Salah v Mane: how they compare after FPL price changes

Fantasy managers who are looking at owning just one premium Liverpool midfielder in 2019/20 may face something of a dilemma.

The relaunch of Fantasy Premier League has seen the gap in price between Mohamed Salah and Sadio Mane narrow considerably.

The Egyptian has dropped to £12.5m while his teammate, who shared the Golden Boot with Salah in 2018/19, has risen to £11.5m.

The price gap between the two players was £3.5m at the start of 2018/19.

Owning both premium midfield options isn’t impossible, of course, but it would leave a shortfall of cash elsewhere and sacrifices would have to be made in other positions.

Given Manchester City’s favourable-looking run of matches from Gameweeks 1 to 11, many FPL bosses will be needing a considerable chunk of their £100m budget to acquire Raheem Sterling (£12.0m) and/or Sergio Aguero (£12.0m), too.

Liverpool’s opening eight fixtures are among the most appealing in the top flight and indeed the Reds sit second in our Season Ticker from Gameweeks 1 to 8.

Jurgen Klopp’s side face newly promoted Norwich City and Sheffield United during that run, as well as three teams who finished in the bottom eight of the top flight last season: Newcastle United, Burnley and Southampton.

The Gameweek 3 visit of Arsenal, who kept fewer away clean sheets than any Premier League club in 2018/19, is also enticing from an attacking perspective.

In this latest Members’ article, we will run a direct statistical comparison to weigh up the pros and cons of each asset.

As well as the usual goal threat and creativity comparisons, we’ll be assessing their record against ‘lesser’ sides (given Liverpool’s favourable run at the start of 2019/20) using our new Flat-Track Bully tool.

WTHeck happened there! I’ve not stopped my car so quickly since my children were toilet training! Emergency stop down a side road to autocomplete and enter a team! Judging by Zappacosta and AC’s prices I’d imagine Reece James will be 4.5m.
Could be a great option at some point if he can oust Azpi from the RB spot.

Well he surely won’t oust Azpi AND zappa will he? I would imagine he is likely to be a back up CDM and CB more than RB this year

Azpi left back, Reece James right back (when returns from injury). Heard it here first.

      Chelsea squad is currently:

      GK: Kepa, Caballero
      LB: Emerson, Alonso
      CB: Rudiger, Luiz, Christensen, Zouma
      RB: Azpilicueta, Zappacosta
CM: Kovacic, Jorginho, Kante, Barkley, Loftus-Cheek, Drinkwater, Bakoyoko
      LM: Hudson-Odoi, Willian
      RM: Pulisic, Pedro
      FW: Giroud, Batshuayi, Abraham

That is actually quite a full squad even ignoring the youngsters like Mount, Ampadu and James.

Some of them will move on (e.g., Bakayoko, Drinkwater), but even then Chelsea look well equipped if the new manager can get the players to perform.

Chelsea is the one I’ll be monitoring most closely in preseason - I’m hoping Luiz retains his spot. If I do go huge at the back I’ll want a spread of teams.

Christensen almost guaranteed to be first choice CB IMHO. Likely alongside Rudiger. We shall see in pre-season though.

Arnie anyone? Awful first fixture but a lovely run after that. Rotates well with JWP/Redmond over the first few weeks.

I'm focusing on nailing my defense with hitters where i'd usually look at one 4.5 rotation and then and looking at the rotation of the 4/5th mid and 2nd striker

Avoiding Mo - it’s the same issue as last season with returning wc players.

I really like the Kane price as he’s back in the conversation - effectively positioned as Sterling was last year. I wonder if he’ll start as a similar differential pick.

Right you lot, I'm on the lesser-spotted, never-before-heard-of 5-2-3 formation.
        Get this:

        Ryan (Button)
Robbo, TAA, VVD, Laporte, Zinchenko (can you see what I did there?)
Siggy, Zaha (Dendonker, Hayden, Stephens 3x4.5)
        Aguero, Kane, Jiminez

Way I see it, every team will try to shut up shop against City and Liverpool in those easy opening fixtures. Few will offer much in attack, so I see lots of clean sheets and not that many goals from City and Pool.

        Go on, slay me!

The thought crossed my mind to try it. If I do I’d have Jota over Jim and think about the Kane Auba double act - both home boys at heart and they dovetail perfectly.

Triple City and double Liverpool here - Afcon issues

    Ederson
    Robbo TAA Coleman Ward
    KdB Sterling Zaha Redmond
    Kane Jota

    Button Gibson Hayden Success

It’s effectively a ten man side as it stands. Ward is decent bench fodder but no starter.

Might swap out Ederson - more likely I’ll switch KdB for Siggy

    Outrageous prediction time:

If they all stay fit, TAA, Robbo & Salah’s total scores (including Salah’s captaincy games) won’t be too far shy of 1000 points this season

    26.5m looks cheap

      1. Maximus Bonimus Pointimus
        • 14 Years

        I reckon they’ll go close

        - TAA 200+
        - Robbo 200+
        - Mo 250+ *2 = 500+

900 should be fairly doable - an extra 15-20 for Mo with captaincy doesn’t be long closing the gap up towards the 1000 mark

Can’t believe he had only 15% goal conversion last year, if that progresses even slightly he’s right back up towards silly scores

So since those who finish high up tend to take an early wildcard, is it worth planning more than GW4 (1st International break) in advance? Or would you go to GW8 which is the 2nd?
