Ronaldo today (old style where you just follow him around the pitch) and try to keep him out of the game.

This is the type of game that would suit Switzerland IMO. Underdogs and can play their defensive style.

Switzerland is not just Shaqiri and Xhaka. They have a really good manager who has built a strong and young team over the last 4 years. They have beaten Belgium 5-2 last year and let's not forget they have the top scorer of the Portuguese league 😉
Portugal is the favourite, especially if Ronaldo and Bernardo produce a world-class match, but I think it's gonna be tougher for them than the majority of people think

I mean they finished above Belgium, they're a great team. But I still think they'll struggle against players like Bernardo Silva. Good odds at the bookies if you fancy the Swiss though, I've seen 5/1.

Hardly interrupting the flow is it? What’s your problem? If people weren’t talking about it would be even more dead. I don’t see you posting much about football.

I would like to get involved in the Cricket conversation but I struggle to differentiate whos who since they all play in white.

It’s quite typical of FFS that some feel Spurs would be better off replacing Christian Eriksen (proven top class premier league player coming off the back of a disappointing season) with what are at best risks in:

“Lo Celso” (24 next birthday, doesn’t speak English, has played 2 full seasons in his career, one in Spain for Betis, one in France)

    And

“Ndombele” (Hasn’t yet played 10 champions league games, Has never played a single La Liga, Serie A, Bundesliga or Premier League game, Has never played outside of Ligue 1, and Doesn’t start for France)

Of course they could be decent players, they could even end up very good, but lets not get carried away chaps just because they might be good on Fifa or Football Manager, eh?

And yes I realise Poch himself way want Lo Celso, and that all three may not be exact like for like for like players pisitionally... it the point still stands - hype for hypes sake

It isn't about replacing Eriksen because he is a crap player. It is replacing him if he is an unhappy player. How many times have we seen the negative effect an unhappy player can have on the first XI performance and the wider squad?

I’’ve actually no issue with him being replaced, my issue is with the failure to acknowledge that they will in likelihood be a weaker team by replacing him with these risky biscuits from the continent

Obviously I'm biased but Piotr Zielinski of Napoli could be a great repplacement.
Bags of potential, makes him no difference which leg he is using (even from set pieces) still young.
He is lacking confidence at times but in my opinion under a manager like Poch he would thrive.

I don't think many thought Liverpool would be a stronger team without Coutinho either.

But he was replaced with pace on the wings, stronger central-midfielders, and Liverpool thrived as a result. It enabled them to press and counter with intensity that playmakers like Countinho and Eriksen hinder. Doesn't matter how talented the player is, if lesser players come in that suit the system better, the team will do better. I don't think anyone questions how good Eriksen is, but with the right recruitment, the overall team can be improved.

And I've never seen Lo Celso or Ndombele play, so no idea what they bring...

That’s a very fair appraisal, good to see the lack of hyperbole about these so called world class midfielders who no one can actually be sure will even cut it in the premiership let alone dominate

I also think Coutinho would have been worth at least 2 extra points (potentially even more) for Liverpool if he’d been there this year and they would have won the league, but impossible to say for sure

Coutinho leaving has made Liverpool a more balanced side in my opinion.

As I said, it’s impossible to say for sure, but in my own opinion, I think his quality would easily have been worth 2 points over a season, possibly more

Who would you drop for Coutinho? Mane? Or switch to a 4231?

I wouldn’t necessarily drop anyone - but I do feel that (at a minimum) having his quality in the squad would have been worth an extra 2 points over the season

Below his best this season yes, but Eriksen is top class.

He's been their spark so often over the years, their hardest runner (consistently has the highest distance covered stats) and probably one of the best Spurs have ever had.

Impossible to replace like for like.

Good news for those with NZ bowlers who played the bowling chip.

Unreal, two wickets and a catch catapulted him up to 105 points for me.

Somehow still on a green for the week...

Decent enough for bowling chip so far with henry boult and Ferguson with shakib bowling to go.

Kohli big score would have been perfect. Very annoying

That's good from 4 players. I got 10 wickets in the England game with 6 players so better than me. Hopefully Warner(TC) and Guptill, Williamson, Munro, Shakib can get save my Round.
