Salah’s FPL appeal boosted by early AFCON exit for Egypt

Mohamed Salah (£12.5m) made a much earlier-than-anticipated exit from the Africa Cup of Nations on Saturday evening after Egypt were defeated 1-0 by South Africa.

The shock result means that Salah and his country have bowed out of the tournament over two weeks before it is due to finish.

Bafana Bafana’s victory could have repercussions in Fantasy Premier League, with Salah’s summer international obligations coming to an end before those of teammates Sadio Mane (£11.5m) and Roberto Firmino (£9.5m).

With the Africa Cup of Nations final taking place exactly three weeks before Gameweek 1 kicks off, we had previously expressed concern that Salah and/or Mane could be doubts for the 2019/20 curtain-raiser between Liverpool and Norwich City in August.

Last year, Dejan Lovren (£5.5m) and Jordan Henderson (£5.5m) were handed three weeks off after their exertions with Croatia and England at the World Cup.

Klopp is, indeed, expected to give Firmino and Alisson (£6.0m) the same amount of time to recover after their run to the final in the Copa America.

Salah’s premature departure from the Africa Cup of Nations, however, has effectively killed any concern that he won’t be ready for Gameweek 1 – barring any further injuries, of course.

Egypt 0-1 South Africa

Saturday’s result was an unanticipated outcome: Egypt were not only the host nation of the competition but also the pre-tournament favourites with the bookmakers and made it to the final in 2017.

Egypt went into the weekend with a 100% record in this year’s tournament, while South Africa had lost two of their three group matches and only qualified for the knockout stages as one of the best third-place teams.

Salah had been a doubt for this last-16 tie with a cold but recovered to line up, as he so often does, on the right flank.

The Liverpool winger looked below-par and didn’t have much influence on proceedings, however, with South Africa full-back Sifiso Hlanti proving more than a match for the premium FPL midfielder.

Salah started brightly and fizzed an early effort wide via a deflection but struggled to make an impression beyond that, save for one superb pass through to Mahmoud Trezeguet that the Egypt attacker should have converted.

Trezeguet had missed another chance that Salah had teed up earlier in the game, while the Liverpool man himself had two other blocked shots and drilled wide from a long-range free-kick.

Ahmed El Mohamady (£4.5m) and Mohamed Elneny (£4.5m) both started the game for Egypt, with the Aston Villa right-back completing the game and Elneny substituted with seven minutes to go.

Both of those two players will also now return to their respective Premier League clubs.

For what it’s worth, Percy Tau had an excellent match – the Brighton and Hove Albion attacker has not been able to get a work permit since his move to the Amex but a strong showing from South Africa this summer could change all that.

Uganda 0-1 Senegal

While Salah’s Africa Cup of Nations has come to an end, Mane and Senegal have progressed to the tournament quarter-finals after edging past Uganda on Friday.

It will be interesting to see just how far Mane goes with the Lions of Teranga, given the concerns we outlined above about Liverpool assets being handed three-week breaks following their international efforts this summer.

Senegal next face Benin on Wednesday, with their opponents being one of the lowest-ranked teams left in the competition.

Mane’s nation, meanwhile, are now as short as 8/5 with some bookmakers to win the tournament following Egypt’s exit.

The former Southampton winger was again in the thick of the action, scoring his side’s winner after 15 minutes before missing from the spot for the second time in this tournament.

Mane broke the deadlock when racing through to finish M’Baye Niang’s pass but, having missed from 12 yards against Kenya last week, then saw a second-half spot-kick saved after he himself was felled by opposition goalkeeper Denis Onyango.

Mane and Senegal can occasionally look dangerous going forward but this was a match low on goalscoring opportunities, with Senegal having just five shots in total.

The premium FPL midfielder was again deployed on the left wing and lasted the whole 90 minutes.

Budget midfield pair Cheikhou Kouyate and Idrissa Gana Gueye (both £5.0m) also played the full game.

Morocco 1-1 Benin (1-4 Penalties)
Nigeria 3-2 Cameroon

Wolves’ Romain Saiss (£4.5m) played the full 120 minutes as Morocco bowed out of the Africa Cup of Nations after a penalty shootout defeat on Friday.

Saiss impressed in defence as Morocco bossed the possession and chances but his country were unable to break down a stubborn Benin side who triumphed on penalties after playing the last 25 minutes of extra-time with only ten men.

Alex Iwobi (£6.0m) was on the scoresheet in the other round-of-16 tie to take place on Sunday as Nigeria edged past defending champions Cameroon in a five-goal thriller.

The lively Arsenal winger scored the game’s winner on 66 minutes, charging through to finish low past Andre Onana after being slipped through by Odion Ighalo.

Wilfred Ndidi (£5.0m) played the whole 90 minutes in midfield while Brighton’s Leon Balogun (£4.5m) replaced Iwobi in stoppage time.

We’ll bring you up to speed on the other Africa Cup of Nations games and the finals of the Copa America and Gold Cup in the coming days, as well as revealing the latest on Alexis Sanchez‘s (£7.0m) injury after the Manchester United winger was substituted in his country’s 2-1 defeat to Argentina on Saturday.

Got a bit of stick for including Smith in my sterling, Salah and kane draft. Here's another go

    Heaton
    TAA VVD Digne Zinchenko
    Salah Sterling Perez Jorginho
    Kane King

    Subs Button Kelly Dendoncker Greenwood

Obviously need to keep an eye on city left back situation, other than that it feels ok?

Pretty decent team. I'm not going to say "watch out for Heaton" because anyone worth their salt is going to obviously monitor the three at Burnley before sticking with a first choice.

Wouldn't like to be playing Jorginho in my team, but suspect some compromise had to appear somewhere if you have 3 premium players.
Alternative would be to go 5-3-2 but not personally keen on that.

Looks ok yea. Although I'm not keen on starting Jorginho. Just don't rate him.

Why don't you start with some other 5.5 def then, like Coleman which is 100% first team. Monitor city left back, then make the switch later on. Personally, i'm staying away from that LB position at City as i feel they will get rotated.

It's different, but that isn't a bad thing. If ever there was a right way to go about 523, this is it. You will probably be wildcarding fairly soon I presume though? As soon as a couple of mids go bang you're going to be pretty limited moving quickly.

    Bottomed: Thoughts on a slightly revamped team (where my usual ball busters at);

    Lloris, Button
    TAA, VVD, Walker, Boly, Diop
    Salah, KDB, Brooks, Perez, Dendoncker
    Kane, King, Greenwod

Diop/Boly rotated each week to never face a top 6 side from last season.
Lloris set and forget - plenty of discussion how he can score just as much as Ederson (although can do Walker > Zinc and then Lloris to Ederson = Triple pool and triple City)

I think all round this is a pretty strong team?

Not sure about a Europa League defender but think we have already disagreed on that

What leapt out to me is who would you have the confidence to captain other than Kane and Salah (or is that enough options for you)

      1. Zenith UK
        • 7 Years

It's a rotating pair so they'd on be facing "lesser" teams.

Kane, Salah, KDB, TAA, VVD for captain choices

I wouldn’t captain a defender unless no other choices and three of those suggestions are one team. KDB perhaps risky too - for some reason I see him as steady but not explosive, which personally I look for in a captain. May be wrong on that.

He was playing out of position to be fair. His role on the right was primarily to create, and he likes to cut inside onto his right foot. Also, Sarriball didn't really have enough time to take off.

I don't think he's being overlooked as such. I think everyone, including myself are just weary of Chelsea on a whole. Their squad lacks quality in midfield and up top. Willian is going to be their brightest attacking flair which in itself says it all. Having said all of that, if Pulisic gets going and like you say, Willian takes responsibility they could have a decent-ish start. Chelsea's fixtures aren't that bad either and although they're not going to be top 3 this season, there will still be goals.

    Help appreciated

    Heaton

    Robertson, TAA, Coleman, Holebas, Kelly

    Salah Sterling Siggy 4.5 4.5

    Vardy Wilson 4.5

I’ll be looking in preseason for a cheap fourth mid so I can alternate between Kelly and Holebas rather than playing both. At the moment any mid under 7 seems too high risk.

I think you should never consider players like Holebas. He's very old and also rash and reckless. I think Masina will play more regularly. Settle for younger upcoming talents like say Max Aarons (rumoured to make a move to Palace). If you're gonna spend 5.5 on a defender, you'd be better off picking a Chelsea, Spurs or Arsenal defender than an Everton one. Also, I think van Dijk is a great option at 6.5 and potentially overlooked by many managers who are overly impressed with Alexander-Arnold and Robertson. I think he can score much more goals this season.

Cheers. Hadn’t realised Holebas place at risk, will look into it.

Surely Coleman is a decent pick? Or would you prefer downgrading robbo to vvd and upgrading Coleman to digne?

Can’t touch arsenal. I am sure there is a logic in emery’s line ups but I’ve never understood it.

        1. FPL Mountaineer
          • 6 Years

Coleman isn't a bad pick but I'm saying there are certainly other players at bigger clubs capable of getting bigger hauls because of more clean sheets and similar attacking returns.

Arsenal defenders aren't good picks. You're right about that. I'm just giving them the benefit of the doubt in case they actually make some savvy investments in defence but looks unlikely.

Emerson is a good shout for Chelsea if they do well this season. It's more of a wait and see. For now, I've got Vertonghen but I'm keeping an eye out on Davinson Sanchez. He's good at headers. I plan on switching between a Spurs and Man City defender throughout the season as I already have 2 Liverpool defenders anyways.

Slightly disagree your earlier point about that 5.5 def spots. All teams you mentioned doesn't have a solid 5.5 def to pick from that won't get rotated as history showed.

Coleman is a standout choice at 5.5, and with those fixtures I'd argue choosing the 5.5 from those 3 teams is the bad move.

            1. FPL Mountaineer
              • 6 Years

Agree with what you are saying. However, I think Spurs should do better defensively than they did last season. The arrival of Ndombele should help them greatly in that aspect. Also, we have enough time in pre-season to figure out who will be the preferred options. We might also see Alderweireld and Trippier/Aurier being sold before the season starts so that might nail down a few spots for a Spurs defender. Also, we can't be too sure that Everton will keep up the defensive performances they had last season. So, if you want an Everton defender, it's safer to spend 0.5 more on Digne with almost guaranteed attacking returns than Coleman who may/may not get the attacking returns. That's the way I see it though.

Upgrading from Coleman to Digne could be a much better option because of his involvement in set pieces.

DCL could be fantastic value. If he's nailed I've got no doubt he's in my team until the first WC.

You're right, but surely Everton would be mad not to sign a striker.

Not really, apart from some noise about Diego Costa but I wouldn't think there is much in that. I just think they would be crazy not to try to sign someone. They would have a really good team if they just improved up front.

I've actually got him in my draft due to absence of other options, but looking to ship him out. Problem with DCL is he doesn't know where the goal is, hence his price.

Maddison has easiest fixtures and as long as he performs ok you won't need to swap out for ages.

Zaha and Perez haven't got the best first 8 weeks, zaha probably slightly easier but the more expensive. I'm edging towards Perez as I think the zaha transfer saga will go on for a while

Just seen Keith's post on cheap keepers and its a convincing one. The difficulty I had last year was picking the wrong one and then rivals with a 5.5 Ederson kept having the upper hand.

However, a Heaton and O'Connell combination should be formidable pairing with Laporte as MCI cover.

4-4-2 draft is my favorite now. First I had 5-4-1 but two non playing forwards made my head hurt.

    Button | Ederson
    TAA | Robertson | Digne | Chilwell | Targett
    Salah | KDB | Sigurdsson | Maddison | Dendoncker
    Wilson | Calvert-Lewin | 4.5

Richarlison played striker in the first half of the season. Last months Calvert-Lewin was their first striker, only a new striker would mean Calvert-Lewin loses his place.

I'm slowly becoming more convinced about Ayoze Perez as a good option, and not as 'punty' as it might suggest. Especially with the additional reinforcements Leicester have added, I can see him having a good preseason and in a lot more template teams we see here by August.

Yes, they're lining up some real firepower behind Vardy. Wait for Tielemans to sign up too.

Spot on. My only concern is whether Perez, Maddison and Tielemans can all thrive in their favoured positions in the same system, but it looks like a very exciting line up.

I hope so. For now, Perez slots in perfectly into my team as well, so I'll be keeping a close eye on their preseason games (Cheltenham, Cambridge, Rotherham, Stoke and Atalanta).

Laporte over Walker - partly the 27 point difference, partly that Laporte pops up with the odd goal.
Zinky - definitely if he nails a place as he has assists in his locker. Problem is rotation.
