How to cover Liverpool defence after price hikes

Hefty price hikes for Andrew Robertson (£7.0m) and Trent Alexander-Arnold (£7.0m) will force Fantasy Premier League managers into some tough decisions ahead of 2019/20.

The fact that they will cost the same for the new campaign makes choosing between the two full-backs harder than we expected – and the fact they are £7.0m means that owning both is even less of a realistic prospect.

Had Alexander-Arnold come in at £6.5m, it might have skewed the ownership figures in his favour at the expense of Robertson, so we have further proof that the game-makers at FPL enjoy seeing us squirm.

With Virgil van Dijk (£6.5m) the initial undercut asset and Joe Gomez, Joel Matip and Dejan Lovren priced at £5.5m, it means that there is actually still a range of choices for Fantasy managers to choose from when picking their Liverpool defender(s).

      I see him as probably great for a large chunk of the season, but at least to begin with, I see no reason to go without Salah + Sterling and getting all 3 isn't feasible

      He's in mine, those first 11 or so fixtures look great. Don't know whether now being in his 30s he will get rotated a bit more though. Surely they either show some faith in Jesus or get someone in his place.

        No surprise really, there's no premium players there.

        Expect Pulisic to come in above that, but good chance to find value there I think

            Oh definitely, it's a very different team to what we're used to! Feels a bit between eras now, post Hazard but a little before the youth prospects can take control.

      Both Kante and Noble in the starting 11 suggests it lacks some balance.

      Making a good team is a lot harder this year - might be a very good thing I suppose. Should be clearer in a month or two though, so wouldn't stress it right now

      Got the same front 5 and v similar 3 LIV/MC defenders but also Zaha, so no room for Everton defenders but put it like that and it sounds like a good swap. Zaha at 7.0 seems good though.

        It's bizarre but I'm on 3 of them at the moment. I guess the trouble with that is, as soon as someone like Aguero or Auba hits a brace, or worse a hattie, your rank gets a kicking.

    Is it just me who found the picking of your team really boring this year I feel everyone is over priced or value is spot on. I know it’s hard to find the cheap gems before anyone’s even started playing but other than replace rb for AWB I can’t seem to find many players who I think Hm could be a good price yet.

        Maybe not entertaining but I knew who I wanted and I have them. Obviously there are a few spots that I will play around with but I have my basic structure and the 7 players that I knew I would definitely start with.

        Do you think? I think TAA should be 6.5 with the risk of rotation digne pereira Doherty all over priced I think the defence is the most overpriced tbh, I’m not gonna pick Doherty or pereira over a city defender at that price.

          CHO, Pedro at 7m while CHO is injured daniel James I cant see just being bought to sit on the bench 6m is fair. Martial 7.5 Could be a gem should he start over Sanchez, lots of ifs and buts would have to see how pre season goes see if it gives any better indication.

        FPL have to be more in-tune with the market, price players to attract that level of doubt. No use pricing him at 10m when nobody will buy and he becomes a dead stock.

    Will Zaha still be a good buy if he moves to Arsenal? Seems to be a lot harder to get points a big club. No one else in the 6-7mil really doing it for me though.

          I do if he goes to arsenal as other than the front 2 no one else can score or assist so even more him. Ozil is gone and all they have in midfield is a lot of defensive midfielders so the ball is bound to go through zaha.

        Palace said they won't sell him AND AwB, I'm happy with him staying, at least he plays every week but at Arsenal he could do well also. Only player from my auto pick that I kept.

        I just feel jimi is a bit more reliable of points compare to Jota although Jota did finish stronger towards the end of the season. One to keep an eye on in preseason. Thanks

          I agree but that extra £1m could turn your first sub into a fairly decent defender. I've always liked a strong bench though. Overall it's a really strong team.

      He plays on Deulofeu's side of the pitch, so won't be in the box much because Deulo's usually on the shoulder of the defender. He has to occupy the space behind him when he cuts inside. So long shots and assists mainly imo.

      Pereyra gets in the box because he's on Deeney's side, who drops deep and leaves space ahead of him for Pereyra to get into.

      Matches up perfectly with their returns last season, so I'm pretty sure I have this right. Obviously tactics are fluid, and there's a lot of roaming, but this is the core of the tactic imo.

        Capoue and Doucouré the other way around actually. Capoue needs to cover Holebas' aggressive forward runs.

      So many variables for this, depends how nailed your starting 11 are. Generally a strong bench is more useful later on in the season as there is more rotation and so more subs will be used.

    Do you think the potential departure of Zaha will hinder the prospects of Milivojevic? Vast majority of penalties and free kicks won by CPFC have been won by Zaha. Would Maddison be a better option at the same 7mil price tag?

          Mentioned before above if you want a Bournemouth def because of fixtures then look at mepham as he will play more than last season but Bournemouth do tend to concede every game. Krul is tough one but I would just be tempted with a Brighton double and keep the 0.5 for somewhere else

      Downgrade Krul to a 4.0, turn one of TAA or Robertson into VVD.

      Use that 1m saving to turn Ake into a decent 6m premium def

      Also consider Heaton over Ryan

      Going TAA and VVD as TAA trolled me towards the end of the season so I’m not going without him. Would like to go with TAA and robbo but the 0.5 is too precious at the moment

    Anyone have any stats on when Wilson picked up most of his FPL points? His PPM is amazing but I seem to remember him smashing it to start the season - did he have form in the latter half of the season?

      He was doing it on the road late season, hit some good form but would blank in easy homes, odd one, had to hold nerve to get rewards.

      Amazing start with the easy first 10 fixtures, injured in the middle of the season when Bournemouth also happened to have most of their tough fixtures and then did ok at the end of the season. Most of the time their wasn't much between King and Wilson.

      Not for me, don’t like 5 at the back. Pogba is a no and mili is an iffy one unless he gets pens. Salah or Mané is a must as well

      same as mine basically, just Laporte and Zaha instead of Maddison and Luiz. Heaton seems like a waste of .5mil with Ederson to be honest.
