Braces for Mane and Pulisic as Jimenez faces extra-time again

Our reports from the Copa America, Gold Cup and Africa Cup of Nations continue.

As usual, our Scout Notes focus on the Premier League players involved for their respective countries.

Copa America

Brazil 2-0 Argentina

Premium FPL forwards Gabriel Jesus and Roberto Firmino (both £9.5m) were on the scoresheet as Brazil edged out their fierce rivals in Wednesday morning’s semi-final.

Firmino, who has started all of Brazil’s matches at this summer’s tournament, was the provider of Selecao’s opening goal, with Jesus sweeping home the Liverpool striker’s low cross on 19 minutes.

Jesus, starting on the right as Firmino spearheaded the Brazilian attack, returned the favour in the second half as he laid the ball on a plate for the Reds’ striker to tap in.

Coach Tite said of Jesus’s display:

Gabriel impresses all the professionals that work with him because he never gives up. People tell him ‘you just have to put up with the pain and run,’ and that’s what I asked him to do.

He has to refine his solutions and he has to evolve because he’s young, but if I ask him to shoot 50 times, he’ll do 51. This capacity of persistence and his quest for something is his trademark.

Firmino, meanwhile, has been directly involved in more goals (five) than any other player at this summer’s Copa America.

Chances were few and far between for the hosts (Brazil had just four shots in total) but Philippe Coutinho ought to have done better when being fed by Jesus early in the second half.

Willian (£7.0m) came on as a half-time substitute on the left flank but picked up a thigh injury in the second half and is reportedly set to miss Sunday’s final.

The problem isn’t thought to be too serious, however.

Fernandinho (£5.5m) and Richarlison (£8.0m) recovered from injury and illness respectively to take their place on the Brazil bench but remained unused substitutes, along with Ederson (£6.0m).

Alisson (£6.0m) is now guaranteed the tournament’s Golden Glove award after keeping his fifth straight clean sheet.

A reassuring presence between the sticks, the Liverpool goalkeeper had only two saves to make but his goal led a charmed life as both Lionel Messi and Sergio Aguero (£12.0m) hit the woodwork.

The Manchester City striker made his fourth start of the tournament as the spearhead of the Argentina attack but couldn’t add to his one goal against Qatar, looping a header onto Alisson’s bar and seeing a goalbound shot blocked five minutes later.

Aguero had a shout for a penalty turned away just before Brazil scored their second goal.

Nicolas Otamendi (£5.5m) kept up his 100% appearance record in defence while Juan Foyth (£5.0m) also played the full 90 minutes.

Roberto Pereyra (£6.0m) was again an unused substitute.

Argentina now take on Chile in Saturday’s third-place play-off.

Chile 0-3 Peru

Alexis Sanchez‘s (£7.0m) Copa America hopes came to an end in the early hours of this morning, as Peru inflicted a surprising 3-0 defeat on Chile in Porto Alegre.

Sanchez, deployed on the left flank in this match, has impressed in the tournament but failed to make much of an impact in this semi-final, though did see one shot superbly saved and another blocked.

Chile were not without their chances and dominated possession, missing a penalty in the stoppage time with the game already gone.

Like Aguero and co, Alexis still has to stick around for the third-place play-off on Saturday.

The Mirror report that he will then join up with his United teammates for their tour of Asia.

Gold Cup

Mexico 1-0 Haiti (after extra-time)

Mexico have reached the final of the Gold Cup to set up a much-anticipated meeting with USA in the early hours of Monday morning (UK time).

El Tri have done it the hard way in the knockout stages, though, having to rely on a penalty shootout to see off Costa Rica in the quarter-finals and then being taken to extra-time by Haiti yesterday.

That’s now two successive 120-minute run-outs for Raul Jimenez (£7.5m) in the space of four days and it was the Wolves striker who proved to be Mexico’s match-winner in this semi-final.

Jimenez, who missed from the spot in the quarter-final shootout, converted a 93rd-minute penalty after himself being fouled.

That goal took his tally for the tournament to five.

Jimenez was heavily involved, registering eight shots in all and going close with a chipped effort in extra time.

The mid-price FPL forward would have had an assist, too, had Luis Montes not missed an open goal just before the final whistle.

Jamaica 1-3 USA

Christian Pulisic (£7.5m) again caught the eye with a brace in the USA’s 3-1 semi-final win over Jamaica.

The Chelsea winger, who has frequently played as a number ten for his country, impressed again when drifting wide and hit the woodwork with a first-half free-kick.

Pulisic’s two goals – his second and third of the tournament – were similar in nature, with the former Borussia Dortmund prospect following up saved efforts from his teammates.

Africa Cup of Nations

Kenya 0-3 Senegal

Senegal secured a last-16 meeting with Uganda after a comfortable 3-0 win over Kenya.

Having failed to score in the opening two group games, Sadio Mane (£11.5m) got off the mark with a second-half brace.

The Liverpool winger was in the thick of the action, picking up a yellow card and missing a first-half penalty.

Mane redeemed himself by latching onto a hoofed ball and finishing low past Patrick Matasi before converting his second spot-kick of the match on 78 minutes.

The former Southampton winger lasted the full duration of the game.

Victor Wanyama (£5.0m) was on the losing side as his country bowed out of the tournament.

The recalled Idrissa Gueye (£5.0m) played the first 80 minutes in central midfield, with Crystal Palace’s Cheikhou Kouyate (£5.0m) again deployed in defence.

Namibia 1-4 Ivory Coast

Wilfried Zaha (£7.0m) made his first start of the 2019 Africa Cup of Nations and marked it with a goal in his country’s 4-1 win over Namibia.

The Crystal Palace winger had two penalty shouts turned away and scuffed a shot straight at Namibia goalkeeper Lloyd Kazapua but finally got off the mark on 84 minutes, skimming a low effort past Kazapua at his near post.

Serge Aurier (£5.0m) missed out with the hamstring injury he picked up against Morocco, while Jonathan Kodjia (£5.5m) played the last five minutes as a substitute.

Ivory Coast play Mali on Monday in the round of 16.

Tanzania 0-3 Algeria

Riyad Mahrez (£8.5m) was only introduced as a 76th-minute substitute as Algeria kept up their 100% record at this year’s Africa Cup of Nations.

Algeria had already qualified for the last 16 and their coach, Djamel Belmadi, made nine changes to the starting XI from the team that defeated Senegal last week.

Leicester City’s forgotten man, Islam Slimani, scored one of his country’s goals.

Algeria face Guinea in the round of 16 on Sunday.

Guinea-Bissau 0-2 Ghana

Christian Atsu (£5.5m) missed Ghana’s final group game with a hamstring injury and has since been ruled out of the rest of the tournament.

The Newcastle United winger will return to his club for further assessment.

Angola 0-1 Mali

With Mali having already qualified for the last 16, Southampton’s Moussa Djenepo (£5.5m) was one of eight players rotated to the bench for his country’s 1-0 win over Angola.

Djenepo remained an unused substitute throughout.

South Africa 0-1 Morocco

Romain Saiss (£4.5m) played the full 90 minutes as Morocco secured their third straight 1-0 win.

A last-minute goal from Moubarak Boussoufa sealed all three points.

Morocco had already qualified for the last 16, where they will face Benin on Friday.

Cameroon 0-0 Benin

Brighton’s Gaetan Bong (£4.5m) was an unused substitute as his side secured second place in Group F and a round-of-16 tie against Nigeria.

Appreciate some thoughts on this. Team look ok?, option A or B? if I stick to the 3 premiums. Edging A as means not relying on same 4.5 defender every week.

    Heaton, 4.0
    TAA, Coleman, Dunk, x, Gibson
    Salah, Sterling, Zaha, Grealish, Dendoncker
    Kane, King, x

    A) Laporte and Wickham 442
    B) Cathcart and Jota 343

Looks okay for having those three big hitters. I prefer Laporte over Jota but think you neee a better bench with that team. So maybe B edges it.

    Thanks for the clarity Super Frank;

Lampard insists he is expecting no favours from the Chelsea board following his appointment and promised to develop players of all ages at the club.

“The last thing I want to do is ask for any favours. It’s not the way I work. You can judge success on different levels.

“All I can do is not get too far ahead of myself and work hard with what I have. Trying to develop young players is really important and will be one of my first jobs, but at the same time I want to work with the experienced players.

“I want players, whether you’re 18 or 32, who feel like Chelsea’s their club. You’re not just passing through on the way to something else.”

Time for Abramovich and the Execs to decide what they want from Chelsea. To persist with the old players (Pedro, Willian, Giroud, Luiz, Drinkwater, Bakayoko etc.) or try to develop a new young squad for the future.

Personally think they need to dump a lot of those players now and look to develop the youngsters.

I'm hoping Lampard goes with youth, I think he will as he's got the transfer ban to fall back on as an excuse if they don't immediately do well.

From an FPL point, Hudson-Odoi, Abraham, RLC could all be bargains if played every week.

Bakayoko is 24, not saying they should include him in the squad for the future but he's hardly part of the old guard

          That's just plain greedy.
Picking a cricket world cup winner is tricky by the way, Australia, India and England all evenly matched. Can't see NZ doing it myself.

James as a bit of an outside punt, we can't be worse than last season hopefully!
Leicester assets tempting but might wait for a couple of games to bring one in.

    Ederson
    Robertson / TAA / VVD / Digne
    Sterling / KDB / Siggy / Brooks / James
    King

    First Salah draft:

    Lloris
    VvD - PvA - Aarons - Kelly
    Salah - Bilva - Maddison/Zaha - Brooks
    Aguero - Kane

    4.0, 4.0, 4.5, 4.5

Don’t love Kelly starting, but short of dropping Kane (who usually struggles beginning of the season), don’t see another place to find 0.5 more.

    1. HamezMace
      • 9 Years

Need preseason to see if Kelly is even an option, personally I'd drop Brooks down.

I've looked at it, also desperate to find a way to get Salah, Sterling and Kane (also want Digne, and Zaha) but the 4.5s are dross this year, it's basically Diop/Fredericks, Charlie Taylor, and maybe Adam Smith if nailed at Bournemouth.

I feel for you - but Snoddy definitely not a regular starter. 32 (I think) and he had reduced gametime once Lanzini/Antonio were both fit. Add Yarmo and Fornals in and it doesn't look good.

Take 3. Decided to go for strength in depth. Rotation pairings. Potential OOP’s with future transfers in mind.

    Here goes.......

    Lloris

TAA // Digne // Dawson (Watford)

    Salah // Bilva // Siggy // A. Perez (Leicester)

    Vardy // King // Deulofeu

    Leno // Djenepo // Christensen // Kelly

Please rate, comment and destroy where necessary. I am however very happy with this!

People will recommend you to ditch the Lloris/Leno rotation but it could work early on and then you can wildcard them out soon enough. The only issue is that when you spread the funds evenly around the squad it becomes more difficult to react to big-hitters finding form. Because you have to take 1 or 2 million from 2 or 3 players in order to afford them.

      My thoughts :

Perez minutes at Leicester unknown? Much depends on pre-season.
Dawson one to keep an eye on but prefer Ake at 5.0 with opening fixtures.
Bilva as only City attack? Nah for me one of Sterling/Aguero is a must.
      Christensen? No thanks.
Djenepo...could be decent but a punt too far at start for me.
Leno / Lloris too much on GK's in my opinion.

    Ryan
    Robertson - Digne - Smith
    Salah - KdB - Siggy - Zaha - Perez
    Kane - Jota

    Button - Fredericks - Kelly - 4.5

Don’t normally pick a 352 but just seeing what people think about this? Could do a 5.0 defender but sacrifice the backup on the bench until WC.

I'm unsure on jimemez and jota. Think Jimenez could still be the better bet as hes an ace on bonus, takes some penalties and is still in red hot form at Gold cup! Will see how Europa qualifying and preseason line ups a shaking up before making decision. Trippier isn't a terrible shout. Spurs dont have the best start to the season but if aurier is badly injured he should be nailed and obviously has good attacking threat!

For me Jim Jota comes down to minutes (and price) - much harder to judge with EL. If he’s up front I prefer Jota just - having had them both at the end of last season and a mill goes quite a long was in week 1. Still fear the 60 min subs

Yes jota did come off early a lot and this could only worsen with the Europa league involvement. Jimenez seems to play a lot longer... I feel like they are both well priced considering how well they ended the season....

Other consideration is Jota switches to Deu King Barnes etc but there isn’t such a neat range at 7.5. And well a million goes an awful long way at the back.

It comes down to whether you want to double on city defence for me. Can only fit in one of KDB or sterling unless I go for Bernardo... currently I have Walker and sterling but have a draft with ederson as well...

This sounds similar to me. Of the 3 main City defensive options (Ederson, Walker, Laporte), Walker is the one I want least but my team has a better balance with him I think.

Agreed. Walker isn't the most exciting option but at 0.5 less than laporte he could prove good value. I had ederson at the start of last season and he really does have a ceiling of 6 points! I may go for both in the end or maybe pre season will dictate the best option to go for.

    3. DantheManinaPan

There are better value keeping options than Ederson.

There are better value defensive options than Laporte (and the others).

There are better value midfield options than Bilva.

That leaves you with KDB, Sterling and Aguero as options, and only one of those will fit, or two if you're going Salah-less.

It does feel odd, but I don't think getting three City players is wise

Which do you prefer? Whichever I look at I'm not convinced.

    1. Ederson, VVD, Diop, Wilson (would have to play either Diop or Dendoncker).

    2. Ryan, Robertson, Laporte, Diop, King (Could go 4 or 5 at the back depending on Diop's fixture)

    3. Ryan, VVD, Walker, Kelly, Wilson (would be 442 every week)

    Rest of squad
Button, TAA, Coleman, Salah, Sterling, Sigurdsson, Zaha, Dendoncker, DCL, Wickham

What do people think of this draft? Penalty takers from the top 4. Couldn't decide on the best 2 7m options so decided on the 2 Bournemouth mids for weeks 1 and 2, at which point I will have a better idea of whether Sanchez, Willian, Perez etc are worth it.

    Ryan/Button
    Robertson, Laporte, Trippier, A Smith/Diop
    Salah, Fraser, Brooks, Jorginho/Dendoncker
    Kane, Aguero/4.5

I always feel that putting a lot of funds in a few players allows for the best flexibility as you can downgrade one of your premiums and downgrade anybody else in your team to anybody else in the game.

    Heaton / Button

    Coleman / Taylor / O'Connell / Dunk / El Mohamady

Sigurdsson / De Bruyne / Salah / Dilva / Zaha

    Kane / King / Calvert-Lewin

Big fan of my midfield and Kane. Surely DCL is a shout with current Everton Squad. El Mohamady under threat as well now but hoping for Jenkinson to go to palace to be my other 4.5 mil.

Aye. I'd love to get him in but unsure where I'd make the saving. I like KDB at the price. Could save some from Dilva but then I need to find 4.5 from somewhere.

I stopped looking past the front 8.

Looks like Gunn is now first choice at Saints for anybody wondering. Listening to offers for McCarthy and Forster.

The Liverpool defence is a conundrum although I like how FPL have priced it.

    Robertson - nailed and attacking.
TAA - on set pieces and looks to have highest ceiling but maybe more of a rotation risk with Gomez able to play right back.
VVD - Slightly cheaper and 100% nailed but not as great an attacking threat.

Ideally I'd have TAA and Robertson but currently on TAA and VVD.

For the extra 0.5 over van dijk I find it hard not to go for both robbo and TAA. Yeah van dijk got some attacking returns but 3 of those assists were dubious at best and robbo and trent are just so advanced. I think they all will prove excellent value again.

I agree, it's just finding the 0.5 which I'm struggling with.
